Off My Mind: Is Franklin Richards the Most Powerful Person in the Marvel Universe?

Is all this power safe in the hands of a child?

Franklin Richards is destined to be one of the most powerful mutants in the future of the Marvel Universe. As the child of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, he should be guaranteed to become a great hero. The problem is, Franklin possesses an insane level of power. We all know that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Franklin has been allowed to use his powers from time to time. In his younger days, he was even a member of Power Pack. Due to the fact that he has too much power and could easily become unstable, safeguards were put in place. Franklin has had powerful psychic dampers put in his mind to prevent himself from accessing his incredible reality-manipulating powers.

No Caption Provided

But if he possesses such great powers, is it really possible to prevent him from accessing them? If Franklin has the ability to change reality and create new worlds, what happens if he decides to use his powers whenever he sees fit?

== TEASER ==

The recent revelation and display in Fear Itself #5 was surprising.

This shows that Franklin has been holding back. Having the power to do pretty much anything you want is a lot to handle. Place that level of power in a child's hands and you're guaranteed to have a bad outcome. Considering his kid sister, Valeria, is smarter than their father and Franklin's left looking like a dork, it is very surprising he doesn't try to compete with her. According to the number of candles on his recent birthday cake, Franklin's five. What five-year-old wouldn't want to show off or create cool things given the power?

Being an omega-class mutant, Franklin has the ability to change reality. Think about that. He can make anything he thinks of come true. Showing bits of his potential over the years, it was during the Onslaught storyline where he first reshaped reality. When it appeared his parents and other heroes had died, he actually created the Heroes Reborn pocket universe.

Because of the risks of a child possessing such power, Franklin has been depowered several times. The question remained what his future would hold. Several times we've seen different adult versions of Franklin. In Fantastic Four #245 he came back, long hair and no memory of who he was until reunited with his mom. Reed's father, Nathaniel, kidnapped him are brought back his teenage counterpart who went by the name Psi-Lord. And of course there was the adult Franklin who was Rachel Summers' boyfriend in the Days of Future Past story.

No Caption Provided

It was in on his birthday in issue #574 he was visited by yet another future version of himself. As the alarms went off and the Fantastic Four rushed to deal with the intruder, the older Franklin flipped the mental switch in his younger self and gave him access to his powers once again. Later young Franklin was seen under the covers creating a new universe. The reason he came back and did this was because Valeria, in the future, told him to.

The way he used his powers in Fear Itself #5 raises some questions. If he can save a mortally wounded person, what else can he do. He can manipulate reality. The bigger question is how come he didn't do more during the Human Torch's last stand? That occurred after Franklin was visited by his older self. He might have promised his parents that he wouldn't use his powers but would a kid whose parents are absolute heroes just sit back and let his uncle die? He used his powers in front of Johnny but could have easily wiped out an Annihilus Wave. Is it within his power to revive him (assuming Johnny actually did die since we didn't see a body)?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This much power in the hands of a child is frightening. Even if Franklin has the best of intentions and tries to follow the example of his family, the dangers of his powers is astronomical. We've seen kids throw temper tantrums. How do you discipline a child that can create a universe?

Reed and Sue are apparently unaware that Franklin has control over his powers again. Reed would be able to understand the severity of the situation. Valeria speculated that their father did know which is why he had the Leech with his mutant dampering powers room with Franklin.

Psychic dampers temporarily worked in the past but what if Franklin didn't want his powers dampened? His future self seemed to be in control but the future isn't set. Because there has been so many different future versions, it can't be determined what his actual future may hold. Mister Fantastic has faced incredible odds and defeated powerful villains but will he be prepared to deal with his son? He has to admit fully to himself that Frankln has his powers again. Will there be anything he can do if Franklin doesn't want him to?

Eventually Hope summers will surpass every mutant in marvel she is an omega level mutant with the power of

Pluripotent Echopraxia

which allows her to psychically duplicate the power-signature of mutants physically near her

not to mention she is a host of the phoenix force cable stated that she is actually apart of the phoenix force.

as such she is immortal because if she is ever destroyed or killed the Phoenix force will bring her back to life

He is in all likelihood the most powerful non-amped character on Earth . But his feats currently don't make him the most powerful character in the MU .

As it has been mentioned what would happen if he had a tantrum what are the real upper limits of his powers, could he end the universe I wonder, erasing beings like Galactus, The Watchers and all similarly powerful beings. One other things if he was using his powers at their max would leech be able to dampen that level of power.

I think he's really strong, but nowhere the most powerful. He may have gotten stronger though.... And as an adult may become immensely strong, but he does nothing with his arm that Beyonder couldn't do with a squint of an eye. I think Onslaught is stronger than Franklin still... but Franklin is above Scarlet Witch.

franklin is the ultimate fail safe for Marvel to write themselves out of any conundrum or unpopular decision or story line.  He can  be used to be the catalyst and justify any crossover event within or without the company ( His universe + Ultimate universe, Marvel + DC, etc..)  He will be used to bring back the Torch.  If Marvel wanted to have the balls, they would have let the Thing die, as opposed or in addition to killing Cap Barnes.  Franklin can never die, because he will always be written back into existence.

