NYCC 2012: Scott Snyder and Jim Lee on New Superman Title in 2013

Superman is going to get extremely super next year.

When it was first announced that Grant Morrison was leaving ACTION COMICS, the first name that came up in the fan wish list of writers to replace him was Scott Snyder. Snyder has been killing it month after month on BATMAN. Seeing his take on Superman would be something.

Soon a separate rumor surfaced that Snyder would be joined by Jim Lee on a new Superman title. That would be a dream project. And now, it seems the dream is coming true.

At the Superman panel today at New York Comic Con, it was revealed that the two would indeed be teaming up on a new Superman series.

This marks the first collaboration between Snyder and Lee. They plan on taking the character to new heights and force him to face off against foes familiar and new.

This is what Jim Lee had to say:

As a huge fan of Scott's writing, I'm looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott's story as it unfolds. Scott's crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!

Here's some words from Scott Snyder:

I've loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It's a dream come true for me on every front. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say it's the Superman story I'd write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It's an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it's a character piece for Clark - it's going to challenge him to his core. And it's definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama - the biggest and most earth shaking action I've ever done.

Somebody pinch me in case I'm dreaming.

edit: Though it probably means he's going to drop Swamp thing. Batman, Superman, and American Vampire will likely occupy the of his time.

Oh crap, I have to start reading Action Comics now. You can't beat Snyder, much less Snyder with Lee.

I kind of hate this. It's like DC's editorial got together and said, "Okay, we have a Superman movie coming out in 2013. Regardless, it will probably do relatively well and we'll probably sell a lot of merchandise and toys. Is there any way we can capitalize any more?" And they came up with this.

@ThanosIsMad: American Vampire is ending

This is great news. Hopefully he will be on both Batman and the new Superman title for a long time.

@Kal'smahboi: You think it's a bad think that they put there best artist and best writer on a Superman book?
Posted by Duo_forbidden

Oh, I can actually read another Superman title besides Supergirl. This is fantastic news.

Cool beans.

@Jonny_Anonymous: No, I think it's bad that they're creating a new title to do so. They could have just as easily put them on 'Superman' next year. Instead, they're going to make this into a money grab.
I love Scott Snyder's work and I think he'll do wonders with his story. Jim Lee...has his good days. But this is annoying the heck out of me.

I'm definitely a huge fan of Snyder's writing, and Jim Lee is Jim Lee. However, almost all of Snyder's stuff up until this point has either been straight up horror (American Vampire, Swamp Thing, Severed) or pretty damn close (Batman), which would be a pretty terrible fit for Superman. A Superman horror story could be interesting, but Jim Lee wouldn't be the right person to draw it and it wouldn't be a good fit for a flagship title like this.

I'm definitely looking forward to it, but I'm definitely keeping my expectations in check.

I realize that this series doesn't come out until next year, but I'm gonna go ahead and tell my comic shop to pull it for me. If Scott Snyder wrote the phone book, I'd buy it every month.

cool superman will suck a lot less now

Posted by tbpinkfloyd

I think you mean "Severed," not "Scalped" by Jason Aaron (which is a crime series and worth every penny).

Posted by Kyjeremiah

this is great news, im really excited for this, but wow; batman, swamp thing, american vampire and now this; i hope scott snyder doesn't have a mental breakdown and has to room with the joker at arkham

There are now three (New Superman, Young Justice team with Raven in it, and Justice League of America) that are going to come out in 2013. Does this mean that this is going to be a new wave of DC comics, and that three comics are going to be canceled?

Sounds good. Synder is talented and should do well. Hopefully he doesn't make Superman too emo and lonely.

Posted by ccraft

Im also interested in this, I hope Scott still does Batman!

Posted by thespideyguy

Nobody else cares about what it will be called.

Posted by SmashBrawler

@Kal'smahboi: I can see where you're coming from and, to be honest, I agree. Hell, Man of Steel is definitely the most likely name because of a certain movie. After all, if Batman: The Dark Knight taught us something, is that people will buy the comic that sounds the most like the movie.

Let's hope Lobdell, Rocafort, Diggle and Daniel do a good job as well, and we could have the year Superman became the biggest thing ever again.

anybody else see a skull in that pic in the top right above Superman?

Posted by HushoftheWind

Well i guess getting Ed Brubaker is out the question

This blew my mind away. I'm excited for this book. Love Snyder's Batman, Love Jim Lee's art , this book will be freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by whiteknight67

Can't wait I am so impatient..come on Snyder/Lee Man of Steel

Posted by kagato

I love Snyders work so im really looking forward to this, having Jim Lee on there is going to be great too! DC is really pulling out all the stops to prevent Marvel from stealing the lead
