Off My Mind: Does Being in the X-Men Make Women Go Crazy?

There must be something in the water at the Xavier Institute.

Despite having a team name of X-Men, there have been several female members. This is something that has always been a little odd and sexist. We know it was Charles Xavier that started the team and of course he wanted the X from his name to be part of it. The fact that they were called men is strange, especially when you look at the name of other teams, such as the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Defenders and so on.

In the comics, the original team members were not even men yet, there were teens and one of them, Jean Grey, was clearly female. As the team's membership increased and changed, it was accepted that gender would not be an issue to be part of the team.

No Caption Provided

What's interesting is the majority of the women that became X-Men over the years have suffered from some sort of insanity or complete character change. Now I might be using using the word crazy lightly and this is in no way saying women are crazy. It's that we've seen the female members of the X-Men go through some pretty crazy changes. What is it about being an X-Man that makes women go a little crazy?

== TEASER ==

Jean Grey

No Caption Provided

Let's start with Jean Grey since she was the first female X-Man. Her moment of insanity started with the coming of the Phoenix Force. To be fair to Jean, you could argue that her major moment of insanity, destroying a complete star system and billions of lives, wasn't her doing. We found out years later later that Jean was actually in a hibernation pod at the bottom of the bay while the Phoenix Force struggled with trying to maintain human nature.

However the change or bonding was made, part of Jean was present in the Phoenix Force. With the birth of Jean as Phoenix, she still had her personality and feelings. She and Scott continued their relationship. An elemental force wouldn't have a need to put up the charade. As part of the X-Men, Jean/Phoenix easily succumbed to the manipulations of Mastermind. If Phoenix or Jean was truly portrayed as powerful as we would expect, she/it would've wiped out Mastermind the first moment he tried to manipulate her mind. There must be another explanation as to how Jean/Phoenix could lose it so easily and become Dark Phoenix.

Polaris

What about Lorna Dane? She was the second female to become part of the X-Men and hooked up with Havok. She had everything a person could ask for. She had a boyfriend, friends, a home and a place where she belonged. Eventually her association with the X-Men would drive her over the edge.

Because of her proximity to the band of mutants, it was almost fated that her world would be turned upside down. First she was kidnapped by the Shi'ar and mind controlled to try to kill Xavier. Later her mind and body were taken over by Malice. She found an enemy in her sister, Zaladane. Later she discovered that her true father was none other than the X-Men's greatest enemy, Magneto. She even had a weird run in with Doop...or maybe it was Daap, an alien that tried to kidnap her. Being a member of the team off and on, we soon saw quit the change in Lorna. Whether it was chasing Doop through the woods or just being part of the X-Men, Lorna went over to the other side but luckily managed to return to Havok's side.

Storm

No Caption Provided

Storm has always been one of the strongest female members of the X-Men (except when she's put in a situation where her claustrophobia can kick in). Storm may not have gone completely crazy as some of the other females but she did undergo a drastic change. When she first joined the team, she was the essence of elegance. She was worshipped as a goddess and almost became the mother figure of the group (but did she really believe she was an actual goddess?). She was the only one that could truly stand up to Wolverine and keep his violent tendencies in check. Above all else, Storm valued the sanctity of life.

No Caption Provided

When faced against the Morlocks, a member of the X-Men had to fight their leader, Callisto, to the death. Storm could barely stand and Nightcrawler volunteered to fight her. Storm insisted she would do it. Showing no remorse, Storm was victorious. She stabbed and nearly killed the Morlock.

Then Storm became a punk rocker...sort of. One of the biggest changes was when Storm decided to chop off her long flowing white hair and wore a mohawk. Gone was her traditional costume which was replaced by leather pants and the vest worn by Callisto.

No Caption Provided

Later when she lost her mutant abilities, she fought Cyclops in the Danger Room for leadership of the team. Whether it was a brilliant tactical move or just plain dirty fighting, she ripped off Cyclops' visor, knowing he could not use his optic blasts to stop her without fear of killing her or the other members observing in the Danger Room.

