Off My Mind: Choosing What to Read in DC's 'The New 52'

With so many 'new' titles, how many issues will you read before deciding which to drop or keep?

We are on the verge of discovering the brand new DC Universe. A lot will be the same but at the same time, we'll be seeing many changes. From the moment the announcement was made about the relaunch, readers formed an immediate opinion. Many are on board and excited while others have voiced disdain over what appears to be a reboot.

No Caption Provided

DC has been adamant that this isn't a reboot. Despite this, it's clear that some characters are getting fresh starts while other appear to be picking up where this months titles leave off.

Once the #1 issues start rolling out, a decision has to be made. 52 first issues is a lot for most readers. They'll want to continue reading the stories with their favorite characters but some of the changes might be enough to turn them off. This is also the perfect time to start reading the characters that they never read before. Once a new series is picked up, how long will it take to determine the commitment to the series? These are just some of the factors that need to be considered over the next few months.

== TEASER ==

Regardless of how much complaining people do about changes being made, if they are already invested in a character, they will want to continue reading about them. One big change we know of is the end of Superman and Lois Lane's marriage. I've mentioned before how ending their marriage won't really matter. They can still get back together. This might seem like a step backwards but the relationship between Superman, Lois and Clark was always more interesting before the marriage happened. After they said "I do," most writers took their relationship for granted. There was very little interaction and most stories could have been written the same if they were just dating.

No Caption Provided

Lois has been seen with a new boyfriend. Does that mean Clark is going to be moping around because she's not available? We don't know yet. I've always enjoyed Superman comics but the fact that Grant Morrison is writing one and George Perez the other, I am completely sold on both titles.

No Caption Provided

Other characters getting apparent changes are Roy Harper and his missing arm, Starfire with her origin and costume, Superboy's origin, Green Arrow and Nightwing becoming a few years younger than they currently are, Barbara Gordon apparently walking as Batgirl and the history of the Teen Titans. Are these changes necessary? Probably not. Will they completely change the characters? It's possible.

There are changes that have me concerned but I can't make my buying decision based on a couple images and few sentences in the solicitations. I'd like to be optimistic that any changes have been thoroughly thought out. I can't see the editors or DC willing to take an unnecessary risk in changing a character for the wrong reasons.

In other words, you can't rule out or even fully commit to these new titles until you read them. Sinestro as Green Lantern seems so wrong. He's not worthy of being one and has been great as a villain to the Corps and as a leader of the Sinestro Corps. But there is that curiosity of how will he and other characters deal with it.

Not all of the relaunch titles will be successes. We've seen several comics from different publishers get canceled after low sales. Money talks. If the new direction a title takes isn't successful or accepted, it won't stand a chance of continuing. There are also the characters that are missing from all the issue information. Books will get canceled and other ones featuring these missing characters will likely take their place.

There are some series I'm unsure of. Without reading, it's hard to make a firm decision. It's always a drag in skipping out on a new series only to find out after several issues have gone by that it's a great read. We all love to start a series at issue #1. Some new issues might not have the strongest start. The creative team might need a couple issues to really find their groove. How many issues is enough to give a new series a chance? Three issues? Six issues? One story arc? There really isn't an easy answer. But with 52 new series, most of us can't commit to that many titles especially when we know we'll be seeing more new series in the coming months and there are also books from other publishers to consider.

No Caption Provided

The best way to decide is to first stick with the characters you love. Don't let the possibility of changes scare you away. Characters have gone through major changes numerous times over the years. They will still be true to their roots even if some tweaks have been made.

No Caption Provided

Consider characters that might be new to you but you've always had an interest in. Don't know a lot about Deathstroke? Pick up his book. Never read a Swamp Thing comic in your life? Why not start now? It's hard to take risks if your comic buying budget has restrictions. It would just be wise to take advantage of these jumping on points rather than continue to miss out on stories with great characters.

Pick up books by your favorite writers. If you've never cared for Wonder Woman but dig what Brian Azzarello does, you'd better pick up Wonder Woman #1. If you've loved Scott Snyder's Detective Comics or American Vampire, how could you not consider Batman or Swamp Thing? Even if some changes like Barbara Gordon going back to being Batgirl and being able to walk sounds crazy, think about who's writing. Gail Simone knows Barbara Gordon. You know she will write the hell out of that book and make the new change work.

