New Gods Cast in Smallville

Who's playing Desaad and Glorious Godfrey?

I really doubt Desaad's going to look like this in the show.

You might recall that Darkseid’s going to be the “big bad” of this season of SMALLVILLE. Following that, it’s looking like his Apokolips-borne minions will be joining him. According to Splash Page, Steve Byers and Michael Daingerfield will be playing Desaad and Gordon Godfrey respectively. They’re going to show up in the third episode of the season, which will also see Laura Vandervoort’s return as Supergirl. Both of these actors have a host of TV credits under their belts, with appearances on CSI: MIAMI, MUTANT X, STARGATE SG-1, THE DEAD ZONE and SUPERNATURAL.

This final season of SMALLVILLE is starting to remind a bit of the final season of the SUPERMAN cartoon from the 90s, which similarly pitted Supes against Darkseid and all the evil New Gods. However, seeing as how Glorious Godfrey’s going to be using his more human-sounding “Gordon” alias from LEGENDS, I wonder if they’re going to be a taking an approach similar to what Grant Morrison did in the MISTER MIRACLE mini-series for SEVEN SOLDIERS. That is, all the New Gods will show up human incarnations, which would certainly fit SMALLVILLE’s more down-to-Earth M.O. == TEASER ==

I feel like pointing out that the New Gods have sort-of, kinda-of already had their own movie. John Byrne, of all people, has advocated that the director of the live-action MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE worked over the HE-MAN mythology to better resemble Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. Basically, if you swap Orion for He-Man, Skeletor for Darkseid, the Sorceress for Highfather, Evil-Lynn for Desaad, Gwildor for Metron, Beast Man for Kalibak, and so on… the parallels are hard to miss. Hell, they even used Boom Tubes to travel across universes! Come to think about it, seeing as how they haven’t cast Darkseid for this show yet, it’d be awesome if they cast Frank Langella to properly portray the nasty man. Need convincing? Watch this

JLU ended with Darkseid vs Superman as well, I guess that's the proven method of going out with a bang! (not that I'm complaining)

though I think the New Gods being human would be a lot less like the rest of the show then them being aliens...this show has been alien-filled since Episode 1 of Season 5

im waiting until the series ends before i start. i'm so excited!

Would it kill the CW to have the characters appear on tv as they do in the comics just once?! I mean, I hope we dont get THIS incarnation of Darkseid:

 YO!

That would just SUCK!

I vote for Michael Ironside. His voice acting for Darkseid in the Superman TAS and Justice League TAS was incredible!

YAY! I Love Smallville! I hope this season is good. They need to make up for season 9, the worst season of Smallville.

I'm just wondering what they'll look like. Smallville has managed to make every character look human. What will they do for the new gods who certainly wouldn't demean themselves by changing their appearances?

That would have been sweet but he already plays  General Sam Lane

Wow. Masters of the Universe--one of my all-time favorite jams, know every word--and Fourth World.  Now, as a little boy I was old enough to realize, "Wait a friggin' minute, this movie is nothing like the cartoons and comics."  I still loved the crap out of it because I was a "He-Man Kid" as opposed to all my boys being down with the Joes, TF, Thundercats and all that.  But as I got older I thought about what the director was basing his sci-fi approach off of.  I have always thought of the element of Star Wars and a little Conan was used.  But Fourth World.  Wow.  You learn something new everyday, kids.

As far as this season's shapings up - it's looking mad sweet.  Kalibak is who I want to see them work in.  But I totally agree with Tom, the New Gods are going to pose as humans.  We have to expect that and I for one can't wait.  It's my favorite television show ever, about my favorite hero in the history of Ever.  I'm so stoked.

since when hav tv shows or movies about comic characters been just like they are in the comics? and if smallville made their show just like superboy or superman they would lose all/most of the people who dont read comics. and thats a lot of ppl.

I can't believe I was right about the NEW GODS in SMALLVILLE.

I imagined DC doing a New Gods Fourth World movie like a Lord of the Rings epic, set in a far off universe like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars (having no connection to our own Earth, not mentioning it or showing Earthmen like Olsen or Superman), and taking place over the course of Four films.
Kirby wrote it being inspired by Lord of the Rings and meant it to be along the lines of that story, I think the movies would be a huge draw and very grand in scale.
So if they do the more down to Earth New Gods as human gangsters type thing that's cool.
Leaves them open to still do the movie later.

I think Mark Hamill would be great for the role of Desaad.

Now I have to start watching Smallville again.

On a side note, I'd like to see them portrayed like they were in Seven Soldiers. Definitely one of the most compelling and powerful portrayals of New Gods in the last two decades.

@NightFang:  But Skywalker plays the voice of joker.... then again that is just a voice and Skywalker is the man!

@Iron Fist Angel: You do get that Desaad and Gordon Godfrey well just be faking as humans with the other human-type New Gods and secretly attacking the heroes and building armies of supervillain as Darkseid earthly agents, right?

Sorry I totally posted this in the wrong forum. I was supposed to be replying to the article about X-men: First Class.

This season seems to be shaping up nicely.

I completely missed out on the New Gods/Masters of The Universe parallels. That's interesting.

Did they show Darkseid in the Comic-Con trailer? The person in the tank? Was that Darkseid or a parademon?

After the horrible Doomsday I don't want to see New Gods in Smallville.

they've already all appeared...well Orion's only been mentioned but Godfrey, Granny and Desaad all appeared...and Darkseid did kind of...I can't figure out if he's going to be an actual being or just an essence
