Off My Mind: 'Action Comics' Vs. 'Superman'—Which is More Essential?

There are two Superman comics with different feels; which is the one for you?

In DC's 'The New 52,' we have two different Superman comics, 'Superman' and 'Action Comics.' Besides a different title, the Superman inside each has a distinct feel. Taking place in two different time periods, the books have a clear difference in tone and direction.

With so many new DC titles, many readers have asked how they can keep up with each book. Some have even asked if it's necessary to read both Superman titles. In the past, the different Superman titles told similar stories only with different villains each month. Based on the first issues, we get the immediate impression that readers will be able to choose one over the other depending on what flavor Superman they prefer.

No Caption Provided

We've already seen the changes Superman has gone through in Action Comics #1. Because that series takes place in an earlier time period, there's obviously more changes that will occur in between the two series. The two titles may eventually end up on the same page but looking at both titles, is it essential to read both titles at the same time.

== TEASER ==

In the 80s, there used to be four different Superman titles. One came out each week and the story from one continued into the next. Each cover had a number telling you the reading order in case you missed out on one. That's obviously not the case with 'Superman' and 'Action Comics,' since 'Action' takes place in Superman's early days.

'Action Comics'

This isn't quite Superboy but it has that younger/brasher feel to it. We're seeing Superman in his beginnings. He's not brand new to the game because the people of Metropolis know who he is. He isn't as powerful as we're used to seeing him. He leaps over tall buildings instead of flying over them.

As he gets used to his powers or they slowly build up, we're going to see a Superman that has to do a little more thinking. He won't be able to just fly in and carry the bad guy away. In the first issue he's going up against the brilliant mind of Lex Luthor. The experienced Superman can simply fly around at super-speed or use his strength to defeat his enemies. Seeing this Superman learn to deal with the dangers around him will be interesting.

He also has a bit of an attitude which gives him more of a human feel. A common complaint has been that Superman often comes across as unfeeling. As Clark, he is supposed to be more human than other characters. But when Superman is portrayed as all-powerful, he can get a little...boring.

This Superman also jumps into the action. It's almost as if he's seeking out the trouble rather than sit around and wait for the cries for help. It's a fine line he'll be treading as he would have to be careful to not become a judge, jury and executioner. This Superman is more spontaneous. You're not sure what he's going to do. He's willing to take it on but not quite ready to. And that's not going to stop him.

'Superman'

No Caption Provided

The current Superman is closer to what we've seen recently. He has his powers but feels like he's suffered some sort of loss. Superman was the people's hero but here, you get the impression he is keeping to himself. Whether it's the changes at the Daily Planet or friendship/relationship with Lois Lane, he feels a little distant.

Along with distance, it was mentioned that he wasn't around Metropolis for some time. We don't know exactly how long or what he was up to. This also adds to the feeling that something has driven him away. Most likely it wasn't a Justice League threat because he's always managed to serve the League and still watch over his city.

What should be the case in this title is the opportunity for Superman to go up against his bigger villains. Because of Superman's great powers, writers always had to give him huge threats. Since he has less power in 'Action Comics,' we probably won't see him face a Doomsday-level villain anytime soon.

Superman might have pulled back from Metropolis and his strong sense of being there for the city but this title is more likely to give us something closer to the Superman we've been reading the last few decades.

Which is More Essential?

No Caption Provided

This is the tough part. The big question is what kind of Superman do you want? It might be unfair to make a drastic decision based off of one single issue but with the vast number of titles that come out each week, sometimes one issue is all a reader is willing to give.

No Caption Provided

'Action Comics' feels like it has more heart. This is a Superman learning to be a hero. He won't do things perfectly but he has the enthusiasm to jump right into the action. Being at a lower power level, he won't be able to take on the big villains. He also won't have run ins or team-ups with other heroes since we saw his first encounter with Batman and Green Lantern in Justice League #1.

'Superman' will have a more familiar Superman. He's in his new suit and is at full strength. We will see more of his presence and connection to the rest of the DC Universe. There is more of a chance for guest appearances from other heroes if that's something you want to see outside of Justice League.

When I first saw the covers and solicits to these first issues, I thought I would prefer 'Superman' over 'Action.' It turned out my liking was the opposite of what I expected. Of course I'm going to continue to read them both but based off of one single issue, I'm far more interested in 'Action Comics.'

