Off My Mind: How Mighty is Captain America's New Avengers Lineup?

Picking the members of a team has to be done carefully. Spoilers from AVENGERS #19

There's been a lot of discussion about choosing members of a team. We looked at the characteristics teams should have as well as how leaders of teams are selected. Some teams rarely change their roster. Other teams, like the Justice League or Avengers, are constantly changing members.

With the current disasters in the Marvel Universe, the time came to re-examine where they were and what would be best for the world. With so many members running around, Captain America felt the time was to narrow it down, to figure out who the actual team would consist of. Luke Cage's New Avengers would remain untouched but Cap's Avengers are considered the sanctioned authority.

No Caption Provided

It was Tony Stark's idea that the team needed some old friends. Captain America now has to decide who stays on the team and who he needs to try to recruit. It won't be an easy task. He needs to figure out who will make the team balanced in terms of personality and firepower. And there's also the fact that not everyone asked will want to join the team. As we look over the roster he's chosen, be aware that there will be some spoilers to Avengers #19, but if you've seen the cover, you basically already know who's on the team.

== TEASER ==

Storm

No Caption Provided

Cap started out asking Black Panther to rejoin. He told him he'd be there when they need him but he has other things he needs to do (he better do them quickly since word is out his title is ending soon). T'challa is in a weird place right now (not in terms of location). He left Wakanda and took up residence in Hell's Kitchen. Despite being married to Storm, he insisted on fighting his own battles without her help. And similarly, he doesn't want the Avengers' help either.

He told Steve that it wasn't a friendly face he needed but instead, firepower. He suggested his wife. Storm is an insanely powerful mutant. There's no question why many call her a goddess. Besides firepower, she is also a formidable hand-to-hand fighter. Having lead the X-Men for so long, she even has some tactical skills. She can fly and blast enemies from afar. She is clearly a great addition to the team.

Vision

No Caption Provided

Vision originally joined back in Avengers (Vol. 1) #58. Don't confuse this Vision with the one running around with the Young Avengers. This is the original, the one destroyed in Avengers #500.

What does he add to the team? He's incredibly intelligent (he has a machine for a brain). This means he can also interface with computers and other forms of technology. He can fly (just like Storm). He can alter the density of his body, thus being 'bullet-proof' or able to phase through objects (pretty handy if you need to sneak into a place). He can emit solar radiation through the jewel on his forehead and there always his signature move, phasing his hand into someone and increasing his density until they pass out from the pain.

Vision hasn't always been totally stable so hopefully Stark got all the bugs worked out.

Red Hulk

No Caption Provided

Say what you want about the name or idea, having a Hulk on the team is a great asset, as long as they don't smash everything. Red Hulk isn't your typical Hulk. As General Thunderbolt Ross, he has years of experience on the battlefield. During his war against Hulk, he went up against some crazy things. Not only is he good at tactical decisions, he's not one to back down from a fight.

Red Hulk has been with the team for a little while now. He joined up in issue #12 and has more than proven his worth and loyalty. He's also gone on several missions for Cap during his Commander Rogers days. Since the team doesn't need any more tactical members, it's his strength that will truly be an asset. Every team should have a powerhouse member and Red Hulk is it. If there's an enemy that needs smashing, you know he'll be able to get the job done.

Quake

No Caption Provided

Agent Daisy Johnson hasn't been active in the superhero community for very long, she's only eighteen years old. But Nick Fury immediately recognized her potential. As a member of S.H.I.E.L.D., she soon gained Level 10 Clearance, the highest level possible (only Fury and Black Widow have this level of clearance).

Besides her aptitude in training and espionage, she also has her powers. The reason she's called Quake is she can generate earthquakes. She learned to control her seismic vibrations to be able to pinpoint them and cause individual items to explode. She even exploded Wolverine's heart from the inside. That and her black-ops skills come in real handy in different situations.

Protector

No Caption Provided

Noh-Varr is a character that keeps popping up on teams then quietly sneaks away. As a member of the Kree, he possesses great strength and is also extremely intelligent (he managed to help build a Space-Time Continuum Viewer. He can also do some freaky things with the nanotechnolgy in his saliva, such as controlling people.

