New Female THOR on the Way

Looks like Thor is no longer worthy of Mjolnir and someone else is taking his place.

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series,THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into theMarvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Our first thought was this would be Angela taking his place. But that doesn't look like her hair. And they do say it's a "brand new hero." Guess we'll have to wait and see what's going on.

So glad I dropped this title. Liked the God Butcher but it's downhill after that.

Betty-Ray Bill?

Are they really just going to call her Thor? That's really really really weird.

Marvel's Big Three?

That's funny, I thought they had a big two - Spider-Man and Wolverine.

ill bet thor odinson will be back in a year.

This new "thor" will lose the hammer and be given a replacement like beta ray bill.

What the Hel? o_O Are they crazy? How can girl be /Thor/?

My first thought was Angela as well....Will just have to wait and see.

Slott seems to have started a guess is this is going to be how they fit Angela into Marvel since she's an Asgardian now and they are trying to get her exposure.

Why call her Thor though? Makes no sense since Thor isn't even a female name.

Why not just give Valkyrie or Angela an ongoing?

The hell?

Okay i get this "Marvel reaching to the female demographic group" thing, but between Pepper donning an armor and this, i think it's getting too far. Bet the new Captain America(since the old one lost his serum) will be a female too...............

I really hope it's not Angela. I don't get the point of having the rights to Angela, if they just completely change her character.

Assuming it's not Angela, I don't see a problem with this.

Not gonna lie, I like the way she looks. Wonder Woman, you've just been put notice

Well technically it's not the same series since it's getting relaunched

I wonder how fans keep up with all these changes Marvel is making to their universe.

This is interesting ?

I like to the design but I wonder what's going to happen to normal Thor.

If it's Valkyrie...sure. We all know it WILL be temporary. If its anyone else, then....what? Why? -.-

If it's not Angela then what is the point?, I mean Marvel needs to stop with this replace a top hero every other week. I mean Cap is being replaced, now Thor and we all know that Wolverine when he dies will be replaced as well.

I was really supportive of the idea of Angela being Thor's long forgotten sister. But this, i don't think i can swallow it. Especially when Thor God of Thunder was one of handful of Marvel/DC titles i was really enjoying from today's market.

Well, I didn't like the God Butcher arc of the title..but this might actually peak my interest, I'll give it a read.

Also, she's gonna have serious helmet hair.

Inside the Marvel Universe, it's Iron Man, Thor and Cap, since they are the most well known to Marvel Earth.

Damn, I just caught up on God of Thunder last night. I was hoping Aaron and Ribic would keep spinning gold.

Is Angela going to be taking up the mantle, or is it an all new character?

OK now I've got my gif related disbelief at the inanity and ridiculousness Marvel have pulled yet again, I'll make some damn points about this gender change. This is beyond ridiculous from Marvel that it isn't even funny, it's just a pathetic marketing gimmick designed for shock value and cash grabbing. Not only do Marvel make the mistake to remove Steve Rogers from the position of Captain America just to put a temporary Falcon in place for a token's character sake, they now have the misguided notion to promote the opposite gender by replacing Thor's brilliantly written series by Jason Aaron. So I guess Tony's brother Arno is going to be the new Iron Man because Marvel's reasons are sooo enlightened on these matters. Another thing I'm annoyed about is Thor being found unworthy. That really ticks me off about this news. Thor's gone through growth and development as a character over the years and whilst he has flaws, Aaron has done an excellent job explaining why Thor is worthy to wield Mjolnir. Pulling this stunt demeans Thor's character badly.

