Marvel Unveils First MARVEL: NOW! - Point One Teaser

Two integral pieces to the MARVEL: NOW! puzzle are revealed in the latest teaser from Marvel Comics.

With San Diego Comic-Con 2012 behind us, Marvel doesn't seem to miss a beat. Earlier today the publisher unveiled the first teaser to MARVEL: NOW!, the upcoming initiative that will -- according to Marvel -- change the Marvel universe as we know it.

ON SALE OCTOBER 2012

All we have at this point is an image to go along with the roster of creators who have signed on to work on MARVEL: NOW! But oh, what an interesting image it is. The cover depicts a young Nick Fury Jr. tossing what appear to be playing cards at the viewer. Each of the five cards, except one, has a question mark. Clearly, these cards will feature the key players that will be involved in this new series launching this October. The one figure that appears on the face of the card looks like it could be Nick Fury Sr. (is that an eyepatch?) or maybe even Cable? What do you guys think? What do you think the cards represent? Do you think the people that appear on the cards are going to be the good guys or the bad? What do you think MARVEL: NOW! will be about?

@Psimitar: Agreed.

Makes sense that if the TO is gone, then he wldn't have an organic right eye anymore and thus would need an eyepatch. However, it does show in X-Sanction that he's completely restored as you say. So... i guess we'll find out once Marvel Now takes effect

I thought the white hair guy with the eye patch was Nick Fury, now a older looking veteran. But I guess it was Cable. So I guess they are fazing Fury out for Fury Jr. Not sure I'm happy with that. When they first started drawing Secret Warriors I thought they were making Fury have gray hair with white streaks on the sides. I thought that was so cool. They should do that.

I cannot remember a time when I was not into either American comics or Japanese manga. I was always a casual reader, and occasional collector when it came to a character I enjoyed at that time. And while the only title I have been seriously reading has been Avengers Vs. X-Men (which I ended up doing a marathon reading just to catch-up), I try my best to keep up with both DC and Mervel... While seeing if I can like IDW (So far - No). So while DC has done another reboot (their first was after the first Crisis) and now feels too much like Wildstorm (with a few things I dislike), while Marvel's approach feels more like a Shueisha JUMP event - As in Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z, Naruto to Naruto Shippuden, and so on. And honestly, do you hear fans in Japan gripe about the changes made in One Piece, BLEACH, and so on? Major changes tend to have American readers complain, even when they have no evidence to back up the validity of their words.

With Nick Fury, Jr., I think this was something that they were planning for some time now. A real fan of Nick Fury would be acknowledging the fact that the character is well into his 70s. That his attempts to be relevant in the modern Marvel Universe was seen in both Secret Warriors and Avengers 1959. Yet, neither title had spawned a new solo title for Nick, despite the fact that he is now said to be immortal... And that works well for comic longevity. (Plus, also, notice how none of these "fans" mentions the direct-to-video David Hasslehoff "Nick Fury" movie?) Case in point is simple - Nick, Jr. is the new head of S.H.I.E.L.D., which allows Marvel to consider a Nick, Sr. comic series if the demand ever pops up. (Myself, I'd love to see a Nick Fury-Frank Castle team-up in the new Marvel NOW! line.) Simply because he is not tied up in a major role that initially had him be nothing more than a major supporting character, and not the person he used to be.

As for Cable, he is another irony on grounds how the "fans" are speaking up as if they are experts on a character that actual writers are redeveloping. (Nick Fury is the bigger one, as I still hear people not point out when the last time Nick was relevant in the Marvel Universe. And I am thinking as far back as Wolverine Vol. 2 No. 50!) But with Cable, they could have chosen either eye to patch up and it would be relevant. Simply because the character faced major changes after his initial "death" and rebirth, and was even shown to be de-aged after Hope cured him. So with the patch, they could have chosen the scarred left side of his head or the formerly glowing right side. It is determined by the creative team, and has me intrigued. But, then again, I prefer the "Marvel Vs. Capcom" version of these characters... And hope they bring back the classic stories I used to read when Larry Hama (G.I. Joe) used to write Wolverine. And with the changes, I see no point of making any premature complaints, as Marvel has yet to implement something that manga fans tend to experience with the titles I have previously mentioned. (And FYI, Dragon Ball became epic-level popular once it transitioned into the Z chapters. Just saying.)
