New Marvel Characters Emerge for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Six new Marvel characters throw down the gloves for the next iteration of the Capcom fighting game. We have Nova, Iron Fist and... Rocket Racoon?

With Capcom announcing their new Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 title today, the Internet's aflutter with who the new characters could be. With 12 new fighters (six Marvel, six Capcom) being added to the ranks, there's a lot of potential for greatness, here.

Even though Capcom was looking to keep things relatively secret, the full roster of new characters got leaked anyway: we can expect Nova, Rocket Raccoon, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and Hawkeye will be entering the fray. Their character portraits have been leaked via a flaw in Capcom's web site, which you can take a look at below.

A couple of these characters are long-requested, as Iron Fist seems to be a natural fit for fighting games, and Doctor Strange's villains (Shuma-Gorath and Dormammu) have long been part of the franchise. None of these additions really surprise me in terms of fighting ability: I can definitely see some awesome combos already.

I don't see how Capcom is any worse that most other video game companies though.
You have EA who release the same sports games every year. Don't really know how many series they have going on, but there are several.
The Guitar Hero and Rock Band series is even worse. Both series have seen over 10 iterations in a few years.
For some reason i never hear people complain about having to purchase the same sports game every year, but i guess that's because fighting game fans are the most whiny bunch of people on the planet. They whine when games aren't released AND when they are. And the amount of whining about the roster for UMvC3 is completely unrivalled in the history of video games, and it really astounds me. For some reason everyone thinks Capcom owes them certain characters, and most people seem to want MvC2,5 instead of a new game, which is even weirder. First complain about re-releasing the same game year after year, then complain MvC3 isn't the same as MvC2.
Lastly they complain about milking and at the same time; whaaah no Megaman!

I also don't see how they don't listen to the fans. For UMvC3 they are putting in six character that ranked high on the polls, and have even stated that's the only reason they putted Strider in who they didn't want to use. The marvel side is entirely chosen by marvel this time so you can't blame Capcom for that.

I for one am really happy with them not going with a crap load of the characters from the last game. It really irritates me when we've had people ranting and raving for a new MvC for 10 years, but all they've basically wanted is Hyper MvC2. There are more characters from both respective companies that deserve a chance in the limelight this time-a-round, go Gambit and Ken are gonna have to suck it up.

Though Bison and Juri/Ms. Marvel and Spider Woman would've been great, I am happy with this roster, and I'll be glad to support Capcom with the purchase of UMvC3.

Heh, you do make a very good point. EA sports, I really don't even bother paying attention because I'm not really too much of a sports guy. But I do see your point here, and it's a very good one at that. And you're right, fighting game fans are technically one of the worst fans. Even when compared to game sporting fans, they whine and nip pick just about everything. Though... the difference between EA from Capcom. Capcom has a tendency to be one of the only companies that puts out a game that does well only to put a new one right after. Like with Resident Evil 5, as soon as it did good, several days later to a week, they came out with the Golden Edition Resident Evil 5, with barely any differences. They did the same for Street Fighter VI when they brought out Super Street Fighter VI. It's really about the remake oif the same game, but how soon they remake a game and put it out.

But as I've mentioned... Capcom does listen to their fans to a very distinct level, most of the characters they put in such as Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, and others were in the endings of some of the characters already in the game. To me, that says two things. They are following plot purposes to the story line or they're adding in characters that they feel the fans were demanding/requesting for, either or... When I mean listening to the fans... I mean along the lines that SNK does... Capcom will maybe put in a character here and there, be it for plot purposes or fan service. But SNK, they've had KoF games where they've put in all the characters fans have demanded, so no one goes home dissapointed. In fact... SNK with KoF 12, there was no Mai or K', this highly upset their fans and in order to correct the game while offering something new, they created KoF 13, better game mechanics, story line, with the addition of extra characters that were highly demanded while trying to intergrate a great plot. They also sway the story line to almost fan pickings to where they would like to see a character win in there game. Capcom won't do this, for example with Street Fighter... In every Street Fighter, Ryu comes out victorious as the tournament winner. They have even reconned the history of Street Fighter, when Chun-Li had one won. But they've re-written this to where Ryu has won, because he is the face of Street Fighter and that's just how it is... KoF, can't really be said the same. They've went from different winners of their game based on fans mostly. When Terry was introduced in KoF, fans were estatic for him and wish to see him win, SNK delivers. Kyo came around, same thing. Iori came around, same thing. K' came around, samething. At the sametime they provide good plot to make sense of it all.

