Off My Mind: Can Superman Defeat Doomsday Once Again?

Will the Reign of Doomsday result in the Death of all the SUPER-characters?

No Caption Provided
When Doomsday first arrived on Earth, things didn't go too well for Superman. Doomsday is programed with a hatred for Kryptonians due to his roots. He was the product of Kryptonian engineering and was subjected to test after test in trying to create a way to adapt to any danger. As Doomsday experienced death after death and was cloned time and time again, he retained a memory of everything that happened in his genetic code. As each clone became stronger, he gained the ability to adapt to his environment. It only made sense that when he and Superman died as a result of their epic first encounter he would find a way to return.

And Doomsday has returned a several times actually. After his last death, he was seen in the hands of General Sam Lane, who was determined to improve Doomsday. When he recently encountered Steel, Doomsday was clearly different.

If Superman barely defeated Doomsday before and it ended up costing him his life, how could he possibly defeat him now?
   == TEASER ==

Going back to Doomsday's fight with Steel, I thought it was odd that this major battle was going down in Metropolis and Superman was no where to be seen. He has been busy doing his walk across America in trying to find himself and establish a connection with civilians. Regardless, word would've made it to Superman and he could've been there in moments. Because it cost Superman his life in defeating Doomsday before, it's going to take more than his super-smack down to put a stop to him. If Doomsday can evolve, Superman's strength won't really matter to him.

No Caption Provided
The Doomsday seen fighting Steel could evolve at an alarming rate. He recognized who Steel was and even used the tactic of threatening innocents to draw Steel towards him for another blow. Doomsday could develop body armor and somehow gained the ability to fly. With Steel out of the way, Doomsday will be setting his sites on the Eradicator in the pages of The Outsiders #37, Cyborg Superman in Justice League of America #55 and Superboy in issue #6. Why is he targeting these individuals from Reign of the Supermen? Also where and why did Doomsday take Steel's body after beating him?

When Superman finally faces Doomsday in Action Comics #900, he's going to need some help and a really good plan. It's safe to say that we won't be seeing the Death of Superman once again but there's no way Superman can take him out on his own. How do you stop an unstoppable force with immense strength and new powers developing during battles? The idea of sending Doomsday to the Phantom Zone crossed my mind but what would that mean for the Kryptonian criminals (along with Chris Kent and Mon-El)? Superman already tried banishing Doomsday to the end of time and that didn't work.

No Caption Provided
Even though General Lane is gone, if the current evolution of Doomsday is due to the government agency that gained possession of his corpse, I can't imagine they wouldn't have some sort of kill switch installed. With the way Doomsday suddenly appeared to take on Steel, it makes more sense that he was released rather than escaped from some sort of lab or prison. It's going to be up to Superman to figure out how to activate this kill switch otherwise his return to the pages of Action Comics is going to be very short lived.

A fantastic idea would be a DC/Marvel crossover to handle this but of course that wouldn't happen. Superman is affected by magic which could also be a key to Doomsday's undoing. Science seems to have no permanent effect on the monster so Steel should skip those areas.

Superman using Black Lantern ring to end him, or Batman with a green lantern ring. Or the universe will change again. Would be much more fun if they killed Superman and left him dead.
Nope, it would be fun if Silver Age Superman came back and killed Doomsday with just one finger.

@AskaniSon295:  If they can have two Daxamites be Green Lanterns (Sodam Yat and Mon-El) then yes, i would not mind at all seeing a Blue Lantern Superman. Plus, if there isn't a GL ring around, they can still own up on their own.

The way i see it. in terms of the justice league im sure after the very first encounter with doomsday that there would be some sort of counter measure placed on the earth either by Batman after the loss of superman or something by superman himself after knowing exactly what to expect from the monster.

There is ways to defeat him without killing him.

I think that Superman and Doomsday should have another mighty smackdown. I don't know, but I

would like to read about Superman's thoughts as he faces Doomsday again. Is he scared? Does

he have the confidence to take  on a beast that killed him the first time? Or perhaps, is he angry, at

Doomsday, or himself, for dying at this seemingly retarded beast's hands? Lex Luthor, with all his

his genius and mania couldn't kill Superman, but this Kryptonian ape can, and did!? I think that

alone could fuel Superman. I think  it would be an interesting opportunity for further character study

on the greatest super-hero of all time.

I bet superman and all the other people from the reign of the superman storyline will band together to defeat doomsday or something like that. I doubt they will go through the whole death of superman thing again.

@Axdemon: Exactly. There are some things in comics where we just HAVE to suspend belief in order to enjoy it. If Krypton was that advanced back then, hell 90% of the population should have survived. So Superman beating Doomsday will be a given, also Steel and whoever else Supes saves will be there to help.

I agree, i hope he gets back to his strengths that he was at prior. It does become a problem of killing him if he keeps losing ways to be killed but giving him intelligence (specially the inelligence or General Ross) he could easily become more. He could become a red lantern, a yellow lantern, he could take over War World with Mongul out of the picture. There is alot of room open for him now. I would like to see him tkae Mongul's place on War World and start his own yellow lantern Corps like Mongul, but mix the yellow and red lanterns together. He is probably the only being in the universe that has more rage then Atrocitus

A few things WW never defeated a stronger clone of DD, she was getting a whooping alongside Hercules, untill the clone "evolved" into a harmless statue that she shattered. When she met the real DD in Doomsday wars, she got steamrolled alongside the JLA, and in the 2nd meeting they had in there with DD only Orion and J'onn had the guts to go at him again despite both having been oneshot before, J'onn twice, WW was nowhere to be seen to show she learned her lesson.

