New Captain America Revealed

Find out who will carry the shield next.

If you've been reading the current CAPTAIN AMERICA by Rick Remender, you're aware things aren't going too well for Steve Rogers. With the Super Soldier Serum no longer keeping him young, his future as Captain America is questionable. We've known a new Cap was coming. Marvel has announced the identity of the next Captain America.

No Caption Provided

Get ready for Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon, to take on the mantle of Captain America.

No Caption Provided

“This is it,” says Remender of the culmination of two years of storytelling in CAPTAIN AMERICA and the dawning of ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA. “This is the fireworks factory we’re arriving at, and now everything’s going to blow up and be very pretty and exciting to look at. It leads into an evolution of Steve Rogers’ character that I had very early when I was given the job. I think that it’s important with these stories to do things that are natural and make sense and have an inherent logic to the universe, but are also constantly shifting and exciting, keeping the drama high. In order to do that it really comes down to creating new dynamics.

“I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.”

Stay tuned for an ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 by Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen.

You know what would be pretty cool? If they called him American Eagle or something to mesh his new look with his old identity. I feel like Cap will always be Steve Rogers to me and a majority of the comic reading community

I completely disagree, outrage I think is more about the change itself rather what the change specifically is. If some new random dude and not a chick became thor people would still be upset.

it might be good but why not give him a full mask. A on the head covering his head/hair. As Steve/Bucky/Burnside/Punisher got.

I want the same outfit as Cap just worn by Sam.

And to the other guy that's making it about race, that's not my issue. I like Samuel Jackson, but not for Nick Fury. And I like Laurence Fishburn as well, but not as Perry White. It's an insult to people who hold these characters dear to their heart and have shared a great portion of their childhood and adult life reading them.

People don't care that Al Simmons is black, but if Luke Cage was turned white there would be a fierce back lash.

But you just spend half your post demonstrating backlash for two white characters turned black...

It's not about race with me. Marvel is writing out Nick Fury and replacing him with a black man just to please a certain group. What about the fans who love Nick fury just the way he is ? So screw you to the life long fans who have made the company a success? And I'm not white just so you know and my son is mixed.

And like I said before if this was Luke Cage being changed into a white guy just so say Tom Cruise could play him, there would be an out cry.

And now Thor is "Unworthy" of Mjolnir ? Why? To bring in more female readers. I feel it's cheap and a slap in the face of true fans. And yes I'm well aware that it's only temporary, but a slap is still a slap. They could easily showcase the likes of Storm with top notch art and a great story teller to pull in females, they don't have to go this rout and segregate a large portion of long time fans just to please the few girls who they do bring in.

For the record, Sam has been Cap before. It was only for one issue of Sentinels of Liberty (#9) in 1999, but he has done it.

it wasn't to please black people. to please the fans of Ultimate comics. he was the most popular creation coming out of the Ultimate comics.

there has been black/spanish/asian characters that turned white and no one complains. no bats an eye. Luke Cage might be hard to swallow once you look how he was created. with a blaxploitation vibe but it would mostly go on without a hitch in the comic and by fans like you.

Marvel does know Avengers 2 comes out in May right?

of course, these changes aren't permanent. Change the characters for a while, drum up controversy and sells and then bring back the original when the movie comes out to entice the old and new readers.

Yep it's official, Marvel is literally becoming too dumb, trite and unoriginal for my tastes. I may really have issues with the slapped on reboot/retcon but at least there are still titles that I like at DC. Now

  • Spider-Man's in the hands of mad eye Slott who I don't trust to write the character well.
  • Falcon is Captain America which demeans his role as his own character at the end of the day. But removing Captain America again has just been a dumb move on Remander's part.
  • Thor is being replaced by a woman who's now the only person to call Thor. Not that Thor isn't who the character is and that the woman will be remembered in time as the female equivalent of Eric Masterson but you know, we gotta look like we approve of gender equality -_-
  • Iron Man is getting a freakin' Superior Spider-Man treatment which is just what the character needs.
  • And The Avengers are being turned into a bunch of heroes I don't even recognise anymore.
  • Plus the FF is being torn apart for no good reason.