So yeah... Capcom does listen to their fans, but very distinctly, they're more for profiting.

I personally I am not bothered by any of this, it's business, and a smart way of doing business. I can't really give them crap for it. But I'm not really surprised.

There actually is a big difference between SFIV and SSFIV, i think the difference is greater than between Tekken 5 and 6 for example, but i see how arguments can be made both ways. I'm not going to deny they could have made some bigger changes to SSFIV.
And (S)SFIV is a great example of a game with only fan favourites as your KoF example. Close to 40 characters and only seven new ones, eight if you count Gouken, plus that very few of the old cast has any new moves at all. They basically play very much like their old selves. That's my biggest criticism of that game, that they' were playing it too safe. And that they are going the opposite way with the roster for UMvC3 is really great.
I have the same problem with KoF XII and XIII, basically no newcomers at all if you exclude Hwa Jai, and most of the cast have old movesets. I might aswell play KoF98 or 2002 then.

Ryu hasn't won the majority of SF tournaments as you think, he's only the winner of SF1, and pretty much by cheating after losing against Sagat.
SFII has no official winner, but plot points seems to indicate Chun or Guile. This was never retconned since it was never official. Ryu possibly lost to Ken based on his wow to not marry Eliza until he's won a fight against Ryu.
SFIII was won by Alex. Ryu lost to Oro.
SFIV no official winner

Anyway i see it more as fanservice when they release better version of the games, i'm a fan and i want moar. Why would i complain when i get it?
I was really disappointed when Square only released the upgraded versions of FFX, X-2 and XII in japan, would have bought instantly.

I think it is ridiculous that that are making us buy another one instead of just doing multiple DLCs or maybe even possibly completing a game and giving us the best possible version upon release. It sucks because their track record says they will release a third version (See Street Fighter) and do this all over again. So basically to have the final version of this game I will have to wait about two years from now.

SF VI and SSF VI, I suppose that would depend on the player's perspective of how many changes were done, sense we don't agree heh. I seen very little subtly differences and seen very few characters added to the roster, but Cody and Guy were great additions and hoped they had been added. But I felt the character's added in in SSF VI, could've been DLC.

KoF XII was a big a dissapointment for KoF, it was possibly their worst KoF game. The only thing emphasized on was game mechanics and the graphics, which was a new thing that KoF had introduced. Taking over 100 hand drawn photos for each action/movement of the character. But... it lacked a lot of things, KoF XIII is a big difference. Game mechanics are a bit more smoother, additional characters that were being looked for by fans were added while adding a story.

Majority, I still think so. Though all of them, nah. As you pointed out, he had lost to Oro.

But in SF, I wouldn't really say he cheated. Sagat assumed he had won the fight by beating Ryu near an unconscious state but not quite unconscious and let his guard down to help Ryu up. Ryu allowed him self to be consumed unknowingly to the Satsui no Hadou and not only K.O Sagat with the Metsu Shoryuken.

As for SF II, you're right. But the indication of Guile or Chun-Li? I wouldn't really say that. Ryu went through many of the new warriors which would imply, Chun, Guile, Ken, etc. Being they were the new warriors added into the roster. Also... Chun li is never revealed to how far she makes it, or how many or who she has defeated. The same with Guile, in his ending... it shows a sketchy Bison, and Guile manages to get him into a submission lock and ask if he remembers him and Charlie. Bison refuses to answer, and pushes Guile to kill him in the sake of revenge. It never reveals what happened.

