Marvel's FAN EXPO Round-Up

Here's some of the publisher's big announcements from the Canadian convention.

We've been hearing plenty of Marvel news coming out of FanExpo in Canada over the course of the last couple of days, so we've decided to summarize a few of the biggest reveals. As you may already know, MARVEL: NOW isn't just going to shake up different characters on different titles, it's going to shuffle creators on different books, as well. We already discussed the fact that Matt Fraction will be leaving INVINCIBLE IRON-MAN and THOR and will be joining artist Mark Bagley on FANTASTIC FOUR and Mike Allred on FF, but that's not all. In fact, according to Marvel Editor Stephen Wacker, this is the biggest "shake-up" the company has experienced since Joe Quesada came on the scene over a decade ago.

No Caption Provided

"The last time there was an initiative this big was when Joe [Quesada] came on board 10 or 12 years ago. Marvel has always had a very simple philosophy for what we do: It's great characters, great creators, great comics. This just really goes back to that."

These "shake-ups" are bound to freshen up the Marvel universe. UNCANNY AVENGERS, for example, will feature the talents of Rick Remender who is leaving UNCANNY X-FORCE and will follow Wolverine as the new leader of the team as he strives to create a new team of Avengers and X-Men characters. Remender will be joined by artist John Cassaday on the title. But that's not all. Marvel is also releasing a "point one" issue that will feature a plethora of some of their biggest names all on one book. According to Newsarama, the book will feature the talents of Brian Michael Bendis & Steve McNiven, Matt Fraction & Mike Allred, Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness, Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie, Nick Spencer & Luke Ross and Dennis Hopeless & Gabriel Hernandez Walta. The upcoming Point One issue will likely answer a lot of questions about the upcoming changes, including what Nick Fury Jr.'s role in the Marvel Universe is.

== TEASER ==

The publisher also revealed that since the AvX: VERSUS books did so well, that they will be releasing A+X, which will feature team-ups of Avengers and X-Men characters in 10-page stories by some of Marvel's biggest names. The stories will feature team-ups of an Avenger and an X-Man working together. Some of the stories we might see include Hulk and Wolverine, Captain America and Cable, Spider-Man and Beast and Kitty Pryde and Iron Man. Kitty and Tony Stark? Now that should be interesting.

Marvel also discussed their plans for their ALL NEW X-MEN book that will feature the return of a young Jean Grey and will focus on the original five X-Men. Marvel revealed Stuart Immonen's stunning interlinking covers in one image, and on it we see the "Phoenix Five" -- with the exception of Colossus and Namor.

No Caption Provided

It's clear that the Marvel: NOW! initiative is an attempt to get people excited about reading Marvel comics as well as a way to bring new comic readers into the fold, which would definitely be great for the publisher. Many people have compared 'Marvel: NOW' to last year's 'New 52' relaunch from DC Comics -- including Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso. Alonso compared the initiative to DC saying that the publisher [DC] did not have enough confidence in their writers.

"…One of the faults of The New 52, for me, was that they had such non-confidence in so many of their writers that by the fourth or fifth issue, they were shaking up the relaunches. You will not see this. The writers are there for the long road."

It's an interesting observation, and Alonso does in fact have a point. Many of DC's books were either canceled after the first wave, or they received new creative teams (THE FURY OF FIRESTORM, VOODOO, HAWKMAN, DEATHSTROKE and so on).

And although these announcements pertain to a lot of the bigger titles and characters at Marvel, the publisher also unveiled plans for a new ongoing series that will focus on a more obscure Marvel character -- namely, Morbius. Marvel editor Stephen Wacker stated that creators Joe Keatinge and Rich Elsing will be teaming up for a new series that will focus on Morbius and will launch in January. According to The Beat the new series will "spin off of the recent Lizard/Morbius/Spider-Man storyline in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and will be set up in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 699.1 in December."

Thats a lot of announcements and a lot of shifts and changes on the upcoming titles, but what do you think? Do you think change is good, or do you feel that if it's "not broke, don't fix it"?

I'm still not utterly convinced that any of the Phoenix Five shown here (more so Emma and Scott) are "safe"..and could still die. For example; Issue 9 of Children's Crusade showed Cassie Lang, who was dead by that point. I'm cautiously optimistic about All New X-men regardless, just don't want Bendis messing with continuity too much (like what he did with the Avengers).

Why has there been no announcements regarding Spider-Man's future in Marvel NOW regarding both story and creative team?

Does EVERY book have to have a "point one" issue? Seriously? Point One issues are their new variants, just another way to make money by pushing out something useless.

So, does anyone have any ideas who the woman on the very right of the All New X-men pic is? Apparently its not Rachel Summers or (less likely) Hope.

I really want to read All New X-Men (even though I think the title is odd).

There's a distinct lack of Namor in that Extinction team pic.

I'm definitely picking up All-New X-Men. I'm really excited to read it. I'm debating between Uncanny Avengers, Thor and Captain America. All three sound amazing, but I can only afford to get one of them. If I get more I'd have to drop some DC titles and I don't know if I want to do that.

That's true. I had pretty much figured UXF dead though once Remender left, like, they'd just end the book. I guess not.

Bring on Uncanny Avengers. I'm pumped.

@ragdollpurps: I hadn't even thought of DP in that scenario. Damn. Guess Way did get some UXF experience recently in DP, too, when he had them show up in "DEAD." This kinda makes sense, when you look at the big picture. Oh well.