Yep I'd say this has pushed me straight into the arms of DC over Marvel. And when the continuity butchering New 52 is more appealing than what Marvel are doing, I think that says a lot about Marvel's decision making.

Wait what happened to iron man? Do we know who's replacing him?

@verotikryptonite: You didn't get my point. I never said it wasn't a stunt. I said it was a perfectly logical stunt for a company like Marvel, which is part of an industry that aims to get new readers as time goes by because comic books are supposedly aimed at younger audiences, and in a time where the industry is at disadvantage with new technologies and a "minimal span of attention" mentality, they have to look fresh. This (and the new #1s) is one way to go about it, whether we like it or not. I understand the feeling of being swept aside, but it has nothing to do with how their business is run. They're not going about basing their job on people swearing them off on the Internet (well, most of them anyway), but on the people who will buy their stuff.

As for why this sort of changes are good for the "moral" prospect of comics, I already explained myself above. Nick Fury Jr... yeah that was poorly executed. Like I said, change doesn't make up for storytelling. But it doesn't "kill" it either.

Also, there was outcry when Kingpin was a black guy on Daredevil. It goes both ways.

Ok, first, let's deal with something.

The argument of "It's too P.C.!", "No, it's not!" Needs to STOP. STOP. STOP.

Go back further. What's actually wrong with political correctness? Not what you THINK it means, but what it actually means. It means, "Hey, those words you say so carelesssly, or those things you do? Maybe stop and think about if they'd genuinely and legitimately offend a swathe of people before acting upon using them, yes?" That's political correctness.

Do people misuse it? Yes. Do people misunderstand what it means? Evidently, yes. However, the above is all it means.

"I used to call gay people f***ots all the time. I never meant anything bad by it. You can't say ANYTHING now." No, you shouldn't be saying or doing certain things anyway. At its absolute WORST? P.C. is instituationalised politenesss. End of story. Get OVER it.

It's not pandering, is it? How many black superheroes are there? Women in the forefront? Gays? Trans? Bi? Exactly. It's making things reflective.

Before I get to the replies, I wanna say this. You love Steve Rogers so much? Think of this. You know who would be directly opposed to all of your negative, discriminatory comments? Steve Rogers. He would love Sam as Cap. He would respect ANYONE worthy enough to hold Mjolnir. Why can't you?

I think this past few days has been infuriating for comic readers*.

*Racists and sexists. Fixed for you.

How many of you complained when Bucky was Cap, or when everyone in the Noah movie was white? Most of the criticisms for this move are one giant, "I'm not racist/sexist, but..."

Stop it.

This f#cking sucks.

Why don't they make a white Black Panther? A female Captain America, a chinese Batman? etc?

I guess we need every character to have at least 8 different copies.

Because Black Panther is an African king from a tribe of natives to the continent. Captain America is the title of a courageous man from New York who happened to volunteer. Now, which of those scenarios could've been ANY ethnicity? Cap. He could've been a man, woman, or any ethnicity.

Black Panther being a black man is tied to his origin. Captain America's isn't.

Also, what's wrong with you? "What's next? A FEMALE Captain America? A GAY *Character*?" Why would this be a terrible thing? Why is being a female, or gay, or anything other than white, damning to you?

You know what? You people sit there and act like you can't criticise these changes without seeming racist or sexist. Maybe it's because that's the type of opinion you hold.

I have never had to worry or complain that something I've said would be taken as racist or sexist or discriminatory. You know why? Because I've literally never said anything that could be considered, legitimately, racist, sexist or discriminatory.

If you're worried your shock and outrage over this might be seen as discrimination, it's probably because it is discrimination. Oh, but you're not "like that"! Right? Knock it off.

