Nocenti Moves from CATWOMAN to KLARION THE WITCH BOY

Come get all of the details about the new comic!

More change is coming to the The New 52! io9 has revealed that CATWOMAN writer Ann Nocenti is leaving the series to work on KLARION THE WITCH BOY with artist Trevor McCarthy in October. Meanwhile, io9 writer Genevieve Valentine will take over writing duties on CATWOMAN. When asked what makes Klarion special, Nocenti said, "Klarion isn't naturally heroic. He's not out to save the world or rescue anyone. He's a mischievous teenager who has done some bad things, but perhaps there's more to him. So what came to mind was an occult coming-of-age story."

This series will serve as the character's debut in The New 52 universe. Nocenti talked a bit about what genres the book will cover and where the narrative will go. "The Klarion series is a mix of sci-fi, horror and mysticism. Trevor McCarthy is a fabulous artist and he's bringing a wild, inventive style to the book. The new Klarion series explores the dynamic: Is technology saving or destroying the planet?" The writer added that she and McCarthy are creating a new roster of young witches and wizards for the title.

As for CATWOMAN, io9 says Garry Brown will provide the art and Valentine stated Selina Kyle is a character she truly cares about and wants to focus on her moral dilemmas. "She's a character close to my heart; I'm particularly looking forward to examining the nature of what it means to rule – particularly for her, since she's absolutely got what it takes, and it's just a matter of what happens when she reaches a line she knows she can't cross."

Here's some additional artwork io9 provided.

Viners, are you going to check out either title? Share your thoughts below!

Good for Catwoman.

Posted by Cade_Calrayn

Finally. Though yeah, poor Klarion.

@dagmar_merrill:

Indeed

But this tittle will be cancelled after issu8 if isnt good title. Solo Magic Tittles tend cancelled very soon.

Posted by Cade_Calrayn

@vitalius: Well, since Nocenti's Catwoman was crap and wasn't cancelled for 30 issues, I'm not sure that will be true for this.

An i09 writer?

Posted by Squalleon

Maybe Klarion will fit her better. Her last two titles weren't very good.

Kinda Loki: Agent of Asgard, eh?)

How soon will Krarion be canceled? Place your bets! They should relaunch Catwoman like they did with Suicide Squad.

Waiting for the torrent of 'at lasts/finally' to come in.

I don't see Klarion's cat anywhere?

I like Klarion and Trevor McCarthy.

Yeah, doesn't sound interesting at all to me, sorry.

It's a shame she'll be destroying another character in the DCU but at least she's off Catwoman. Now the character can grow again hopefully.

@new_onslaught:

Why they can put a relaunch on Birds of Prey with Gail Simone ?

Catwoman only sold because it was Catwoman who is a popular character and people were buying it just because of the character....my guess is that Klarion will be cancelled after 6 issues and hopefully we won't see Nocenti anywhere else after that

@cade_calrayn:

Catwoman is "member" of Batfamily and sometimes Batman appears and with that the book isnt cancelled at least so soon.

Oh Yeah but also oh no.

Clarion The Witch Boy and we don't have a Shazam title yet? This is a travesty...

Posted by dondave

Still waiting for my Martian Manhunter solo

Posted by Nahuel

Catwoman will be readable again! Might check it in trade now.

Bad luck for Klarion and the artist involved in that book. Man! His designs and style are AWESOME, but he got stuck with Noccenti...

@battle_forum_junkie: I know your pain. This isn't scraping at the bottom of the barrel, this is just being picky with weird personal tastes.

Hmm, interesting character to get a title. At least people will stop complaining that only Batman gets attention at DC. (Who am I kidding? They won't stop complaining).

double edged sword.

positive: DING DONG THE B.... IS DEAD. finally catwoman is free. dont know this new writer but hopefully she will be better.

con: oh poor klarion. not only are you stuck with nocanwriteti they are keeping that blue skin mess. am i the only remember when he was flesh colored? loved him in young justice (the comic) so much wrong with this title. big flop i sense a less then 10 issue run.

@vitalius: better yet: Secret Six. i know they got suicide squad but i would gladly trade the one for the other. and it MUST be the old team, catman, deadshot, scandel, knockout, ragdoll, and either jade or jeanette

@twentyfive: Don't get me wrong, I like that DC is giving lesser known characters a shot, but the fact that they don't stick a to it and try to make these titles work- i.e. Kattana, Demon Knights etc.-makes it a bit tiring

I give it 14 issues tops before it's cancelled...

