Off My Mind: Mutants And Vampires

Because the X-Men don't have enough enemies as it is.

No Caption Provided
One of the pieces of news that came out of C2E2 this past weekend was the X-Men would be fighting vampires. Yes, vampires. This isn't the first time that the mutants have fought vampires. They did have some run-ins with Dracula in the past so they might be a little prepared.

These days it feels like vampires are everywhere. We have Twilight, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, etc. You can't get away from them. Now we know why Blade will be hanging out with the X-Men for a bit.

When I first heard this, I thought it was just crazy. Do we really need or want to see the X-Men fighting vampires? I thought about it for a bit and decided it could work. Despite their recent fight with almost zombie-like characters in Necrosha, this could be a nice change of pace. How many times have the X-Men fought the Sentinels or the Hellfire Club? I'm all for seeing a fight against a different set of "villains." But I am a little skeptical, obviously.

The other thing that makes this interesting is this is happening during The Heroic Age. I will admit that when I first heard about The Heroic Age coming after Dark Reign and Siege, a small part of me was afraid we were only going to have happy, bright, cheerful stories. But we all know better. Vampires don't seem too bright and cheerful to me. Plus the fact that in one of the promos, it appears that little Jubilee has turned into a vampire. Although from the other promo similar to the group shot of the X-Men above, it appears that perhaps some X-Men other than Jubilee will be turning into Vampires as well.

What's the verdict? Is it a good idea to have the X-Men fight vampires? Writer Victor Gischler gives us some assurance.

"It's going to be a nice fresh look at vampires. I think people are going to be pretty impressed."

With some "less familiar" X-characters being brought in, perhaps we will see more mutants turn into vampires. That could be a way to turn things on its side. We'll have a new team of X-Men introduced but they won't all survive. Or they won't all remain regular mutants. It wouldn't be too big of a shock if Marvel decided to change some mutants into vampires. Even though the number of mutants has gone down since M-Day, there are still a lot of mutants sitting around doing nothing. Is this a good use of underused characters? Would you rather see a character stuck in comic book limbo or have them converted into a mutant/vampire hybrid? It's a tough call but since I'm not the biggest fan of vampires, I think I would rather have them stay at home.

What will happen if a mutant turns into a vampire? I'm pretty sure there isn't a cure for vampirism in the Marvel Universe. If one of the X-Men gets changed, are they stuck like that for good? I know anything can happen in comics and writers are always coming up with ways to "fix" things, but this might be a little trickier.

What are your thoughts on vampires in the X-Men comics? At least it's not werewolves, right? We've already had some in the pages of X-Force.

Meh, vampires.
The only vampires I'm interested in are the ones in Buffy. I won't be getting this.

"  Writer Victor Gischler gives us some assurance. "
WHO?

The whole Marvel U. is going the way of FrankenCastle.

Quick question about the number of mutants left.  I know there's the whole ( less than ) 198, but how many "ex" mutants are still kicking around?  I really didn't pay attention to that whole era.  I just know Rictor's in X-Factor.

Even the X-Men aren't immune to the TWITlight fanaticism. It's amazing how after something becomes popular everyone has to abuse it. Didn't Marvel just finish Necrosha?

It's not too surprising that the X-Men story wouldn't be too closely connected to Heroic Age. They were hardly involved in Dark Reign.

I would be more impressed if they could make vampires fresh. Especially in the already over saturated market. That in itself would be quite the accomplishment. At worst. Let's just hope this will be over fast.

So this is how they're going to incorporate blade. I already told you he's a "mutant" vampire... they'll probably have Psylock, Storm, or Rogue get bitten. Hey doesn't Blade have a vampire cure?

Im not a big fan of vampires either and im pretty sure this will be after second coming, so there will either be less mutants to fight these vampires or more. Im going for less. WHAT?! yes, i said it, i dont think hope is the massiah. Why else would the writers bring in a cast from other places (she-hulk, spiderman, elektra, etc.)? Vampires could be interesting depending on how its written. I hope the vampires make an appearance at the end of second coming.... arent there also few vampires nowadays? Blades been killing them all off.

The Heroic Age needs to do the same with the X books as it has with the other Marvel titles, I dropped Uncanny nearly a year a go because of the poor story lines filled with characters I simply didn't care about.

I'm so tired of Vampires. Is this to get the Twilight crowd to come to Marvel side or something.
Are we going to see "ZOMG! Wolfie is hot as a vampire! Does he sparkle?" Please God no!

as long as vampires don't turn out to be one of chuck austen's mutant groups (like the ngels and the demons back in the early 200s) i'll be happy with this.

