NYCC 2012: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee on New Superman Title in 2013

Superman is going to get extremely super next year.

When it was first announced that Grant Morrison was leaving ACTION COMICS, the first name that came up in the fan wish list of writers to replace him was Scott Snyder. Snyder has been killing it month after month on BATMAN. Seeing his take on Superman would be something.

Soon a separate rumor surfaced that Snyder would be joined by Jim Lee on a new Superman title. That would be a dream project. And now, it seems the dream is coming true.

At the Superman panel today at New York Comic Con, it was revealed that the two would indeed be teaming up on a new Superman series.

No Caption Provided

This marks the first collaboration between Snyder and Lee. They plan on taking the character to new heights and force him to face off against foes familiar and new.

This is what Jim Lee had to say:

As a huge fan of Scott's writing, I'm looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott's story as it unfolds. Scott's crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!

Here's some words from Scott Snyder:

I've loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It's a dream come true for me on every front. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say it's the Superman story I'd write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It's an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it's a character piece for Clark - it's going to challenge him to his core. And it's definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama - the biggest and most earth shaking action I've ever done.

Somebody pinch me in case I'm dreaming.

To be fair, they have a better creative team on Superman now than they did then, but that was the environment they were in when they made this decision. If they had come to the table and said, "Well damn, we have two pretty good teams that we want to put on Superman. I guess we have to make a new title to accommodate them." Then great. Fine. Take my three bucks (and let's be honest, it'll probably be four.) But now they're doing the same thing they did with Batman during the height of The Dark Knight and Arkham Asylum's popularity. I'm going to buy the book, and it'll probably be terrific. I would like nothing more than to see Superman be successful as a character. It just irks me. Fair enough?

@SmashBrawler And thanks. That's all I'm saying. And with the three teams we'll have on his titles plus the movie, it very well could be.

Yeah, I'm sorry... While I was one of those kids who dressed up as Superman with a towel around his neck, I've never found interest in the character per se. The closest I got to the Superman mythos was Smallville.

Smallville was decent but had little relevance when compared to the actual character. I highly recommend you check out some Superman stuff though!

I kind of hate this. It's like DC's editorial got together and said, "Okay, we have a Superman movie coming out in 2013. Regardless, it will probably do relatively well and we'll probably sell a lot of merchandise and toys. Is there any way we can capitalize any more?" And they came up with this.

Or it could be because 2013 is the 75th anniversary of Superman, Which this article didn't get in to for some reason.

Don't know how I feel about Lee on this. I'm beginning to think that although his art is beautiful, it's more suited towards commissions and covers than he is for interior. Maybe it's just me. He can draw really well, but his faces almost all look the same, the only real differentiation point being if the character is male or female.

Read the first arc on John's Justice League and tell me that Supes and Bruce don't look exactly the same.

A well thought out response. I agree 100%

I am very excited to see Snyders take on Superman, but would rather they just replace the creative team from the current Superman which I am going to drop now. I don't think there is a need for another Superman title.

I've never been a very big Superman fan, so I'm hoping Snyder and Lee can give me something to change my mind.

That sucks for fans of the series. I haven't read it, but I hear it's really good. And in the era of Twilight, we need really good Vampire stories.

Does this mean we'll have something that doesn't involve Luthor being connected to evey facet of Superman's life? Cause if so, then I might be interested.

Why would you drop Superman? Lobdell is perfect for Superman. Hell, most of the plots from RHATO would've been better suited for Superman, and his Zero issue was great.

This is true. I did enjoy the zero issue, and haven't read the annual yet. I will hold on for a Lobdell arc until I make a decision.

To be honest, I dropped RHATO yesterday. I didn't enjoy it anymore....it was getting a little to out there for me. Like all the characters and their interactions, but that was about it.

As for Superman in general...I've just never really enjoyed how he has been written. I love him as a character, but don't enjoy his rogues gallery and have always found his stories too science fiction fantasy for my liking. I keep Action and Superman on my pull list to merely "keep in the loop" of whats going on...but its been a really long time since I've looked forward to reading him each month. Probably not since All-Star superman.

My thoughts anyways.
