Matt Fraction and the Inhumans set out to Change the Marvel Universe

Marvel is putting the Inhumans front and center in an event which will bring massive changes to the Marvel universe.

Following 'Infinity,' the House of Ideas is bringing the Inhumans back into the picture and in a big way. 'Inhumanity' will be all about Terrigen Mists being released on Earth and because of that, millions of people (Inhuman descendants) will develop new powers (just like when Crossbones got heat vision over in THUNDERBOLTS). The primary book surrounding the event will be INHUMAN and it'll be written by Matt Fraction (HAWKEYE, FANTASTIC FOUR). Fraction spoke to Entertainment Weekly a bit about the event. “We’re telling science-fiction stories, but really it’s about race, gender, sexual equality. It’s a very relevant, pertinent metaphor.”

Hello there, Nighrcrawler.
Hello there, Nighrcrawler.

Axel Alonso, the Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics, compared the event to Game of Thrones, saying the book will be about the Inhuman society growing and then breaking apart into various fractions. Marvel promises the impact of this event will last awhile and, according to Fraction, it'll apparently lure everyone into the mix. “There is a secret superhero kingdom, and you might belong there. What do you do? And what does Iron Man do? We’re turning the entire Marvel universe into a potential battlefield. And regular people are in the middle.”

'Inhumanity' will begin this December.

NOT AN EVENT!

Writer Matt Fraction and Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso discussed "Inhumanity" and Inhuman in more detail with Marvel.com on Thursday (in a Q&A that has since been pulled, but presumably will return to the site soon), with Joe Madureira (currently illustrating Savage Wolverine) listed as the artist of the ongoing Inhuman series.

Describing "Inhumanity," Fraction said, "To me it's about discovery; that moment when fate, or destiny, or some other kind of indicator that you are meant for greater things comes crashing into you. And it says that the Marvel Universe is way bigger than you ever imagined — and you might be a part of it."

Discussing the enduring appeal of the Inhumans, Alonso called them the "outcasts of the Marvel Universe," and lauded the "existential crisis at the heart of their origin."

"They were born in an aborted genetic experiment by the alien race known as the Kree," Alonso said. "They were born to be a weapon."

Further discussing how Infinity relates to "Inhumanity," Fraction is quoted, "The events of Infinity jumpstart a long-dormant genetic inhuman strain. It leads into a global crisis overnight in the middle of, and coming out from, Infinity."

Marvel.com says more information, via an interview with Fraction and Madureira, will be revealed this Friday.

Original story: The Inhumans are coming back at Marvel Comics in a big way this December, at the hands of Matt Fraction and others.

"Inhumanity" will not be an event per se, but more a post-event rebranding, similar in scope to "Decimation," "Dark Reign," or "Heroic Age" before it. Each of those came directly after an event and ran across the Marvel Universe to show a general tone or prevailing storyline across all titles. A new series, Inhuman, written by Matt Fraction will launch as part of the branding. Possible spoilers for Infinity follow.

According to the announcement article on EW.com, after Infinity, the next major crossover event at Marvel running this Autumn, the Terrigen Mists - the source of Inhuman powers that activates their latent abilities, get released around the world. Millions of "Inhuman decendants," people who may come from a cross-breed of Human and Inhuman, even from several generations past, have their latent abilities activated, resulting in an entirely new dominant race across the globe.

"The effect on the Marvel Universe will be seismic," Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso told EW.com. "You might learn that your new self is fantastic, beautiful, filled with immense power. By the same token, you could turn around and find out that you’re nothing. You’re a blob. You have no powers. You can create a little flame out of your pinkie."

Fraction's series Inhuman will focus on the "shattered Inhumans Royal family," says the writer. "It’s giving us a chance to get back to a classic Marvel metaphor of alienation. We’re telling science-fiction stories, but really it’s about race, gender, sexual equality. It’s a very relevant, pertinent metaphor."

As the family reacts to the new Inhumans and Attilan falls, they're "turning the entire Marvel Universe into a potential battlefield. And regular people are in the middle."

Accompanying the announcement is a new teaser drawn by Steve McNiven showing "characters who will feature prominently in the" new status quo. The image shows Black Bolt and Medusa, the Inhuman king and queen, along with Falcon, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Black Widow, Thor, old Guardians of the Galaxy member Yondu (who is incidentally rumored to be in the Guardians movie), Winter Soldier, a newly costumed Wolverine, newcomer to the Marvel Universe Angela... and perhaps most intriguing, a Spider-Man that looks more like his Amazing costume than Superior, and in the background of it all - the long-dead Nightcrawler of the X-Men!

What, if anything, all that means has yet to be revealed, but there does happen to be this event in San Diego next week called Comic-Con, where we can bet we'll hear more about those characters and their futures.

