Off My Mind: A Guardian Becomes A...Green Lantern?

Good idea or asking for trouble?

Blackest Night is almost over. With Brightest Day, hopefully the Green Lantern Corps will be able to take things a little easier. Although after the events of Blackest Night #7 and the rise a new White Lantern, who's to say whether the hard times are over? With this certain individual possessing the power of a White Lantern, things can go either way. This could be a new beginning or just a continuation of the crazy dark times we've been seeing.

It appears vacation leave may not be granted just yet for the Green Lantern Corps. They will be getting a new member. Who will be the latest to wield a Green Lantern power ring?

No Caption Provided
That's right, one of the busiest Guardians we know appears to be taking a more active role in the Corps. In Green Lantern Corps #48, the Green Lantern Corps Honor Guard will "expand" to include Ganthet along with John Stewart.

I have to admit the idea of a Guardian being a Lantern is pretty cool, but what's the real story? Is this a step down for him? What will this mean for the Corps? Who will be "leading" things? While Ganthet is an old and experienced dude, he doesn't quite have the field experience that other members of the Corps might have. Is he going to assume leadership or will he obediently take orders from Kyle Rayner (or even Guy, if he gets his rage in check)?

It sounds like a cool idea and seeing Ganthet with a ring gets you wondering if he'll unlock even more secrets of the ring for the Corps. As I write this in the early hours of the morning, before the sun even rises, I can't help but wonder if this will be a bad thing. Should the Guardians take on an active role like this? More so, can the Guardians be trusted? In Blackest Night #7, a certain individual really called them on the fact that they've been keeping secrets supposedly for the benefit of the Universe. Clearly they've made mistakes but still feel they are justified in all that they do. While Ganthet has been more level-headed than other Guardians, I just can't help but smell trouble brewing over the horizon.

Green Lantern Corps #48 will be on sale May 26, written by Tony Bedard with art by Ardian Syaf. What are your thoughts? Ganthet as a Lantern, good idea or bad?

I agree. He's one of the only other Guardians that has any emotion and he see's things from the crops point of veiw. This makes sense to me.

No, you're right. Every time it's been brought up before it's been alluded that the Guardians possess power above and beyond that available to Green Lanterns and are not hindered by the normal limitations. I remember a scene with a Guardian backing down Darkseid when he informs him of this. "
An that's the thing, I mean once he used the ring to tap back into the Green he should have been gravy. I can understand Geoff's need to remove the Guardians from the board, especially Ganthet who he had stand up to Parallax way back n Rebirth. So using an emotional outburst/reason for him to take the ring and limit himself is ok. Especially since when he does it we get to see him cut loose and effortlessly destroy all those BL's while tapping into the other rings. The prob comes when even though Geoff has him tap into the Blue for a Guardian style blast while still wielding the ring as well....we're supposed to buy that while Ganthet is the one Guardian the Corps trust...they'd and he would have him step down and be a GL instead of lead. That's retarded. I mean even in the current crisis, Ganthet and Sayd (mostly Ganthet) is doing allot more guidance than Hal or Sinestro. A powerful Immortal Guardian who knows how to trust their guts...or another ring-slinger...which one's more useful?

Then you've missed a couple of things. While the helix blast is their basic offensive use of the power, you'll notice in SCW they do and can make Constructs.  Like the hand Guardian 8 used to catch Scar after the AM was through with her. An if you notice while he has the ring, most of Ganthet's use of the Green has been from himself and used the Helix Energy pattern to create his constructs, like when he helped Hal w/ the stake, as opposed to when he does use the ring like he did to assault Nekron. (An i notice his energy blasts are larger than the other's...)

He's a flippin' guardian!!! Why on earth would he need a ring?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'd be better if he'd stay a free lance guardian or something other than a green lantern... and that tunic he's wearing looks stupid... maybe if he had gone back to the red and green suit he wore back when kyle was GL, he would look  better.

I think it's just a Geoff Johns loose end, he's not willing to take care of... there are 7200 GLs in the universe from which to choose and shine a spotlght on the book... why make Ganthet a new one?!

oh and did i mention he's a guardian and DOESN'T need a ring!

and where's the ION entity, trapped in daxam's sun ?!

I haven't picked up a few books last month,  Did this happen in Blackest Night or Gl or GL Corps?  If so it's something intertesting to happen in Brightest Day.  Another side story along with that one guy flying around as the Entity.  I want to see where that leads since someone ruined it for me and told me about it before I read it.

I think more than anything, aside from the awesome Tony Bedard getting a chance at a big book, Ganthet is why I'm picking the book up. It's a different idea. I have a feeling that Ganthet will want to right the wrongs of his peers (GOTU) and it, as you said, has a chance at revealing a lot of other things.

That's what I ask... is the Blue Lanterns going to be null and void after this point.. I'm pretty sure that Agent Orange isn't going to give up Sayd...

Idk what to think of this... seems like a really odd move to me. Why would a Guardian even need a ring??
But then again, I'm not all caught up in BN yet so can't really formulate an opinion yet.

Are you assuming Ganthet doesn't have the experience? cause his age and the fact that he's a guardian kind of insinuates that he was the chief of police, not the mayor of ring town.

I say all the Guardians should have power rings and Ganthet becomes "chairman", making him the leader of the Corps.

I believe its more like the orange lanterns corp leader, the less rings, the more power, two batteries are powering up his ring, he might wield the mightiest green lantern ring since future Sodom yat
