Off My Mind: Mutants And Vampires

Because the X-Men don't have enough enemies as it is.

One of the pieces of news that came out of C2E2 this past weekend was the X-Men would be fighting vampires. Yes, vampires. This isn't the first time that the mutants have fought vampires. They did have some run-ins with Dracula in the past so they might be a little prepared.

These days it feels like vampires are everywhere. We have Twilight, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, etc. You can't get away from them. Now we know why Blade will be hanging out with the X-Men for a bit.

When I first heard this, I thought it was just crazy. Do we really need or want to see the X-Men fighting vampires? I thought about it for a bit and decided it could work. Despite their recent fight with almost zombie-like characters in Necrosha, this could be a nice change of pace. How many times have the X-Men fought the Sentinels or the Hellfire Club? I'm all for seeing a fight against a different set of "villains." But I am a little skeptical, obviously.

The other thing that makes this interesting is this is happening during The Heroic Age. I will admit that when I first heard about The Heroic Age coming after Dark Reign and Siege, a small part of me was afraid we were only going to have happy, bright, cheerful stories. But we all know better. Vampires don't seem too bright and cheerful to me. Plus the fact that in one of the promos, it appears that little Jubilee has turned into a vampire. Although from the other promo similar to the group shot of the X-Men above, it appears that perhaps some X-Men other than Jubilee will be turning into Vampires as well.

What's the verdict? Is it a good idea to have the X-Men fight vampires? Writer Victor Gischler gives us some assurance.

"It's going to be a nice fresh look at vampires. I think people are going to be pretty impressed."

With some "less familiar" X-characters being brought in, perhaps we will see more mutants turn into vampires. That could be a way to turn things on its side. We'll have a new team of X-Men introduced but they won't all survive. Or they won't all remain regular mutants. It wouldn't be too big of a shock if Marvel decided to change some mutants into vampires. Even though the number of mutants has gone down since M-Day, there are still a lot of mutants sitting around doing nothing. Is this a good use of underused characters? Would you rather see a character stuck in comic book limbo or have them converted into a mutant/vampire hybrid? It's a tough call but since I'm not the biggest fan of vampires, I think I would rather have them stay at home.

What will happen if a mutant turns into a vampire? I'm pretty sure there isn't a cure for vampirism in the Marvel Universe. If one of the X-Men gets changed, are they stuck like that for good? I know anything can happen in comics and writers are always coming up with ways to "fix" things, but this might be a little trickier.

What are your thoughts on vampires in the X-Men comics? At least it's not werewolves, right? We've already had some in the pages of X-Force.
