Marvel Television Announces More Shows Including Cloak & Dagger and Mockingbird

Soon comic book superheroes will be taking over network television.

No Caption Provided

Where are all the superhero and comic book related television shows? We know Hollywood still has interest in bring characters to the big screen with The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel (which has been pushed back to June 2013, by the way).

When Disney purchased Marvel, that opened the door for ABC to produce superhero TV shows. Marvel previously announced that Hulk and A.K.A. Jessica Jones were in development for ABC but there hasn't been much in terms of an update.

According to io9, it turns out that a couple more shows on being worked on. Cloak & Dagger had a brief mention before but now is moving forward. We also have confirmation of a Mockingbird show...for ABC Family. All four are in development which explains why there is no sign of any on ABC's Fall schedule.

Hulk is to bring us back to Bruce Banner's younger days before his identity was public knowledge. There will also be a focus on Bruce and Betty's love story while Bruce is dealing with the threat of the uncontrollable beast inside. A.K.A. Jessica Jones sounds to be reminiscent to the Alias series with Luke Cage and Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel) as supporting characters. Cloak & Dagger will have the two in a post-Katrina New Orleans. Mockingbird will focus on the story of Bobbi Morse, a science major in Silicon Valley recruited by a top spy agency. Jeph Loeb referred to it as "Alias meets Felicity."

On the animated side, Ultimate Spider-Man is still set for 2012 and have J.K. Simmons back as J. Jonah Jameson and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. An animated series was announced for Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men (with Cassaday as a creative consultant). There will be also be a Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. series involving Paul Dini and will feature Hulk, Red Hulk, Scar, A-Bomb and She-Hulk.

Now we only have to wait for these shows to be completed so we can get our superhero television fix.

I'm disappointed, I thought Mockingbird was going to be a live action show. Big mistake there, as I think a live female spy show show would work. The real world spy setting can work with the limited budget of TV, so you dont even need a bunch of super powered people. Plus you can still adapt a "more realistic" take on some characters. & if we could get Samuel L Jackson to play Fury, &/or some of the other SHIELD members from the Avengers-verse you could have a bit of a tie in to the films as they come out, with out really having too much of a cross-over.

But, as long as they get as many of the actors to VA their characters, it might be ok. I just have never gotten into any Marvel animated shows. I think DC has better animation.

I've been looking forward to Cloak and Dagger for a long time now and, I am thinking the Mockingbird series actually has potential to be a run away hit. If they keep the focus on her life as a scientist, trying to juggle hero and civilian life, I can see this kinda like Covert Affairs.

WHY SO MUCH LIVE-ACTION!!?

These shows will only do well animated. Cloak & Dagger...live-action?! Jessica Jones_live-action (this is the one with the bad mouth, sexually assaulted by a villain and will show on ABC FAMILY...WHAT??!

This is where milking becomes uncreative and shooting bullets in the dark with the hopes of hitting your target come to mind. 1 to 2 will win, somehow and the rest, will fail.

I like Hawkeye & Mockingbird together, but Mockingbird having her own show seems kind of weird. I hope it works out well, but I doubt it.

Can't wait for a.k.a. Jessica Jones though!

I know that they merged Hawkeye and Mockingbird with the Black Widow series to make Widowmaker, but do you honestly believe that if both those series were doing well, they'd have merged them and then not continued either series after Widowmaker ended?

I understand that Mockingbird certainly has a chance to be great and to find an audience just like any of the other series, but I personally don't see Mockingbird's character past and skill set being an intriguing impetus for an entire series.  Just my opinion, but it's one coming from a non-fan of the character so take that as you will.

She's more of a B-Lister and all the characters are unknown to the general tv audience anyway(She-Hulk would only appear in a Hulk show anyway).

What's important is that Marvel is giving their other characters a chance. Infact, Mockingbird works better for a live action tv show than the other female heroes you've mentioned.

They didn't cancel it because it wasn't selling, they cancelled it because of the Widow maker thing.  Besides, it's not important and she'll probably find and audience on tv. Tv fans are far more accepting.

I was able to watch the entire Avengers series on Netflix and was blown away at the adult appeal and good animation.
I've always loved Mockingbird... as long as she doesn't develop a sonic scream, I'll be happy.
(Have Mockingbird and Natasha ever clashed over Hawkeye?)
Are any of these shows going to be live action or just cartoons?!?

I love superheroes and I love cartoons but I honestly have zero interest in cartoons based on Mockingbird or Cloak & Dagger. The X-men is another matter entirely and while Whedon and Cassaday's run on Astonishing was fantastic, (and my God has that series ever sucked since they both left), I don't think I want to see it in animated form.