Psylocke

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

What about Betsy Braddock? When we first saw her, she was a prim and proper English lady. She wasn't quite X-Men material as she only had telepathic powers. She survived a terrible ordeal before going to the Xavier Institute and finally showed the beginning of her potential in surviving an attack by Sabretooth.

Then came the Siege Perilous and her transformation into an Asian assassin. This was a complete change to her calm character. Now dressed in a skimpy skin-tight suit, Betsy fits in perfectly with the other unstable but deadly members of X-Force.

Kitty Pryde

No Caption Provided

Kitty has always been a strong person. Not even being brainwashed, regressed and turned into a ninja had much of an affect on her psyche. Having her heart broken by Colossus, losing her best friend Illyanna or even spending months stuck out in space in that crazy missile didn't drive her over the edge.

But what was it that made her cut her hair and start carrying around Wolverine's broken bone claws? That's pretty gross (not necessarily the hair part but carrying his claws). There wasn't really a clear explanation for it. Maybe I need to go back and read those issues. I remember feeling like I had missed a half dozen issues or so when X-Men #100 cane out in 2000.

Lockheed's Dragon Girlfriend?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

When heroes and villains were transported away by the Beyonder (in Secret Wars), the X-Men and Lockheed were included. During their time there, Lockheed met a female dragon.

When they returned to Earth, rather than arrive back in Central Park, they were transported to Japan. Besides not knowing how they'd get home, they discovered that Lockheed's new girlfriend had grown...a lot. The X-Men and Sunfire tried to stop her but it was Lockheed that got through to her.

The other X-Ladies have had some unstable moments as well. Is it a matter that they're all secretly bothered by the fact that after all these years the team still continues to use a sexist name? The X-Men were pretty much a secret until Charles Xavier made his public statement and revealed the team. Some knew who they were but they weren't the franchise that they are today. They could have easily rebranded their name and retained their fancy X-logo. Look at how many other X-teams there are.

What the X-Men need to do is keep a better eye on their members. For whatever reason, the women are susceptible to having moments where they are not themselves. Sure some changes have been for the better but others have resulted in risks to themselves and others. Is it time the X-Men start a support group for its members? Should they be aware of the signs of instability? Who will be the next X-lady to go over the edge?

Good point.  Most of the X-Men guys have turned crazy or bad at one point, too.  Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Angel, Wolverine, Colossus, Mimic, Gambit....  There is just an allure to a hero failing, even if briefly.  Which makes the heroes that avoid it even more heroic by comparison.
These.

Never thought of the name X-Men as sexist. Man is, as we all know, often used to describe humanity as a whole. Know most see the X as part of Charles, I see it as Ex and see X-Men as Ex-Men. Mutants were regarded as human until their powers became evident. They are no longer human, they are mutants. This is how come X-Force as a team name never made any sense to me beyond it sounding neat and tying in with the X-Men.

You completely forgot about Rouge Storm. The time she lost control of her powers and seemed to have an entire different personality with hair is like fire.

Being a mutant isn't easy many of the characters both male and female have gone crazy in X-men.  Of course, there have been many characters over the years in comics who have been pushed to the brink.

We'll usually only the hot females in the x-men go super cray cray, but look at the male. Magneto was crazed by reliving his Holocaust experience through the Mutants, Xavier was taken over by Onslaught and he kept many secrets from the whole team. Wolverine was already crazy with his messed up past and said past constantly hunting him. Cyclops losses it when Jean loses it. Oh and his many kids that come to his timeline.(IMO as a Cyclops fan it would be best for her to stay dead and gone^3^.). Gambit  along with others(Wolvie and Cyke) were affected by apocalypse and he had a crazy past with the thieves and assassins guild  and he could never bone his gf Rogue which would drive many men loopy. Cable is only the way he is because of his future (I wish it was Bishop that died over him IMO.) But yeah the X-men team is probably the most relateble team in the MU you know with all the conflict and drama.