"We need to have eight different versions." As opposed to one white version of most of the characters? Go outside. Do you see constant white people or a mix? Why should fiction be ANY different?

Sam has been a hero for 45 years. No formal military training but has run a department in SHEILD. He could fill the Captain America shoes. Bucky wasn't thought of since the 60's but came back able to fill Cap's void with rounding applause.

your argument made me say such things. In movies/comics, characters of another race has frequently been changed into white characters and you didn't acknowledge or seem to know. But the change of a white character into black stuck out to you. Thor has been unworthy before and his power lost. The power going to a female is now a problem with you and others.

Tony isn't being replaced. Instead, and I quote, "Like the Superior Spider-Man, Superior Iron Man is a character that’s hard to root for," Alonso told EW. "The newly-transformed Superior Iron Man has very ambitious plans for the city that some of its residents embrace, but not all." So basically he's going to go back to acting like he did in Civil War.

Well I hate to say it, but most of you complaining about the changes are just getting old. My dad used to tell me he stopped reading comics because they "changed the X-Men and the Avengers to teams he no longer recognized". And now, thanks to these changes with the New 52 and Marvel, I'm finally getting what he meant. I'll give Thor, Superior Iron Man, and Captain Falcon a shot, but I'm sure i won't like the change. Guess I'm getting old... v.v

The power going to a female is now a problem with you and others.

a fan like you...hmm

Give me one example of a black/hispanic or asian becoming white in comics.

I really dislike when creative changes become obvious it distracts from the overall product, like when you know a storyline in wrestling is fake or how a magic trick is done...just ruins the moment for me.

So these ' changes' are coming off gimmicky, like the Powers that be need to shake things up for their shareholders or something that demanded these wholesale moves....ugh

That being said, I think Falcon should be fun, as I think he really isn't trying to BE Captain America, but blend his style into his own and be the best of both heroes in the process. So that, Stuart Immonen on the art and we know CAP will be back eventually, this should be pretty fun to read.

That Superior Iron Man and the new Avengers crew business from that Entertainment Weekly article.....Not so sure about yet....

@teerack: to clarify, are you mad that they're pushing Scott over Hank or that they're pushing him as Ant-Man?

Both? There is an Ant-Man movie coming out that probably won't star Hank Pym as Ant-Man and now in the comics the only Ant-Man they care about is Scott probably because of it. It's a shame that Marvel has just given up on one of their founding avengers members without even really trying to make him popular by giving him his own solo ongoing series. It's like they just totally forgot how popular Hank was during Dark Reign when he was the leader of the Avengers. It's not like everyone hates him they just lack exposure to him.

Congrats sam wilson for taking the mantle,I feel like he deserves the chance to prove hes a true leader, and even though a solo series as the falcon is much deserved for him, this is just as good for him as Captain America is awesome, gotta see what direction they take him

"THIS IS AN OUTRAGE FOR NO REASONS I CAN GIVE THAT MAKE SENSE!"

"Things like this never last."

Why is it an outrage then? You know it'll change back eventually. Comics are the most imaginative, creative medium and yet...they cough up some of the dumbest people.

Feels pointless considering the Bucky Barnes tenure as Captain America.

In Daredevil and in Avengers A.I. it started to label Hank as Ant-Man and he went back to using his Helmet when he shrunk. I had thought Marvel was going to do the right thing, but Hank wasn't even in Infinity, Original Sin, and looking at all of the images of Axis he probably wont be in Axis either. They just really don't care about him anymore clearly. If you go back through the major marvel events they all skip over Hank with the exception being Fear Its Self where they added in him showing up too late to help. I thought AoU was Marvel finally trying to address their lack of trying with Hank but Hank turned out to hardly be in AoU as well. Then when you listen to them talk at panels when people ask things like "Why isn't Hank Pym anywhere in marvel now?..." They're response is "Oh he's hanging out with Daredevil and building some tech for Cap" Like they seriously believe that, that's good enough and Hank doesn't need to be a leader character. Sorry I'm ranting haha I like Scott Lang, but honestly if they were going to push Hank out of the spot light to give his fame to someone else I would rather it be Eric.

