Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Causes Alarm on the Internet

With Michael Bay's announcement he'll be the new producer of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fans are skeptical, for good reason.

If you haven't heard the news as of yet, Michael Bay has jumped onto the upcoming Teenager Mutant Ninja Turtles film, set to be released the the end of 2013, as producer. Stuff We Like has the official video of said announcement. Here's the direct quote from Bay about what he wants to do with this ever-expanding franchise:

"When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

No Caption Provided

The first word anyone pays attention to is the word "alien." The Ninja Turtles have never been alien, and as soon as you throw that word into the mix, it's going to cause a heap of trouble. As the news traveled, the complaints about Bay's alien direction came through the intrawebs faster than you can say "total reboot." One of the most interesting complaints came from Robbie Rist who was the voice of Michelangelo in the first set of TMNT films. TMZ reported on a letter he wrote to Bay:

"You probably don't know me but I did some voice work on the first set of movies that you are starting to talk about sodomizing."Rist added, "I know believing in mutated talking turtles is kinda silly to begin with but am I supposed to be led to believe there are ninjas from another planet?"

Obviously, Rist feels incredibly passionate about the project, and even though his work on the the movies was brief, he feels this may be a mistake. Aside from Rist, many people on the internet are clamoring, including many comic book creators, especially on twitter.

[Nightwing Writer Kyle Higgins] I respect Michael Bay's ability to get the same looking movie made over and over (how does he do it!) but this Turtles move goes too far

[Chew Artist Rob Guillory] Michael Bay is like the Ravishing Rick Rude of film. "All you fat, hairy fanboys take a look at what a real man's about to do to your TMNT!"

[Batgirl Writer Gail Simone] If Michael Bay made an Easy Bake Oven movie, it would be about Jell-o.

Michael Bay fired back at the outrage on his forum Shoot for the Edit.

Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.

No Caption Provided

So far, the best reply to this comes from Jill Pantozzi on her twitter page:

No, Michael Bay, you chill.

Personally, I think that's a pretty darn perfect retort, and there's plenty more like it on twitter. However, it's not just twitter. Every social media site and news site has something to say about this film, and most of it is extremely negative. But why?

Michael Bay's idea, changing the word "mutant" to "alien," completely changes everything about what makes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but again, that all depends on how Bay and his writers put this thing together.

Obviously, they won't be mutants any longer, but why change it?

Why can't they be mutants? Why can't you bring in some super-cool scientific elements into this movie to explain their backstory without relying on the easy "these things are from space?" The idea that there's a mutagen that evolves beings, or even one that kind of splices two species together, seems pretty darn cool to me. In fact, it's much cooler than having people come down in a space ship to hang out on Earth, which we've seen hundreds of times in movies.

They won't be teenagers.

No Caption Provided

Again, this depends on how the film turns out, but if you have these "teenage" aliens come down to Earth, they really won't be what we know as teenagers. Being a teenager is a cultural thing more than anything else. Sure, it's a term that describes anyone between the ages of 13 and 19, but the word "teenager" is so much more than that. It describes a time, in a human's life, when their bodies are developing, and when it comes to humans, an the turtles, it describes attitude, style, and sometimes rising up against authority.

How could an alien race have all these qualities in a teenager? It would be the biggest coincidence in the universe, aside from the fact there is life on other planets that is intelligent, and knows how to speak English.

They won't be ninjas.

Unless they have the art of Ninjitsu on their planet. Most likely, if the film tries to use Ninjitsu in the film, you'll probably get a little story about how they watched the martial art from their planet and decided to practice it and teach it to their people, but that's the quickest and lamest story I could come up with.

The won't be turtles.

They'll be aliens.

TMNT has so many elements of American culture in it, and that's why I am a tad perplexed about this change in the upcoming film. However, a lot of these ideas get thrown out of the window if the aliens are sent here Kal-El style as babies though, and Michael Bay doesn't seem, for me, to be the right fit for the job. TMNT shouldn't be a gigantic, over-the-top, explosiothon. Sure, they'll be out kicking some butt, but TMNT is more than that. While Bay isn't directing, if you check out the films he's produced, most of them are flashy and substance-less. They aren't designed to have lasting appeal. They're designed to make a ton of money quickly, which he is good at.

No Caption Provided

All-in-all, these latest developments about the TMNT movie are disappointing to fans. It's like remaking the Karate Kid, but setting it in China, and Mr. Miyagi is played by a professional stuntman, and they're learning Kung Fu, not Karate.... wait... that happened.

