Off My Mind: How Do Heroes Prepare for Bad Weather During Patrols?

Not all heroes have super-immune systems so they have to be prepared.

It's always a major bummer when you find out the weather is taking a turn for the worse and you have plans. It could plans to go to work or hang out with a friend but a change in the weather could make all that more difficult.

When it comes to crime and the evil ways of supervillains, they don't stop when it gets cold or rains. That means the heroes have no choice but to continue doing their job. They have to go out on patrol in order to protect the innocent against the vile criminal scum that never takes a rest. A change in the weather might not affect some heroes but most of the heroes aren't invulnerable to the harsh conditions of the weather.

No Caption Provided

What can the average hero do? Are they prepared for the different changes in weather or they simply tough it out and keep doing their job?

"Alfred, prepare a hot bath in the Bat-tub."

Someone like Superman or Wonder Woman wouldn't have to worry about the cold rain or snow. You know Tony Stark has built a heater and air conditioning unit into his Iron Man Armor.

Even someone like Batman most likely has taking the weather under consideration. His suit probably has built-in bun warmers like some automobiles do. He probably has a different suit that keeps him cool during the summer temperatures.

But not all heroes have the luxury of having invulnerability or a fancy high-tech suit to protect them from the elements. The true hardcore heroes go out in nothing but spandex, regardless of what the weather is.

No Caption Provided

Imagine trying to fight crime in the snow or rain in nothing but spandex. This is the true test of being a hero. I've had my share of cold days growing up in the midwest. Playing in the snow can be fun but having to work in foul weather is nothing issue.

No Caption Provided

These days most heroes seem to have increased stamina and immune systems but they are not completely invulnerable. They still get bruised, bleed and can catch colds. Heroes can't just sit at home because the weather is crummy. They have too many innocents depending on their help. At the same time, if a hero goes out, saves a couple lives and ends up getting sick, many more lives could be at risk while they stay home eating chicken soup.

Spandex-wearing heroes could wear thermals underneath but if you think about that, it wouldn't really work. The spandex costumes are extremely tight-fitting and leave little to the imagination. You don't see any undergarment lines on superheroes (unless they wear their underpants on the outside, like Superman, Batman and others used to). If a hero like Spider-Man wore thermal long johns under his costume, he'd look a little bumpy.

No Caption Provided

It all goes down to clean living. Some heroes might embrace the change in the weather. They may even be prepared with an umbrella or special type of costume. It has seemed that the healing factors and immune systems of today's heroes has increased over the last couple decades. Spider-Man is one character that has had a cold on more than one occasion. I can't recall the last time I saw him sneeze so perhaps he's built up a tolerance. It might be that heroes just need to go out there and expose themselves to the harsh climates (and by expose, I mean still keeping their clothes on).

If a hero really doesn't want to deal with the bad weather, they could always relocate to a warmer area. Most of the heroes stick New York City. It does get cold there. Crime doesn't only exist in the Big Apple. There has to be a need for superheroes in warmer climates. Look at Kaine in SCARLET SPIDER. Houston had a bit of a problem on their hands and he was the only one around to deal with it.

When the bad weather comes, we all just need to deal with it. Still, I'm hoping it does clear up this coming weekend.

He also hates the humidity.

Some heroes-Like Wolverine of the X-Men- just have fast healing abilities that enable them to shrug off flu or colds- the rest like DD, FF just tough it out I presume!

I always thought Spider-Man's costume was more or less colored long johns. So he should be a little protected, right? *joke*

I always liked tio imagine that their costumes were insulated for cold & water resisant & stuff like that. I mean if your going to be a superhero shouldn't your costume be able to stand up to the elements?

Superheroes should carry a thermos, wear thermals or long johns under their costume and stock up on tissues and cold curing remedies whenever it's chilly outside. Oh and the essential for any superhero is chicken soup, the best way to beat a cold. Hopefully someone will get my last reference... ;)

You guys gotta stop assuming heroes like Spidey and Daredevil, Flash, ect are wearing spandex. Spandex would provide no protection at all, it's not the most resilient to wear and tear, and doesn't breathe well. If Spidey was wearing spandex in that storm, powers or no, he would freeze to death. Literally.

It's probably more like pleather, thin flanel, or light kevlar. Fabrics like UnderArrmour are probably very popular with vigilantes. Some are waterproof, provide warmth in the cold, but can breathe in the summer. They're light, and allow free movement for acrobatics. They don't tear easily either.

Think about it, if you're a vigilante who moves like a professional athlete/acrobat, you would probably shop where, or at places that sell those types of materials

(Trust me, as a cosplayer, I know.)

Has everyone forgotten about unstable molecule fabrics developed by Reed Richards? The FF and X-men both use them and I'm sure they've pretty much become the standard for Heroes. I'm sure DC has it's equivilant. Fabric that can stretch, transform with your body and even be invisible in synch with your powers would have no problem keeping you warm or cool as the situation demanded.

I don't think heroes do prepare for bad weather, Batman must realize by now that he looks pretty badass standing in the rain. Plus, in the issue of ASM where the ice demon was in NYC, Spider-Man was pretty much freezing, so heroes, even the genius ones, are not that well prepared.

@hectorsquall: Pffftt... Thank you. Just, thank you.

For certain characters this can be a huge problem. I don't think Cole MacGrath from Infamous could even go outside during some rain least he electrocute himself and others around him.

On the flip-side if you have, say, ice-powers that increase depending on how cold it is you aren't going to mind a freak blizzard in the middle of June.

But for every other guy who's powers aren't dependent on the elements it's mostly the same unless your equipment is somehow muddled by the weather.

@Namor1987:

but spider-man didn't have alot of money for a while, he works for the avengers now, and I'm assuming they pay him VERY well. but before all of that he didn't have a lot of money, i think that's the same with a lot of heroes that didn't have a scientific, and/or wealthy upbringing. if you're suddenly attacked by a radioactive house cat, and given super powers from it, but you only make 11thou a year, but want to become a superhero, you couldn't afford a costume made for all seasons, unless you skip out on rent for a few months... and i'm sure it would cost a couple hundred to even get the 'standard' costume made unless you made it yourself.

Peter's from NY so I would think he would be acclimated. After all he swings at high altitudes at high speeds daily and nightly, so one would be inclined to think the chap be with him anytime of the year. Logically given his hometown, he would be prepped, but Spider-man suffers from writer forgetfulness a lot in the small details. Sometimes he has protection from one thing, sometimes it's forgot, sometimes he has a device for a certain situation, sometimes he doesn't, ect. So it seems it's pretty much addressed in whatever manner the writer feels drives the story. Technically if everything he's come up with over the years stuck he should be standing like Batman as far as having things covered and whats at his disposal. I wonder of writers just don't pay attention (I'm trying to work on an actual chart myself after noticing), or drop what Peter learns and devises because they fear losing the everyman aspect of his character (what's more human than being susceptible to the flu virus really?). As another user pointed out, aside from having already covered this, he currently wears a fourth generation unstable molecule costume which not only fluctuates between the various team and situational looks he wears, but also covers him thermally (but again, reluctance of writers). It's a lot like tears. Wolverine has had a unstable molecule costume for ages now as have most of the X-Men. But wow is his brittle? Because artistically it's choice and writers feel it works for the effect, same as Spider-man. Sure, he could make a waterproof costume for rainy days, out of any real life Teflon based clothing polymer for example, thus adding a partial protection from incendiary as well, but, the scene really doesn't say " Spider-man brooding in a downpour on top of a church " without a soaked costume apparently.