Nightcrawler and Madrox were both born with their powers. It's rare, but it happens.

Earth X has a really good twist on Franklin. It's not canon, but it's kick-ass nonetheless.

It's a moot point to ask the question of whether he should have all of these powers.  A better question would be, how do you prevent him from using them if there is concern with the wielder ?  You'd have to tread lightly, as you don't want to upset someone who may not have the greatest control of temper and whims.

Interesting how they recycle certain mutants powers. The Scarlet Witch,The Phoenix Jean Grey, and Rachel Summers all had these powers though Scarlet Witch had it almost perfected but she went insane in the end. Both Phoenix wielders have it but never dug deep enough into the Phoenix Force to use it. Who know could you imagine Hope and Franklin coming into contact with each other. What a nightmare that would be.

I have always liked Franklin - my biggest gripe, however, is he doesn't age...how did Valerie get to be so old, when Franklin didn't age in relation to her?  It seems like the writers/editorial staff can't seem to think of him outside of a five-year old box...he should be getting into his tweens by now...which also would bring all sorts of story potentials...

@spikevalentine, he didn't have anything to do with the Days of Future Pass, but he was shown within it in the future (as an adult) with Rachel Gray, just fyi -

I think that photo of Billy Mumy was from an episode of the "Outer Limits" where he controlled people.

Franklin was originally said to be the most powerful (mutant) person who ever lived.  However, that was a very long time ago (1960's) in real-time and way before Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, X-Man, Onslaught, White Phoenix, etc.  Not sure if he is now thee most powerful.

Also, perhaps the Earth where he is thee most powerful is a different one from 616. Or perhaps due to the things that happened to Franklin, much of the destructive mind energy that his father Reed was worrying about is now gone, having been used to close down his mind, reopen it, destroy and Ultron and now channeled into all his various dream abilities.   The writers seem to have strayed away from the fact that Franklin was to one day destroy worlds with his vast, uncontrollable power.

I think as Franklin gets older on Earth 616, it is possible that he will be a very powerful TP/TK, but not more-so than anyone we have seen, not even near Xavier and far from thee most powerful.  Unless things change from how they are now shown...........then better watch out!!

Franklin is potentially one of the most powerful beings in existence but as with most main stream comics (DC and Marvel) does not allow for the passage of time. The problem with that is we can be shown any number of future versions of Franklin but until he actually grows up its all moot. Given the slow passage of time it will be over 50 years before he can grow up.

lol the first thing I thought was Anthony from Twilight Zone XD

Franklin could very well be the most interesting future Marvel develops.

Or he could be one of those bratty kids who will force everyone to obey him, well because he can (didn't he have celestial level reality warp? or did they retcon that too)

Powers aren't necessarily inherited based on those of a parent. Especially when it comes to the genetic mutations related to the X-Gene, folk.

It can work, but we are dealing with a business, one that (at least) believes it needs its status quo to succeed financially.
Marvel could take a note or two from how DBZ handled Gohan being more powerful than goku (at least for a while). They eventually totally screwed the pooch with that during DBGT.

All I'm sayin' is does it really matter, he's been a little kid forever it seems like. How long ago was Onslaught, I think I was in middle school when that happened. At this rate we are going to be long gone by the time he ever reaches adulthood. But to answer your question, yes. I thought it was established a long time ago that he was one of the most powerful beings in th galaxy. My question would be if he has all this power then why can't he control it?

Well, we're looking at a person who exploded mephisto with a simple thought when he hurt his parents. He's remade the entire world, including creating life as he restored dead heroes and remade everyone as he remembered them. I have to say that I've seen no one else with this kind of power. His only limitation seems to be the fact he is incapable of aging past 9, as he's been a child for 30 some odd years now. I mean, power pack were the same age and went on to become teenagers, why didn't he?

I think he is the most overrated über powerful character in Marvel. First he has to grow into his potential? You know like grow? lol He won't grow... then even if then, in many future realities like Fantastic Four The End, he was just run of the mill really power wise. Franklin isn't really that popular so coupled with his powers he will really just be a deus ex machina type character, sort of more there to serve bigger more popular FF characters and themes.
Bingo...said everything I needed to say. As of now kids' just a walking plot convenience. Hickman writes the kid well though and having Leech be on the FF so that he never has to deal with the classic "Why didn't they just have Franklin fix it?!" question is a wise move.

Mutant aging factor ;). She time-traveled too, plus spent time dead or near dead.

Most of the young characters who age significantly in the marvel universe do it as a result of time traveling or sitting in a pocket universe. Time doesn't pass normally there anymore (there used to be pretty regular time markers, like Christmas issues).

Do you know why power corrupts absolutely G-man? its because we act out in fear that the person with the power will misuse it and so we set up precautions in case something like that happens, and when we act out in fear its only natural for a person with power to act out in rage. but when we look at the likes of superman who has the power to take over the world, he doesn't. cause in the end he knows its better for people to love you for who you really are and not love you because they fear your power. yeah the kid is like half the infinity gauntlet all rolled into one. but we have to give him benefit of the doubt that he can make the right decisions.
