Off My Mind: Is Superboy's Secret Identity in Jeopardy?

It's almost like every issue someone else is discovering his secret.

For a superhero, especially a young one, the secret identity is the most important thing they have. Starting out their superhero career, it's essential that they protect the safety of their loved ones. Superboy hasn't always had a secret identity to worry about. As a clone, we was basically born at the age of sixteen. When he was accepted into Superman's private life and family, the identity of Conner Kent was created. Now that he's living in Smallville with Martha Kent, he needs to do everything he can to keep his secret identity a...secret.

No Caption Provided
In the first issue of his current series, Superboy finds out that fellow Smallville High classmate, Simon Valentine, knows his secret. Sure Simon seems like an eager kid wanting to be Conner's best friend but we already know he's destined to be his greatest friend as well as his greatest enemy. To make the situation worse, in issue #3, another classmate, Lori Luthor watched him change into Superboy. Yes, that's Luthor as in Lex Luthor. She's his niece. She may not be close to her Uncle Lex but the fact that she's a Luthor is pretty dangerous, not just for Conner, but everyone close to Superman as well.

What Conner needs to remember, it's not just his safety that is at risk. Because he's living with Martha, her life could be in danger. If people figure out her connection, it won't be long until they figure out that Clark Kent is Superman and married to Lois Lane. It goes on.

There's also the other members of the Teen Titans. Does every member that knows Superboy's secret automatically know Superman's? His teammates may be trustworthy but in comic books, it doesn't necessarily take much for a hero to turn rogue. Teammates that know his secret could be discovered by someone using telepathy. Look at how close Batman's secret was almost discovered in Gotham City Sirens because Catwoman knows and has some questionable friends

In issue#3 of Superboy, Bart Allen zips right up to Conner during a phone call. Did Bart look around the entire area to make sure no one was around to Conner walking and then suddenly have someone else appear? With more and more people discovering his secret identity, Superboy really needs to start being more careful otherwise things are going to get really bad for everyone around him.

I like the Smallville TV show touch that this series is taking.  I wonder how much Geoff Johns input gets to see print, I know Jeff Lemire is writing, but he also picked up from where Johns left off, so may be this is what Johns wants.

In the Smallville TV show there were a few who knew Clark's Identity, if anything it humbled him.  I feel this is what is happening with Conner.  By being humbled to protect his I.D. he is becoming closer to his Clark DNA and further away from his Lex DNA.

Plus it makes the story more fun, we all need a little teenage drama.  This is may be the lightest book I am reading and it is nice because it off sets the darker serious comics I tend to prefer.

I don't care what they do with his Identity as the only news I want to hear about Conner is that he is dying or leaving the Teen Titans so the book isn't brought down with his being there.

In all honesty Superboy will not have to worry about his secret identity dilemma, they will find someway for Simon Valentine to "use" Conner to the best of his ability which will lead to a major falling out, and Lena will just be his confidant, which will turn into more and then there will be a love triangle between her superboy and wonder girl.  The super family is not the bat family when it comes to secret identities.

How do people get tricked into thinking he's not Superboy? All that changes are his clothes. Also, there've only been 3 issues so far, so my guess is that the people discovering the secret now will either be close confidants or end up betraying him later on down the line.

In the article it said "it won't be long until they figure out that Clark Kent is Superman", shouldn't it be that Superman is Clark Kent since Clark Kent is really Clark Kent, the person he's always been?

Am I the only one creeped out when Comic Vine editors talk about characters in superhero comic books as if they were real people? It just sounds weird...

hmmmmmmm I guess we readers are forgetting that comics don't have to make sense, they just need to be entertaining, so what if the guys costume is just a shirt and a 3rd grader could ID him, so what that they put all these "circumstances" together and no one puts them together in comics, so what if Conner could potentially get Superman in some deep ish.......we are suppose to read and enjoy not do silly things like think.............................besides somebody's either gonna kill the two folks that know or they will get their mem's wiped lol (for anyone who couldn't tell I was being sarcastic)

He honestly needs a new costume, a new city, and a new name, he needs to get from up under supes cap and go be his own man or boy or what ever he is now.

1st off I really don't see the point of him having to go to school at all considering everything Clark went through while he was in school you would think he would stay away cause he will only be putting the school in more danger. So whats the purpose of his schooling is it :

Restraint and Proper use of his powers- cant be that Superboy has been doing what he's does for a long time he knows when and how to use his powers should the world need him, he is no longer the kid in the leather jacket.
Friends or Social life- can't necessarily be that, he hangs out with Teen titans on and off the "battlefield", friends of many of DC's superheroes (present and future), maybe its so he can have his own circle of friends? its only issue 3 and that's not working out for him too well.
Education?- Ninja please, the crystals in the fortress of solitude can teach much more about anything a book or teacher could.........right
Story- can't be that we have all read this story before a hero decides they want to be more down to earth and enrolls themselves into school to rub elbows with the common folks, sure Jeff Lemire has been doing an "OK" job so far I only hope he will be able to keep this book interesting

I realize that Superboy having his own book that he will have to be somewhere during his downtime, but I feel sort of tired of the whole superhero/school thing, I can see his growing attachment for Smallville, Ma Kent getting a chance to be a mom again, and already a new possible threat, new possible hero, and a new future time period, which is really all great I just hope the school won't play to big a deal in this comic.

