More Avengers Vs. X-Men Event Reveals

The "Marvel Architects" divulge more information regarding the upcoming big event at Marvel Comics.

Yesterday Marvel announced that the next big event to take hold of the Marvel Universe will pit the Avengers against the X-Men in a major battle. The event will not only bring Marvel's two biggest franchises together, but it will showcase the return of the Phoenix Force to the Marvel Universe. Marvel got their "architects" together to discuss the upcoming story and to answer many questions ranging from what the connection between X-Sanction to Avengers vs. X-Men will be, to whether one of these groups will actually lose the battle.

No Caption Provided

Avengers writer Brian Michael Bendis was quick to compare the upcoming event to Civil War in that the reader will have the opportunity to choose between the two sides, and that one of the two groups will ultimately lose.

There's never been an Avengers vs. X-Men story. We as creators are scared of it; we're nervous...and like Civil War there will be a winner and there will be a loser. The heroes are being tested. How is the world seeing the Avengers? It takes a toll on society and the Avengers. [This event will] connect what's been happening with the Avengers, with the X-Men and what's been going on with Scarlet Witch in Children's Crusade.

Current Wolverine writer and fellow "Marvel Architect" Jason Aaron divulged that Hope will take center stage in the event and that her role as the "Mutant Messiah" will come into play, as well.

== TEASER ==
We will see the X-Men pushed to their limits like never before. The mutants have been fighting against extinction. Then they got a miracle in the birth of Hope. She is the "Mutant Messiah." Without her mutants would be falling into non-existence. Since SCHISM, Cyclops had a falling out with Wolverine, he had to become harder, he's still fighting for survival and has to protect this little girl; this Messiah. Wolverine is also in an interesting place, going into this...we're trying to deal with the Phoenix in a way that is accessible. Youd don't have to have read the Dark Phoenix Saga. This is a new reader friendly take on the Phoenix.

The writers also implied that the Phoenix Force will be searching for a new host and that this host will have "red hair and green eyes." Hope, perhaps? The event will also divulge Hope's connection to Jean Grey and Scarlet Witch. What could that mean?

No Caption Provided

Fans who have always wanted to see Captain America and Cyclops throw down will be happy to hear that this battle will indeed take place, and will likely be written by Matt Fraction. The writer will be penning a "strategic battle between Cyclops and Captain America" that is "definitely interesting."

Writing the strategic battle between Cyclops and Captain America is definitely interesting. I love Hope and love writing her, writing Hope at her best is definitely exciting. And the opportunity to write Scarlet Witch is exciting. A new armor for Iron Man...putting Iron Man in this new suit is exciting. And Thor is going to be involved in some "cosmic shenanigans."

Writer Ed Brubaker also discussed the strategies that the two leaders must employ in order to win and stated that they may have more in common than either of them thinks.

Cap and Cyclops and similar characters in that they are both patriotic characters that will do what it takes to get the job done. I think Cyclops is definitely more willing to do what it takes than Captain America.

The creative team for this big event also expressed that the upcoming X-Sanction will serve as a sort of a prelude to Avengers vs. X-Men, which will officially hit stores with issue zero in February. What do you think of the reveals? Are you looking forward to the event? How do you think Hope will factor into the story? What would you like to see happen?

Friggin Fraction....
Also Marvel Architects is such a stupid, conceited name. These guys are full of themselves and the only thing they will succeed in building is contempt for their work.

on another note: i hate hearing "marvel architects" almost as bad as hearing "marvel's young guns". come on... most of these guys havent architected anything more than stories so bad id rather wipe my butt with the pages. make it an art book with no script and i bet it would be better. and if it is 12 issues over 6 weeks, why so many artists? it really did not go over well with schism.

Ugh, all of you make such good points, & I agree that the "architects" might wanna back off a lil from all this show boating. It seems now all you need to get a job at Marvel is to craft a story that's a "Ground-breaking, never before seen, pivotal, unforgettable, game changer that will change EVERYTHING for EVERYONE FOREVER." Yea, I call it every comic I read from Marvel.. They need to chill, I miss the old Civil War days when I first got into Marvel. Then who ever in charge saw the sales report I'm sure, thus the death of decent "Events".. it's bitter sweet for me. The Dark Reign era was the last decent era of Marvel stories for me, & Thanos Imperative :3

But I digress, we shall see how this plays out & how it will have "lasting effects" for our heroes.