Vampires were one of my favorite monsters growing up, in recent years the watering/dumbing down of the vampire genre (at least in the mainstream) has caused me to move down to the zombie camp. As for Vampires and X-Men.. well combine that with the awful art they've been pimping this silly project with and it's a recipe for shitmonkeys.
Seriously, makes me wanna yell "WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS", but I already know the answer. i just wanna know what they smoked and snorted when they thought all this was a remotely good idea. This could possibly turn into the lowest point in X-Men comics, ever.

This could go either way. Worst case scenario is that they find some way to make the characters that get turned into vamps back into normal mutants. They already showed a type of "cure" once in the recent Blade comics were he's fighting Spidey in who has been bitten by Dracula and turned . After he beats Spidey and stakes Drac ; S.H.I.E.L.D.  shows up to take away Drac's corpse and when an agent asks Blade what to do about Spidey he tells him not to worry since Spidey's radioactive blood/biology will treat the vampirism as a disease given time will burn it out of his system making him normal again. When we next see Spidey in the comic a few issues later he's back to normal. So basically if this really doesn't work well the writer's will just write in some scientist type character if not Beast making some kinda cure that will inadvertantly not only turn the victim back to normal but also restore their powers if they've been depowered.

It looks alright. Way to far off for me to see whether it works or not.
Like anything its going to boil down to the presentation, as whether
or not its written well. The story makes some sense. The vampires and
mutants are both diminished species and the vampires decide to take it
to them, especially in light of the events of MI:13, which i felt left me hanging and
needed more resolve. To the best of my understanding this will be in the new series
itself and might not really be an X-Over, so it might be optional anyways.

I wonder if they'll come out with another blacked out teaser listing the X-Men that'll get bitten.

I think Gambit would make a cool vamp
Marrow and Stacy X would be nice too (are they still alive?)

Next up:  Mutants vs Zombies!

Awwwww yeah!

It could even be X-Men vs Marvel Zombies!

I wanna see Blade try and turn them all into Vampires! ... ZAMPIRES!
I wanna see Blade try and turn them all into Vampires! ... ZAMPIRES!
Of course it would later spread to the Avengers, Thunderbolts, and to the whole Marvel Universe in a major crossover event!   Heck, even have some mutants or heroes turned Vampire in the current storyline fight alongside or against the Zombies!

Holy Jigglypuff!  That's brilliant!  I think I'm turning into the new and sexier Geoff Johns with a dash of Dan Slott!

Oh please hire me Marvel

I'll admit that I do like to open the two versions of the group shot & switch between images to look at the changes.  I'm kinda dorky like that.

But I'm seriously sick of Vampires.  I  have been for years.  They invaded manga a couple of years ago.  They invaded LiveJournal.  They invaded my cross-over (although the variant covers for Necrosha were brilliant)...

I just don't DON'T want vampires in my comics!

I'd rather see Jubilee depowered & dead than turned into the undead.  It's a terrible cliché to give the powerless girl vampire powers instead.  Either leave her unpowered, or just kill her... Don't waste our time with something that'll only be retconned in a year or two :(

This a is a really stupid idea, and I can give you one specific reason, though there are many: Sunspot absorbs solar energy, and also outputs it. He should be able to absolutely destroy any vampire forces the X-Men ever encounter. Pretty sure Dazzler could also proved some help with that, though it wouldn't be strictly necessary.

Let's cash in on the latest flavour of the month.
Please god let this be a one off story with no lasting effects. So no mutants becoming Vampires. I'd rather have Storm than Mutant-X's Blood Storm.

Couple of points.
You say there's no cure for Vampirism in the MU? I'm pretty sure the writers could come up with one if they wanted.
And the "Twilight" cover? Chances are it's just another annoying variant.

Please this just be a cash in on the vampire trend.
I'd much rather have Storm than Mutant-X's Blood Storm.

I was just thinking that Elixir could probably pull it off. I mean, between the telepaths, and the big brains that exist in Marvel, it should be easy to allow someone like Reed Richards or Hank Pym to work with Eilxir on a cure, and Elixir already has all of Beast's knowledge of biology.

@Korg:
You brought up some good points earlier about characters who could fight vampirism and now some who could cure it.
Bottom line vampires are flavour of the month and there's no risk of a charactert staying vampire.
This whole idea stinks like ass.
It's a flash in the pan at best.
Nothin' to see here folks. move a long.

I said it before and here it is again. Give us X-men in mutant related stories and I'm in.
Bring mutant politics back and do away with this 128 or how ever many mutants are left nonsense. Give us hated and feared muties again. I remember X-treme X-men (stoopid title by the way) with mutants flaunting their powers and bullying humans. None of that. Loses the whole fable quality or the oppressed minority.

Vampires are a part of the Marvel Universe, might as well spread the wealth... as long as it's natural.
