NYCC 2013: IRON PATRIOT, AVENGERS WORLD, and Trial of Jean Grey

A few big announcements for two new series and one new story line featuring some well known

Remember all those Marvel teasers? Well, quite a few of them were revealed today at New York Comic Con.. The first on this list is the new on-going series IRON PATRIOT by writer Ales Kot (ZERO, CHANGE) and Garry Brown (THE MASSIVE). Here's a look at the cover from interior artist Garry Brown.

Colonel James Rhodes returns again to the Iron Patriot suit after Norman Osborn tarnished it. He'll be defending the United States from domestic bad guys and otherworldly elements. Issue #1 hits shelves in March of 2014.

Also, there's a new series coming called AVENGERS WORLD with a stacked creative team working on it. Nick Spencer (MORNING GLORIES) and Jonathan Hickman (AVENGERS) will be writing, and the art will be supplied by Stefano Caselli (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN). Here's the cover from issue #1 by John Cassaday.

This sister title to the main AVENGERS will focus on newer characters added to the roster and further the stories happening in the main title. This book will feature the traditional Avengers character but will also focus on characters like Hyperion, Smasher, and newer Avengers like Cannonball, Sunspot, and Shang-Chi. This series will begin in January, 2014.

Lastly, after Battle of the Atom is complete, there's a new X-Men-related story line coming your way, and this one ties into the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY series. "The Trial of Jean Grey" will weave back and forth between GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ALL NEW X-MEN. Brian Michael Bendis will be writing both books and Sara Pichelli will be doing the art on GUARDIANS and Stuart Immonen will be drawing ALL NEW X-MEN for this storyline.

It seems as though the original X-Men are still kicking around present-day, especially Jean Grey. This has alerted all of the Marvel Universe, since the terrifying Phoenix Force had manifested itself within Jean, numerous times. It seems as though the Guardians of the Galaxy will end up being involved because of this.

What do you guys think of all this news? What are you most looking forward to?

Oh man, everyday there is another reason why I am glad that I dropped All-New X-Men when I did. That book is just a straight up money pit.

As for the Iron Patriot series, if that's what it takes to get Rhodey his own book again so be it. But, what does it mean he returns to the armor? Did I miss something? Probably won't be picking it up though, too much Marvel as it is. Maybe if it happens to be a monthly book at $2.99.

Iron Patriot? Yes!

And I am VERY interested in that All New Xmen book. But who is it centered on? Gotg or Xmen? Because it looks like the X-men,but that they look like alternate duplicates or something....whatever. I'll wait and see.

I think it means that the guise is used again after Norman Osborn put a dent in the name when he used it (when it was first used, as well).

I think that it will be monthly. I might also get that Avengers world thing.

Scrap--there go future uses of the "War Machine" trademark. Thanks a bunch, Marvel!!! On the X-side of things: Schism was a complete joke. In the words of Jay Sherman, "It STINKS!"

He's been Iron patriot for awhile now, Rhodey took the armor during the most recent run of Secret Avengers.

I know that, but it says for the first time. I am not really sure why....maybe it means officially

Then don't get the book. I am pretty sure this is a brand new phase in Marvel NOW!. It's like DC having another phase in their comics line-up and NOT having a JL book. It's kind of odd and kind of silly not to have them in a new phase :p

I am confused.....the original five are still here?

Interesting.....

Posted by RUKM

@cameron83: Yeah I'm glad they reference Norman Osborne rather then just sweep that under the rug. It'll be a good read no doubt

Edited by Jimmie_Hudson_

why isn't all new x-factor getting more attention?

Can I just say that I am looking forward to most,if not,all of those books?

Mainly the Black Widow one.

Do we need ANOTHER Avengers book?

Posted by Trevel8182

@cameron83: Why because you like overdesigned, generic, Mass Effect ripoff armor that takes all interesting iconography from the characters and that's impossible to draw or sketch unless your a professional trained artist.

Posted by turel_hash_ak_gik

glad to see ghost rider is coming back from limbo. loki: agent of asgard sounds interesting. the rest: i could care less.

