New Female THOR on the Way

Looks like Thor is no longer worthy of Mjolnir and someone else is taking his place.

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series,THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into theMarvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Our first thought was this would be Angela taking his place. But that doesn't look like her hair. And they do say it's a "brand new hero." Guess we'll have to wait and see what's going on.

@jonny_anonymous: They probably thought that giving Ms Thor a female sounding name would make her more of a female version of Thor. Like she isn't that already.

It's not sexism to point out the female Thor is a gimmick and is ultimately going to be defined mostly by being a female version of Thor. Not her own character.

Marvel, why are you guys changing characters every three months or so? We don't want different Thor's or Captain America's, we just want good stories with the same old heroes.

Why not just give Valkyrie or Angela an ongoing?

I can agree with Valkyrie but given how marvel's franchises are going this will be temporary but I personally would like to see a female Thor who can go toe to toe with hulk, surfer, and others.

Right, people shouldn't feel angry that one of their favorite characters has had an unnecessary sex change/gender replacement? Anyone who opposes this must be a blatant sexist and lack reading comprehension? Get real.

They didn't announce a Sif or Angela book because it wouldn't get them time on The View. More people are taking about the Thor comic than before. Will that turn into sales? I doubt it.

This is a publicity stunt, that will be reverted back in time for Avengers 2. Chris Hemsworth still has films left under his contract. Also this was an editorial mandate. Captain America will not be Steve Rogers, and I bet Iron Man gets replaced soon too. Sales will boost for a little bit, books will be rapidly double shipped to make it look longer, it will get good reviews here, and the CBR forums will continue to love it. Then big event where the heroes return.

I'll be dropping Thor after September, and there are more potential books to replace it with. Wytches looks awesome, and I'm pumped for that Secret [6] book DC is doing. Gillen and Bennett teaming up for a book, sounds better than this. I hope no one who isn't a fan doesn't hate buy this. Vote with your wallet. I'll return if it gets interesting again.

Seems Marvel is flipping the switch in the Thor universe.

House of Ideas MY ASS. Marvel's office: "Let's kill Wolverine and make an event with 3D covers", "Turn Steve Rogers old and make the lame Flacon the next Captian America", "Turn Loki from a Badass villian to an Anti-heroe beacuse the movie says he is missunderstood" and so on FU&@%G "GREAT, ALL NEW ALL DIFERENT CHARACTERS" EVERYBODYa

Yeah I see what you're saying. They must not have any ideas left if they're trying new things and chaining the status quo of lots of their character. /sarcasm.

Maybe it's time to start a change. Org or a petition.

I'm hoping that Aaron will have Thor in his own series whilst writing Lady Thor in her own title. If he doesn't, I will be done with Marvel period.

Ok.... So I doubt it's Angela (which I think is also another stupid story arc) since she is a red head and the picture is of a blonde female, unless of course when you get Thor's powers from Mjolnir it also dyes your hair blonde... I don't remember Beta Ray Bill growing hair?? But Marvel does such stupid $**t lately I wouldn't doubt it. Enough with Gender swapping and Race changing already. Just like everything else being done today simply for "shock and awe" (don't even get me started on the new FF movie Fox is doing), and trying to bring in new interest and readership. And revealing the news on the TV show The View?? Hmmm... You really think the majority of their female viewership jumped out of their seats cheering? Most probably just scratched their heads and continued to check pinterest, facebook, instagram, twitter or whatever news/social media they use. Marvels readers and fans, wether Men or Women, Young or Old, are not mindless. So please stop treating us that way. How about just good old fashion storytelling?? Or is that too hard all of a sudden? Their success in the Movies and purchase by Disney has really made them go a little crazy. They went from a pretty good animated Avengers cartoon depicting Thor properly, to a Disney more kid friendly Avengers cartoon version making Thor an idiot and downplaying his power (at least in the movies they represent him in a proper light). Iv'e been a Thor Fan since the 80's and I highly doubt this new version would be permanent. They also did not state/clarify wether it is the "current" timeline Thor or not. In the future story arc Thor has 3 daughters, so maybe one of them take up the mantle since daddy is no longer "worthy", and thats been done how many times now?? Real fresh idea there. Also having Thor's powers does not make them "Thor" as others have stated. They may take up the mantle of Thor, but Thor is Thor. Thats his name. Its not a title. Thor Odinson. Thor didn't become Odin when he was lord of Asgard, he was still Thor Odinson, just now the King of Asgard instead of the Prince of Asgard. Without Mjolnir, he's still Thor. He doesn't stop being the Prince of Asgard or the son of Odin. Really stupid of Marvel to say crap like that. So maybe his daughter who is blank Thorson, decides to just call herself Thor instead.. Blah, blah. If it's temporary OK, but permanent like they are suggesting? Uninterested. So this will be the first time in over 30 years that I will not be interested in reading a Thor title. Not because it's a female Thor, but the stupid way they are marketing it. If they didn't try to make such a big deal over it, and it was just another storyline, maybe I'd be willing to give it a go. There have been lots of really poor stories, but also lots of really good ones. And if this is actually true of being "a new permanent Thor" then all I have to say to Marvel after 30+ years of reading their books and buying countless busts, statues, and action figures, and getting my kids (son & daughter) to be as big of fans as I am..... F*&k you Marvel, F*&K YOU!!!