Superman fans should be reading both. We'll have to see if 'Action' stays in the past or eventually catches up to the current time. It could also be fun to see what connections the two books could have, assuming there will be a lot of coordination in both titles. For example, something first seen in 'Action' could return in 'Superman' with different results. I like the idea of seeing Superman in two different stages. 'Action Comics' has won me over and I expected more from 'Superman.' Hopefully my first impression of 'Superman' will be proven to be premature and next issue will knock my socks off. There is room for two Superman comics. I just want them both to be...super.

I'm not a fan of Morrison and definitely not happy with what he's said in recent interviews about his plans for Action Comics. He's basically taken away everything that made him connected to humanity and has turned him into an arrogant, human-tossing machine. I've only read the first issue, but it just feels like Morrison has stripped Superman of his Clark Kent side and made him a bit cold, which is not the Superman I know and love. I don't want my head bitten off, so I think I'll just leave it at that.

@G-Man: I'm so glad you posted this... I just started reading many of the DC series including Action comics and Superman and I was wondering why, in one series he has a normal costume and can fly, and in the other he looks like a dork and can't fly... So, it's an earlier time... Thank you!

@ltbrd: In the Silver Age he would vibrate his face when in public to make sure none of the pictures of him came out clearly. Its only been since the '86 reboot that he hasn't cared about who seems him or takes a picture and so we grew up with a very publicly open Superman. But in a world of facial and voice recognition programs that idea doesn't make alot of sense. If one of DC's objectives was bringing things down to Earth a bit then this was a good way to start.

THIS is something I've been thinking about quite a bit... It's been bothering me, not just regarding Superman but all super heroes with a secret identity. With the Man of Steel however, considering his disguise comes down to his glasses, a suit, and his acting ability, it is difficult to accept that no one could figure his identity.

Facial recognition applications are no longer things of science fiction; they EXIST. So, who, in the DC universe, wouldn't take a picture of Super Man and run it through one of these programs...

Even Spider-Man. Even with his costume on, it would be easy enough to get his physical dimensions such as height, weight, etc... And enough of him has been seen that people know he's white and has brown hair... I think a facial recognition application would have a chance of matching him as well...

But with Superman's face being right out there in the open, it's hard to believe that it would not eventually be matched up to Clark Kent's face... So... What's up with that?

No doubt for me: ACTION COMICS!

In fact I've been a bit disappointed with Superman after reading Action Comics ... I had much higher expectations.

Same with Batman after reading Detective Comics ... but Batman is better than Superman compared to DC/AC.

Detective Comics and Action Comics, together with Justice League of America, are for sure the 3 best #1 of the new 52. Highest quality which I really hope to see continued.

I liked Superman. I think that it had some important information on the Daily Planet.

I haven't read Action Comics, because I wasn't sure if I should, but I'm thinking I should find it and read it.

In Grant Morrison's Action, I'm half expecting Superman to grab some floozie by the arm and yell: "I know you killed Jack Kennedy!"

This is not a bad thing! Morrison looks as if he's delving deep into the early, early, EARLY days of Superman, while at the same time, paying homage to Kal-L, the Superman of Earth-2. OR, could it be that DC is integrating BOTH the Earth-1 and Earth-2 Supermen ("Supermans"?? I don't know...) into one editorially consistent character? I hope it's the latter!

This will make Superman vastly more interesting. The Golden Age Superman (as well as much of the Silver Age Supes) has no sense of continuity. Giving Superman this continuity and history opens up a whole wide world of possibilities and storylines. It makes Clark/Supes interesting in much the same way those "before" and "after" pics get you interested in the Nordic-Track-- you want to see how the character got from "there" to "here", and how the decisions of a younger Supes affects the judgment of the "more powerful" Superman, whose powers are complemented by experience.

Still, If I were to pick one, my choice would be "Superman", but I can't see myself doing without either one!

Honestly you NEED ACTION COMICS due to the writing and you kind of want to see how he becomes the Man of Steel that we see in Superman

Superman book will be The New Adeventures of Lois and Clark and less about Big Blue, but again it is the first issue so we really dont know what will happen in the first year or so. But the action was told mostly through Clark Kent narrative and cuts back and forth between Lois Lane and her new role.

I think if we want the pure high octane, action based Superman it will have to be seen in JUSTICE LEAGUE, between JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, SUPERGIRL and the last few pages of Justice League, I think we will get better samples of what he can DO as Superman and Action Comics would be about WHO he is and how he interacts with Metropolis

@MisterParker: I think your choice is easy when you look at the the creative teams. "Batman and Robin" is written by a longtime DC editor who has no business writing comics in 2011, and drawn by a forgettable journeyman. No thanks.