Posted by turel_hash_ak_gik

@themanintheshoe: avengers world, avengers undercover and secret avengers is coming back.

Posted by Mucklefluga

Avengers World

Pros: Best creative team ever

Cons: ties in with Avengers and New Avengers.

Posted by Mezmero

I honestly don't remember what teaser corresponds with which new series. And look at the size of Angela's...belt.

Posted by TerryBogard2014

@cameron83: Oh I can assure you.I wont be getting that book considering its just a tie in book to the main book by their description.and im pretty sure there aren't like 9 JL books, there's jl,jldark, and jla which is being cancelled for jl canada, meanwhile there's, avengers, new avengers, secret avengers, avengers arena, mighty avengers,Uncanny avengers,Avengers A.I,avengers assemble, young avengers, and yep,the original 5 are apparently from this announcement are gonna sticking around after battle of the atom.

Looking forward to Trial of Jean Grey, love the X-Books and Guardians!

Loki book is intriguing, what was that with Baron Zemo, a new masters book or something?

Edited by LordRequiem

So Rhodes has the Iron Man 2.0 armour, and he's going back to Iron Patriot armour which seems like a massive downgrade to me. Can someone please explain? Unless the armour is in fact more advanced.

Edited by dondave

Yeah, I'm going to pick them all up although, why did they make Loki older?

Posted by Z3RO180

Avengers world and Loki are probely the ones I'm looking forward too

Jean looks awful as a redhead of asian decent.

Some interesting titels nice to see black widow in her own book.

Edited by CaptainHoopla

I couldn't care any less about the new team titles. They are all just the filler before the next crossover event. If the events end up worth reading, I'll read the collected trade.

I am interested in Black Widow and Iron Patriot especially with Kot writing it. Having said that, I really wish Marvel would give me an Iron Man book worth reading first though.

Edited by Mutant God

Tarnished it? Norman created it he should be Iron Patriot and James should be War Machine!

All of these look fun, although I don't know if another Avengers title is necessary: they're cutting the main Avengers book from twice a month to once to fit in Avengers world. I'd rather they made the team smaller and concentrated on one book.

Not really feeling the X-brats' costumes, but that will be negligible if the story flies.

Posted by BritishMonkey

Why they're carrying on Rhodey as Iron Patriot I don't know. It was a joke in Iron Man 3 and other than pandering to the movie what's the point?

Edited by sparty-dbq

50 bucks says Iron Patriot only lasts a year just like the last two attempts. Sorry, but Rhodey just can't carry his own book. Same goes for the new Ghost Rider series announced as well. "A brand new character takes up the mantle of the Spirit of Vengeance." Yeah, because that worked SO well with the last book.

Edited by MadeinBangladesh

Happy I'm not buying a single Avengers book. Saves a whole lotta cash

Edited by greenlucario

Well I guess I can ignore the Iron Patriot thing to support a new book with Rhodey as lead. But a new Ghost Rider series with another new Rider? No freaking thanks! Want Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider and Rhodey as War Machine is that too much to ask?

The only reason I'll check out Avengers World is because I love Hickman's work on everything and the creative team is bomb.

If it fails to give me anything as different to the other two books as they are to each other, I'll drop it. All-New X-Factor's cover is fantastic. Black Widow only ever interests me as a guest. I liked her as written by Liu. Surfer is one of my fav characters ever, but I'm just not sure about the direction Slott's gonna take him.

The best news out of all of this is THAT HAZMAT SURVIVES AVENGERS ARENAAA!!! The bad news is that her costume is ass.

Wait,JL canada is a serious thing?

New Avengers isn't even an Avengers book, though. It's just a name,it's really the Illuminati. Avengers Arena is just...awful.

Overdesigned? Generic ripoffs?

Okay.

Sure,it's not like it's my personal preference or something, and I can assure you that I like Gamora's current costume FAR more than that skimpy space outfit she used to wear (although I still like the last one).

But no,silly me for liking something different than what you like. How dare I?!