I'd rather see people working on this film that could give TMNT the credit it deserves. Aside from having Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird involved, personally, I'd like to see Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition) on as director, and aside from the obvious Nolan brothers writing it, I think Luc Besson (Unleashed, The Professional, The 5th Element) would by a perfect writer for a film like this.

Well, it's going to happen, and while many are screaming that Bay has murdered their childhood, they only do it because they love TMNT. It is their childhood, and when someone comes on to a film and makes a major change like that, or course they'll be outraged, and there's no reason anyone needs to "chill out." Sure, each incarnation of the turtles had a different take, but as of now, no creator has strained from the original source this much. I guess we'll have to wait and see though.

What do you guys think about this growing development? What creative teams would you like to see on this film?

Honestly, I dont have a problem with them being aliens. I do not like Bay films. He is like Uwe Bolls, only with a bigger budget. His Transformer movies were awful.

& I dont care if one or both of the TMNT creators are involved. George Lucas made a crappy prequel trilogy. Then he started making un-needed, awful edits to the original trilogy.

This is like the Mass Effect controvercy. Only actually relievant.

I think since the original guys Kevin Eastman and Peter are involved, it'll be decent at least if not good/as good as the first two. Someone said the mutagen was alien based in another TMNT topic, so they could use that. I think too many people are jumping the gun though...the movie hasn't even had a teaser or trailer yet, yet people have this judged already...sigh lol.

I'll wait to it actually comes out, watch it to pass judgment. And FTR, First two Transformers weren't that bad, third one was ok....I honestly believe with Transformers, anyone short of Jesus would have the fans bitching for years and crying a river.

All for profit, NOTHING for true turtle fans. Michael Bay will look at this like he does anything else "reinvent the subject, create new fans, and create more profit". This is not a film being made for the love of the turtles, it is being made for the love of an opportunity. NOT doing the fans or the TMNT any justice. NOT paying homage to what we love about them. I fear the worst if someone doesn't do something about this soon. Nothing is staying true in any of these big hollywood reboots. We want to see tribute to the original, done for the real (now adult) audience. The comics were filled with bloody battles, and very few explosions. Lets show the mature side of the turtles and make an honest film about Teenage Mutant Ninja assassins who have been trained to take down the evil ninja assassins known as the foot, who have infiltrated New York city and put it's citizens in great danger. That's a film I, a true and life long turtles fan, would DIE to see. Anyone else with me????

I feel like the TMNT franchise has been slowly being killed over the years as it is. The newest animated TV shows are already murdering our beloved series. The turtles weren't made for tweens. When the first books came out, they were meant for adults. But I guess that won't sell toys.

I'm upset at the way Michael Bay phrased his first statement. They are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where do you see aliens in that title? I'm all for building a richer world and expanding the universe, that's what sequels are supposed to do, build upon what has been done before. Even reboots do that to a certain extent. However the problem is this is Michael Bay we are talking about, the man who has mastered making Junk Food Cinema. TMNT is a property that has a lot of substance to it if you know where to look and I don't think Bay wants to look for that substance, he just wants to give us the candy coating. I don't want the candy coating, I want the center.

Not to credit him to much, but this was actually ruled out long before he came along. It was due to a law being passed, specifically after an accident where a US police officer shot and killed a child playing the game Lazer Tag by accident, that no toy shall bear a resemblance/be a replica of a real life firearm (G1 Megatron was the latter scaled down). Megatron hasn't been portrayed as that gun for years now as a result of the fact that Hasbro, who calls most of the shots as far as this franchise goes, couldn't market his weapon form.

i wouldve bought it for that reason

did dude just call Jackie Chan a professional stuntman? GTFOH.. rilly?.. idunno, this sites gettin worse by the millisecond.

Bur I digress, who gives a Cartmans asscrack if theyre aliens..? Its already inevitable

the ONLY thing in this scenario u should be worried about is Bay being attached to the film &how many countless vapid hip hight &rising slow motion lookin upward off into the distance shots he'll be able to fit in..

But seriously guy, CHILL.. i got this..lol Everyones pissed at the premise but no ones got any alternative ideas up for spectrum why?

tut tut NO IMAGINATION is why =_-

in the last 5mins i've already worked out a solution to Michael "Destroyer of Dreams" Bays childhood memory intervention..