The green blood is not K otherwise there would be a lot of Kryptonians in pain over there, ppl are confusing with All-American Boy that was a soldier that was genetically modified with Doomsday DNA and had his bones turned into K.

Also Lex messed up with the Original Doomsday that died in OWaW at Imperiex hands after he steamrolled alongside Superman many of the Imperiex probes, Lex spliced his skeleton that was the only thing that remained with Superman's DNA that made him intelligent, weaker and susceptible to K, later he lost his inteligence after Gog and DD avoided that Superman died in the future at Gog's hands.

What the military did to him is unknown, he seems to be back to his H/P days where he was evolving on the fly, but he still took some time to deal with Steel, H/P would simply had his head punched off in the 1st seconds, this however might be because Steel needed to last for story purposes.

If he steamrolls Hank and Eradicator the same way I'd say he's back to his H/P days, and if it is superman sure as hell won't want to come near of him, and he's gonna have nightmares like he did in H/P of DD coming out of his closet lol

Honestly i hope DD gets back to his teambuster lvls, I loved him back there and hated what DC done to him after OWaW.

I hate the idea of Doomsday.

"He is very powerful and when you kill him, sure, he will die. HOWEVER, he will come back STRONGER and you won't be able to kill him the same way again because he adapts to death!"

I know this is a comic book character, but that seems like the lazy way to bring a character back. I liked the Justice League Unlimited version of defeating Doomsday where Alternate Universe Superman lobotomized him. Of course, in pure comic book fashion, instead of making sure Doomsday stayed dead and was never able to recover, they allowed Doomsday to recover from the lobotomy while in a isolation chamber (seriously, destroy the brain or something).

Thank you for straightening that out. I forgot that was All-American Boy. I do remember from the beginning they said that Doomsday is like 98% solid mass. I dont remember ever hearing that he was brought up on a ship, i thought he was totally created (Starting his existence) during the beginning of the planet Kryptons creation when it was a hostile and vilent enviroment with monsters and stuff. His creator is Bertron. His page says Doomsday was a test tube infant on Krypton.

one of his evolutionary abilities stated on his page -
  • Kryptonite Immunity- Doomsday had a weakness to Kryptonite due to his Kryptonian origin, but he overcame that weakness after exposure.

Doomsday is not a Kryptonian ( he was created on Krypton but he was not born there, he was brought up in a spaceship along with Bertron and others ) and he doesn't have Kryptonite in his blood. Its just an artist's stupidity. Doomsday doesn't have blood at all and you are mixing up with All-American-Boy, who is not Doomsday, just a soldier with his DNA and a kryptonite injection.

" Well if I remember right, Wonder Woman took on an enhanced version of Doomsday, although I'm sure not on this level, and won by using the Gauntlets of Atlas which multiplied her power ten fold.   I don't see why that wouldn't work for Superman, but if he can't use the gauntlets, then maybe some help from a gauntlet wielding Wonder Woman would be useful. Then again, I haven't been keeping up with her story, but from what I gather, she isn't the same Wonder Woman at the moment. In any case,  I believe the gauntlets are still at the museum Wonder Girl's mom works at.   Just a thought... "

I like Doomsday, I like the idea of this character and loved the original Death of Superman/Reign of Supermen/Return of Superman/Doomsday Wars stories.
And I'm kinda glad they're bringing him back, so people could try writing a story around the monster instead of putting him in one (thus how easily defeated he was in those last couple of years).

The fact that he's evolving all the time now and already can fly will make him quite an interesting match against Supes. They better have a super clever ending in mind and not be improvising on the go.
At least it got Superman out of his walking nonsense from JMS storyline...

They released this at NY Comic con to which, the NY audience appropriately gave a null reaction. Doomsday much like Bane was used as a gimmick. There's very little substance to how these characters were used outside of pornography of gimmicks such as Death of Superman & Knightfall (until Gail Simone rescued Bane).

Doomsday was not only beaten/killed during Infinite Crisis but also New Krpyton...how many more times do we go back to this well for a one note brute?

There's so much more compelling things to be said about the fall out of New Krpyton. Wouldn't such a threat start an arms race of unprecedented level? I also can't buy ALL of the renegade Kryptonians were taken out.

Anyone wonder what Superman thinks about Chris? Oh wait, he's walking the earth like Cain from Kung-Fu without much of a reason except at some point he'll be a like Forrest Gump and go home.

I never thought he had green blood because he was Kryptonian.  Superman has red blood and is Kryptonian, so the first point is debunked I believe.  However, your second point about how Doomsday could have green blood because he has Kryptonite running through his veins seems to me right on the money.  Personally I never put too much thought into it.  I mean I understood it was his blood being that when he was hurt/cut it came out, however, as I said, I did not put too much thought into it seeing as how he is an alien and often aliens are portrayed with green blood (example: Predator).