He officially joined the team in issue #6 and hopefully he'll play a bigger role in the team this time.

Hawkeye and Spider-Woman

No Caption Provided

The two of these have been Avengers for some time now. Hawkeye joined in 1965's issue #16. Spider-Woman's story is a little different since when she first joined, it was really the Skrull Queen. She was brought back in New Avengers (Vol. 1) #48 and then joined officially on the Avengers in issue #1.

Both have experience and skills that make them an asset to the team. But, there might be some problems. Clint has volunteered to be a mentor or teacher at the Avengers Academy, now located on the West Coast.

The two are in the early stages of developing a romantic relationship. We've already looked at the question of whether or not team members should get involved with each other. This could cause some distractions that could be dangerous in the field.

Iron Man

No Caption Provided

Iron Man's been around since the beginning. He's the guy with the vision. He's the one that wants to rebuild everything (the Avengers Tower, Vision, the team, etc).

He's a great guy to have on the team because of his brains. He can build some crazy suits than do a lot of damage to the enemies. And with Vision up and running, it'll be good to have a genius on the team in case something goes wrong.

As with some of the others, it's not clear how much time he'll be able to devote to the team. He has his own priorities with trying to rebuild his company (yet another thing to rebuild). But Tony's pretty much always been there for the team so this time shouldn't be any different.

Who's out?

No Caption Provided

Spider-Man and Wolverine have been going back and forth between the Avengers and New Avengers. As Wolverine points out, they already have a mutant and a spider-person. Ms. Marvel will likely stay with the New Avengers. Doctor Strange is also a member of the New Avengers but with the Defenders coming back, who knows if he'll split his time between both teams. Iron Fist and Mockingbird will also remain on the New Avengers. The Thing is feeling bad about being possessed and destroying the Tower during FEAR ITSELF, so we'll have to see if he stays with the New Avengers.

Beast, Black Widow, War Machine, Ant-Man and Valkyrie are part of the Secret Avengers. Moon Knight doesn't appear to have a place on any team.

Problems?

The team has a lot of leaders on it. Cap, Iron Man, Storm, Vision and even Red Hulk could all make plans during a battle. Hopefully everyone will not be able to resist the fact that Captain America is the ultimate leader and should always be looked to when time for decisions.

No telepath? Having someone with telepathy makes it easier for the team to remain in contact with each other. With all the brains and technology, they could easily whip up some sort of tiny communication devices but sometimes telepathy is easier. And you don't have to worry about batteries dying.

Magic? They don't have any protection against mystical attacks.

Speed? They don't have a dedicated speedster although Noh-Varr has been said to have fast reflexes. Hopefully speed won't be a major issue with all the other powers on the team.

Summary

No Caption Provided

The team appears to be pretty well-rounded. There are a couple areas to be concerned with but it looks like Cap chose a pretty good roster. Black Panther will probably start hanging out with them more often. His fighting skills (along with Cap's) will add even more to the team when fighting the villains.

The big question is how will this team work together. With some veteran members and new Avengers, they're going to have to spend some time getting to know each other and each other's abilities. They could have all the firepower and skills in the world but if they can't work together as a team, none of that will matter.

Spidey should never have joined the Avengers. He's in the Fantastic Four, which has been like his dream since...well...Amazing Spider-Man#1!

No more multiple team memberships!

Captain America - He'll always be the leader. I wouldn't prefer anyone else.

Iron Man - As one of the big three, he deserves every right to be there.

Vision - I like Vision. He'll be a sort of tech-link to the entire team. I think he'll be quite useful to the team.

Storm - Listen, I appreciate that mutants, particularly Storm and Wolverine, who feel the need to serve with the Avengers, but they really have more important things to do. Storm should be in San Francisco with Cyclops, helping him and her fellow mutants thrive. And Wolverine's the headmaster of a damn school now, if he didn't have the time to be on the team then, he certainly can't do it now. Maybe of the mutant numbers were stronger, I'd approve Storm being on the team, but right now, I don't think that she belongs.