Bay i'll see ur basic shock & awe alien origin

&raise u an intricate plot with ship crash landing on earth with them as babies.. members of a race of highly intelligent advanced reptile/anthropomorphoids their parents dying in the crash them gettin found by a Japanese ex pat Samurai/Ninja/Ronin on the run who gets accidentally genetically resequenced into a humanoid rat after a malfunction brought on by a stray rodent etc etc....... see how easy that was? Now just pray that those douches are reading this -_-

You can thank Me later

Not to agree with Bay...BUT I think this is what he's doing...because in some cased BASED ON THE VARIOUS retellings from the Original Writers.

One could say the Turtles are more Alien based. This is simple because of the ooz. In some back stories the ooz had more of an alien connection than human one. I think Bay will be focusing on this, and not making them, I HOPE NOT, aliens that study ninjutsu, that look like they are giant turtles.

Think about some of the many remakes the Original writers of turtles did. Shredder was human (Original Comic) lost his head and was dead. Then Cartoon 1 he was a BABIES Bitch following that brain alien's orders. Then in another Cartoon 2 he did die like he did in the Original comic-book...BUT he was an ALIEN (a brain alien, that in the funny cartoon he took orders from).

In Cartoon 2 Shredder was an Alien, and the main Turtle the story was how the brain aliens had been living among humans since the time of the Shinobi and the ooz and splinters master were all effected by them!

I know we don't like changing s**t, BUT The Original Creators of Ninja Turtle have rewritten the story at least 7 times! I think its AMAZING that They still write/draw and have worked on all the animated shows + movies...CONTINUOUSLY RE-writing Ninja Turtles.

HELL I doubt, because they keep doing this, people even know what the Original story is from start to finish. They have even merged to different Origins together and ERASED some events when continuing the story.

EX: Leo...lost his hand in the original comic-book and Don became a Cyborg! then they just erased that but continued the story as if it didn't happen. Talk about Cannon ideas and history and so on and so on.

I HOPE THEY ARE NOT ALIENS...but I think you understand what might happen here.

Truthfully, I wish I could say that I feel outrage on this subject. After watching repeated bastardizations of various different licensed properties in the name of big-screen adaptation, I've kind of lost my gag reflex over such things. I guess you could say I've been jaded.

Dude, don't give Bay any thoughts about Thundercats. At least one franchise must remain safe the destroyer of childhoods.

Exactly. Thank God George Lucas already ruined Star Wars before Bay ever got the chance.

UPDATE: Kevin Eastman responds.

Kevin Eastman - "Hey Guys, Sorry to have been away for so long--completely swamped with work--but it is some pretty exciting stuff. I had been invited to check out the TMNT film development by my friend Scott Mednick over the years, and a while back had a full look behind the curtian at what writers Appelbaum and Nemec, director Liebesman, and producer Bay are doing--and trust me--it IS AWESOME. I'm officially on board, and will share more as I'm allowed... thanks all!"

I'm betting that whatever mutates the turtles in this movie comes from space, and that Bay misspoke (but too embarrassed to admit it).

I honestly can't imagine a movie where the TMNT are little green men from a distant planet. In fact, I refuse to imagine it.

TMNT doesn't needed to be 'spiced up' by changing their origin or anything. Besides, it's impossible to make a better movie than the first film. So you might as well stop.

@TheGreyOutcastX: amazing, actors not talking shit toward a director/film producer with massive influence! they must really believe that Bay is doing something creative and intelligent.

From: Leonardo, O'Neil in favor of Bay's TMNT Reboot

"Michael Bay wants to do a different take on the turtles origin story ... Mazel Tov!" Tochi said. Hoag's support may be a bit mercenary in nature as she openly lists the Bay projects she's been involved in since her sewer-spelunking days.

They are trying to reassure people but I bet those actors don't even know what he's planning to do, that's probably just an answer toRobbie Rist'sopen letter.

They'll probably end up calling it something like Totally Wicked Alien Thugs... but seriously, there are certain expectations that people... you know... expect... from a movie like this, I mean sure there's been a steady deviation from the original comic, but were they really that big? - having multicolored headbands instead of red ones, having a more detailed background, given slightly different personalities depending on the incarnation and the change from being called "Hero Turtles" to being called "Ninja Turtles" ... other than that, it's all been pretty steady.

They have always been teenagers, always been mutants, always been ninjas and always been turtles... and quite frankly changing that would be completely out of order, the Turtles are supposed to be incognito... in the shadows... their priority is to remain a secret from the outside world... so they choose a man who is mostly known for over-the-top explosions to be the director... I mean really movie makers... REALLY?!?!