I hate to post spoilers but thor dies and revives 5 times in this story line. Oh and Wolverine fights for both sides and the surprise third faction (a team of 6 Wolverines!) More is always better, right?

I think that ultimately the Avengers will win out. Marvel's not gonna let their premier team get scrubbed just as their movie is hitting theaters.

I would not call the Avengers Marvels premier team, the X-Men are. I am concerned that with an Avenger movie coming next year, I wonder if the deck is already stacked against the X-Men. I don't quite see Marvel allowing the team they will be in heavy promotion mode at the time this story hits the shelves loosing a battle between superteams. I do hope that Wolverine, Beast and Storm are forced to make the "Its us or them" decision and end this Avengers using X-Men to fill out their rosters. X-Men have always been the outsiders on the fringes while the Avengers are the more typical super-hero team.

neither team will 'win" it's heroes vs heroes, it ends like always, with a stalemate that leaves the audience dissatisfied, but otherwise happy that their favorites didn't get owned.

Having said that, if i had to choose a side, it would be the Avengers, between Emma Frost's bi*chyness and Cyclop's douchebaggery, i can't handle the x men anymore

@WarMachineMarkV: Big Trouble in Little China...very obscure reference. I'll give you your cookie back just for the arcane and strangely apropos reference.

FWIW, I too am sick of all these "big events." I started with X-men back in the mid-1980s when Claremont and Silvestri were at the helm. And with the exception of the launch of Uncanny X-men and X-men in the 90s (Gold and Blue teams) and the early issues of Astonishing X-men, I haven't seen anything to really compare with the comics I read back in the 80s when X-Men just had good stories and the rare big event like Fall of the Mutants and Inferno. And I can say, with all the X-men related titles, then as well as today, I appreciated that for the most part the X-men stayed out of the rest of the Marvel Universe. Now...well...I see glimmers of good work here and there (like X-Force as a whole). This is all to say I'm not really keyed up for AvsX. It seems to me like the writers are running out of original ideas and decided they would just have two groups of good guys fight it out. with the return of the Phoenix force trown in to make it seem important.

And while I like the idea of Schism, I hate (or love to hate) Cyclops' X-Men. So while I'm naturally inclined to root for the mutants, I kinda want Cyclops to have his ass handed to him. He really needs to be cut down in his ego. Still, if I'm speaking objectively, the powerhouse "X-termination" team Cyclops has gathered has a lot more power than Avengers and should be able to squash the Avengers--both..er..all three teams--especially if you include all the mutants on Utopia.

About the Phoenix' return, it was bound to happen. I'm curious which green-eyed girl the Phoenix will go to. There have already been several former hosts who could be contenders for a new host--Jean Grey (dead, but could be resurrected), Rachel Grey, the Cuckoos, and then there's Hope. I hae no idea what her connection is between Jean and wanda, but I sure hope (haha) it doesn't turn out that she is their "love child" or Wanda's solution all along or Jean Grey reincarnated, or some crap like that. I liked Hope as an individual character, bac when she had a separate charcter, but hate the Generation Hope rag. I hope they all get killed. Whoever came up with the five Lights should be shot, or at least fired. Compared to Young X-Men, and to a lesser extent Generation Next, and New Mutants, the five Lights are B or C-grade characters in terms of powers and personalities. i'll root for Jean's return, Hope discovering that she really isn't a messiah but just a kid, and Rachel getting the Phoenix force again, though I know the latter is not going to happen. It's all about the little "Mutant Messiah."...and Wanda, who is also "back from the dead." Maybe Wanda is the next Phoenix? That would be pretty lame.

1- Between the large number of green eyed girls, add in the discussion about Korvus sword with the connection to the Phoenix, it strangely fits.

2 - I have been reading as long as you have, and if I had to choose between then and now, I would tend to agree with you. The X-writers of this generation have a lot of talent and have done some real good work, but they are so inconsistent its maddening. They both have different strengths and if you could pull the best from both the titles would be epic IMO.

3 - Recently Marvel has had a trend of propping up characters, writing them out of character, making them look terrible, then letting them fall hard (Tony Stark, Thor, Hulk, etc), maybe Cyclops escapes the trend.

