NYCC 2013: New QUANTUM & WOODY Mini-series With a Big Twist

Christopher Priest & M.D. Bright return to work on the Q2 mini-series for Valiant Comics.

There's been quite a bit of news that's come out of New York Comic Con this past weekend. One piece of news that no one could have called came from the Valiant Comics camp at their panel this afternoon. They announced that Quantum & Woody would have their own mini-series, but the creative team would be the surprising part:

Valiant is proud to announce that Christopher Priest and M.D. Bright, the acclaimed creators of Quantum and Woody, will reunite for Q2: The Return of Quantum and Woody – an all-new, five-issue mini-series bringing the original world's worst superhero team into the 21st century!

The original creators of QUANTUM & WOODY are returning. What makes this mini-series really special is that it won't take place in the rebooted Valiant continuity. It takes place in the universe where the Acclaim series left off. Here's the info they gave the fans at the panel:

Whatever happened to the world's worst superhero team? Twenty years past their prime, the unlikely crime-fighting duo known as Quantum and Woody have long since parted ways and retired…until a middle-aged Quantum suddenly reappears with a brand-new teenage partner—and his wisecracking ex-best friend gets mad. Now Woody is out to break up the all-new, all-different Quantum and Woody and put an end to Quantum's recklessness and child endangerment…just as Quantum sets out to bring down a shadowy, globe-spanning agency of freelance spies and assassins. As Quantum's plan crumbles right through Woody's fingers, will the former friends set aside their differences…and their age…and their numerous health difficulties…to join forces one last time without driving each other crazy?

Sounds like a pretty interesting and cool take on these characters and going back to the old Valiant (Acclaim) series. On top of the announcement, here's some opening, penciled pages of this upcoming series.

Q2: THE RETURN OF QUANTUM AND WOODY will hit comic book retailers in 2014. What do you think of this idea? Will you be picking this mini-series up? Let us know below!

So this isn't canonical to the new Valiant universe at all? That's an interesting decision... O_o (Eyebrow is officially raised.)

Priest is back!? The only reason I even picked up Quantum and Woody in the first place is because I knew it was his creation. Turns out James Asmus is making that one of the best books currently being printed, but I had no idea to expect that.

I'll absolutely be picking this up. Hopefully it's new reader friendly. I assume it would have to be, since I can't imagine the avid fans of the original series make up a very large market share. I also hope this is the first of many new comics projects for Priest.

I wonder how James Asmus feels about this...

Woody seems a lot buffer as a kid than he is in the new series.

Weird news and new mini-series!

Well... what's not weird about Quantum & Woody?

Is this the only thing Valiant announced?

I'm hoping for an update on the Ninjak teaser that was in their FCBD special.

@xwraith unfortunately that Ninjak teaser didn't mean a new Ninjak series (yet!). It ws more of a clue towards Unity in which Ninjak will feature.

The art for this looks so fresh! I'll probably get this in trade.

Could be fun, I'd probably wait for the trade, though.

I absolutely LOVED old QnW so this idea is splendid for Valiant to do! Bring it on, and let other publishing companies take notice I say...