I was really enjoying Aaron's Thor series too, undoubtedly one of Marvel's best, consistently well written titles that is one of the best things to happen to The God of Thunder. And now the editors have gotten in the way with this hair brained scheme at promoting 'gender equality.' If I was directly addressing the Thor creative team and editors who seem to want gender equality in the Thor line, this is what I'd say. Make a damn effort to promote Thor's female support cast; Jane Foster, Roz Solomon, Lady Sif, Valkyrie, hell even Angela since you're bringing her in (and I have the feeling Angela is going to be the new Thor now.) Believe me when I say female characters need more promotion and treatment in comics but make them new characters or flesh out the old ones you have. Don't shoe horn a female character into a male hero's position as, at the end of the day, she's still defined by the male character, not her own legacy. And that point is the real nail in the coffin for Marvel's misguided attempts at promoting gender diversity; that the new female Thor will still be defined by being a female version of Thor in the first place. Call me old fashioned if you will but I like Captain America as Steve Rogers, Tony Stark as Iron Man and Thor Odinson as Thor. These shoehorned replacements can never match the quality or history that the originals have. You can't beat the originals as they say.

Since Thor was on the cover of that Avengers time out issue with Jarnbjorn, I'm hoping that Aaron will still be working on Thor's series since he is still the God of Thunder. And it really ticks me off beyond belief that the solicit says "And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!” Don't lie or kid yourselves Marvel, you know you'll give Thor Mjolnir back within the year. Just like Superior Spider-Man, Bucky as Captain America, Wolverine being dead etc. If Aaron still has a separate Thor series to go alongside the female Thor, I might read that. If not, I'm done with Marvel for the time being. Thor: GOT was the only Marvel series I was reading and if I have to read female Thor to see what's going on with male Thor, I'm not having it at all.

Finally, I hope the feminists and pushers for women to have greater roles in comics don't jump down my throat by proclaiming this a hate speech. It's an impassioned plea to Marvel pointing out the errors of their ways and, whilst it is just one opinion, is probably going to be shared by loads of die hard Thor fans too. If people like this then...good for you I guess, it's your call. But I most certainly do not. And I support a greater diversity in female leads such as Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, Wonder Woman etc in comics. I just don't see the plausibility or sensibility in this foolish temporary change for the sake of change that is being proclaimed here. Cast this as an angry rant if you must but at least it'll be a rant where I've made some critical and fair points of this ostentatious change. That will be reverted in a year as all other Marvel changes are.

I was going to say I'd feel bad for Thor fans but I'm a Cap & Wolverine fan but yeah at this point in a lot of cases I just feel bad for all Marvel fans.

What a joke...

@redalert539: When did these things happen ?!!!!!

Apparently recently. I don't really follow the Marvel Universe anymoe i just know they happened at some point. Oh, and i hear Wolverine is dying soon :P

I'm 90% sure it's Angela.

And I'm pretty sure this isn't what Neil Gaiman had in mind when he sold her to Marvel.

Well at least they're not messing up Spider-Man anymore. But sorry Thor fans.

This is weird, especially since they're treating it as if Thor is a title and not a name (similarly with Valkyrie, though it is said her name is Brunhilde). The problem is that he was always referred to as Thor, even before he was worthy to wield the hammer. The hammer even says they'd have the "power of Thor", not be Thor. This isn't even the first time Thor was a female (Earth X alternate universe, Loki tricked Odin into turning Thor into a female to show him "humility" by making him "the weaker sex"). Other's have wielded the hammer and weren't referred to as Thor, so again, this is worded weirdly. As for it being permanent, what does this do for King Thor in the future of Thor, God of Thunder who is male? This doesn't feel organic and like someone else said, they should just make a new character or flesh out existing ones instead of building on top of a current character and giving them that stigma. I understand by building on the previous character, it gets a little bit of hype and somewhat of an instant fanbase, but that's a shaky leg to stand on as it also pushes away some current fans and keeps those away who may not be fans of Thor, and rather see a new character.

Edited by V_Scarlotte_Rose

So, is this a new character? If she's new I might give this a go, but if it's an established character taking over I'll maybe skip it.

Didn't see this one coming though. :)

@slimj87d: Thanks Slim, glad someone agrees with my post. It'll beat all the gender equalists who might jump down my throat :P
