Matthew Vaughn to Produce 'Fantastic Four' Reboot

Marvel's First Family will get a helping hand from the director of 'X-Men: First Class.'

Fox's The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past have been soaking all of the attention as of late, but Mark Millar, the creative consultant for Fox's Marvel films, is putting the spotlight back on the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Today via Twitter he confirmed that the director of X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass will produce the film.

No Caption Provided

Josh Trank is directing the reboot and if you're wondering who he is, he's the dude that directed the rather awesome film, Chronicle. The trio of Vaughn, Trank and Millar all working on this one definitely has my expectations raised. It really feels like Fox is stepping up their game when it comes to their Marvel properties, so here's hoping they live up to the hype. Millar has previously hinted he'd like for the properties to crossover, too, and that's something absolutely worth looking forward to.

Viners, do you think Fox is going to impress us with their next batch of films? Fantastic Four is slated for a March 6, 2015 release.

Let's take a look at all Marvel Comics based live action feature films to have already come out since the turn of the century by studio then by character.

Sony:

Spider-Man

Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 3

The Amazing Spider-Man

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

The Punisher

Punisher: War Zone

20th Century Fox:

X-Men

X2: X-Men United

X-Men: The Last Stand

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men: First Class

Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Daredevil

Elektra

Universal:

Hulk (2003)

Marvel/Disney:

Iron Man

Iron Man 2

Thor

Captain America: The First Avenger

The Incredible Hulk

The Avengers

I think it's safe to say that aside from Sony's recent Amazing Spider-Man reboot, Marvel makes their own movies better than other studios. All of Marvel's own movies, aside from Iron Man 2, but that doesn't count because the real purpose of that movie was to catapult the Avengers and Black Widow, were much better than the other studios' movies. Though when it was new, I thoroughly enjoyed X2 and apparently unlike most I liked Elektra.

The Jessica Alba movies did ruin Dr. Doom. Keep him true to his comic character as a genius scientist who rules a small Eastern European nation with an iron fist and later delves in sorcery. Don't give me that 'he went into space with them and gained similar powers' crap. Or better yet, don't use him at all, I feel like Doom is one of those villains like the Joker or Lex Luthor who gets used way too much. I don't go for the villain who gets used too much. You know who my favorite Batman villain is? Clayface. How about Green Lantern? I don't really know, but definitely not Sinestro. Maybe Dr. Polaris. But I though he has the same powers, I hate Magneto because he's overused. Come to think of it, I never really went for overused members of superhero teams either. I never cared for Cyclops or Wolverine. I loved Iceman. And the Martian Manhunter.

Anyway the reason we want all the properties to return to Marvel/Disney is for the hope that one day we can have a huge Marvel Universe crossover movie much like they often do in the comics. Or maybe a guest star from another series. And then there's this deal that Disney in the Avengers and Fox with the X-Men can each use pieces of the Wanda and Pietro Maximoff characters but not embrace the characters' entire history. And of course, who doesn't eventually want to see a New Avengers movie where Spider-Man tems up with Iron Man, Cap, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Spider-Woman, who was really Queen Veranke, and they later add Wolverine, Ronin, and the Sentry to their lineup. Obviously they'd have to make quite a few significant creative changes, but if the properties did one day return to Disney, they could make it work.

And I haven't read much of Mark Millar's work, I don't think, but didn't he write the original Ultimates and Ultimates 2?

I have heard a lot of bad things about a lot of Marvel films, and I understand the concern. In regard to the Fantastic Four movies, my greatest disappointments were the "Silver Surfer's power originates from his board" crap and Dr. Doom. I get that in the first movie, they are limited in terms of time and therefore character development. But anyone that has the rights to ANY Marvel movie would do well to understand one of the basic principles of a Marvel comic, especially in the old days and that is that Marvel has truly spectacular villains, of which, Dr. Doom is foremost. Heck, George Lucas based Darth Vader on Dr. Doom.

Having said that, I will talk about the things that pleased me in the first film:

1) Did a great job of capturing the "Marvel's first family" chemistry that existed way back from the 60s when the mag was first introduced, especially, the constant bickering between Johnny and Ben. Loved it.