Red Hulk - Jeez, Marvel really wants to shove this character down our throats. Honestly, though, he's become better since Loeb had him. He's actually been a little interesting lately. He's been a soldier, so he'll take orders. Especially if Cap is giving it to him. I'll give him a shot.

Protector - I think his change after Secret Invasion was extremely too sudden. I feel that they haven't given him any chance to develop. But, I think the Avengers will be good for him. From what I understand, he's pretty powerful.

Quake - She was cool during Secret War, but jeez, why wouldn't you put her on the Secret Avengers? She's ideal for that team. I'm skeptical with her presence.

Hawkeye - I think Hawkeye is an excellent Avenger. I also think that he's an excellent teacher at the Academy. If he can balance both, good on him.

Spider Woman - I've been anti-Spider-Woman since Secret Invasion. When she was the Skrull Queen, she actually proved herself to be on the team. Then, when the real Spider-Woman returned, they put her on the team because (from what it looked like) they didn't want her to feel bad. That's a stupid reason for her to be on the team and I honestly don't approve her being there. What has she even done for them since her being there?

What I think is that the New Avengers should just be gotten rid of. Seriously, what do they do that the Avengers don't? The Avengers could use characters like Ms. Marvel, Dr. Strange, and Iron Fist.

Yup. Back in the early eighties I thought wolverine was awesome, (seeing as I loved the X-men and am Canadian), but Marvel has successfully made me completely sick of the character. I almost can't stand him now.

I think it's a very sound lineup, though not nearly as powerful as Cyclops' Extinction Team, ha ha ha ha.

Granted, it's not as unpredictable either. The only member Cap really needs to worry about is Red Hulk.

Storm - As Queen of Wakanda with a missing king, and a recently accepted post of #2 with the Utopia based X-Men, she should not be included on the team. There is simply too much on her plate, but Marvel with conveniently ignore this to have another big name in the book. Under different circumstances it would be a great pick.

I hope they acknowledge that Storm being a part of the world's most popular superhero team could possibly help mutant's now tarnished reputation.

The Avengers would die vs Cyclops' X-men team. It makes no BLOODY sense to have her as an Avenger!!!

I decided to drop Avengers after issue 18 and it looks like I made the right choice. I like a lot of the people in this book, but there really isn't anything here to suck me in. I'll stick with new avengers for a bit longer and see if that gets any better

I am happy that there is no Wolverine or Spiderman. They are still New Avengers, which makes sense they both live in New York State. There should be a two team limit for any character. Don't need two Spider Characters on the same team. This will give other deserving characters a chance to get exposure.

I like the Red Hulk on the Avengers need a heavy hitter since Thor was Killed. There are 2 other possibilities out there Wonder Man who is currently Anti-Avengers and Hercules who is depowered, Aye Caramba why not the original She-Hulk she is an Avenger!!!

I love Storm, being on the Avengers just add more positive light for the mutant cause. If Beast, Wolverine, and Storm are, then we say if Capt. America trust them shouldn't you ???

Marvel Doesn't have a lot of heavy hitting Women.

Ms. Marvel is on New Avengers, but they need her firepower. As far as raw power, Scarlet Witch was always just a team player until she went over the edge. Her fate is not decided yet, but I say bring her back and stop messing with her. Other women who are avengers and we have not seen in a While, Photon is potentially a real heavyweight. Let's not forget about Echo, a master of combat. Sersi, Thena, Crystal and Moondragon are all not doing anything. Black Widow should be leading the Secret Avengers. Maybe we could get Sif to join the Avengers in honor of Thor, her power and ferocity could be really great. I like this, Photon, Sif and Echoe should join.

As Far as male power houses, let's look at Quasar, Darkhawk recently got an upgrade, maybe he can become an Avenger. Nova has power, he will be making a come back soon. I think they would be better off as Guaridians of the Galaxy.

What about some more New Warriors, who are we missing, Namorita, Firestar and Torpedo, all have potential to be major characters.

Vision!!!!! They are just going to just announce the Vision, whaaaaaaaaat??? It's been years since we have seen this incarnation. For his comeback there should be a subplot for about 5 issues with his debut in the 6th. Just can't pull the rabbit out of the hat. If that was possible, why didn't they do this years ago.