But here Bison being sketchy, it would indicate he had already fought someone prior. What time Guile meets Bison is unknown or if Bison has fought anyone, entangling in Ryu's story where he would be included as one of the new warriors that had been defeated or that Ryu's ending contradicts that Guile beats Bison, or that either two were indicated to win the tournament. In Ryu's ending, it says he defeats all the new warriors. This would imply everyone that's new that had been added to the Street Fighter II roster, Chun, Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Bison, etc. The only original cast members from Street Fighter I, was Ken and Sagat.

As for Ken who is the only implied to have possibly stopped Ryu, was shown to have the advantage over Ryu, rather than winning. Though I wouldn't go as far as to say it indicated him winning the fight because Ryu has this awful habit of his opponents gaining an advantage over him before he makes an extreme come back. But how ever this ending can be perceived either way, I just go by what's been consistently shown between Ken and Ryu. That Ryu usually comes out on top, as shown through the Alpha series, prequel to the SF II story.

The only person that is shown out right killing Bison, would be Akuma

Though still, due to the mystery as you said, it's unknown to who actually won SF II

SF III. Oro did defeat Ryu, and cause of that Alex did win by technicality. Though in defense of Alex winning that tournament. Oro didn't further press on to finish the tournament, and afterwards was beaten by Ryu with relative ease due to the ending of Ryu having no wounds of any kind.

SFIV, no official winner as you said.

But... Still... There's nothing to say that Ryu hasn't won the majority, just not all of them.

Yeah, it could be fan serviced, though I think it could've just been DLC, rather than remaking the game it self with as many character's they have show cased to have added. But there could be other issues, maybe they needed to remake the game for balance with the new characters, who knows. but I'm in favor of it being considered that the additional characters could have just been DLC. But as for complaints, none on my end, just something I'd expect from Capcom with the trend they've been going.

I don't even bother with Square to be honest, haha. It's just because the games kinda been going down hill and the only thing that has been saving their hide in my opinion is the early FF games and the FFVII series they've been profiting off from, from house hold collectible that range from action figures, life sized posters, replica model of Midgar, cell phone games, the on going series of FFVII from PC to DoC, to even soft drinks like "potion" and "hi-potion", the different versions of cosplay costumes that range from each of the FFVII series down to cosplay weapons and vehicles.

I notice you are a Mod, for quite some time. So maybe you can help me out with navigating Comicvine a bit better. I'd like to make character verse threads, or battle threads of characters. Though I don't want to go ahead and create a thread or blog not in the right area. How do I go about doing battle threads/blogs the correct way?

but yeah im also stoked for Iron fist, cause Danny Rand is awesome next to or if not equal to shang chi, and nova the human rocket who was a great character who got crazy good before they decided to kill him off.

Well, they are updating a lot for the game. Besides, this is actually cheaper. Had the 12 characters been DLC, that would have been 5$ each, we'd pay over 60$. Here, we are only paying 40$

C.Viper is a better fit than Cammy for this series. Rocket Raccoon is a unique choice and Wesker is a badass and popular with the RE fans. The pros love Trish and Shuma-Goraths is classic to this series.

Venom is overused and there are enough X-men, so no to Psylock. I agree about Doc Ock though.

That wasn't an Official poll, that was a Fan poll(Seth even said so himself that it wasn't official). It was only for the Members of Unity anyway and did't count fans from anywhere else.

Besides, when MvC3 was revealed, fans kept asking and asking for Nemesis, so they put him in. Besides, Nemesis stands out, which is what matters.

@Manchine: it doesn't even run on the SFIV engine (an enhanced version, maybe, but a SF engine - no, sirree), so I'm not sure what led you to believe it's a Street Fighter game at all. by the way, if it's any consolation, Juri, Sagat, Bison and Cammy are already busy being in another game - it's called Super Street Fighter IV :P

not trying to pour on the haterade, by the way - just saying I like a little flavor in my games, even though Nemesis is going to lumber around like a big undead jerk