The hard part, at least for me, will be deciding when a book or direction isn't working. I have a tremendous sense of loyalty to my favorite characters. But with so many titles, I will be drawing a hard line when I decide I'm not thrilled with a comic. Unless I am absolutely appalled, I will stick through the first arc and probably the first issue of the second arc. If by that point I'm not convinced, the title will be removed from my pull list. If a book isn't worth it, not buying the issue will speak volumes to DC. A drop of sales will catch their attention rather than just complain.

The New 52 is happening. It's time to fasten your seat belts. Get the popcorn ready. This a big moment for DC. Everything is going to change yet be extremely familiar. I have some fears and doubts but I honestly can't remember the last time I've been this excited. Now it's up to the creators to make sure they do a top notch job otherwise it will be time to say goodbye.

I think that's a great point because personally I get 20+ series already from Marvel and other publishers such as Dark Horse and IDW. I wonder with some of these pull lists people are posting whether they will get anything outside of DC.

Well the Green Lantern titles I will definitely be getting, even thought Sinestro as a GL is so wrong to me.  But since Hal is still GL over in Justice League I'm sure that won't last.  And yes I'll be getting Justice League and Justice League Dark (even if the title makes it sound like Justice League should also be available in caramel and nouget).

Wonder Woman will be a definite as will as Firestorm.  I might get Flash as well, and Aquaman since I like Geoff Johns's writing.  The rest I'm not too sold on.  I could care less about Supes being single, and in fact kind of like it better that way, but I don't like everything else I've been hearing in interviews about plans for him, and I never have collected the Bat books and won't be starting now.

Since these are first issues, I'm basing most of it on characters I want to follow, then I'll judge by writing and art after the ball starts rolling a bit... I was really caught of guard and disappointed I dropped Wonder Woman after the "Odyssey" story so soon without giving it a chance, so I might not drop a title as quickly unless its just awful in terms of how characters are portrayed and changed and what not.

I'm excited! I've got my pull list down at the comic shop and I'm ready to go. I filled the list with my favorite characters and threw in some new ones that caught my attention. I'll probably pick up a few off the rack that aren't on my list like Swamp Thing and JLA Dark. These are the new 52 titles in my pull-list for Sept:

  1. Batman
  2. Detectinve Comics
  3. Batwoman
  4. Nightwing
  5. Superman
  6. Action Comics
  7. The Flash
  8. Green Lantern
  9. Justice League
  10. Grifter
  11. Captain Atom
  12. Blue Beetle

I'll also be paying attention to what other people are reading to see if I'm missing out on a really good book.

"In other words, you can't rule out or even fully commit to these new titles until you read them."

I totally agree with this line.

I'm getting all 52 #1s. I'll keep buying Marvel in trades.
I'd like to correct G-Man on a few things:
Starfire's origin seems to remain the same. They'll just put more emphasis on how it affects her. She'll still have been prisoner of the Psions who experimented on her.
Superboy's origin will also stay the same. He'll still be the half-human, half-Kryptonian hybrid that appeared after the Death of Superman (still canon). His Young Justice and Teen Titan history will be removed though.
The Nightwing, Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, Beast Boy, Flash Titans will still have existed. Geoff mentions that he'll explain how it can still work.  The new52 Teen Titans won't be the first iteration.
Sinestro already was a Green Lantern before due to a Emerald Dawn retcon. The ring doesn't chose due to "goodness". It's based on will. There will be bad apples on the Corps just like any police force.

i really can't afford anything else with my already large Dc pull list, the only others i get are the Dark Horse Buffy the vampire slayer series, and IDW's Angel

That's cool. Always good to have some diversity. I'm not judging anyone btw. If people only want to get DC (or any publisher) that's fine also.

I am totally curious about this revamp...I'm not saying excited because it's too early to judge this 52 new books like G-Man said
I (as a huge Batman - fan) am happy that DC doesn't change much in Batman's continuity but Barbara as Batgirl is a heavy change...I'm afraid of losing Stephanie and Cassandra but we'll see what DC has in store for the Batgirl(s)

When it comes to the JLA book I think it is a good decision to make a new start... it's totally normal for characters to evolve in their own comic books or it's understandable when a story arc changes the status quo of a series like Superman, Batman, GL or whatever but when it comes to cross - over situations like in the JLA things become difficult to overlook because dramatic events in the JLA books always meant drastic changes in nearly every comic book...

