Off My Mind: Possible Directions for the Next 'Star Wars' Trilogy

There's a new 'Star Wars' trilogy finally coming our way. Will the comics have any influence on the direction?

With the recent announcement that Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the biggest news was the coming of another trilogy of Star Wars movies. This was obviously met with mixed results as many are overjoyed with the idea of actually getting more movies and others immediately assume the movies will lead to the destruction of the franchise. The only reassurance to those concerned fans is Disney would not pay over four billion just to run the franchise into the grave.

George Lucas has discussed the idea of stepping away from running the franchise.

It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.

Lucas will continue to serve as a creative consultant.

No Caption Provided

As Lucas pointed out, it's a vast universe. There are and have been a multitude of stories outside the six live-action films. With a third trilogy already being planned, the big question is, what will be the story and focus on the next trilogy?

== TEASER ==

The Rebel Alliance may have defeated Emperor Palpatine's vicious rule over the galaxy (with the help of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and others) but that doesn't mean the story is over. As seen in the numerous expanded universe novels, defeating the Empire was just the beginning. The entire galaxy had been under the Emperor's rule for over twenty years. Despite the harsh ways the galaxy was run, there would be numerous worlds loyal to that rule and resistant to change.

No Caption Provided

The expanded universe novels have encompassed the forty years after the Battle of Yavin. This would be the perfect groundwork for the next set of trilogies. They could focus on the attempts to establish the government while pockets of those still loyal to the Empire exist. Luke Skywalker focuses on reestablishing the Jedi Temple and New Jedi Order. Luke eventually marries and even has a child. Han and Leia also married and had three children of their own.

Yuuzhan Vong
Yuuzhan Vong

It's not just a time of wedded bliss and domestic life. Aside from the political struggles, the heroes and entire galaxy eventually find themselves under attack by the Yuuzhan Vong (twenty-five years after Episode IV: A New Hope). The Yuuzhan Vong are an alien species from outside the Star Wars galaxy. Their religion sees all forms of technology as blasphemy and they have genetically engineered all their organic technology and ships. To add to the threat, the Yuuzhan Vong cannot be felt through the Force, which goes against the idea of all living beings having a connection to the Force.

The war lasts about five years. Entire worlds are destroyed and we saw the deaths of several major Star Wars characters. Stories after the war deal with the rise of the Sith, which also resulted in some personal losses for many.

There are many stories that have been told. The thing is the expanded universe has always remained outside of the cinematic universe under Lucas' rule. Whether or not the decision would be made to adapt these existing stories remains to be seen. Logic dictates that having movies where the outcome is already known would likely not occur. There's also the question of whether or not the original actors would be willing and able to reprise their previous roles. They may have aged since Return of the Jedi but these stories do take place about the same amount of time after. If the decision was made to move slightly after the timeline in the novels and still use some of the original actors, it could be argued that perhaps they age differently than we do in our galaxy.

Cade Skywalker
Cade Skywalker
Cade and Luke
Cade and Luke

Dark Horse Comics has also given us a successful run taking place approximately one hundred thirty years after the movies. STAR WARS: LEGACY ran for fifty issues with a focus on a descendant of Luke Skywalker, Cade Skywalker.

Cade was once a Jedi padawan but later became a smuggler and bounty hunter. He left his training after witnessing the death of his father at the hands of two Sith lords. He wanted revenge. Cade later was pulled into galactic affairs and eventually showed he possessed an enormous amount of power in the Force.

Going this route would be an easy option in creating new characters and casting the roles. If the idea is to make "Star Wars for a new generation," having new characters in a familiar universe could be a way to avoid the typical hatred from some long time fans. The only problem is, could characters from LEGACY or other new ones be worthy of the Star Wars movie treatment? If the movies don't feature any of the characters from the previous six movies, would old fans still care?

