Off My Mind: Are Vampires Invading All Our Comics?

Looks like they're everywhere these days.

Like them or hate them, Vampires are everywhere. Yesterday in the Comic Vine office, the topic of Vampires came up. We know they're making plans to attack the X-Men. Are they going to be invading DC Comics as well?

Looking at the solicitations for DC with fear, we discovered there was a tiny bit of vampirism creeping into DC Comics. In Batgirl #14 (seen to the right), Batgirl and Supergirl have to become vampire hunters. Batman Confidential #48 continues its recent "Batman Vs. the Undead" with Superman joining in on the fun. There's a book coming called Ides of Blood from Wildstorm (set in 44 B.C). And of course there's American Vampire and I, Zombie.

Is this just a taste of what we can expect? Are we going to see more and more vampires in our comics?
 == TEASER ==
Marvel also has the Anita Blake comics and vampires will pop up in Ultimate Comics Avengers 3 ("Vampire X"?). It's not just Marvel and DC that have vampire fever. We saw a vampire of sorts in Image Comics' Chew and there are some in Turf. Obviously there's vampires running around in Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Dark Horse and Angel at IDW. In August, Boom! Studios will also begin Dracula: The Company Of Monsters co-written by Kurt Busiek. Don't think that Top Cow is innocent since they've been publishing the Impaler series. We've also seen vampires in the past in 30 Days of Night and Hellboy,

Why is there such a fascination with vampires? They're on TV (True Blood, Vampire Diaries) and in movies (you know which one I'm talking about). Whenever we post about vampires here, it seems people are slightly disgusted. Who is it that is obsessed with vampires and is making it so they appear in every medium we have?

It looks like Marvel might be taking a big step by making fan-fav. Jubilee turn into a vampire. Will we see more actual heroes turn into vampires? (I joked with Babs that Bruce Wayne would have to turn into a vampire and be "undead" in order to prevent the big disaster Superman, Rip Hunter, Booster Gold and Hal Jordan are trying to prevent in The Return Of Bruce Wayne). We definitely need Blade to do some cross-company crossovers and start weeding down the number of vampires popping up everywhere. They're starting to become a...pain in the neck.

I think the real question is are teenage blondes invading my dc comics?

Vampires in entertainemnt have been steadily increaseing for ages now. Started with lots of films and tv with buffy in the 90s, just got more and more hype and momentum with underworld twilight true blood etc so media its utterly saturated with it now days. 90% of it hasnt be that great either comics are just now going crazy with it since they had there zombie phase and vampires are current flavour of the times.

Posted by NightFang

The more vampires the better but I don't won't them to go overboard with vamps because people will get sick of them really fast.

Posted by doordoor123

I think since Vampires are everywhere in the media these days, its giving writers a current creative flow. Its giving writers good ideas. They just happen to be with vampires. I actually dont think comic vampires are that bad, but ANY television or movie vampires haunt me.

Posted by dondasch

Vampires across all forms of media have increased tremendously since the '90s.  In honesty, I hope that DC doesn't hop onto the vampire bandwagon and keeps churning out great ideas such as Blackest Night, War of the Supermen and Brightest Day.  There's no need for DC to have to copy the House of Gimmicks or be influenced by them.

Actually i think vampires in comics were more common in the 70's.

They need more strong vampires like mandrakk, and seriously that whole vampire thing needs to be darker

Oooo great, original idea DC.

You know as long as they are the actual vampires and not those Twilight sparkling fairy wanna be Vampire's I am cool with their being vampires in comics also as long as they dont make them corney and actually make them deadly.

I...like vampires... o.O

But not this excessively and not those that sparkle in sunlight either...but i'd be lying if i said those movies didn't entertain me at all >.<

Still...the X-Men/Vampire thing intrigues me, but if they start showing up left and right...I think I'd have an issue with it. But for now....bring 'em on.

I'm so sick of Vampires. They are so overdone and almost never done well.Zombies are the same way.How many depictions can you see before it just gets corny? What's next..Werewolves?

The only Vampire I like is Angel from Buffy...the rest of these weak-@$$ Vamps need to go back ta Hell

Once upon a time, vampires were fun, sexy & cool.  A girl with long blonde hair & unfeasibly high-heeled boots would run around & slay them.  Huzzah!  But that was so long ago...

Over the last few years I've grown sick to death of vampires.  It was made worse when Twilight became the 'next big thing'.  I understand how a show like True Blood is so popular, but at the same time I'm so sick to death of vampires that it puts me off watching it.

There were silly amounts of TV shows & movies being made with vampires in, but it was okay because they didn't invade my comics.  The closest I got to vampires, was with the witty vampire movie homage covers that Clayton Crain did for Necrosha.

But now... vampires are everywhere!  They're invading my comics.  I just want them OUT!  Poor so much Ultra Violent light on 'em, and drive wooden stakes through all their hearts!

I know that when Star Wars first came out, that all comics began to scramble to emulate the popular space sci-fi elements (which is how we ended up with the Phoenix Saga).  But that was over 30 years ago when there wasn't much originality.  These days I expect more.  Higher standards of quality in both story telling & plots.  I also expect originality.  Marvel have proved that they are no longer the House of Ideas since they can't come up with any ideas of their own :p

Don't forget... They made a comic a few years back in which Batman became a vampire.  I tried to read it, but thought it was uninteresting and dull.

I'd be alright if they just put vampires on the cover.