"Batman: Dark Knight" has a fantastic artist... who can't write his way out of a paper bag. And can't make deadlines either. Nope.

"Detective Comics" is similar in that it has a great artist who has no business writing for himself. No.

"Batman" has Scott freakin' Snyder. who just came off an epic, grim noir arc in Detective. And the art is by Greg Capullo, who consistently delivered detailed, stylish art in "Spawn" for YEARS without ever missing a single deadline. BUY IT NOW.

If you can afford it, get Batwoman as well, because J.H. Williams III is an artistic genius who can actually competently script for himself.

Urgh, could sure use a similar comparison like this with 'Batman and Robin', 'Batman: Dark Knight' and just plain 'Batman'! It's a real pain deciding which title I should follow...or if anyone else could suggest one of them I'd be mighty grateful :)

Action. Hands down.

And as far as I'm concerned, DC has made it clear that Action is the more important comic. It was released in the first full week, while Superman anchored the last. Grant Morrison is one of DC's most high-profile writers. And the variant covers they've gotten out of Jim Lee and Ethan Van Sciver so far have been nothing short of heavenly (which is good, because the regular ones have been a bit lackluster).

I've always valued the creators over the characters. So I love Morrison's Action Comics while Perez's Superman seems boring and dated. The "Superman" series may take place in current DC continuity, but who cares? It's all fiction, so the only thing that matters is whether you are entertained. What is "essential" right now, may be ret-conned in a couple years. I care about reading a good yarn. "Action" delivers that, "Superman" isn't.

I really loved them both. You get two really solid stories at two very different points in his life. I think both are essential to understanding who he character is in this new universe. And I'm just glad that I've got two books with Superman that I can actually look forward to every month.

As a new DC reader, Action Comics was far and away the better comic. I never had any interest in Superman as he's been: perfect and flawless. I really liked the way he was portrayed in Action Comics. Superman was still pretty good, but I just really liked his personality better in Action.

AC for me by miles!! The writing in SM#1 was bad,, I wish mr morrison did both!! Hope SM#2 is better cos I'm gonna wait for reviews this time,, also supes is a quite a bit below current power levels in SM#1 as he's still young so really the story's could be made more interesting, saying that if GM was writing supes I wouldn't worry about power levels a good writer will come up with a great story ala AS Superman!

One of the best of the 52, IMHO. Crazy that there's such a contrast between the two, even though they depict the same character!

If I had to choose, I'd favour Action Comics over Superman. AC avoids one problem most Superman writers likely encounter on a semi-regular basis - he's nigh-invulnerable and has super-everything. Superman circa DCnU Action Comics still certainly falls under the super-strong and similar attributes one would give current era Superman.. just not dialed up to 11. And that's got to make it easier to write for without involving kryptonite constantly.

@sesquipedalophobe: AGREED! you just nailed what ive been tryna convey for yeaars. it doesnt matter how strong a hero is, they survive regardless. all that matters is how good there character is and how they overcome certain obstacles or villains...same works for villains. but yaa this is why i say action comics pisses all over superman! haha

I just wonder how long it'll take them to go back to his original costume. Some things are just sacred in my mind, and Supes costume I always count as one of them. In the 70+ years the S-man has been around, his costume has remained very consistent throughout- sure the S-shield has gone through different iterations, but the costume hasn't seen much change since the original Action Comics.

I waited months for Superman. It was different, but basically the Smallville (show) Superman defeating the villain in the most pacificistic manner possible, but it was fairly typical. I expected something more. Maybe it was the writing, maybe the art. I didn't feel it. I especially didn't enjoy the short lionized panels of his face and fists shooting toward the city's suspect demise. If the city were in peril, who cares? It's his story I'm reading, not a foretold man's triumphs over a threat of some ubiquitous metropolis. Like I said, I felt nothing. Where was the umph?

Action Comics Superman felt so vibrant, like almost a person at odds with the world. His biggest threat wasn't the bullet train colliding with a predictable force, but the continual threats from the world. Everyday threats. It was more raw, like back to his roots. I don't care how powerful he is (he will survive regardless) or how much pressure there is, he is written to be like the everyman rather than of the overman. Isn't this what the revamp was meant for?