No Caption Provided

As much as I like the idea of going forward past the expanded universe time (to retain the element of surprise in not knowing the fate of certain characters), a third trilogy not involving the familiar characters goes beyond the idea of the overall theme of the six films. The original trilogy made it seem as if it was all about Luke Skywalker. After watching both trilogies, it's clear that they are all about Darth Vader. It's about his rise, fall and redemption. A third trilogy won't be able to have that connection. This shouldn't be a huge issue and a determinant against more Star Wars movies. It'll just be weird to have a third trilogy separate from the first two.

This is where we begin the speculation. It is a vast universe and we could always see characters and elements that had nothing to do with the battle between the Rebels and Empire. It is once again an exciting time for Star Wars fans. We thought we'd never see another live-action movie. We have to assume that Disney will want their four billion dollar investment to pay off. We'll just have to wait and see if they go with familiar characters or move beyond the timeline seen in the movies.

I think the Knights of the Republic were better written than any Star Wars movie in the last quarter century. Why not base something on that? Kreia, anyone?

It will supposedly be an original script, but they're making it sound like they plan on doing this like James Bond so it'll be interesting what the movies look like after episodes 7-9.

I honestly would want them to forget the comics/games/cartoons and go their own way as they never existed. I enjoyed the comics but yeah I want them to go in a different direction. Also please please retcon the midi-chlorians. Forget the sci-fi and go back to the mystical fantasy.

Having movies set during Exar Kuns rise or the Mandalorian Wars would be cool, or during the the five years between KOTOR and KOTOR 2. Or even better, in the 300 years prior to TOR. As long as it's in a period of time where Sith are as plentiful as Jedi, they should focus on that.

The new movies are going to be all an original story. Heard the writers will not make an adaptation from any expanded universe work.

I think they'll loosely base their movies off some of the comics/books bur for the most part, Disney will make the films go their own way.

It doesn't necessarily mean 7-6 should be KOTOR. They can make a separate movie set in the Old Republic while they make the new trilogy. Doesn't necessarily need to be live-action either; it can be computer animated like in the TOR game cinematics.

I really hope that they move away from the Skywalker story. Don't get me wrong a mention of what happened in the past movies fine, but there is just so much universe to explore. We don't need to be stuck figuring out how to use the comics and novels have done. They said the script is original so here is hoping for something good. I have hope fresh eyes will help quiet some of the haters of recent.

I agree with you, much of the universe can be explored and should, with a whole new cast of charracters, personalities and such.

But I don't mind if another descendant of the Skywalker family is used. I think Cade Skywalker would fit in nicely seeing as the next trilogy will take place after Return of the Jedi. Plus it would keep to the unofficial tradition of having a Skywalker as the main character:

prequel- anakin

original- Luke

Current Cade?

Could be interesting.

But i definitely do agree that the movies should use a storyline fresh and something that comics ansd books havent already covered.

The one thing I want is a WHOLE new direction. The prequels main focus went over Anakin's transition to the dark side while sub plots went over the galaxy's downfall. The Original trilogy went over Luke being the chosen one and having to face destiny and sub plots having the galaxy rebel against the darkness to make things good again.

I hope the new trilogy aren't just movies to fill in blanks of the first 6 episodes. It has to be a new direction, and i would love to see any descendent of the Skywalker family be the main character with a colorful cast around him.

The issue would be the villain(s) and the motive since the prequel was the villain trying to control the galaxy, the original trilogy the villain was overthrown, what would be the villains purpose in this new trilogy??

I think it should be a villain that is soo dark he just wants to DESTROY the galaxy all together..its the only thing that would make a new interesting motive other than bad guy trying to take over again.

It is going to be an original story. If it is called Episode VII, it will be post-ROTJ which basically means that all its EU is dead because Disney is not going to bother with respecting it (basically like TCW but ten times worst).

They should go with something similar to the Force Unleashed, Darth Vaders secret apprentice!!!! That way they COULD connect it to the previous trilogies.

Cade Skywalker, Darth Krayt, Darth Talon and the Imperial Knights were all awesome in Legacy so I think they should at some point use these characters (Ep. 10, 11, 12 maybe?).