@Sekele : lol well it's good to know at least the characters appearance will please some people! also that's cool, i wasn't aware they tried keeping it on the air. I know Dini is doing it and i trust the man since i think the very best animated hero shows were created under his watch, i just have a problem when they make characters waaaaaaaaaaaay too kiddy and try to make it seem like spider-man sucks and always needs help from other heroes. plus, the breaking the fourth wall and that one thing about the toaster just...eh. trust me, i'd rather be wrong and it be amazing as oppose to being right and it being garbage. i'm just going on from what i had read.

@cdeoleo : oh the new avengers toon is daaaaamn good hands down. i like to pretend the first avengers show (that thing with weird armor on everyone and none of the big three on it) just didn't happen. i really hope i'm wrong, i just wish i didn't have to hope so much and they said ideas that didn't sound so bland.

Okay, Spider-Man makes sense and I can understand a Hulk cartoon plus I'm excited that Red Hulk will appear along with She-Hulk. But all the others seem so random. I'd rather see a Captain America cartoon set in WWII showing us the untold stories we didn't see in the movie or something along those lines, they have a supporting cast from the movie already and they could introduce other Cap villains like Master Man and Zemo as well. But instead we get Mockingbird? Seriously? O_o But hey, at least we're getting a new X-Men series, not like they haven't had plenty of cartoons.... <_<

The X-men thing is just a motion comic.

Besides, Marvel fans are always asking them to promote their lesser known characters and i'm happy they are giving out a show with a female lead(Something DC hasn't done in a long time).

I disagree, the Tv audiance is different from the Comic audience. Besides, the Bill Bixby show was what gave Hulk his Iconic status, this show could do the same for Mockingbird.

Hell, i'd say the TV audiance is far more accepting than the comic audience.

she's pretty well known, IMO
she was an Avenger/West Coast Avenger staple in the 80's and most of the 90's
I think it could work if done well

Mockingbird?  Come on.  Of the stable of A-list Marvel Heroes, why on earth would you consider giving Mockingbird, a virtual unknown, a series?  She's a tertiary character at best, someone who would work well in a team but definitely not on her own.  I'd rather they give the new Spider-girl a show.

Didn't they already do one of those funky comic animation flicks for Astonishing X-Men? I mean, I loved the series, but I dunno if I have the patience to watch it retold by the numbers. I want my freakin' Age of Apocalypse dammit!

I think Cloak & Dagger is a good fit for ABC family. Their whole shtick is anti-drug stuff and that sits well with the parents. I'd love to see some interaction with Iron-Fist and the Heroes for Hire and maybe the old school lineup of New Warriors ;)

I'm a tad on the fence about Mockingbird though. I get that she's an agent of SHIELD and has hand-to-hand on par with Cap A, but that just doesn't seem very compelling to me. I know many would say neigh to this, but wouldn't it make sense if she somehow gained a "muscle mimic" power like that girl from Heroes? It would fit her name and it wouldn't make her uber powerful or anything, just give her a little oomph.

@Babs: Well, you have to remember that the show is on ABC family, that network tends to cater to teenage girls.  It would make sense that they are using Mockingbird over someone like Ms. Marvel or Black Widow.  Plus Mockingbird doesn't have powers so it would be lower budget.   A show about Black Widow would no doubt be more Alias-like, but it couldnt be on ABC family because it would be more adult themed than most of their programming. It would be better suited to ABC, but the Jessica Jones show is probably going to be better because its about a P.I. with superpowers, and every other show is about cops, lawyers, and doctors.

The Cloak and Dagger show might work, or it could be bad.

Well well. Marvel's making a comeback on the television front. For a while, in terms of TV, DC had the advantage what with the Batman and Superman animated series as well as the Justice League animated series and then the Batman and Batman: The Brave and the Bold taking over from them. Now it seems Marvel are putting more effort to overcome DC in that area. Interesting. Time will tell if the quality of these shows matches the quantity of them.

Also, Disney was interested in continuing the Spectacular Spiderman, after Sony handed over the TV rights in order to re-boot the movie series, but by the time the legal stuff was cleared, the original staff disbanded (with Greg Weisman going over to WB to make Young Justice ), so Disney figured it'll be easier to make their own show from scratch

Also note that the series is being made by Paul Dini of Batman TAS fame, so it probably won't be as bad as you suggest

I'm pleased that they're continuing with the Cloak & Dagger series.  Mockingbird is a surprise, as she's been dead for the best part of 20 years.  And I was surprised that Hulk is being downgraded from movies to TV.  That said, I'll look forward to all these shows :)

Its Marvel; they rarely do anything that makes sense these days.