On the whole if we are going to run 3 teams, then I am mostly happy with the lineups. Cap should not lead the Secret Avengers, that's why we have the Widow, she is a masterspy and also has been a chairman of the Avengers. It is past time to bring Herc back.

It's not a bad roster and its deverse, but seriously, when Osborn has long time S.H.I.E.L.D agents going to his side because they are feeling "super heroes bad, super terrorists good", I really think it's time that Bendis needs to really rethink his stories and some of the characterzation. I don't get why super hero teams are an issue with him. His Daredevil, Moonknight runs have been great. His Avengers left me cold after the Hood was able to just magically get a hold of all the Infinity Gems. Everything with the return of Norman Osborn has made Lex Luthor's ability to escape the law seem plausible. Seriously! He conspired and killed a football stadium of people to get the Seige going. Let the politicians are: "Oh, we can't say anything, he has dirt on us." Now, he's running all the major terrorist groups of the world. Cap's new Avenger rosters need some more serious diveristy in telepaths, magic and black opps.

Captain America and Iron-man these guys are unquestionably avengers

Storm: i am on the fence about.... lets face it the x-books with the exclusion of X-factor are just terrible at the moment perhaps Storm been on the avengers will give her a chance to add a litle but of special sunshine

Hawkeye: his entire death and resurrection thing never convinced me i have put up with him when he has been in his place as a New Avenger... but now hmmm to be honest i am a little sick of him. i have allways considered him a B list avenger.. not too sure about his "Might"

Rulk: Never cared for the character i always thought of the Rulk as a lazy way of marvel to try and create some publicity and nothing more.

Quake...... Quake who. these are the Avengers the flagship characters of marvel i just see Quake as way too out of place. Secret Avengers Yes Mighty no

Spiderwomen: i actually liked her when she was a Skrull !

Vison: What they have two visions running around. how did that happen. i considered the major point of the Dead Avengers chaos war tie in was that the vison is dead and burred on a dusty workbench somewhere and we where to all give the new vision a chance. when did this guy get resurrected knowing bendis he will be the ultron in disguise ready to destroy the avengers.

Novah: really just seems out of place on a team which has vision and Ironman as techy... i guess we really need a proper captain marvel again.... sigh i guess i miss guardians of the galaxy.

And now the rest !

Spidey and wolverine not been on the team. i didn't mind them been avengers as frankly they are mighty they are well known faces and they are well established characters. practically made them perfect for the Avengers. the problem was Marvel used them too much everywhere else.

so who to replace?

Super Strength: I would suggest perhaps Amp up Ms Marvels strength Levels so that she is atleast over the 100 ton mark ( i know how power has really varried over the years)

The God: or in this case the goddess in the form of Valkyrie i never understood why she was placed on a secret Avengers team

The Alien: yes i know this is my own personal wet dream but please put Deaths Head on the Avengers.. he would really round of the team niceley and after all his feats including going toe totoe with transformers charcters no one can accuse him of not been mighty.

I'm glad Spiderman and Woverine are off the team, they have their own shit to deal with. And throwing them all over every event and every story is kinda leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.. now that I'm not being force-fed them anymore, I might eventually re-like their flava.

I know this is my second Post for this.

New Avengers: What is the mandate for the team - regional or domestic threats. Ms. Marvel, Thing(should be She-Hulk), Luke Cage, Wolverine, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, Mockingbird, Spiderman, Jessica Jones. Still Don't like Jessica Jones and Wolverine on the Avengers.

I Would like to see:

,New Avengers: Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, Mockingbird, Spider-man, Daredevil, Firestar.

Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Vision, Hercules, Red Hulk, Hawkeye, Photon, Sersi, Protector, Quake, Scarlet Witch.

Secret Avengers: Black Widow, War Machine(stealth armor), Ant Man, Machine Man, Cloak, Dagger, Valkyrie, Echo with Stark implants to compensate for her deafness.

Avengers Academy: Henry Pym, Tigra, Quicksilver, Hawkeye (should not be here full time), Jacosta(don't keep her dead for too long)

I would switch Valkyrie with Quake.

