Ninja Turtles Reboot: Reasons To Have Some Faith

There's a lot of bad buzz surrounding the next Ninja Turtles movie, but there's still a few reasons to hold onto hope!

The heroes in a half shell are returning to the big screen (spoiler alert: Vanilla Ice said he'd love to make a cameo), but the future film is already getting a bad rep, despite only being in early pre-production stages. It all began when producer Michael Bay (that's right, folks, he's producing) casually stated the lovable Turtles would be aliens. Then to add insult to injury, an early script leaked and had quite a few hideous changes to the franchise. Bay and the team involved have told everyone to stay patient and assures you'll love the final product.

The "keep calm, bro" tactic isn't working, though. In fact, it has completely backfired. Every time I see an article about the upcoming reboot the comments section is filled with pure haterade. In spite of the less than stellar news, I'm still holding onto hope. And hopefully when you're finished reading this you'll agree... or at least think I'm not crazy.

There's no place like home.
There's no place like home.

"Michael Bay is killing my childhood! "

First and foremost, when people hate on Bay it is often due to his involvement in another beloved franchise: Transformers. The key difference here is Bay directed those films, and because of this, had far more creative say for the trilogy. Such isn't the case with Ninja Turtles. As a producer he's clearly getting a chance to speak his mind, but I fail to see why he's the man receiving all of the blame by the internet masses. Was it foolish of him to make that first statement about extraterrestrials? Certainly, but he's hardly the man with all of the input surrounding the film.

Also attached are director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle: Los Angeles), Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol writers (by the way, awesome movie) Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. So, if this film does turn out to be an abomination, there are far more people to blame than Bay. It's perfectly fine if you're not a fan of his style -- just be sure to keep in mind he isn't directing this one.

"That leaked script burned my eyes!"

I'll be the first to agree that blatantly unnecessary changes can be tiresome. Shredder is Colonel Schrader and the Foot Clan is a Special Operations unit? We're dealing with humanoid Turtles, surely the idea of a notorious Ninja clan in the modern era isn't so absurd it needs to be changed. Also, there was a key focus on Casey Jones and his relationship with April O'Neil instead of the heroes. Sounds a bit like Transformers, eh? Michael Bay once again took to the internet to respond and claimed that was a very early version that "saw the shredder." Is there any truth behind those words? This question brings me to my next point...

Schrader? I'm not in Breaking Bad!
Schrader? I'm not in Breaking Bad!

"Patience, grasshopper!"

Originally set to release December, 2013 (because nothing says "Happy Holidays!" like a good "Cowabunga!"), pre-production has been delayed and the release date has been pushed back to May 16, 2014. Word was floating around that the delay was to allow for more focus on the script, but Eastman gave 2 other reasons. First, it's to assure director Liebesman can get the quality of visuals he wants for the movie and to work on making sure the fight scenes are top-notch. Secondly, it's allegedly to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary, which happens to be May 5, 1984. It is worth noting that the TMNT co-creator had high praise for the film, dubbing it the "best" Turtles movie yet and claiming it will be sporting "The Raid:Redemption-style fight scenes." That's definitely raising the bar pretty high, Eastman.

As for the effects, Liebesman is aiming to duplicate the successful look that Rise of the Planet of the Apes brought to the big screen. In my opinion, this is the best road to take. Costumes can look great, but when the action begins (and I sincerely hope there's plenty of it), matters can get clunky and become an unfriendly reminder of how Power Rangers looked back in the day. With the proper technology, the Turtles will not only look great, but also be able to provide us with some stunning fight sequences and inhuman displays of agility.

Strike a pose.
Strike a pose.

What's especially important to keep in mind is the movie is still in its very, very early stages. It's far too soon to jump the gun and deem this movie terrible and a disgrace to the franchise. We simply don't have all of the facts and barely any official information. Clearly the outcry from fans has reached the ears of those behind the project and they'd be quite foolish to disregard all of the concern. So far we haven't received more than a few official blurbs about the final product. Instead of releasing the nerd-rage Kraken over what the movie might become, let's wait until we see what the film will be. In short, don't get upset over what could potentially be in the trash-bin at this point. Let's wait and see more official releases surrounding the movie before completely shunning it. When the trailer looks like garbage, you have my permission to vent. Until then, try to keep an open mind.

I am going to take a step back. count to ten, Then take a big breath and let someone else watch the movie first. If its not TMNT enough I am not going to watch it, or even regard it as part of the multiverse.

Instead I'll buy the Next Mutation dvd set. Sure its shit but at least it got some elements of the multiverse right.

The thing about all of this is that it is all negated by point one.

It's not directed by Bay, but it is produced by Platinum Dunes, who have NEVER made a decent quality enjoyable movie, re-boot or otherwise. It's directed by the guy that made the two turds in Battle: Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans, and produced by Michael friggin' Bay. This within itself is enough not to even give the film a passing thought. This film WILL NOT be good. It has nothing to do with whether I feel it will ruin continuity, or not have good FX or fight scenes, or whether it's "too early to tell". It purely comes down to this, Bay has made nothing but crap movies, Platinum Dunes has made nothing but crap movies and Liebsman has made nothing but crap movies.