Those two covers in your story look awesome!

Hey, as long as the next arc or story isn't about werewolves....

Then it would be a conspiracy.

I never found zombies interesting and got really tired of seeing them everywhere in comics. Now there are Vampires everywhere and it's getting old too. I dug Morbius, Blade and Dracula, and the new American Vampire series is pretty cool. I'm getting tired of seeing them. It's become the new throw away character, like henchmen. If you make one strong central Vampire, I'd be cool with that. Someone like Max Schreck's Nosferatu or Bela Lugosi's Dracula or even like True blood's Eric Northman. But it seems like they just want to use a bunch of low level, uninteresting story lines. I just don't want to see this done to Werewolves or Frankenstein.

NO!!! no more freakin vampiers
Posted by goldenkey

They're invading everything not just comics.
Posted by etragedy

I'm so sick of zombies - they're everywhere. Even the news post before this one.
I'm so sick of them that I'm O.K. with vampires taking center stage again for awhile.

Well vampires beats zombies

I don't think its a question of "are there too many Vampire stories?" but a question of "are there too many crap Vampire stories?" The answer? It's tough to say. The final arch of Captain Britain and MI:13 was a superb vampire tale in superhero comics and Dracula was handled expertly by Paul Cornell. What needs to happen with Vampires is for them to stop being a generic/silly/emo/sappy/sh!t villain type and go back to being something truly scary/otherworldly. Blade has been fighting vampires for years and thats all good. The over saturation of media with vampires needs to lead to something new and interesting. If that doesn't happen then it's been a waste of time.

Oh and it needs not to be a Fan fiction Twilight type piece of shite either.

As long as the vampires don't sparkle or are named Blade I don't mind reading a comic with them in it.

Posted by A-Strondinaire

Yes this is getting out of hand and vampires bore me anyway yeah yeah you want to feast well get in line. It's just a marketing ploy to get tweeners and women to reach into something new you know like an amazon recommendation like hey everyone if you liked twilight check out these trades of story arcs from marvel, DC, and other comics. I don't get it they have vampires with the whole buffy comic why can't they get their fix there instead of putting off fans. I also heard that this X-Men Storyline will last until January well heres to living under a rock with the new X-Men vol. Shame i'd bought it too.

I never found vampires all that interesting, so I'm well and truly sick off them.

Batman Bloodstorm was an awesome, awesome book.  Absolutely one of the top reads from the Elseworlds line

Hey G-Man you're talking about Daybreakers right?   : P

Are Vampires Invading All Our Comics? To answer that honestly I'd have to say NO.

Is mainstream media trying to cash in on what they consider to be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with Vampires- HELL YES!
Are they wrong to do so- probably not. In the end its all about the MONEY!!!!
Is Twilight a financial success?  How about the Vampire Diaries on the CW network? Where the Underworld Movies successful? True Blood the most popular show on HBO? Did Buffy and Angel help hold a struggling TV network together a little longer? Will The Gates on ABC premiering on June 20th be a TV rating draw? YES (unfortunately IMO), Yes, Yes, Hell Yes, Yes and I like the show myself, Yes and I don't know.
If the consumer is willing to pay then Vampires will continue to Play and Play BIG! At least until the Werewolves on True Blood become the next "HOT" thing!

So Sayeth I!

I don't see a problem when an original series revolves around vampires like American Vampire or a title that revolves around the supernatural has vampires (Hellboy) but when comics like the X-Men which in general have nothing to do with vampires begin incorporating them to join the fad...that is when I bury my face in my hands and have a good sob for what is happening to the industry when they're reduced to that well of ideas

It's just a fad, last year it was Zombies in the 60's it was taking acid. it will past.

yes! I will totally second that

That movie you are talking about between the parenthesis... that's why people are slightly disgusted!
I honestly don't mind it... but like Wolverine and Deadpool appearing on every book I will get tired of it.

Maybe this means we'll see less Deadpool? Unless a vampire Deadpool from an alternate dimension shows up.

LOL. Great article, G-Man. I completely agree, however, I think Marvel might actually be doing pretty well with their Vampire stuff

I like this idea, vampires are cool, no matter how much people hate: Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries etc ...

So you cant blame Marvel and DC for wanting to profit on the idea.

I love a lot of Vampire stories, more in novel, TV, and movie format though. In comics they never make them powerful enough and mixing them with Super Heroes is stupid. Vampire's are mainly scary when they are near invincible, but characters like Superman make them look like insects. So unless they are going to make them uber or have varying classes where (preferably) older vampires or ones that feed on "certain things" (like feeding on a person with powers or abilities should give the vampire aspects of that ability since they are in-taking that person's blood, making their genes a direct part of the vampire's body) are more powerful than others, so we can have over-powered 2000 year old vampires fighting Superman, and like the younger ones taking on lower tier heroes. If they don't do something along these lines then I suggest NO vampires in comics.

On a side note though, I think Batman becoming a vampire would be pretty badass, it defeats the original character and what made him so appealing (fact that he has no super powers) but it would be a good way to make him compete with Superman or Wonder Woman more evenly. Also he usually patrols at night and I mean come on, the Bat Cave! But to save the face of original Batman, make it temporary or an alternate universe, or make it Bruce Wayne and let Dick Grayson remain as the current Batman. I would love to see Batman with Super Powers, but with a dark and Gothic type of powers (hm, enter vampirism).