Even though they are now conspiciously absent, Firestar, Speedball and Justice would make a fine addition to any these teams. If you add Nova and Namorita too it you have an excellent start to a better New Warriors team with there added Experience. Throw if you throw in Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Spider-man and then you would have a really good New Avengers team. Then you could Have Power Man, Iron fist, Shroud, Daredevil, Cloak, Dagger, Spider-Man, Black Cat, Elektra take care of New York, they are Avenger Lite.

Wonder Man needs to get with the program, Scarelt Witch deserves to have a second chance. Falcon Needs to have some kind of offense added to wings courtesy of Stark.

Is there anyone from the iniative really ready for the big leaugues. I would pick anyone from the New X-men over the intiative, which Means marvel needs to work on creating cooler Avengers.

X-Men Vs the Avengers who would win. Close call with Thor, Hercules and Wonder Man, I would go Avengers without I vote X-men.

Glad vision is back- thought he would have a better return tho.

I'd prefer if storm was only based on utopia/wakanda but better her than wolverine on the team imo.

Cap and Tony are classics.

It would be cool to see the addition of Ms. Marvel, Sersi, Valkyrie or Echo perhaps...

Unsure about rulk.

Writers are doing their homework I see...

Reason spidey is out? after spider island he needs to be concentrate in his job which is pretty much defending his city and with the avengers + the new avengers AND the future foundation he's been really busy, is good that hi's off the team cause now we'll get to see him kick ass in his own comic (who knows, maybe after Osborn new dark avengers get totally beat up; we might get to see GG back :p ).

About wolverine, I personally like him in any team but maybe the avengers wasn't the place for him, if he still hangs around with the new avengers it might okay, right? after decimation, second coming, dark reign and all of that he's been really REALLY busy. I mean people!!! Come on !!! ... Continuity, remember?? that's the whole joke in comics, if there's no continuity then its just pointless. One word ... Regenesis. After the events of Schism Wolverine and mutant kind had been facing some changes, its normal to see Logan leaving, right? cause now he'll be very busy with the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, protecting not only the kids but all mutants inside and also helping out the new avengers + his own title.

You see it as a good thing cause you didn't like rather wolverine or spider-man on the avengers main rooster but i see it as a good thing cause marvel is really working to keep the new comics titles related.

You probably won't read this part but, I'm I the only one curious about how's the two Vision's thing is going to work?

Real nice touch with quake cap, I want to say so badly; marvel kiddos what a great job. and the red hulk? Gereral Ross sure gives it a ''strong arm'' to the stuff, hope they don't do something stupid like ''Red Hulk in a rampage'' or Red Hulk vs the Avengers we've totally seen that before with The Hulk.

And btw, raise your hand if you miss wasp cause most of you probably tough of Jan as a useless hero but was the heart of the team.

And Natasha, oh my Natasha, where's Black Widow? also if Jack Of Hearts(which is a cool super hero) is still alive you think they'll keep him away from the avengers? I mean they brought the original Vision back after all this time.

Tell me guys (cause we know Thor won't be dead for long) which member of the marvel universe would you like as an avenger? I'll stay with X-23 (aun que nunca pasaria).

@Owie: Young Avengers Vision is made up of Iron Lad's armour, Avengers Vision is unrealted to him other than name (and some memories)

He is a fusion of Iron Lads armor and The Visions body.

I really, really like this team, especially with Vision and Quake. That's going to make for some interesting reading.

I do think the adult/kid Vision issue is sort of odd. I was under the impression (although I'm no expert) that the kid Vision was made of the adult Vision's old parts, so I don't get how that happened. And I agree that Bendis is not exactly the kind of writer who cares about this kind of issue at all, so we will likely never get to see this situation resolved. I mean, this just further complicates the tangled physical/mental web between the WW2 Human Torch, Wonder Man, Vision, and Young Avengers Vision (aka Jonas).

The body parts are actually Iron Lad's suit which downloaded Visions AI to discover the Young Avengers protocol. When Iron Lad left the suit it was a mixture of Visions AI and residual brain waves from young Kang that made it sentient.

Vision's comeback was so weak! He just walks out into the lawn with Ironman and everything done is Avengers 500 is undone just like that lol He deserved a better, more complete comeback than that.