So I think it's good to revamp or reboot (whatever you call it) the crossover stories to make things easier to follow but I'm not sure yet if I agree with all changes that follow in the other comic books...

*sigh* you see? As I said, change crossover comics change everything it's the same with the revamp...It NEVER ends...

Also does anyone know what is happening to titles like Batman Beyond and Xombie, they are both good but no one is saying what will happen

Anyway this is what I am gettting
Static

I'm actually verrrry excited for this and I'll at least give the titles I'm going to pull three issues to impress me, usually after that I'll hang it up if I'm not taken with the story.
My ideas about what I'll pick up:
Justice League Dark- the only way this title could sound any better to me is if Ragman was on the team.
Green Lantern- Interested to see how the Sinestro switch plays out, I think he's a strong enough character to support his own title.
Red Lanterns- Milligan writing Atrocitus(spelling?) say no more I'm there.
Action Comics- Never been a Superman fan but I'm interested to see what Morrison does here.
Captain Atom- Wasn't sure about this one but after reading the article on it I think I'll have to give it a shot.
Animal Man- Still drooling over that cover.
Fury of Firestorm- I think this is the title I'm actually looking forward to the most.
All-Star Western- I don't really know what to expect from this one having never read Hex.
I'm also throwing around the idea of trying out Hawkman and Suicide Squad but I'm really trying to keep it under eight titles.....ok ok maybe ten haha.

I just wish there was a Doctor Fate title...I love doctor fate in all his/her incarnations.

Gonna pick up Batgirl and I'll give Gail 1 storyline to convince me.

I will keep an ear to what Supergirl fans say and I might pick up the trades later.

My titles I'm getting are Justice League, Justice League International, Action Comics, Superboy, Supergirl, Superman, and Red Lanterns.  I figure I'll start out small and if I hear more good things I might get more, even if budget-wise its probably best just to keep it this way now.  I'm ready for the new 52 now. Bring it on!

As negative as I have been on the 52, G-Man is right that the 52 will make the universe accessible.  Accessible is the key since not everyone feels comfortable just jumping into the DCU.  As much as I wanted to jump off after the 52, which I still might.  My girlfriend wants to check them out, the beguiling is offering a pre-order deal of all 52 issues for $104 CAD, tax in.  So @ $2 an issue I might read all 52 with her and decide to up off accordingly.

G-Man is right that investment is what ties me to the DCU, I've hearted the DCU longer then Marvel since Alan Moore became my favorite writer.  Even if I am hating the DCU John Constantine, John Constantine is the reason I love comics in the first place.  So I must invest in the JLD even if I fear it will not hold up to Hellblazer, Shade the changing man, MX and all the other Vertigo book series that had to die for it to happen. But again I trust Peter Milligan and he ranks third in my books at as the top writer in comics.

Just worried about inevitable Justice League delays since Jim Lee's working on the title...might have to get the first issue just to satisfy my hunger and then wait for the trade.

@cagedleo730: by different I meant that Starfire will be new to Earth. What does that mean about her past relationship with Dick? I also saw that the Teen Titans are meeting for the first time. Does that mean this group of Teen Titans or the Teen Titans in general? And Superboy is not created at Cadmus, etc. This sort of stuff is what I was talking about. The little details.

I'm going to take a look at Justice League, I, Vampire, Teen Titans, Red Hood, Supergirl and Wonder Woman, but they will not be given more than 1 issue to convince me. But hey, I currently don't read any DC comics, so that's already a win for them, right? :)

I follow creators. Then I choose which character said creator's working on that interest me most I.E. Snyder with Batman/Swamp Thing. If the first issue's good and draws me in I'll give it an arc. If it goes downhill during that arc I'll drop it. Same approach I take with comics in general, folk.

