Marvel's Latest 'The Avengers' TV Spot Gives First Look At Loki's Army And Much More

Take a look at the villains in the upcoming 'The Avengers' movie and find out what inspired Joss Whedon's script for the upcoming film.

As we draw nearer to the release of Marvel's The Avengers movie we learn more and more about the film's script, premise, villains and what comics actually inspired the story we'll see play out on the big screen on May 4th, 2012. Two recently released TV spots gave us some clues at what to expect and reaffirms some of what we already knew.

For starters, we knew that Loki would be heading the cast of villains in the upcoming film; but we didn't know who those villains were and what they would look like. The Avengers "Head Count" TV spot is the latest look at Loki's "army" that will be featured in the upcoming film, and they are not a very good looking bunch. Check out the look at the villain about 23 seconds into the clip.

Back in January we reported that the film's Producer Kevin Feige discussed in EMPIRE that the Skrulls would not be appearing in 'The Avengers' and that the "bad guys" would be beings from "one of the other nine realms." If they aren't Skrulls, who could they be? The folks at Splash Page took a look at the clip and pointed out that the bad guy does resemble another character that already exists in the Marvel universe who also happens to have some relationship to Thor. Could it be that the close up shot we get of "Loki's army" is actually from Beta Ray Bill's world? Beta Ray Bill is one of the few worthy enough to have weilded Mjolnir? They certain do bear a resemblance. Last we checked, though, Beta Ray Bill was never an inherently evil guy.

Is that you, Bill?
Is that you, Bill?

Plenty of other information has been unveiled on different outlets throughout the web including details about the film's script and the extent of the relationships and interactions we'll see play out between the Avengers characters. For example, we already knew that a lot of what we've seen in the Marvel movies so far has been inspired by the Ultimates line of books, but what we may not have realized is that the script is also inspired by Marvel's recent Civil War story arc.

We know we'll see plenty of action, but will there be romance? If you read Marvel comics and happen to know anything about the Black Widow then you're already aware of her relationship history. So what are the chances we'll be seeing a romance bloom between Black Widow and one of her teammates in the upcoming film? According to actress Scarlet Johansson who plays the Black Widow in the movie, not very likely.

Black Widow and Hawkeye have a history together, having fought a lot together and worked with each other for years as agents of SHIELD. When asked if we see the characters in a romantic situation, Scarlett Johansson quipped 'There’s no time for romance, we have shit to Avenge.'

Somehow, we're not so sure we believe her. In addition to all of that, Whedon also revealed that he will be re-introducing the characters to audiences, making the film very accessible in case you haven't seen all of the Marvel movies thus far. Oh and if you've been waiting to catch a glimpse of the Hulk "raging," then you are in for a real treat. Check out the video below for that as well as a look at the SHIELD Hellicarrier that is set to appear in the film.

What do you think of the latest TV spots for The Avengers? Are you getting excited to see the movie on May 4th? Who do you think Loki's army might be? Check out more revelations about the upcoming film on /Film as well as set photos below.

Beta Ray Bill's race seems a stretch. They do have a hint of it but nothing more. I agree with the comment about them looking undead. When I saw the the other day I said they would be from Hel, the Realm of the Dead. If memory serves there was an early comment, from the producers, that they were not Skrulls (which everybody seemed to igno and, when asked if they came from one of the kingdoms replied that that was much closerr. They could still be aliens but my money is on Loki having brought dead with him. The high-tech weaponary, though, now that I can't explain...;)

I don't see Beta Ray Bill. It looks like some ancient, decayed, undead warrior.

Yeah... but Beta Ray Bill didn't look like Beta Ray Bill until he picked up Mjolnir. Before that he looked like the rest of his race of orange-skinned humanoids, not these creatures from the Mummy movies.

So the question is are these Korbinites? The skin tone is off, and basic Korbinites were kinda wimpy as I recall. They were just orange hairless humans, am I right? Beta Ray Bill did not change into the horse face version until he had Thor's power. That said, are these movie versions of Korbinites? Are they Korbinites with god powers? Or not them at all? A lot of interesting questions. I hope Beta Ray Bill comes out of this, but that is asking a lot out of a first movie. Maybe an after the title sequence?

It's not true that Beta Ray Bill didn't look like a horse corpse until he picked up Mjolnir.

The Korbinites turned him into a horse faced cyborg before his meeting with Thor. The only thing that changed once he picked up the hammer was that he got a snazzy new Asgardian outfit and Thor's power.

Yeah that is right, he was changed into a horse face before gaining Thor's power. But as I remember it he was the only one chosen, there was not a army of Korbinites? It been a long time since I read those issues.

He was the only one, giving him that classic tragic tortured soul/loner storyline.

This is what I hate about these comic movies. If you are not familiar with comic you will NEVER know who is Loki's "army". Are they from Beta Ray Bill's world or not? Are they the Dísir, the Valkyries of Bor or not? My argument is just that now I have to tell someone that does not know anything about comic movies that we do not know who is Loki's "army". Why didn't they make it the skrulls from the beginning. Well in any case I think the movie will turn out great! :-)

I had been thinking it might be the Annihilation Wave, since the space ship looks kind of bug-like, but seeing them now, I'm definitely on the Hel bandwagon. If he said one of the 9 realms, then it's probably not space aliens (even if they might technically count as being from Midgard), it's probably natives of one of the other mystic realms. And those sure look like dead folks to me.

Those trailers really got me hyped back up.

Don't like that he called Thro a "demi-god" though, he's a straight-up god.

Loki's army is the Disir

The Dísir were the Valkyries of Bor. Having rebelled against him as well as nature, they had begun feeding on gods. Once discovered, they were cast out from all realms, existing in the spaces between realms in spirit-form alone.

Loki gained control of them and bartered their services to Mephisto...

Adapted for the movie of course

You know, I hate 3D (even though I keep finding myself in a 3D theater with glasses on)... this past weekend I ended up seeing the Avengers trailer in 3D. I'd seen it a bunch online and regular, but I have to say... if the movie delivers an equal 3D experience that the trailer does, I may find myself praising 3D for the first time ever. The trailer had me hyped... seeing it in 3D has me double-hyped. Coming from a person who dislikes 3D, that's saying a lot.

I'm still thinking its Chitauri... their comic book connections to Nazi's is too convenient to pass up when you factor back in the Cosmic Cube and Captain America flick.

I guess it could be Beta Ray Bill's species, but Beta's has sort of snout thing going on. In the Silver Surfer cartoon series, Beta Ray Bill's people were warriors who lived for battle, so that could tie in to the movie. Anybody a Beta Ray Bill expert?

Whedon definitely said that Loki's army would be familiar faces to Marvel Comics readers but after seeing the first TV Spot, I have no idea who they are. I guess because they aren't portrayed in their usual form in the comics that I probably would have problems recognising who they are.

1. They are the Chitauri who are the Ultimates version of Skrulls but are not technically skrulls so Whedon would not technically be lying.

I agree with you. That would be good.

No Skrulls? Then that scene where Thor, Cap, and Iron Man seem to be fighting, isn't at all what I thought it was. And that rumor about Maria Hill is false too.

What rumor about Maria Hill?

When I first saw the 'creatures' in Loki's army the brief look of their headbands reminded me of the Destroyer. Maybe Odin didn't build the Destroyer but took it some someone else like Fire Demons. We've already had Frost Giants after all. That or Dark Elves....or Trolls....or Dwarves or something.

1. They are the Chitauri who are the Ultimates version of Skrulls but are not technically skrulls so Whedon would not technically be lying.

2. They are Asgardian trolls or dark elves, but I don't think so.

3. Resurrected vikings
