New Doctor Who (Matt Smith) Trailer

It's official, David Tennant is no longer the Doctor.

Farewell David Tennant.  It's been a blast seeing you as the Doctor.  Now we have this Matt Smith bloke to look forward to.  Is anyone actually looking forward to his run as the Doctor?  I know it's not fair to the new actor having to be compared to the previous Doctor.  I said it before, I really dug Christopher Eccleston and wasn't thrilled with Tennant in the first couple episodes.  Obviously he managed to win me (and the world) over pretty quickly.  Now that Tennant is gone (don't spoil it, us Americans don't get to watch "The End Of Time, Part 2" until tonight), a trailer for the next season is available (courtesy of Rich Johnston).

There aren't really any spoilers here.  I couldn't even resist watching and I personally hate spoilers.  So it's safe to watch.  Check out Matt Smith and see if you think he has what it takes to be the next Doctor.

Not as bad as I thought.  Since I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and have seem all the regenerations since the third Doctor, I know this is to be expected.  The Doctor is bound to regenerate sooner or later.  You just have to accept it.  From this trailer, Matt Smith doesn't seem as bad as I first thought.  And it's great seeing those "Blink" statues coming back!

If you're curious about the previous regenerations or would like to see them again, check out this awesome article featuring all the past regenerations that io9 posted!  Just do not watch the last clip if you haven't watched "The End Of Time, Part 2"!!

Stealing my 'news' again, boss-man! Heh heh...

I can't wait to see the return of the Weeping Angels!  Shame we wont see Sally Sparrow again too.  This trailer really does have me excited to see the new series.

Posted by SigersonLTD

Doesn't seem fair that the Tenth Doctor didn't get to work with Sally Sparrow...

In any case, everyone's going to have their favorite Doctor, especially those that have followed the series for a long time. I'm sure there are those that want to see Tom Baker, or Jon Pertwee again....

Ok, spellcheck says I got that wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's right. Someone let me know who's wrong :)

Is it just me or are they going tall and thin? Even with David Tennant, they created a very different mood and presence from Christopher Eccleston's Doctor; equally dynamic but different.
Does anybody know if the originally conceived Doctor Who was a very thin, youthful guy? I realize there were several incarnations from the 60s to 80s on BBC, but does anybody have info on the very first concepts the original writers were trying to convey?
Posted by BKole
@MrCipher: The very, very first Doctor was an old guy. The Doctors have got progressively younger as the years have gone on, in fact, the first episode, the Doctor is barely in it. The main focus really is on his Grand-Daughter, which is a far cry from the Doctor Who we know and love today.

Though to be fair, I really haven't disliked any Doctor incarnation I've seen thus far, except for the 90's TV Movie. That was pretty dire.

i was very sad to see this last doctor go ... i only hope this new guy can live up to his legacy

the new trailer has got me excited for the new series (of course it has) but from what i've seen of matt smith so far... i don't think that he's going to be as readily accepted as David Tennant was it'll be interesting to see a younger take on the characterisation of The Doctor (especially since Matt Smith has confessed to never having seen a full episode of Doctor Who... maybe this will be an advantage and a chance for a fresh take, who knows?)
as for me, i'm very sad to have seen David Tennant's stint as The Doctor end but i wish him luck in the future, and good luck to Matt Smith!
and for those who haven't yet seen "The End Of Time Part II"... keep tissues at the ready

Love "Blink" episode.

I'm dreading this Dr, don't know why.......Think he's alittle young for the part and lacks the depth to play a 900+ year old Time lord....I hope I am wrong :)
Posted by G-Man

He seems to be getting younger and younger.  Must be all the running he does.  Keeps him in shape.

Posted by Hamz

David Tennant wasn't exactly accepted with open arms straight away and he took awhile to prove he could handle the role. I hope Matt Smith can do the same and would like to give him a chance.

Was a great show, I loved it. In my opinion the change of Head Writer will make more of a difference in whether the next Doctor is a success. I think Matt Smith seems capable of acting as The Doctor, but if he's in a bad story it won't matter. Good luck to David Tennent and Russell T. Davies.

I love his Bow-Tie. Now thats style!!!

