Off My Mind: Better X-Men Movie Villain, Sinister or Shaw?

Who would you rather see as the villain?

Speculation has been running on what villain Kevin Bacon will play in X-Men: First Class. The leading candidates are Mr. Sinister and Sebastian Shaw. Rather than speculate further on who Bacon will play, I started thinking on which character would be a better movie villain.

Of the two, I would say Mr. Sinister is a cooler character. He has been behind the scenes messing with the X-Men since Cyclops was a kid. He's responsible for creating a clone of Jean Grey. He even orchestrated the Mutant Massacre. And of course there's his ties to Gambit.

Sebastian Shaw is no slouch in terms of being an X-villain. As the "leader" of the Hellfire Club, Shaw has made his mark not only among mutants world but is also a leader in the business world. Shaw played a major role in turning Jean Grey into the Dark Phoenix and despite his downfalls, he always manages to land on his feet, ready for his next scheme.

Since we're talking about a live-action movie, I think the choice is obvious. Shaw would make the better villain. While Sinister would be cool, he would most likely come across as a complete cornball, not only with his appearance but with his crazy genetic experiments. Shaw opens the door to having a credible mutant threat. He is basically a mutant version of Norman Osborn but without all the insanity.

I would love to see Mr. Sinister but I feel if he were to be the villain, he would have to be completely rewritten. His character would have to evolve into something different that would probably bring a tear to the eyes of comic readers. We should find out soon who Kevin Bacon will actually play in the movie. Whether or not it's Sinister, Shaw or someone completely different, I say Sebastian Shaw would be a great X-Men movie villain.
