May 2014 Character of the Month: Spider-Man

It's time to celebrate Spider-Man! Just don't let J. Jonah Jameson know about it because he'll ruin the fun.

This was a massive week for Spider-Man. Firstly, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN is no more and Peter Parker is finally back in control of his life in an all-new volume of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (check out our review of the debut issue here). Secondly, the hero's latest movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opened here in the United States (you can read our review here). On top of that, we created the first poll for our new 'Character of the Month' segment and Spidey had to trouble webbing up the competition.

So, what does this mean for the web-slinger? First and foremost, we encourage you -- yes, you -- to celebrate Spider-Man in the forums. From making battles with him to trivia threads and games, you should give the webhead some extra love in the community discussions. On top of that, we'll start pumping out some articles about the iconic character next week. The 'Question of the Week' will be geared towards him and, on Friday, we'll post 'Spider-Man's Best Battles.' Eventually, we'll also share 'Spider-Man's Best Covers' and a whole lot more. Spidey's been through some rough times over the decades, so he definitely deserves the love. Be sure to keep an eye on the homepage this month for plenty of Spider-Man goodness!

In case you're wondering about the voting, we've posted the results below (528 Viners voted). Wolverine fans, what happened?!

Let's kick off the celebration right now. Go ahead and share with us your favorite panel of Spider-Man below and tell us why it's special to you. Commence the Spider-Man praise!

Still kind of odd IMO that Wonder Woman beat both Superman and Wolverine.

I love this new feature. Great for Spidey. I am surprised though. I guess Batman doesn't always win.

Also I'm REALLY surprised how Wonder Woman got as many votes as she did, I would've expected Superman to be in third place since he has more than one book running. Poor Wolverine though...

Yeah, I voted for Diana... But I figured Pete was the second-to-last person who would have been chosen...just above Diana.

Good stuff! Let's be honest, it was always going to be either Spidey or Bats who took this poll.

Both characters have anniversaries and/or other big doings going on at the moment. It's Batman's 75th, and Peter Parker has finally returned (as Spider-man) to both the comic pages and the big screen this month.

You do realize that for the next month me and @laflux are going to be completely insufferable now right? (more so than usual)

And then they say "Superior made Spider-Man a badass.".....clueless sons o'......

This actually makes me happy. Batman has a whole year, least we can do is give Spidey a month.

..Cool poll result, Spiderman and Batman way out in front which reflects the popularity of the two characters in the wider world, i.e. they are by far the most popular super-heroes...

Why no love for Superman?!

When I see this scan, in fact when I read Back in Black Spider-Man (I actually have the hardbook copy) and I never usually get Hardbook copies, it just makes me mad whenever I mention JMS as one of the best Spider-Man writers, and people reply, who?

Edited by Strider92

@laflux: It makes me vexed that Dan Slott beat him in that writers poll. Bendis was a solid winner thanks to Ult Spider-man but Slott beating JMS!? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I never met this kind of people.

Spider nut huggers clogging up the polls.....

Spider-Man has had a very polarizing figure write ASM for a long while, longer than Wolverine has been stuck in his admittably horrible gimmick, and he still gets more than 7 times as many voters as Wolverine did.

Clear showing of "Superiority" there, if I do say so myself :P

...... Wolverine will make a comeback......

@wolverine08: Only when guys like Mark Millar and Claremont start writing him again. He's actually quite likeable then. I think alot of Writers misunderstand Wolverine's toughness, loner personalilty and clouded past as an excuse to for him to be an a$$hole.

Also did you know he's going to die come this fall?

The only writers I can think of that write him as an asshole are Jason Aaron when he's writing Wolverine along with other X-Men and Bendis in All New X-Men. Pretty good examples of how to not write Wolverine in those books.

I heard, but I'm still skeptical. I still feel that they just mean that he'll be completely changed come whatever happens, thus the metaphorical death.

I remember an issue from a while back... Wolverine vol 3 #41 by Stuart Moore. Wolverine had decided to do Black Panther a favor by saving the baby whom was supposed to become queen of her village but her parents had gotten killed by some revolutionary soldiers. He took baby and was basically trying to get her to a safe point of the country and got shot up with guns, arrows, etc., but refused to quit. He was also able to talk the child soldiers working under revolutionary from doing what they were doing and to try find peace so that he could protect the child....

Yeah, if Wolverine was written like that he would have definitely done better in something like this.

@wolverine08:

I love Aaron's Wolverine run! I think the poll just reflects the fact that a) Spidey has a film out and shifting loads of comics due to Peter Parker's return b) Batman's 75th anniversary c) WW is a very popular character on the vine and d) Wolverine's last film is now nearly a year ago and his current comics aren't proving very popular...so he isn't "in" right now.

As a fan of both Spidey and Wolverine, I look forward to Wolverine scoring more points next time!!