Yeah, I think that's the first mention I've seen announcing that departure. And that'll be such a shame. I wonder if they'll conclude the series or get another writer who's competent enough to continue it well.

...Nah. Almost none of the New Marvel books grab at me. Indestructible Hulk, a definite. But the x-books look bad before they ever started. The art is really really good though; that Beast and Spidey is so McGuinness, and by default, frikkin' awesome.

NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

& yes I did need to do that. I love Uncanny X-Force. Its one of my favorite Marvel books of all time. Rick Remender knows how to write good stories. I originally bought the book only because Wolverine was in the book. But once I read it, I started to love the team, the stories, the villains, the art, just everything about the book. Heck its my favorite X-Men book. Uncanny X-Force will never be the same once he leaves. So Rick Remender will be writing Uncanny Avengers, Captain America, and Secret Avengers once he leaves Uncanny X-Force. Man this sucks like Grant Morrison leaving Action Comics. :(

Man I wish X-Force was not ending, but I'll be reading Uncanny Avengers no matter what. Opena's on the Hickman title sounds good to, but X-Force has just been silly good, and anyone who has been reading knows what I'm talking about and is agreeing with me. I thought Havok was gonna be team leader for this title also? What ever, I'm sure it's gonna be great. I love the idea of most of the writers on all the titles. I think the shake ups are going to be great. At first I was hesitant on Bendis idea of his X-Men title, but then I remembered just how damn good he writes teenagers and I'm very excited about that book too. He's hasn't been on Ultimate Spider-man for 100 plus issues because he sucks, and everyone who reads that book knows how good he is at what he does.

Is it possible that Marvel plans on replacing the Xmen with their past counterparts in the long run to bring them back to the way they started? Cyclops at this point is just a shadow of his former self, it is also an easy way to bring back Jean. It would also be really fun to see Beast interact with his ape-like self and Emma deal with younger Cyke and Jean

So a pissing contest between Marvel and DC - and Alonso wants to play 'swords'. This whole marketing campaign has literally cost them my patronage. Hated to do it - but the call was put in to my local retailer over a month ago. Alonso casting stones at the 'no faith in writerzz' is comical at best. Comedy of errors sans the inspiring dialogue.

I guess hindsight really is 20/20 when you can base successes off of earlier failures :/ Only NOW title I'm remotely interested in is Hulk myself.

I was at Fan Expo this past weekend, but it was ridiculously crowded and I didn't get a chance to hear about most of the major Marvel announcements until I read them online. Firstly, I'm super bummed about Uncanny X-Force; it's one of my favourite books and I'm sad to see Remender go. As for Marvel Now, I'm still not sold. A + X looks like another plot-less team-up book and FF looks like it'll be terrible based on the covers (although it's not good to judge a book by it's cover). All-New X-Men looks pretty decent and so does the new Hulk book, but I'm not nearly as excited for Marvel Now as I was the New 52. For now, the only Marvel books I care about are Daredevil, Hawkeye and UXF.

I just read somewhere that the Marvel Now titles are going to be bi-weekly. Is this true? Are all the titles going to be bi-weekly? If not, which ones will?? I hope this is true. Not so much because I want more books to be released but because I think it will that much faster for us readers to know if we'll like the new writers on the titles and what they are doing. With the DC revamp it seemed like it took forever to grasp just what was happening with the monthly releases.

At least you can say that it's better done than the "New 52". It seems like they are actually trying to keep their continuing storylines intact instead of stopping them midway with no explanation and reinventing them.

I'm incredibly uninterested in Marvel NOW. I'm just really put off by the idea of mixing all the Marvel characters instead of going for more self-contained books. It seems like one big bad crossover event that never ends.

I like X-Men, but I'm really not at all interested in Avengers. I'm just not, sorry. To me, part of the appeal of the X-Men that unlike most superheroes, they're not ordinary people striving to something extraordinary with their aqcuired superpowers - they're people born with extraordinary powers who strive to be accepted as normal people. Sure, they fight crime as well, but the struggle for acceptance is also always there. In my opinion, that makes for a much more interesting premise & more interesting social commentary. Having all these X-Men characters become members just turns them into regular superheroes, and that really bums me.

Mashing these franchises together doesn't make me more inclined to pick up titles that aren't X-Men-related. On the contrary, it makes me less interested in X-Men characters I used to like. Rogue is one of my favourite characters, but I'm probably never going to pick up Uncanny Avengers because I just don't care.

I'd really rather have great stories than endless crossovers. My favourite X-books in recent times have been the ones that stay away from lame crossovers and develope their own self-contained stories instead. That's usually the key to good storytelling.

Where does it say that Rick Remender is leaving Uncanny X-force?

I was told that X-force was going to continue past Marvel Now and that the only difference is that some minor changes will be made to the characters. In interviews Rick does nothing but talk about the plans he has for X-force including future plans for a new character hinted at in issue 18 called Dr. Mind Bubble.

Well now we know Cyclops and Emma aren't going to die and that the fight between them in AvX will be resolved somehow. Some game changer eh Marvel? You got rid of the BP and Storm marriage, why not this one? The relationship between Scott and Emma isn't working out, what with Emma cheating on Namor so why is it still going huh? And isn't Havok supposed to be the leader of the Uncanny Avengers?

I do agree with Alonso on DC's apparent level of non-trust in many of its writers with the level of editorial interference that's been on display, like they seem to let Johns do whatever he wants but don't trust Perez with Superman?