And I like Peter's current costume also. And I would call these costumes the opposite of generic and "overdesigned",whatever the f*ck that means.

There's basically no difference in Drax and Rocket, and I don't even see anything wrong in Groot.

But hey,it's not like this is a matter of opinion.

You act as if they all wear the same thing as if they are cops.

Also....Mass Effect? Really?

So what would you call the old costumes? Star Trek rip-offs?

This doesn't even look like Mass Effect, but Mass Effect sure does have unique designs that haven't been done before......right...

And "impossible to draw or sketch unless you're a trained artist"....WTF DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING?!?!?!

Simply because someone can't draw it they should change the costumes?!?! WTF?!

Oh,and btw,I am sure that their old costumes scream of unique:

Not that I don't like their old uniforms,but.......

Posted by Trevel8182

@cameron83:

1.There not space Avengers there space Howling Commandos so they should being wearing uniforms or at least matching colors.

2.At least Gamora's old costume was staying true to her character now she looks like some generic sci-fi grunt the same could be said for all the costume, refreshing the old costume but staying true to the original design and the what all costume had in common where the character would add unique piece like Star-Lords helmet, Drax just wearing the pants, Groot wearing shorts or Mantis wearing her skirt, another thing I loved about the last costumes where how people wore them In one scene Peter wouldn't be wearing his gloves or be wearing his jacket around his waist they could be casual wear that also reinforced that they where soldiers in a war and express how the character wear feeling.

3.Overdesigned=Designed to be excessively complicated or to an excessive degree of capability and durability. There are so many tiny intracet little armor pieces all over there body that make it impossible to draw, that last costumes anyone could draw and to me all of the most iconic and long lasting costume should be easy to draw it's like when people say "that's not a good they theme song because you can't hum it."

4.Actually there based on War World 2 German designs so there like Star Wars meets Killzone.

1. But I am not really sure I like them all wearing the same thing. As said,we want their costumes to be unique to the individual.

2. Honest to god,no offense is meant, but I am having slight difficulty understanding what you are saying. So If I say something that seems a bit irrelevant, forgive me. But how was it "true to her character"? Is she a lie now? Is she not a warrior from space? Her old costume was ridiculous in my opinion. I liked the Ultimate Spiderman redesign to it. And there isn't much of a change in Drax,I don't see why Groot would need to wear shorts (he's a fricking tree for Christ's sakes that often times would die in battle) and Mantis isn't even on the team,so....

And one thing you loved was that they wore casual clothing when necessary? But when they are on their ships and such they DO wear casual clothing. They mainly wear their battle gear when they are going into battle. I think that in the next issue we see most everyone wearing casual clothing in the ship.

Also,I wouldn't say that what she is wearing is "generic". For God's sakes, she's wearing armor. It doesn't even look like armor that I would see in other sci-fi stories.

Come on! This is an awesome suit. She's just wearing armor. Not everyone in science fiction space stories wearing armor is ripping off of another person. It's like thinking that anyone in comics wearing armor is ripping off of Iron Man.

I think that her wearing Armor in space where she could get shot would be a bit more...practical and make more sense.

3. You do realize that that's up to the person as to whether it's "too complicated to draw or not". I know that in some images she is drawn with those armor plates, but as shown above,it's not necessary and there isn't much of a difference. I don't see how someone can draw her old costume and not draw the one above. But I don't even see why it's a complaint if someone can't draw it for fan art. If they have trouble drawing it,too bad. Who cares? They're not going to die if they can't copy the image. And I am not sure what that last sentence really means. Does that mean that it's a bad costume because someone can't draw it? Not every costume drawn is created with the thought of others in mind as to whether they can draw it or not.

4. I liked the way they were drawn in Avengers EMH.

Although I miss Phyla.......

Posted by Trevel8182

@cameron83: When I see Gamora I don't Space Barbarian Warriors or Sly Cosmic Rogue or The Most Dangerous Woman in the Galaxy I see a Storm Trooper.

Posted by Trevel8182

@cameron83: Man I really miss Phyla-Vell and Genis-Vell for that matter I hope she comes back soon.
