New Details on the Scott Snyder & Jim Lee SUPERMAN Series

Find out what the series is called and when it'll come out!

We've known for a while now that the dream team of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee will present a new Superman title, but now we finally have plenty of new information about the upcoming series.

First and foremost, it's going to be called SUPERMAN UNCHAINED (and no, Quentin Tarantino has no connection). We can get our hands on it June 12th-- two days before Man of Steel's release and the same month BATMAN/SUPERMAN will come out! Snyder and Lee spoke with USA Today about the title.

"I know conceptually why he admires Lois Lane, but then when you're writing them and you feel the chemistry between them and it comes to life on the page, it's always these little bursts of surprises that have been a joy to discover with him," Snyder says.
"The energy we're bringing to the story and that 'Hey, we can add new stuff to the canon' kind of attitude will serve us well," Lee says.
No Caption Provided

It looks like we'll get a deeper Clark and Lois connection... but will they actually get together, and what would that mean for Superman's relationship with Wonder Woman over in Geoff Johns' book?

Talk about an amazing 75th anniversary for Kal-El! Man of Steel looks great and now there's two new titles by astonishing teams. So, is this a clear "must buy" for you, Viners?

The title is off putting. I was super stoked when I thought it was Man of Steel.

What a generic name. Man of Steel would have been much more fitting.

I don't think the title is that bad. I actually think it's fitting, considering the image of Superman breaking chain bondage is sort of iconic.

I wouldn't dislike the title if it weren't for the fact that Django Unchained was a thing.

I'm not as big on Snyder as everyone else.

  • The Black Mirror - Fantastic
  • Gates of Gotham - Meh
  • Court of Owls - Great
  • Night of the Owls - Okay
  • Death of the Family - Meh

The order of quality is fantastic, great, okay, meh.

Even though I've only really read Batman stuff from him, I still have my reservations.

Dang, I was hoping for the Man of Steel title. Guess I'll have to wait for the movie and in the Meantime, read John Byrne's series again.

Book stills looks awesome. Title still blows.

What Smash said. Not only that, but I'll take it one step further; I won't be buying this. Put them on goddam Action or Superman main. Pretty simple equation for success. Quit draining people's wallets by making more monthly titles when you already have plenty.

Yeah...they should have called it Man of Steel. That title is so bad in generally, and exceptionally bad considering it's close timing to Django Unchained, that it actually makes me want to read the book less. It's silly that such a thing should matter to me as much as it does, but it does. Seeing as I'm not a huge Superman fan to begin with, and was only interested in this title for the creators involved, I'll definitely be skipping this series in order to save some money for Superman/Batman.

I'm definitely excited for this new book! I hope Scott has one of those big epics planned for Supeman because that would be awesome. Sure I like shorter arcs but I like to have my longer ones too. So I'm really hoping for an epic with no tie ins or crossing over with any other titles. Throne of Atlantis Death of the Family and H'el on Earth have been killing my wallet these last few months.

This title choice is a move i don't really understand. I don't think it's cashing-in on Tarantino's movie, actually it only seems to attract sarcastic remarks and i guess they're deserved. Besides, Superman is such a huge name/franchise it doesn't really need any kind of gimmicks. Besides, the title breaks the pattern they've used so far. Just look at the Bat-titles: Detective Comics (legacy book title), Batman (just the name of the hero) and Batman: the Dark Knight (the hero's most popular nickname). It made perfect sense to go with Action Comics (legacy book), Superman (name), and The Man of Steel (nickname). Also it would have made sense marketing-wise to go that way with a movie coming soon in theatres by the same name which will probably be a huge blockbuster. Strenghten the brand value and cash-in on the hype (just look at what Marvel did attaching Avengers to basically every title which didn't already have this or an X in it). Plus, comics publishers are periodically recycling titles and character names to keep their trademarks safe so going with this Unchained thing is quite puzzling. Let's hope the book is good at least.

Even today I still can't contain my excitement over how awesome this news is! Snyder and Lee make an all star creative team for the title, the direction it seems to be going in is fantastic and the artwork looks simply exceptional. The only problem is that I know they were going for something original but Unchained? Is that the best you can do DC? Ah well the pros outweigh the cons for me. Cannot wait to read this series in June!

'Superman Unchained' sounds corny as hell. Like some sort of extreme 90s leftover.

That being said, even though I don't care much for Jim Lee, Scott Snyder's DC work has been pretty solid so far and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But being good at Batman or Swamp Thing doesn't necessarily equate to writing Superman well (Hi J. Michael!), so I'll remain skeptically optimistic.

Still, this quote from Lee kinda disturbs me a little:

"You have to fight your natural tendency to do what you know or what you've always thought the character to be. We've been pushing the creators to not be beholden to the past conceits and understandings [of Superman]. So we will speak to a new generation of readers."

Man that title is real dumb.

Anyway, I'm definitely excited for this book. I mean, the creative team has definitely sold me on this book. Plus, Dustin Nguyen is doing the backups (something not mentioned above) which sells me on it even more.

That said, literally every single Snyder comic that I've read has, at its core, been a horror comic. All of his Batman stuff has been very horror influenced, American Vampire and Severed are both straight up horror books, as is his upcoming mini-series The Wake. A horror tinged take on Superman could be interesting, but ultimately I think it's a poor fit for the character. Either we'll get to see Snyder flex some other writing muscles with this series or hopefully he'll find a way to make a horror story work for the man of steel.

Either way, I'm definitely looking forward to this book, but I've still got some mild reservations. I love a good horror story and I've quite enjoyed most all of Snyder's writing so far, I just hope he maintains the streak.

Meh, superman and lois has become obsolete. Or atleast for a while. C'mon they've been together for a long time so can't we just chill on the fate of their romance? For me it's just soon. Can we just change things from the same thing over and over again to something completely different?

Damn it why did you have to remind me of JMS and Grounded? Can't believe I wasted my time reviewing that series now. In fairness, the first 3 issues of JMS' run, particularly 701 and that suicide scene were good. Then **** went down and Robinson didn't manage to clear up the mess left behind. JMS should have stayed with Marvel in hindsight, he writes those characters better than he does the DC ones.

@SmashBrawler: So are you saying that if Black Cat knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man, she wouldn't be more attracted to Peter? Lois can like both, but like one more than the other. And she can't marry Superman, but she can marry Clark Kent.

The title is brutally stupid, but a bad title does not a story ruin. This is Jim Lee and Snyder. It doesn't get better than this. Unless Morrison decides to join this orgy of Superman greatness.
