Off My Mind: Are Vampires Invading All Our Comics?
by Tony 'G-Man' Guerrero on
Looks like they're everywhere these days.
Looking at the solicitations for DC with fear, we discovered there was a tiny bit of vampirism creeping into DC Comics. In Batgirl #14 (seen to the right), Batgirl and Supergirl have to become vampire hunters. Batman Confidential #48 continues its recent "Batman Vs. the Undead" with Superman joining in on the fun. There's a book coming called Ides of Blood from Wildstorm (set in 44 B.C). And of course there's American Vampire and I, Zombie.
Is this just a taste of what we can expect? Are we going to see more and more vampires in our comics?

Marvel also has the Anita Blake comics and vampires will pop up in Ultimate Comics Avengers 3 ("Vampire X"?). It's not just Marvel and DC that have vampire fever. We saw a vampire of sorts in Image Comics' Chew and there are some in Turf. Obviously there's vampires running around in Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Dark Horse and Angel at IDW. In August, Boom! Studios will also begin Dracula: The Company Of Monsters co-written by Kurt Busiek. Don't think that Top Cow is innocent since they've been publishing the Impaler series. We've also seen vampires in the past in 30 Days of Night and Hellboy,
Why is there such a fascination with vampires? They're on TV (True Blood, Vampire Diaries) and in movies (you know which one I'm talking about). Whenever we post about vampires here, it seems people are slightly disgusted. Who is it that is obsessed with vampires and is making it so they appear in every medium we have?
It looks like Marvel might be taking a big step by making fan-fav. Jubilee turn into a vampire. Will we see more actual heroes turn into vampires? (I joked with Babs that Bruce Wayne would have to turn into a vampire and be "undead" in order to prevent the big disaster Superman, Rip Hunter, Booster Gold and Hal Jordan are trying to prevent in The Return Of Bruce Wayne). We definitely need Blade to do some cross-company crossovers and start weeding down the number of vampires popping up everywhere. They're starting to become a...pain in the neck.