I think they should also reference Starkiller from the Force Unleashed and make his story cannon of how he helped set up the Rebel Alliance

I was sort of conflicted when I heard the news. I'm glad the franchise will continue and that it has been taken out of Lucus control. I hate what was done to Darth Vader in the prequels. I'd love to see him up on the big screen returned to his powerful, bad ass self. Something to erase the "Nooooo!" of Episode three. But I can't think of any way to continue his story with out looking really stupid and contrived. I know it is time to move on and there are other stories to tell and characters to create. Luke and the others are still alive and that would be the logical step in bridging the Original trilogy to the upcoming productions.

But I still his Vader could get at least one last film so he could regain what was lost.

I think they need to either do distant pastor distant future. Rather than dance around various already-made expanded universe novels and games the next trilogy could introduce a new era which has never been done in Star Wars before and which new Expanded Universe media can be based around.

If they don't go this route however I think that KOTOR is the way to go.

I hope they don't you Knights of the Old Republic or anything before the original movies. Part of the problem with the Prequels was that there was no "human" character to latch onto like Han Solo or Luke in New Hope. The Audience needs someone with human emotions for the movie to work and too many Jedi just means a bunch of stuffy dudes in hobo robes.

I'm starting to get excited about this. I'd like to see an original story with references to the original films (but preferably not just phoned in for the sake of it) and perhaps a director like Brad Bird? I've admired his stuff since Iron Giant and I think MI: Ghost Protocol proved he could pull off slightly more adult live-action.

They just said that 7 would be an original story. That means they will either butcher the established continuity by placing it somewhere right after 6 or something. Hopefully it will be after Fate of the Jedi and then they can have the original cast in it and factor in time flow and not upset continuity. That would be perfect. Or the could do it after Legacy and tell another story in Cade's life.

New star wars trilogy? Count me in! More movies, more goodness. As long as they don't mess up the continuity, by either taking inspiration by books and comics or by placing it after legacy, these movies will be awesome. The old fandom has been around 30 years now and they are as dedicated as they are close minded. Time for some new stuff. The prospect of a Star Wars movie is in itself a factor for a whole new generation of fans, if they make it good enough. Even if old fans don't like it, I believe younger audiences will be thrilled, creating an opportunity for an all new Star Wars era.

I really do not understand how people can believe that the EU will not be affected.

It is dead, just like the 2002-2006 Clone Wars EU is dead because of TCW.

Disney is not going to bother with a books and comics that only a few thousand people read, especially if it means avoiding big events such as the wedding of Han and Leia (I am pretty sure their version will not feature Dathomiri witches), the birth of their children, the New Jedi Order (on Coruscant, not on Yavin IV) and probably Luke's death in Episode IX.

For me the natural route to go would be the Thrawn Trilogy to finally finish up the tale of the final defeat and unseating of the Galactic Empire. I know, it seems too obvious a conclusion but my reasoning is that so many people are under the impression that with the victory at Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi that the Empire was forever defeated once and for all, and its just not true. Fans need true closure of that and therefore I believe the Thrawn Trilogy to be a good starting point for Disney should they do this, even if I'm still not wild about Lucasfilm being sold to them :/

With the news that GL had lunch with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher a few months ago to discuss Episodes 7-9, I can only assume they will have roles in the story, but not be the stars. I would assume their children - but not the EU children. Disney has already announced the EU will not be used in the next trilogy.

I would like to see a rebirth of the Sith in some way with a leader similar to Vader, but be their own villain at the same time. I just feel there has to be some significant link to Vader or Sidious to make it feel threatening enough. There also has to be a strong political link to Republic, or it won't be a true Star Wars movie.

i hate how people right off movies without giving them a chance. so many did it with first class and ended up liking it. the reason amazing spider-man sucked was because it sucked not because they just finished a trilogy recently. i like seeing characters i like hitting the big screen and if they miss oh well i just wont buy it on blu ray. episodes iv-iii are classics, but its not like they are remaking those (which again i wouldnt hate).