2) Jessica Alba. Need I comment on this anymore?

3) Did a great job of demonstrating Johnny's conceitedness. I got a little over the top, but still was in the same spirit of the original comic character.

4) Essentially, all the actors did a great job of capturing the spirit of the original characters.

Second film?

1) Silver Surfer was in the movie.

2) Silver Surfer was in the movie.

3) Did I say that already?

Obviously, the writer's of the movie felt that Norrin needed "kryptonite", when in reality, his "kryptonite" was built into the character, and that is his desire to seek a non-confrontational way to settle things, avoiding killing anyone if at all possible. Also, everyone thought Galactus sucked.

I suppose my biggest question is who is the super villain going to be?

Way I see it is, Fox has one more chance to try and make this a success, so at this point any and all help will be welcome. Vaughn MAY do a good job here, might not. Hard to say really. The sad fact of the matter is that as long as Fox is still somewhere in the creative process, Marvel movies will continue to suck one way or another, plain and simple.

Early last year, Trank was in talks to direct a Venom film... Right after he was rumored to be doing FF as well. I guess the former is totally fizzled out now. Especially with Amazing Spider-Man 2's hints at a symbiote. :(

Ghost Rider 2 was Sony.

I thought the casting was fine last time, except Jessica Alba (who I do at least fine gorgeous). It was the movies themselves that were bad.

I hope they get it right this time. Millar's run was pretty good, so that should be a step in the right direction. I'm hopeful.

I think they should use the ultimate version of the F4 but use the 616 version of Doom. It would be cool to see a woman who was also one of the smartest people in the world.

@comicfan123: I've not seen Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Regarding Iron Man 2, it wasn't great, either but a lot better than all the other movies combined, IMO.

Marvel Studios may not produce certified gold with everything, but I'd still prefer all the characters and movies to return back to the company that owns them. Even if they don't all turn out to be gold stars, it would "feel" better having them back with Marvel proper so I could rest easy knowing that at least Marvel won't muck things up too much compared to Sony and Fox.

I really hope the movie starts with them already having powers and established as heroes. I don't really want to see another origin story that was already made a couple years ago. Just a couple flashbacks on how tbey got their powers or do a time jump after they receive them would be great.

In a post-Nolan Batman comic book movie world, I think the very "lessons" movie companies think they've "learned" from what made Nolan's trilogy work, will ruin properties like this. And Spider-Man, obviously.

Spider-Man and Fantastic Four can both go to a dark place, but the core of them is optimistic and positive and dare I say FUN. If the cure-all that movie companies shoot into these films is dark and broody navel gazing.. It's just not gonna work out.

That said, there's no telling whether this is what they're aiming for with the FF reboot. Josh Trank inevitablty invokes thoughts of Chronicle, leaning towards grit, but Matthew Vaughn has done his share of fun and fantastical. We'll just have to wait and see.

Well considering Sony owns Spider-man I doubt we'd see that, unless both the rights go back to Marvel. Unless this suppose deal with Sony and Marvel are true and he's apart of the MCU which I really hope he isn't just for the fact I can't stand ASM PP at all.

Makes me so sad that Marvel doesn't have all their characters. /cry

How sad is it when a movie studio has to reboot a great comic book property which essentially writes itself?

The reason many of us are griping about these comic book properties not being at Marvel/Disney is because Fox and Sony have both really not done impressive jobs with their renditions. They've been mediocre at best.

That said, and I've said it before, and will continue, is that X-Men: First Class was a step in the right direction, despite all the changes made. IF they can continue with X-Men, Fantastic Four and other properties in that manner, then that'd be great--but still not an ideal situation. While the potential of crossovers of the characters of X-Men and FF would be great, I don't know...I kind of cringe envisioning how it'd be handled.

I am just not rushing out to the movie theater to see the other studios' takes. I wait to rent them and that doesn't help the bottom line. Please, just Make Mine Marvel.

The recent cartoon TV show was fantastic. Good use of humor mixed with action. Sense of family and team. Reed & Sue were handled perfectly. Genius, but absent minded with Sue having common sense and the true glue in of the team/family. She (and sometimes Ben) basically played the "straightman" with everyone else taking turns as the goof off.