4 - I agree if Marvel only uses the set rosters with no backup, the Avengers should get their a$$es handed to them. No way am I buying that cap is that arrogant or stupid.

5 - Hope and everything associated with her has just been lame, she is supposed to be the most important thing in the world and they have not made me care about her or her Low-Lights at all. I have no expectations that the explaination will be any good, I'll just be happy its over.

I don't understand. I thought that it was established that Jean was one with the Phoenix Force. They became one in the same because her soul was most similar to the Phoenix. So, Hope is possibly a remnant or result of the Scarlet Witch's House of M reality hex. Maybe a piece of Jean's soul or Phoenix fragment was altered by the hex and became Hope (like how she used fragments of Mephisto's soul to create her children) and the Phoenix has come back to collect its host.

Speculation is fun.

I agree, no Hope-is-Jean-Reborn @$#%. I love the event concept, but they had better make this a 12 or 16 issue series. I don't want 5 Avengers going up against 16 X-Men, half of whom will be cameos only. Heck, I'd make it a year long struggle! Something BETTER they could write than X-men versus Avengers?! Please give it the space it's worth. Civil War had too many pages devoted to reporters and minor characters and not enough main on main action - uh, you know what I mean... Hulk vs. Juggernaut, Thor vs. Magneto (is Mjolnir ferrous at all, or purely mystical?), Captain America vs. Cyclops, Iron Man vs. Colossus - hey, Storm & Emma vs. Thor, Spidey teaming with Kitty Pryde (in honor of their Ultimate universe shared time together)...

GIVE IT TO US NOW!

X-men vs Avengers. This would be interesting. I hope they don't follow the Civil War route and make someone out of character and a complete douchebag like they did with Tony Stark. If they do that to anyone it would most likely be Cyclops. He is already turning into a douchebag.

What if the Scarlet Witch will get the phoenix force? She will then be the most powerfull (and dangerous) person alive!

I would like to see the x-men lose and put away in some sort of prison, maybe even start something similar as the Days of future past storyline, or maybe Bishops future (so he would be right, instead of Cable and Cyclops) We could have some great stories about mutants (Cyclops side) living in prison before they break out en go underground (return to australia perhaps??)

Wolverine could return to the school after the Avengers/X-men fight because he's an avenger but under strict supervision, which bothers him tremendously and then he breaks out cyclops and his x-men.

Or something like that, i want some ACTION people not a bunch of mutants sitting on a rock in the pacific feeling sorry for themselves, i like them on the run, being hunted and feared.

As much as you all whine about events and whatnot, none of you can admit that this event isn't actually needed. The story of Scarlet Witch and mutants being depowered has been floating about since House of M. Jean's death in New X-Men, Phoenix Endsong, the hints given in Uncanny X-Men, Hope, Children's Crusade, Cable's sacrifice, Schism... they've all been building towards this. So don't try and say that they're doing another event for the sake of it. This story clearly is needed to be told. I am very much looking forward to it.

- Not that he needs to as he is still way to powerful and if they fight one on one Tony has about no chance of winning outside of some prepared miracle.

@WarMachineMarkV: thanks dude, I figured marvel had covered that before. I'm not the most comic savvy guy around, what is the fugazi comic book explanation?

- They never really gave a detailed reason (as usual) but from what I have gathered over the past 25 years, this is my best educated guess:

1 - Over the years Tony has replaced the basic iron and other metals with complex alloys and non metals (carbon nanotubes, etc) that Magneto could no longer manipulate at will. In these same encounters he never even bothered to use an EMP because in most cases it is shown to be ineffective nowadays. This changes depending on the writer, I'm just going by the most common interpretation.

2 - The armor itself is reinforced by force fields both inside and outside the armor, this has made it immune to the Mandarin's matter rearranger and disintegrator ring. Shielding that protects the armor at a molecular level would also help against Magneto to some degree.

3 - The Iron Man armor has been shown to be able to absorb and disrupt energy attacks, the suit may be able to disrupt the magnetic field around him enough to also hamper Magneto in attacks directed against him.

- Please do not take this as canon, with the lack of consistency I don't think anyone could make an absolute case (even within Marvel)

I have an Idea, why don't The Avengers and The X-Men fight evil? Would that be too cliche?