I'm planning on getting the following:
Batman- I loved Scott Snyder's run on Detective and can't wait to see what he does with the real Batman.
Batman and Robin- I liked Tomasi's previous 3 issue arc on Batman and Robin and am willing to give this title a shot.
Nightwing- Nightwing has always been one of my favorite characters. I've always loved how they matured Dick Grayson from Robin into being a more independent hero (though he'll always be a part of the Bat-family).
Batgirl- I would have rather them brought Cassandra Cain back as Batgirl, but I like Barbara Gordon and have read that Simone does the best Babs stories, so I'm going to give this title a shot.
Teen Titans- I'm going to pick up this title mostly because it is the only one right now featuring Red Robin (which, as with Nightwing, I love how they matured Tim Drake into being a more independent hero). I also liked a lot of the X-Men stories that Scott Lobdell did in the 90s, and I am holding out hope that they re-introduce Raven into this title at some point.
Green Lantern- I love what I have read of Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run, which I've been reading the trades of trying to catch up (the last one I read was Agent Orange).
GL: New Guardians- Kyle Rayner has always been my favorite GL.
Justice League and Justice League International- I love a good team book. Hopefully one or both of these will prove to be just that.
Then that will leave just enough room in my budget to still collect The Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Force, and Daredevil, the only Marvel books that I care about at the moment.

@G-Man:  The thing is that Scott Lobdell has explained away those ideas. The solicit blurbs are saying one thing and the books actual writer is saying another. Like the whole Wonder Girl is a "belligerent" thief. Lobdell said that she won't be a Gambit like thief, but she did take some gifts from the gods. NOWHERE is not engineering Superboy, they kidnapped him and are trying to re-engineer him. I doubt that Starfire will be new to Earth. With the deaging she will be newer but not new.

I posted this list on this thread here: http://www.comicvine.com/dc-comics/57-10/dcs-new-52-which-titles-will-you-be-buying/92-625298/?page=2

Might as well post it again now that this is a main-page topic.

Definitely buying:

Action Comics- Grant Morrison and Superman means this will probably be my favorite monthly.
Superman- My dedication to reading Superman means that I have to. I like George Perez's art, but not his plots.
Batman, Inc.- Whenever it finishes up/comes back. There's a chance I'll drop Batman after Morrison is done.
Justice League Dark- Peter Milligan's writing Shade again!
Animal Man- Jeff Lemire should make this book freaky again.
Stormwatch- Paul Cornell. Check. The Authority. Check. Martian Manhunter. Check and sold.

Maybe:

Justice League- I'm definitely picking up the first issue, but I'm suffering from serious Geoff Johns overload like everyone else.
Superboy and Supergirl- I'm trying to be less of a slave to the Superman family, but if these books start well then I might get dragged back in.
Batman- I like Snyder alright but I have to seriously ask myself how deep I want to get into the Batman family.
Batwoman- Great character and I love J.H. Williams III, but do I have the $$$?
Red Lanterns- Peter Milligan is the only reason I'm even considering this. It's association with the Green Lantern books makes it a hard sell, though.
Swamp Thing- The real question is, will any run of this book survive Alan Moore's memory?
Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.- I know this'll be weird in a way I like, but I'm not a big monster fan.
Demon Knights- Paul Cornell and Medieval adventures are hard to pass up, but, like I said $$$.

Odds are, one or two of my maybe books will become definites. If anyone can help convince me to pick up a book or not even consider it than let me know why. My wallet and I could use the help.

At this point. I think my maybe decision is between Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, and Superboy. Regardless, I'm very excited that Morrison is getting to do his version of Superman and I'm hopeful that this is the fresh start DC's superhero line needed.

The ones I certainly want are Batman, Batwoman, Batwing and Suicide Squad. Those I imagine barring me hating them (very unlikely) I will continue with those.

There are also the ones I'm a bit so-so about; Justice League Dark, Nightwing, Detective Comics, Jason Hood and the Outlaws, All-Star Western.

I personally think the best time to drop a title is after the current story arc or the first issue (if you really don't like it). That way in the future if people want a copy of said story arc, you've got it. ;)

Buddy, add your sentiments to my blog on the relaunch. You're on the money for some of those ideas.