Here's just a suggestion... I think Marvel should should already introduce The Ultimate Avengers. Now, this would not be on the Ultimate Universe. It would be on Earth-616, and I'm sure Marvel considered it sometime one way or the other... so, here goes:

War Machine: he will be supervising the team and will join on some missions and he's such a bad-ass dude!

Maria Hill : she will be the other supervisor and liaison, will also join the team on some missions too. It will be a shame if she will be just exiled on comics limbo... lot of potential here, people!

Captain Mar-Vell: the perfect field leader. It's about time for him to be resurrected - permanently! And please no impostors!

Vance Astro: yes, from the "original" Guardians of the Galaxy and not Major Victory; he will be the second-in-command

Human Torch: yes, "The Johnny Storm"

Archangel: 'nuff said!

Vindicator: she's meant to be an Avenger... time for some "vindicating, baby"!

Medusa: from the Royal Family of the Inhumans... every Avengers team should have royalty on it

Red She-Hulk: oh, yes!

Doctor Voodoo: the Avenger of the Supernatural!

Citizen V: the "legacy character"

Songbird: Luke Cage can vouch for her or she can just join Luke's team because of...

Dr. Spectrum: from the Squadron Supreme (Earth-712)... I know he has the same powers as Songbird's but he'll be great as an Avenger, besides his powers are light-based

and lastly...

Tiger's Beautiful Daughter: the sexy and deadly immortal martial artist.

I know there's too many of them, but that's why they will be called "The Ultimate Avengers"!

Oh, and one more thing, because they're not "Secret" anymore, Marvel should change the name from "Secret Avengers" to "Shadow Avengers" as opposed to Osborn's "Dark Avengers"...

I'm glad spidey has been dropped, he's been far too over-saturated lately. Besides being in the FF, New Avengers, Avengers, and the entire Spider-Island thing, it's getting slightly ridiculous. Also there was that "Avenging Spider-Man" thing this month. I love spidey, but COME ON, marvel. Calm is down a little!

I still question these rosters from the context that this is always done in front of the Marvel Press - and considering the history of the characters ... well are they really the epitome of what the Avengers should stand for?

What would be public reaction to Noh-Varr if they knew he was an alien?

There would certainly be a great deal of contention for "off-worlders" after Secret Invasion.

And then there is the Red Hulk - would Cap really have picked him? - When Thunderbolt Ross's OCD of the Hulk led him to being turned into the very thing he despised? (I don't buy it) - maybe to make sure he stayed in check, sure -

Which also leads me to the notion - WOLVERINE - should never - absolutely never be an Avenger - unstable - suffers from bouts of personality disorder and berserker rages - come on - give your reader some credit !

and will some PLEASE give VISION a make-over - the costume - uggghh !

ADDITIONALLY - I really wish they would work over Storm's character some - I want to like her - but she remains too aloof - and that character trait is a similar reason I think all-powerful/deity character's like the Sentry don't work well = as they are non-relatable - (oh - don't forget Noh-Varr - who really likes this guy anyway?)

@RainEffect: Why? Because he's the man! He's got the most charm of any of the heroes, and he's not a dick like Tony Stark. He's just an all-around cool dude with a great sense of humor.

But think of that list you have there... Natasha – as much as I love her – has dated or slept with nearly everyone (guess it comes with the being-a-spy-thing): Daredevil, Hawkeye, Hercules, Bucky, Tony Stark... And so does Clint Barton, so that made a lot of sense.

Wanda, is by most accounts, crazy. She was married to a robot... so...

And now Jessica – it makes perfect sense. He's the most charming, fun-loving male Avenger. She's a little shy, has had a rough time in life, could use the laughs and someone to trust. Plus she's got them super-charged pheromones. They go well together!

It's not like he will ever get to date Carol Danvers. I couldn't see that ever happening. I had more trouble believing the brief stint he had with Echo.

I want to see Noh-Varr get some loving. Dude's a regular heartthrob badass. He was sleeping with Moonstone in the Dark Avengers days before he abandoned that crazy train of a team. He's got the appeal and youthfulness to him, somebody get him a date!