Come on people. We all know that there is very little in comics that is believable. No mask, no real costume, Superboy isn't even trying to hide his secret.

Personally this whole "Conner Kent" idea was never ever good to begin with. Superboy has never been a carbon copy of Clark Kent/Superman and in current continuity he's being pushed as this wannabe Clark Kent/Superman. I understand Superman's inspirational but damn. It makes me miss the days of "Don't ever call me... "Superboy"!" If they eliminate the secret identity aspect then that's one less Clark Kent comparison... and I'm just fine with that.

I don't mind it...he needs some friends outside of the Teen Titans that he can talk to and friends at school that can cover for him in emergencies....think of it this way....on Smallville Clark had Pete and Chloe who both knew his secret identity

The comic doesn't say.  Most likely he's using his X-Ray vision to look for the source of what's causing people to black out and him to stagger.

Both the DC and Marvel public are affected by a Spell of Ignorance which makes all non-super beings blind to the obvious.

Yes, because glasses have the mystical power to completely alter the structure of one's face. Making it impossible to tell somebody is a super hero when they take them off.

That's sort of how it comes across... his whole identity has been wrapped up in being a clone / superhero / Teen Titan such that anything resembling normalcy is an add-on.  Right before Bart shows up he says he takes normalcy for granted (being forced to walk to school instead of simply flying there).  So having a secret identity, normal civilian loved ones, and a civilian life at stake is still new to him (even at the Johns run of Adventure, Superboy was more ready to ditch school than attend).  That doesn't mean he isn't invested in his civilian life... this issue raises those concerns directly: Conner's concerned about the farmers, Conner raises the secret identity issue with Simon and Ma's safety... so he's not oblivious to it, just new and unpracticed at it (shutting Simon out, for example, being an overly blunt way to protect the secret).

In terms of characterization, I think it's doing OK.  We get the wide shot to establish Conner's alone before Bart appears and Conner didn't explicitly ask Bart to appear so we can't condemn him for not being careful enough; and exposition about Bart making sure Conner was alone or Conner scolding Bart afterwards would have probably been clunky.  The only thing in this issue that's maybe questionable is Conner changing in the middle of school, but that was during an imminent compromising attack... he didn't know what was happening or how he'd have to respond so best to do it in the Superboy persona as soon as possible rather than compromise the Conner identity; everyone around him was blacked out and he felt like he was going down too, so his change wasn't unreasonable.

In terms of rationalization- that glasses and flannel work to hide a secret identity... that's just a convention or trope you have to accept as part of the genre.

Am I the only one laughing at the fact that people are shocked about these SECRET IDENTITIES in the DCU. I mean seriously without a mask where the secret? How the hell were people shocked about Black Canary? How did no one in STar City figure out their mayor was Green Arrow who the hell else would sport that mustache and beard combo?! And the Supers don't wear mask unless you count their glasses...but in Conners case he doesn't even wear those? Are people just blind and stupid in the DCU or what?

It seems like a contrived decision for the sole purpose of providing additional teenage drama and angst to the comic.

That said it could also perhaps be the first step for Connor to ditch the black t-shirt and jeans look and take on a more 'superhero' outfit and attitude.

I think the only reason Bart super speeded is because he thinks Kansas is boring, and no one is really going to just pop out. However, what I want to know is how did Bart know where to find Superboy? I guess he did Super speed around all of Smallville to look for Conner. Besides, Conner doesn't even have a costume, just a shirt with Superman's "S" planted on it. So if Conner wants to be more careful, he's going to have to create his own suit.

This is what Barry said about Super speed

I too thought it odd that only three issues in and we already have two people who know Conner is Superboy. I was having this same conversation with fellow ComicViner Silkcuts. He is of  the mind it adds to the teen drama, which it certainly does. I kinda think Lemire is giving Conner his own Lana Lang and Pete Ross.

I love that Jeff Lemire is pretty much saying, "To hell with this stupid charade that is Superboy's secret identity..." WORST secret ever because Superboy doesn't even where a mask or a hat like Green Arrow. So in a way, it's updating the character because previous generation might be a little more naive but this generation is much sharper and maybe a little more cynical with trust.

Now, the trick is...can he stay low key enough so the consensus of students don't catch on? or will this be the greatest secret Smallville will hold?
