Is it possible for heroes to find happiness?

Heroes fighting crime have to make lots of sacrifices. Does their love life have to be one of them? While heroes often are involved in relationships, it seems that often they turn sour or even deadly.

Yesterday it was announced that a monthly Hawkeye & Mockingbird series would be out in June written by Jim McCann with art by David Lopez. These two seem like a perfect couple but they've had their share of hardship. Clint and the world thought Bobbi was dead when she had actually been kidnapped and held captive by the Skrulls for years. Prior to being abducted, Bobbi had been raped by the Phantom Rider which lead to Bobbi letting him die. After lying to Clint about his death, their marriage was on the rocks. Now that Clint and Bobbi have been reunited, will things work out this time?

Let's look back at some other heroes and their love lives. What about Spider-Man and Mary Jane. It looked like they were going to live happily ever after. They got married and had a kid on the way. The baby was taken and they were told it died during birth (now after Brand New Day, the baby may or may not even exist). In order to save life of Aunt May, Mary Jane made a bargain with Mephisto and their marriage has been wiped from existence. Did they have to return their wedding presents?

Green Arrow and Black Canary? On their wedding night Black Canary is almost killed by an imposter Green Arrow. Talk about a night she'll never forget. Once Ollie was rescued, they immediately had to go in search of his son, Connor. The conflict has continued over the way the Justice League should operate along with the recent actions of Ollie.

Captain America and Sharon Carter? When things were really going great, he was killed. Soon she finds out she's pregnant with his child. Soon she finds that she's under Dr. Faustus' control. Not only does she lose her baby, she finds out she was the one that pulled the trigger on Cap.

There are more tragic love stories (I won't even mention Kyle Rayner's past relationships). Some even worse than the ones mentioned. I'm not saying all super hero romances fail. There are some that have managed to survive. It just seems if you're a superhero, the odds are stacked against you. Is there any hope for the men and women that give up so much to protect the innocent? If you had to choose, would you rather have love or super powers?