@jonny_anonymous how do we know its not Valkyrie or some other pre-existing character? Naming any ongoing "Thor" would likely boost sales over naming it "Valkyrie". A preexisting character that takes the name Thor along with the hammer could just be Marvels way of keeping the identity hidden while attempting to boost sales for new readers. Although, at first glance I would assume it's probably not Valkyrie but I sure would not rule out the possibility until the character is revealed or announced.

As a big Thor fan, I think this a very good idea actually.

1) It's not permanent, so people shouldn't be worrying. If anyone reads the current Thor comic, they know this isn't permanent.

2) This will get readers who only read triple A titles to read books with female leads. It expands people minds and expands the audience that reads female-led books which is very necessary.

3) Female books will be more likely to be read when they are released. People constantly complain that there aren't enough female books, when they aren't read. Marvel did try when they put Sif as the lead in Journey into Mystery. I thought it was a great book, but people refuse to read it. It makes no sense, but now we are tackling a much bigger audience.

4) I think this is great for the whole Thor mythos. Its a different take on a great title. It is an excellent opportunity to explore what it means to be worthy with Mjolnir.

5) The character looks sick, and this looks like a lot of fun.

More I think of all of this, the more I think it's tied to Age of Ultron since the universe was ripped open. Hickman's Avengers is going to lead to a huge event soon and I think we will see that these versions of the characters are from alternate universes. I mean Thor's comic shows Thor from all different time lines, So does the X-men. Uncanny Avengers has taken place in a different universe for most of it and Avengers/New Avengers are showing different time lines and realities.

This stuff is a lead up to Axis and will be done with in time for Avengers 2 when all Marvel's top books will get new relaunches. For some like Cap that could mean a new creative team.

@annoyedimmortalspirit: yea its a little stupid, but I'm guessing she'll be using it more as a codename than an actual name. it seems like a slightly misguided attempt to repeat Brian Wood's explanation/intention of why his all-female X-book is still called X-Men

Okay, I don't know why but this actually seems like a really good refreshing change and I am only saying this because the writer is Jason Aaron. And after everything he has already done with Thor I can trust him and say that I really want to see what he will do.

But in the meantime *fingers crossed that it's not Angela*

I still can't understand why the character will still be called "Thor", since 1) She's not Thor. Thor is a person, not a position or rank, and 2) The real Thor's not dead, so it's not like she can be taking up his name as a new mantle, and 3) Thor is a male's name. It's like a Sif calling herself "Odin the All-Father" if one day she happens to take over Asgard, with the real Odin still alive and kicking.

Oh I found it! The source is marvel so classic Thor will be around and clearly cooler then ever.

And now thinking about it. If you've been reading Avengers it makes perfect sense. This is from Avengers 31 what future Thor says here...

No, it'll be some new character & then when the next movie comes out & they bring back the real Thor, she'll just be hovering around for a few years until she gets reworked again. Connor Hawk, Wally, Guy/Kyle, Bucky, the other Black Widow, Artemis of Bana, Azreal-Batman.

& dumb nonsense like this is why the comic book industry is in decline.

Also, Thor is based on religious mythological source, its not the same as if this new chick become Captain America. Or Batwoman. So it's just culturally dumb & insulting. Those ancient people made Thor a male for a reason, & probly not ust because they were sexist. It would be like making Jesus female.

@lvenger: I have somewhat mixed feelings, but I'm leaning towards positive. Without having the comics to read, I can't be too detailed with an opinion yet.

I like that there'll be another female solo option at Marvel, even if it's still a good few less than male solos. Some familiar elements of Thor comics, combined with what looks like could be a brand new character makes me think it could be an easy series to jump onto.

Personally, I probably would have preferred a character I already like to get a series, but that may happen, as Marvel seems to be making an effort at the moment. Using the name 'Thor' seems a little odd, but it might be explained in some way.

I wonder how long this could last though. Original Thor is pretty popular after all. If she takes on a new identity later, and this is just to get her early publicity, it seems like an O.K. idea.

This maybe isn't the ideal way to do things, but at the moment I think I'm O.K. with it. I don't read solo Thor, in part due to the huge history to catch up on, but I'll probably give this new person a go, if it's a new character. I have a casual knowledge of Asgardian things, enough to get by, and the idea of experiencing a new character is kind of cool. It seems to be working with Kamala Khan.

The f*ck is this?? What's gonna happen to Jason Aaron's current series. They better not cancel it!! I don't really have a problem with this and I'm kind of excited to read whatever this is about but I have a problem with Thor being gone, and a girl using the name Thor. Its not like batman or superman where it's a title anyone can pick up. Thor is a name, a singular person. You can't just BE Thor. Only Thor is Thor. That's actually really uncreative and boring, should've given her her own name. Anyway, let's just hope this isn't permanent (of course its not) and Thor's current series stays alive.

@jonny_anonymous: The only statement I can find that is close to what your saying is that this is "a brand new female hero". But that seems to insinuate that the new Thor is not anyone the readers have met before. I guess that debunks my first post.