Thus, this will be a crap movie. It is this kind of "benefit of the doubt" thinking that made Transformers the massive hits they were, and allowed this company to continue to take dumps all over loved franchises such as Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elms Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Transformers and now Ninja Turtles. Learn from past mistakes, curb enthusiasm now, and for-go the temptation to give these shit mongers more money to continue to buy beloved franchises and waste them.

You mean IDW. ;)

@guidoworsley: I completely agree with you that if you don't like something, don't support it.  Far too many people see a film and then think bashing it will somehow mean something.  Regardless of how you felt, at the end of the day you supported the product by paying money for it.

As for your opinions, we're not going to agree on this subject.  I honestly have no problem saying I enjoyed Transformers, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and even Battle: Los Angeles.  I'm not one to confuse liking a movie with thinking they're great.  I fully recognize the fact that none are necessarily good movies (except perhaps when it comes to visuals).  They each have the IQ of a rock, sometimes laughably bad dialogue, and trying to make sense of the plot can give one an aneurysm.  That said, I found all of them to provide a great amount of entertainment when it comes to the "leave your brain at the door" style.  I'm hopeful that Ninja Turtles will at least be able to provide that for me and hopefully show some degree of respect for the source material in the process.

Silly K4tz, I already think you're crazy.

I've already jumped on the 'wait and see' boat. The chances of me seeing it weren't very high regardless. I usually only see comic book films, and even though TMNT has a comic.. I wouldn't count this as a comic book movie. I came to a couple of these realizations awhile ago, so I decided to chill after my initial venting. Plus, TMNT wasn't one of my major childhood loves. Bay already touched Transformers, which I've gotten over (sometimes, time does heal wounds). However, Bay, if you even think about Power Rangers.. no manner of peaceful, love-preaching, forgiving all-powerful deities will be able to save you.

Let the haters begin bashing the movie! but in all seriousness I highly doubt the movie will be great, but I'm still going to spend my money and watch it for the simple fact that it might be very entertaining. I am a fan of the Transformers trilogy, not because the acting was Jonny Depp like, or because the script is absolutely amazing like 'there will be blood', but for entertainment. Will I give Ninja Turtles a chance? yes. Will I think it's likely to win an Oscar or Academy Award? no.

They might still do so.  All we know at the moment is that Bay claims that script was tossed out a while ago.

The only thing I didn't like about Battlefield: LA is that the Aliens where kinda dumb looking to me. I also actually enjoy the Transformer's trilogy and I only have a few gripes with it at all. So really I am more then willing to take a shot at this film. I just feel that it is the popular thing on internet to smash on Micheal Bay. Just wait until the friggin' movie comes out then decide if you want crap all over it.

God forbid they stray from the comic books! (Because that's never been done before)

We comment like we're the only audience comic book movies are made for.

Is it so hard to just enjoy seeing these visions become a reality and enjoy these shows that are usually targeted towards elementary kids and taken by parents who could care less as long as their kids are happy?

Nolan made the fanboys happy, so did the Avengers. Lets cherish those moments. To spew hate on something that may or may not even have a script at this point is such a waste of energy.

I remain optomisitc for a great time at the theatres in May of 2014.

I'm not really worried about the movie at all. I'm not a huge fan but the movie has plenty of time to develop since its release is all the way in 2014. I say we just sit back and enjoy life and wait til 2014 to go into nerd rage mode and go into anxiety about if the movie will be good.

I was actually excited for this film when I thought it was a Michael Bay one (I like his films), but now that I know it's being directed by Liebesman, I've just lost all faith. To give you an idea of why, below are the Metacritic scores for his films:

  • 37%: Wrath of the Titans
  • 37%: Battle: Los Angeles
  • 29%: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
  • 23%: Darkness Falls

I totally agree with this article. I just noticed recently how some of the internet hate that certain things receive is sometimes misplaced and a bit preemptive.

I didn't like the first Transformer movie so I didn't feel the need to see the others, that being said I do love TMNT (it was my birth into fanboyhood) so I will be giving this movie a chance but I feel that I must point out that I most likely won't be seeing it in the theaters unless the future teasers and trailers blow me away.

Maybe this "Col. Schrader" is the alias of Oroku "The Shredder" Saki, and he changed his racial appearance like the villain from 007: The World is Not Enough did. And Schrader's Special Ops team was formed using Foot Clan ninja who were Trojan Horsed into the American military. Maybe the clan will be called the "Ashi", which is Japanese for foot.

And maybe Michael meant that the origin will be alien in nature. That the mutagenic ooze came from space or from alien technology. Probably hinting at the return of the Utroms or Krang.

Or maybe I'm gay and retarded.