I think the thing is that we all are so used to David Tenent (brilliant job :P) but as someone said, we struggled with him at first, I was a bit sceptical bout Matt Smith at first but I think he does look pretty good in this trailer, I think as fans of the who series, sureley we can give the bloke a chance? I mean, he knows hes got to live up to David Tenent but the fact remains he is NOT tenent, he is Matt Smith so I say good luck, il watch the new series and if I dont like it fair enuf but he deserves teh chance

I don't like the look of the new doctor in that trailer. :S And I despise the new logo. I'm still on the edge, but I guess I'll just have to wait till later tonight to watch it and find out how much I hate or like the new doctor...

Rocking the tweed jacket eh? Looks to be good, could've sworn I saw Gwen Cooper but I must've imagined it not sure I like the Doctor using a gun though

Posted by Kiara_Sullivan

Speaking of Gwen, any news on Torchwood? Are they picking it up for another season? I really liked the show.

agreed....i'm gonna of miss Tennant tho.

I feel wierd seeing a new actor as the Doctor. I'm sure Matt will be good though.
Posted by Pania

Matt Smith does not bother so much as how...macho they are writing 11. Guns, belting people? Awful lot of violence there for a character who founding idea is to outwit his enemies rather than outfight them. Seems awfully "Hollywood" for Doctor Who.

Posted by Mbecks14

what the hell is this show about?

Edited by Pania
@Mbecks14: Seriously?

It's a pillar in Science Fiction. Longest running SciFi television program ever. It's just that it is just being discovered by the more casual SciFi audience on this side of the pond. The only place you could find it before cable was late night PBS programming and pirated DVD/Video cassettes.

@.Mistress Redhead.: Read what I wrote in her thread.  That was on the FORUMS, this in in the NEWS.  Plus if you looked at this entire post, you'd see that I also included all the past regenerations the Doctor has gone through.  So relax.

david tennant got a little full of himself and so did russel
the whole swan song with the doctor saying good bye to everyone was way over the top....he isnt tom baker, and no one will ever top him... but the new doctor looks proper. he has a classic costume... i mean seriously any one can wear a trench coat. look at the joker, but this costume is stunning. because the classic doctor didn't care what anyone thought about his ridiculous apparel, plus they got STEVEN MOFFAT as the main writer who will hopefully bring the stories to a less childish theme. Plus i love the new logo. Hopefully matt smith wont show off as much. Cant wait to see him in full action. Now can someone please tell me if the timelords are still around.

Posted by welshguy

New Doctor looks okay. I do not really mind if this new incarnation is going to be more physical and whatnot, so long as the stories remain good and they don't become too childish.
Got to say, the Tennant swansong did not end in quite the manner I was hoping for

i'll give him a chance but im still a little hesitant

@ Hamz: it's a good point, but the footage of Matt Smith as the doctor that has been released so far doesn't look particularly reassuring
i'm trying not to judge until i see him in a few episodes, but i still have my doubts

I`m hoping the next Doctor is gonna act like a combination between the 4th and the 10th
Posted by G-Man

I finally watched the end.  I started it last night and finished just now.  My daughter came in for the last 40 minutes.  Right in time for the final fight with the you-know-whos and the Master.  She was immediately sucked in and I kept stopping to explain forty-something years of the show to her.  Funny, when she saw the TARDIS, she was confused at first how it could be bigger, then she said, "Oh, it's just like Snoopy's doghouse."  It was sad to see this Doctor go even if it wasn't with a bang (as most people have mentioned).

LOVE last nights episode. Absolutely loved it, not too keen still on Matt but he did well in those last few moments

well with David Tennant gone... Matt Smith has got some huge shoes to fill as The Doctor...  I am hoping the Young Buck can keep it One Hunid for us as The Doctor... who knows maybe he can do it... but Gawd Almighty he looks Young... lol

@timrothsays:
agreed although it was "i don't want to go" it is the most pathetic tihng he could have said. I was expecting him to say something stupid like alonzee but that was worse. At least the 11th doctor has got a good line now.

@BKole:
Thanks. I can't say I have disliked/hated any of the doctors but it was nice to see a more "action movie" type doctor with Eccleston. Although he had the same intellect and was capable of spouting the same confusing banter, he had a quality that was more macho or heroic than past dotcors (or future doctors for that matter).
I would prefer a break from the atypical nerdy or awkward doctor and get a chance to see a real ladies man or a really physical doctor that can back up his mind with some fist pounding.
When the series first aired on Sci-Fi I thought there was going to be a reimagining (just like eveything else fantasy/sci-fi these days) but they have steered back to the original formula with slightly better special effects (based on the decade). Would be nice to see a little more diversion from the original, all though they have done a lot to advance the series canon and incorporate new and interesting ideas with this series.