Catwoman is free!!! I'm surprised they're not relauching the title after all the critical hate it has received under Nocenti's writing.

Klarion seems like an odd choice for a new comic but if she can write it well (I mean she was great at some point right, to be known like that) then this could be another interesting venture in the magic side of DC. I don't know the character too well, I remember him from Young Justice.

@perfect_10:

1- I was talking since there is no word about Birds

2- Maybe to next relaunch. SS will get Deathstroke so you it is going to last some issues.

3- Both Jade and Jeanette or least Cheshire support character

Posted by Twentyfive

@battle_forum_junkie: I agree wholeheartedly. But I think you're being generous when it comes to lifespan of that series. The way DC operates, I'd give it 10 issues tops.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see someone who's typically portrayed as a villain get his own comic. Maybe they'll tone his villany down and show his life with that quirky cast pictured above. Who'm I kidding. This book will try to go for the "wow"s. Oh well. Let's see.

OMG Yes! I'm reading Catwoman again!

Catwoman is part of the Bat-franchise,so that alone will keep her books selling while a unknown nobody like Klarion will be lucky if he isnt cancelled by the time issue2 hits.

& honestly she is DC's second most famous female character after WonderWoman. So, I can see why DC would want to keep her book going for a while until something clicked. Which is why all of DC's movies fail, they re just a huge studio sell-out. Maybe not DC's fault, but WB's.

However, villains like Catwoman & Klarion should stay villains.

Now she can go into her own little corner of the DCU and mess up a character that no one really cares about. Too bad Trevor McCarthy is stuck on it.

I'll give Catwoman a shot. Brown's a good artist, but I have no opinion on Valentine. Any change for that title is a welcome one, though.

Klarion series seems like an interesting idea, and new Catwoman direction sounds promising as well.

Posted by Jonny_Anonymous

@the_tree: I care more about Klarion than I ever will about freaking Catwoman....

Posted by Koays

This sucks.....you mean to tell me we have to wait till October for her to leave?

Seriously though, I did enjoy the first few issues of Catwoman under her (until i realized Nocenti had no clue what to do beyond a premise) so maybe she'll do better with Kalrion where no one is expecting anything.

Disagree, characters are better when they are able to be a hero, anti hero or villain. Granted Catwoman and Klarion should be a bit more sinister, they can work out as anything.

That said just because they have their own book means nothing to the point of if they are a hero,.

Posted by dagmar_merrill

@jonny_anonymous: Hey could you briefly sum up who Klarion is and what he stands for? The wiki doesn't really help with giving you a feel for the characters personality.

Just cancel Catwoman. Not because nocenti is leaving (I don't even know who that is) but because it is absolute crap

Thank god

I WANT A CYBORG ONGOING AND A SHAZAM ONGOING!!!

Posted by Outside_85

I wonder if this is a trend of somekind with DC:

  • Take poor writer
  • Add Kirby character of low to mid-level prominence
  • Watch it flop

It's a Bat-family title, they're not gonna cancel it unless it gets to dismal numbers. And why would they cancel it when they could just replace the creator (which is what they're doing) and turn the quality around? Nocenti is the reason it's crap.

Posted by Jayc1324

@catriona_knightfall: other bat family series have been canceled, even a batman book. It has been crap since Judd winick was on it, which means since the beginning. I like selina and think she deserves a series but they should just start over, this one is tainted.

Posted by Catriona_Knightfall

@jayc1324: The only title I can think of cancelled in the Bat family (that was not one of the fifty Batman titles) is Batwing, and that was after it was skirting around the 13K mark (IIRC) for months. Which is considerably lower than the danger zone, and the reason that it continued as long as it did with such abysmal numbers was mostly because it was a Bat-family book.

I agree that a reboot of the entire Catwoman title would be what's best (which is different from just straight up cancelling, which is what I took your post to mean), because it has....not been a good title to say the least. Makes me wistful for the Brubaker run in a big way.

I don't get it. It's great news that Nocenti isn't on the book anymore. No disrespect to her, but she was just hurting the character. WHy does DC release books that everybody knows are gonna flop or don't want to read. Instead of putting out ongoings of characters people have been asking for - Booster Gold, Shazam, Cyborg, and many more- they put out books like this, Foreverpeople, lobo, Sinestro, more bat books,Aquaman and the others, and other 50 books that got cancelled in the new 52. DC makes idiotic decision sometimes. At-least Marvel is putting out loads of books of characters people want to read.