@Loki2u: My problem with that kind of thinking is if their gonna change everything fans like about a franchise just too appease an bigger audience, than way even make the movie in the first place when they could just come up with their own ideas. I'll be happy with the occasional cartoons and direct-to-video animated movies than another butchered live-action Transformers, G.I. Joe, or TMNT movie.

Alright... I buy for now that godawful script came before Michael Bay became producer. I am not very sure until the official synopsis is announced. Most people opinion won't change unless if they make a very impressive trailer. But I swear to you, if that movie features another audience surrogate that we follow instead of the title characters like you-know-who in Transformers, I am starting World War 3...

@k4tzm4n: Agreed, movies don't have to critically acclaimed to be entertaining. Which really should be the chief concern of movie makers, entertaining the audience.

@The_Grey_Queen: The fact that the creators are tied to this has given me hope for this film.

@kid Apollo: I feel the same way about the upcoming Evil Dead remake. So many people are bashing that movie cause it gonna have a female lead instead of another Ash. I hope that and this new TMNT kicks so much butt and make all these haters eat their words.

@Loki2u: At first I used to get so upset at how these movies based on comics and stuff would stray from the source material but then I came to realize that they aren't just making these movies just for the cult following but for anyone who is interested in seeing it.

@Danial79: I have never been a person to let critics dictate if I find a movie enjoyable or not, in fact I tend to go the opposite direction. I dislike majority of the movies that critics love and love movies that people like to bash for the simple fact that I enjoyed the movie. I love Darkness Falls and liked Wrath of the Titans cause I enjoyed watching them, and hated The Wizard of Oz (Score: 100) and Ratatouille (Score: 96) cause they bored me to tears.

I'm trying to hold off judgement until I see the trailer but it's really hard....TMNT has played a huge role in my life...they're what got me started reading comics so I'm pretty passionate about the movie being done right....heck as much as I like the new IDW series there's still a small part of me that hates every single part of their new origin

@k4tzm4n: I know right XD! But they can do worse... put some really badass scenes in that trailer that are nowhere to be found in the movie. Clash of the Titans and Snow White and the Huntsman did that and I got suckered into the movies because their trailers were so cool.

You guys remember when the "Dragon Ball" movie was announced? And how gradually we got more and more negative signs that the movie would be total crap? Stephen Chow dropped out, they cast odd people for the parts, re-shoots, re-titled, blah blah blah.

Not trying to be a pessimist but, yeah...

Based on some of the comments about Bay and Transformers, it seems that NONE of the geek community ever enjoyed any of the following:

  1. The Rock
  2. Bad Boys 1 and 2
  3. Armageddon
  4. Pearl Harbor
  5. The Island
  6. Transformers 1-3

If you can honestly say with a straight face that you've never once enjoyed any of these movies, then slap yourself on the back and continue with the hating.

If you have enjoyed any of these movies, take a deep breath and plow forward.

At the end of the day, your TNMT still exists and you're probably about 20 years older than the age group this film is being made for.

This sounds like a Bay bashing article without all the facts. The original alien origin quote from Bay could potential mean it will be more in line with what the original TMNT was about. Also the leaked script according to Bay was written before any of the current team was involved.

@Shamelesslysupportinaznballers: Bay bashing... by jumping to his defense over claims that he alone is going to ruin the movie?

I wasn't going to dive into old news and once again elaborate on the alien statement, primary because I've done that before:

Even though the ooze which mutates the Turtles is in fact from alien technology, it's tough not to get your mind running with the whole "they're from an alien race" part. I, along with many others, instantly thought this meant the four "turtles" would be from an alien planet, likely having a population of turtle looking inhabitants. So, it was healthy to lash out a bit at this, and naturally, almost everyone did. The rampant speculation had almost everyone up in arms, ranging from comic book creators, previous Turtle voice actors, and even made some late night shows (Kimmel, Conan). This sent a powerful message to the team behind Ninja Turtles  and it's clear they heard it loud and clear. Director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the TitansBattle: LA ) made this more than transparent during an interview with Collider :

Look, it's so funny. If everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from... that is alien ooze. Now I'm not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we're sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don't know, but we are like Michael said: we're expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology. I promise you: fans will love it.
Whatever mythology we’re building on or expanding is coming from that guy, Kevin Eastman’s head, who created the Turtles in the first place. And so everything will tie in with the mythology; fans will be extremely excited with what we’re coming up with. A lot of it is stuff he’s wanted to do for a long time, but just hasn’t had the opportunity because now we have the budget and things on this film to expand it in the right way. And so, I’m happy that everyone is extremely passionate, and they will not be disappointed. It’s all coming from the best possible place for this franchise.

The critical part here is "we're sitting in a room now figuring everything out." The outrage over a possible planet full of turtles boomed into their ears (to the point where I imagine they're bleeding). So unless they're trolling us for fun, there is absolutely no way in hell they're going to stick with the idea of a planet full of turtles... assuming of course that was even a possibility to begin with. That crap idea, if it was ever on the table, is almost certainly in the garbage bin at this point.