Exactly. And I don't see a single thing sexist about the name. But maybe I'm just an oppressive chauvinistic man-male!!! Not that think of it, I can't name a single super hero who hasn't had lapses in their sanity throughout their existence.

One would have to have something indifferent to rational thinking to conform to the activities and lifestyle endured by being a superohero to begin with,
any other person would be using their powers to seek everyday gainful employment and not endangering their lives against other worldy threats and
giant robots?

Nice insight, G-man!

I'm a huge proponent of female characters in comics, I think they're both underrated and underutilized. There's a lot of chauvinism and a lot of sexism surrounding treatment of female characters that always stirs up a sort of defensiveness amongst comic fans.

However, I look at it like this - the struggle of identity and power that these women face is not a weakness but an asset. You know Logan's never going to die, Thor is a god, Peter Parker gets laid and muscly (hardly geeky), Iron Man's suit has been ridiculously amped up past the point of reason, Hulk apparently can do whatever he pleases when in a rage....all of this provides for some very boring, 2-dimensional arcs where there's no genuine struggle, no genuine suspense. This trend with female characters is really an untapped goldmine the men should get in on because it's not like every other story patterned after Beowulf or Gilgamesh, it's complicated and thought-provoking.

Look at the Phoenix Saga, House of M, Storm's 80's punk transformation and there's clearly something incredibly compelling and iconic about those stories because they have some semblance of humanity and dimension to them that is rare in comic books and very innovative.

That being said, I would like to see some of my favorite crazy ladies enjoy power and self-assurance for periods of time. They deserve it.

Everyone is batshit in X-men. It's part of its endearment.

Also, I'd argue that the name X-men isn't inherently sexist. I'm not savvy on the reasoning behind the name, but since X is for Xavier and 'Men' comes from both "men" and wo"men" I'd simply say it's a way of classifying a human as just a mutant, not necessarily gender specific. Since you're right, there are plenty of female members, I'd think they would have changed the name or characters themselves would have voiced concerns by now if it were truly an issue. ;]

Here's my two cents...

First, the writers have formed some pretty stable and strong characters in most of the female X-Men (Polaris may be an exception) and since they are often the rocks of the team or the glue that helps hold them together, it is that much more of a shock to the team and to readers when something changes their normal behavior and personality.

The isn't quite as true for the X-Men.  Even today, I wouldn't be surprised if Wolverine were to gut one of his best friends if that was the mission.  He's still ready to do Wanda in to save reality.  Even after all of his growth as a character, the leadership qualities he has shown, and the father/big brother figure he's been to folks like Kitty, Jubilee, and Armor he's still got the potential.  However, even when Jean posed a threat to existence itself, he had trouble facing the fact that she may need to be taken out, because of what she meant to him.  I don't think there are that many other characters that can be said about.

As far as if the team name is sexist, here's my take.  "Men" is in reference to "mankind" or the "race of man", it sounds sexist but it is still how we refer to our race.  It is also possible that looking at the Latin roots, a group will always be masculine if even one male is in it.  As for the "X", I was always under the impression that it was because mutants were born with the X-gene that granted them theier powers.  Xavier's name was just a "coincidence".

Actually I just think it every woman in Marvel period. I mean Scarlet Witch goes crazy and no more mutant as well as take out most of the avenger. The Invisible Woman goes crazy and almost destroy the FF. It just Marvel period but most of the women come or have some tied with the X-men. I guess when they PMS it just insane.

Your examples are horrible! The characters in question are mentally unstable largely due to the fact that they are extremely powerful, not because they're in the x-men.

This is just my opinion, but I think some are reaching for sexism where there isn't any.

Why was it called X-Men? Because X-People or X-Persons just sound dumb? I dunno and I don't pretend to know.