Inhuman, by Matt Fraction and an undisclosed artist, launches in December 2013 alongside the Marvel-wide branding of "Inhumanity."

Why do I see this as an attempt to get all the Inhumans into the Avengers? *sighs* I'm honestly having a hard time these days telling one book apart from another these days. Still, I like the Inhumans, I'll have to wait and see what happens.

Another event, after event, after event. Gone are the days of story telling within a single title. Why buy the single titles when a 10 issue event book fresh with a #1 on the cover is on the shelf. I have started reading Valiant Comics again (good stuff). But i think they will get a case of the"Too many event-itus" bug eventually. If one company does it the next is sure to follow. And its sad how Wolverine was a X-Man, then hes an avenger, now i guess hes Inhuman. Just stick him on the comic u want to sell. Hes been pimped out more than any character in marvel. Ill still read but its really getting annoying trying to keep up with Marvel these days.

Matt Fraction is the perfect writer for the Inhumans, but I'm not sure about this premise. It will be interesting if he can find a way to make large populations of normal humans affected by the mist even mildly distinct from those with the X-Gene.

And Wolverine's new costume is pretty awesome. With so many other characters getting Marvel Now redesigns, it seemed strange to me that Wolvie's costume has been more or less the same since Astonishing X-Men #1.

I really don't like Matt Fraction's writing, I don't like his perspective on comics as a whole, this will be hard for me to swallow. He has no respect for continuity and he delves uncomfortably into almost goofiness with the way he writes for characters. To me, this could be detrimental.

MATT. Don't mess it up.

Biggest problem with this event, Matt Fraction's writing it, he is a great writer except for the last "event" he wrote which was Dear Itself.

Still I really hope Kurt is back

@lvenger: dude the infinity isnt even out yet! how can you make such a judgement so quickly.

and trust in Matt Fraction it will be a good story.

jeez

See Fear Itself, AvX, his X-Men run, his horrible Thor run etc. He can do street levellers and indy books I'll grant him that. But anything more than that and Fraction is out of his depth.

Perhaps I'm the only one that saw this. From my understanding, this is not a new event, rather something that comes from another event. Almost like the aftermath/fallout....so it's NOT a new event.

perhaps I'm the only one that saw this...because I see too many damn people say "Really Marvel, another event?!" before they even know what's going on. I guess this is why it's better to NOT assume.

I mean,I could be wrong (that's what it says, from my understanding). But people really need to stop jumping to stupid assumptions.

Not only that, and this doesn't pertain to everyone, but no one is putting a gun up to your head to buy the event. If you don't like it,don't buy it....PREEETTY sure that's common sense.

Happy to hear that the Inhumans get a new book.

Also i think this Nightcrawler may be the AoA one that was in Wolverine and the Xmen i think? As for Spiderman i don't think he is Peter,he could be Miguel

ALSO the Inhumans are the new mutants?

Can we stop call MARVEL the house of ideas!

AoA Nightcrawler died in X-Termination (the BAMFs are in Wolverine and the X-Men)

I hope this is the real Kurt Wagner! But Marvel really seems fond of bringing other Kurts instead of bringing the real one back

Iron Man I can get and I hear FF is better than his Fantastic Four work. But Thor was written very poorly to my taste. I'd just gotten into the character thanks to JMS' run and Fraction ruined everything that made Thor good in his run for me.

@danhimself: I'll admit I did think it was an event at first but this makes more sense

You'd think as comic readers we'd know how this works by now.

Event: House of M - Landscape: Decimation

Event: Civil War - Landscape: The Initiative

Event: Secret Invasion - Landscape: Dark Reign

Event: Seige - Landscape: Heroic Age (a very weak landscape)

Event: War of Kings - Landscape: Realm of Kings

Event: Fear Itself - Landscape: Shattered Heroes (also meaningless)

Event: Avengers vs X-Men - Landscape: MARVEL NOW! (it's more of a refresh)

"WHAT THE FRICK!?"

That was my response from seeing Wolverine. What is he wearing? Forcing him into a costume that covers his arms is a travesty!

Why is Angela front in center. Oooh, NIGHTCRAWLER! Better not be that stupid AOA version. I'm sick of him. And last but not least, The Amaaaaaazing Spider-Maaaaan! Is he BACK. YEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't going to pick this up but if Kurt and Peter are back, I'm going to have to.

This sounds like something Jonathan Hickman should be writing. No offense to Fraction but I don't see him as a guy who can write a good sci-fi series. His Casanova series was pretty good. It kind of lost it's way at some points. Also I'm not really enjoying his FF or Fantastic Four run. On top of that didn't his Defenders series just get cancelled not that long ago?