I won't pick up any of these. I'm just going to wait and see what happens. If they're a success, fine. If they flop, I'll just laugh and laugh and laugh, then be apologetic, and then submit ideas for a salvage of the comics industry.  I barely buy modern comics anyway. In the meantime, I'll be picking up Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters; Kirby: Genesis; Larry Hama's continuance of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero; Simon Furman's continuance of Transformers (starting with #81); and the new Ghostbusters series.

Psyched to see alot of people picking up Superman! Lets hope it doesn't disappoint. I absolutely cannot wait to see all the discussions after we get to read our 52! I will be getting about 40 of the titles to see how they do and am looking forward to all of your thoughts on the titles I haven't picked up to determine which I will go back and buy!

I've been in then out then in and as of right now, I'm for sure getting Batman and AllStar Western. Might get a few other Bat-books and maybe JLA and Animal Man but even then I dunno. I don't care if Gail is writing and Amanda Connor is drawing, I'm not getting Batgirl out of respect for Steph as Batgirl. I think this will turn out to be a jumping off point for me more than anything. But we will see when the day eventually comes.

I've always been a Bat-fan, so I'm planning on getting Dectective Comics, Batman, Nightwing, and Batgirl for sure, along with the Justice League. Catwoman and Batman and Robin I'll test for a little while to see if I like what's going on, but sadly I can't afford any more Bat titles.

As for new titles, I can't really afford to venture out a lot since I'm on a tight budget as a college student, but I really like the new look and direction Wonder Woman and am curious to see where Jonns takes Aquaman, which is kind of awesome because I've never been interested in either of those characters before and have never bought a comic where they are the sole stars. I will also pick up JLI just to see where it leads. Besides those though, I really don't have the money for any more.....

You know I am glad Nightwing is coming back and there a few unique titles coming out like Red Hood and the Outlaws. Interesting to see what they do there and I love the fact that both Static and Blue Beetle get there comics back and come back to life in beetle's life. My problem is there is so much out there that is strange, we might not know what to get at first. Mister terrific/Red Lanterns are two comics which are odd. Never liked the red lanterns and don't really know much about Terrific except when he came onto the Green Arrow comics at the start of this year. Well like it or not we are interested on how they are going to do this.

I'm really looking forward to the new story lines. I read a lot of fanfiction as well so I enjoy the alternate storylines. I know a lot of fanboys are really against the new stories, but we really need to give these stories a chance. I am sure there will be a few that we say WTF were they thinking, but I am pretty sure there will be a few we will consider to be golden. I like the fact that I can actually read some series that start at the beginning and not just jumping into the middle of something without knowing the back stories. I will definitely read Wonder Woman, Superman, Supergirl, Superboy, Batman, the Justice League, Catwoman, and Batgirl. Honestly, I will read whatever I can get my hands on. LOL!!!

Come September, I am going full digital day and date. Here are the comics I'm getting the moment they come out:

Action Comics
All Star Western
Animal Man
Aquaman
Batgirl
Batman
Batman and Robin
Blue Beetle
Captain Atom
Catwoman
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
Grifter
Justice League
Justice League Dark
Justice League International
Mister Terrific
Nightwing
Stormwatch
Superboy
Supergirl
Superman
Swamp Thing
The Flash
The Fury of Firestorm
The Savage Hawkman
Voodoo
Wonder Woman

Everything else I'm open to getting when they drop to 1.99 after.

Beyond the DCU, other comics I'm getting include American Vampire and Ron Marz's Top Cow stuff.

I've dropped Marvel since May 2011 when I found out that the 3.99 comics can now go as low as 20 pages. Also, Fear Itself has been underwhelming and I am no longer buying into the Marvel hype machine. I will GLADLY pick up Marvel again when they drop their Avengers books to 2.99, go digital day-and-date, and ease up on the vicious cycle of event-aftermath-event.

I will mostly just read the Young Justice titles. DC's young heroes are nearly always superior to the older ones.

Well the cancelled the only DC book I currently get, Power Girl, but I'm going to pick up at least a few of the more second- and third-tier ones (although not all that army/vampire stuff)  just to help those comics keep their financial feet for a bit before they get cancelled...probably Mr. Terrific, the one with Martian Manhunter, maybe Blue Beetle.  And I'm curious about Batgirl.

I'm gonna pick up a few titles but I'm still not sure this will get the result DC wants...
