Morrison Leaving ACTION COMICS with Issue #16

The writer who knows the ins and outs of Superman like the back of his hand is leaving the ongoing series soon.

For fans of Grant Morrison and his work on ACTION COMICS, today marks a sad day. Morrison will be leaving the series after issue #16.

There is but one fitting reaction:

No Caption Provided

During an extensive interview with Comic Book Resources to discuss his upcoming series at Image called HAPPY!, and other such things like MorrisonCon, Morrison dropped the bomb that he would be stepping away from ongoing superhero books for the time being, leaving ACTION COMICS at issue #16 and BATMAN INCORPORATED at issue #12, which we assume is the natural end to his 7+ year Batman saga.

Here’s the official word from Morrison:

The 'Action Comics' run concludes with issue #16, 'Batman Incorporated' wraps up my take with issue #12, and after that I don’t have any plans for monthly superhero books for a while. 'Multiversity' is eight issues and I’m 30-odd pages into a Wonder Woman project but those are finite stories.

While it’s sad to see Morrison go, especially when it seems his run on Action was just starting to heat up, the prospect of a Wonder Woman limited series does pique our interest. And then there is MULTIVERSITY, which has become this elusive phantom of DC’s portfolio in recent years. Hopefully we finally see that series’ release soon rather than later.

What’s your take on Morrison stepping down from ACTION COMICS? Are you sad, or excited to see some fresh blood take on the Man of Steel? Sound off below!

I personally hope that Batman Inc. is done after Morrison leaves. I'm loving what Snyder is doing on BATMAN, and now that Gregg Hurwitz is on B:TDK I have two Batman books that I can rely on to give me great stories (I hate Damien, so I have zero interest in B&R). I've never read anything by Jonathan Layman, but I'm willing to give his TEC book a chance at first. If I like it, I'll pick it up. But I have not been a fan of INC for a long time, and the idea of a Batman corp still repulses me. Bruce is the one and only Batman, and he belongs in Gotham rather than traveling around the world and recruiting other bat-men.

As far as ACTION goes, I just want to get back to fun, straight-forward Superman stories. If he werent' so busy, I'd say get Geoff Johns on the book as I love his Superman work. But I think Johns is already stretched thin enough as it is, so let another writer who has some great original ideas come onto the book. I know personally I'm done with the t-shirts and jeans Superman, and want to move further into the elements of the Superman mythos we're all familiar with, plus start developing Clark's relationship with Lois Lane. She's been horribly sidelined in the New 52 so far, and I hope that either Scott Lobdell or a new writer on ACTION fixes that. No more weirdness, just pure Superman fun!

I'll be sad to see him go but the fact that Batman Inc. has an ending in sight and Morrison can focus more on creator owned stuff like We3, Seaguy, and Joe the Barbarian is good news.

Yes. Thank you. I wish he had made this decision before he decided to craft poorly written Batman stories for seven years. I hope that DC gives Batman Inc to someone who can actually write Batman.

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't been the biggest fan of Morrison's work. Sure he's a great writer, and every time I say he's okay the Morrison fans come out of the wood works with pitchforks and torches exclaiming: "YOU MUST READ IT AGAIN! READ IT UNTIL YOU LIKE IT!" His Action comics run though, has not been the best for me. I have honestly enjoyed Superman more than I have action comics. To me Morrison has always been a better read if you're reading his work in one collected volume rather than the monthly bite sized chunks that comics are. Like All-Star Superman for example. I didn't like it at first, but each time I read it, it got better and better. I've read both Hardcover collections at least three to four times now.

Not the end of the world. Morrison is great, but IMHO Action has been getting progressively worse with each new issue since 8.

It's a bummer to see Morrison go... I hope they can get someone good for the role in to replace him.

Well, that sucks but it really isn't surprising is it? Did we really believe he would remain committed to a monthly book? The top talent in this biz is always moving on to the next project. Frankly, who can blame them.

Although I enjoyed his other Superman projects, I think this run in Action comics was not the best. There were a lot of promises made on the onset of this relaunch, that were never delivered.

Also his approach to what I would call - non-linear storytelling, I found rather confusing. Sometimes I would start reading and wonder "did I miss an issue?"

There is no doubt that Morrison can craft a great story and his approach to it is interesting. But for a monthly book, I prefer a more traditional approach.

Too bad, Superman certainly deserves to have a great storyteller at it's helm. It is a shame that it never materializes.

Honestly I think Synder could do some awesome Superman stories with the likes of Toyman, Ultra-Humanite, & Parasite. I mean theae guys would totally fit his writing style, and plus I want to see the return of the Ultra-Humanite badly. he was Superman's first actual supervillain he fought, and a man who trades bodies could make for some serious dark stories. Superman himself doesn't have to be dark but it doesn't mean he can't delve into the setting every once in awhile. I don;t believe Parasite or Toyman need an explanation do you?

The hell do you mean by that?!

@Thorion88: See if Snyder were to do dark Superman stories, I'd be skeptical. Superman is not a dark character. Sure he can venture into mature territory but after all that's been done to Superman, putting Superman in a dark story nowadays wouldn't be fitting IMO.

@SandMan_: I know you think Snyder would be a good thing for Superman but I have to say he has a busy writing schedule. Batman, Swamp Thing and American Vampire are all projects that are taking up a lot of time. I don't know what's going on in AM but in Batman, he's working on a Joker story which I'm really excited for and in Swamp Thing, he's working on a crossover with Animal Man dealing with the Rot. Adding Action Comics to the mix would be way too much for Snyder.

@Lvenger: Superman can still have Serious written stories...

Honestly if characters like Parasite, Toyman, or Ultra-Humanite aren't written as dark characters then they can very easily come off as campy. Bizarro maybe a good fit as well, the silent Frankenstein-like Bizarro in Byrne's run could be re-imagined for Scott synder as well. Plus After a Ultra-Humanite & Superman confrontation happens you could ends it with UH finding Titanio's albino ape body and him placing his mind into it. Since Titanio is dead currently in the nu52, and could give a good reason for UH's albino ape look he's most known for, come into play.

Actually fun thinking about some possibilities.

@Thorion88: Those are good ideas I have to say. But Snyder is a dark writer. That's the style his stories are best at. I'm not sure if that style is applicable to Superman's world.

@SandMan_: I know. But you never know, it could be possible.

@Lvenger: I think ti could work as long as Superman is written as the light to that dark character or setting he's facing. Like I said I really want to see a good Ultra-Humanite introduction into the DCnU. Especially given that he is known to steal bodies, he could end up being a good foil for Superman if done right. I think my ideas are a good start.

Parasite after thinking about it, i think rather than dark he should try to go for a creepy factor, sure his powers can be used for a dark setting but I think he would work better as a skin crawling character. Someone if you read about just gives you a creepy vibe lol.

@SandMan_: True there is that.

@Thorion88: I like your Parasite idea. He would be suited to a skin crawling role I have to say.