And women definitely don't have sole shares in insanity in the marvel universe. I honestly think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't gone crazy or changed dramatically for some reason or no explanation at all.

Sometimes, insanity and different just make for an interesting story. If they didn't, we wouldn't have Ultimate, Xtreme and House of M would never of even been bothered with (regardless how ya felt about it).

Just my opinion of course.

Just to let you know, the name X-Men isn't necessarily sexist. In older forms of English, the word 'man' had the same meaning as 'human', as in not to a specific sex.

I don't think it's just being in the X-Men that makes women go crazy.  Any superhero or heroine undergoes massive amounts of trauma that would drive others crazy and crack under the stress.

Life or death situations on a daily basis, the trauma of seeing friends killed or maimed, and there is always the fact that many of them get beaten, kidnapped, or tortured every so often; and that's even counting the infrequent brainwashing and stuff like that.  Just about all of those women mentioned: Jean Grey/Phoenix, Polaris, Psylocke, and Kitty Pryde have all undergone brainwashing by others and that's got to leave an effect.  It's a kind of rape, only psychic or mental rather than physical.

And to be fair; the Invisible Woman of the FF and Tigra, Scarlet Witch, and She-Hulk of the Avengers have also underwent bouts of insanity.  Not to mention Marrina and Aurora of Alpha Flight and Moondragon and Hellcat of the Defenders have also suffered periods of mental instability.

In some cases, it's not just brainwashing but the effects of their own biology that causes them to undergo these periodic periods of instability.  Tigra's animalistic instincts getting the better of her, She-Hulk overdosing on gamma radiation, and Marrina was driven by her alien biology.

And the men haven't exactly been sterling examples of sanity either!  Several of the X-Men have gone over the edge at times: Wolverine is a prime example with those beserker rages of his.  Vulcan went bonkers.  Deadpool is certifiable and I think Archangel is wavering at times.  Heck a lot of them aren't models of stability!  Forge, Gambit, Namor, Madison Jeffries, Havok, even Colossus have seemed to go unhinged for a while.

And in my own personal opinion, Cyclops just hasn't really been the same since his possession by Apocalypse either.  And this is just in the X-Men; I haven't even touched the rest of the Marvel-verse, much less DC.

It's not that they're women; it's the fact that they happen to serve in an incredibly mentally stressful field.  There's something to be said about a support group.  Brainwashed Victims Anonymous?  Evil Possessions Group?  Temporary Insanity Support?

And Fractions man-crush on Cyke isn't sign of this era and has come at the expense of other characters? It's always about the writer. I get your point though.

I think that the changes these ladies went through had more to do with the demands of their lives as superheroes and experiences vs. their sex. There are so many heroines who have gone through changes, such as Sue when she was possessed by Malice, and Wanda also went 5150. Still, this is a nice assessment though :-).

"Whether it was a brilliant tactical move or just plain dirty fighting, she ripped off Cyclops' visor, knowing he could not use his optic blasts to stop her without fear of killing her or the other members observing in the Danger Room."

It was, quite certainly, a brilliant tactical move and dirty fighting.
Tell it to 'em again!!!
I still maintain the belief that Cykes could've easily won that match had he  simply opened his eyes and unloaded on Storm.      Anyway, I don't want to come off as injecting sexism where there isn't but I just believe that it was the writing of that era. Chris Claremont simply loved powerful females(( dang-near to a fault and at the expense of the male cast in my opinion.)) and maybe showing them become unstable was his way of portraying that...?
And Fractions man-crush on Cyke isn't sign of this era and has come at the expense of other characters? It's always about the writer. I get your point though.
As I get your point. I wish that there was a happy-medium and there is. I don't like seeing Cykes shoved down everyone's throat just as Wolverine and Storm were. Here's hoping that we can get a solid writer in the vein of either Morrison, Whedon, or Ellis.

No, I don't think being an X-Man makes women crazy...

I think being a woman makes women crazy...  I have a wife and three daughters, so I have some experience in this area...