It's not pandering, is it? How many black superheroes are there? Women in the forefront? Gays? Trans? Bi? Exactly. It's making things reflective.

It is pandering though because by doing this your just giving people a reason to spread hate towards these minoritys that deserve better icon representations than just 'black captain america' 'female thor' etc because people wont see the character themselves they will just see them as a cheap imitation of the person their based of off. If you want you want more black superheroes, female superheroes etc then you go out and buy comics with female superheroes or black superheroes or whatever and marvel will see that the particular character is profitable and will focus more time and resources on developing that character as a customer we have that kind of power but by simply rehashing beloved characters your pushing more negativity towards that minority by tearing fans of the original from the character they have grown to know and love its not about the suit or the tittle its about the man behind the mask you cant just shoe horn in a new version of a popular character and expect fans to instantly fall in love with them.

They could easily showcase the likes of Storm with top notch art and a great story teller to pull in females, they don't have to go this rout and segregate a large portion of long time fans just to please the few girls who they do bring in.

it wasn't to please black people. to please the fans of Ultimate comics. he was the most popular creation coming out of the Ultimate comics.

there has been black/spanish/asian characters that turned white and no one complains. no bats an eye. Luke Cage might be hard to swallow once you look how he was created. with a blaxploitation vibe but it would mostly go on without a hitch in the comic and by fans like you.

hasn't thor been unworthy before? sam is a black guy its a slap. but everyone loves bucky as cap...i hate saying it but I think some of you are just racist.

Onyx race wasn't changed. She was just wearing face paint. Something they stopped using because there was outcry over from a few people misunderstanding and spreading the belief to the many non readers.

Which makes your "you read comics? you gotta know this stuff" comment funny.

@winter_kills: This really is something unthinkable. After the succesfull "Superior Spider-man" experiment, Marvel decided to do this trick with-

Wolverine

Thor

Captain America.

Whose next? Hulk!?

I wouldn't be surprised. I actually said yesterday that all Marvel needed to do was to something to Iron Man to complete the trifecta. They've already f***ed up the other two members of the big three.

avengers now

That looks and sound like absolute grade A horse shite. Guess I will be dropping every single book on that list of crapola. WTF! Who ever OK'ed all this crap should get a bullet in his head. The only way I read any of that crap is if Bucky went all Winter soldior and indeed put a bullet in the mouth of every single one of those people in the bottom row. And they each die horribly at that. First Marvel let's Slott destroy Spiderman. Then they let that has been Waid write that snooze fest run on Hulk. Now lets trash the Avengers with a two year crap run. Whats up with the Marvel right now ? I swear a big time DC fan is in charge of Marvel and is trolling Marvel fan's as hard as possible.

Haha I almost believe that is a possibility! DC guy infiltrating & destroying from within- I'd almost believe that if DC wasn't so f***ed up themselves. I like what you said about Bucky though. He's the best friggin' thing in that line-up. The Winter Soldier is the ONLY saving grace for me at Marvel right now. Marvel sh*t all over everything else I love.

@bigswarz: Like I said Bucky is the obvious and natural succesor to Captain America. Falcon is 2nd. I think the big reason that people are having any problems with this is that its happening at the same time as the female Thor thing. It looks more like a publicity stunt than actual character progression. If this had happened a few months ago no one wouldve cared. Oh and I actually do think a few people had problems with Bucky becoming Cap.

no problem. we all need a good rant every now and then. I know its personal opinion but ive never been able to forgive O'grady for what he pulled in Avengers:The Initiative. Did you hear the rumor that Yellowjacket was secretly going to be the villain in the Ant-man movie?
