Give Spidey some mouse ears, it's official!

Give Spidey some mouse ears, it's official!

If you have been one of the many people paying attention to the Marvel/Disney merger, then today is the day you have probably been waiting for. We previously reported that the Marvel deal would not become official until the last day of 2009, in other words, today. Earlier this morning, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. held their promised Marvel stockholders meeting. According to Marketwatch, Marvel shareholders have officially approved the acquisition by the Walt Disney Co. Iconic characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man and the X-Men are now officially Disney properties. The deal will be official upon the market closing later today (Thursday).

i think disney wont mess with anything unless marvel stars to lose money, disney may be a souless corporation that doesnt care what we think but they do know how to make money

NOOOOOOOO!! and YESSSSSSSSSS!
I really don't know what to say.The reason why marvel did this was so that marvel could go internatinal (witch i think they already are). But i'm worry about disney messing with ower iconic characters like spiderman, and wolverine. so i'm going both way for this

I hope this decision is for the better of Marvel (not only for their comics, but movies and cartoons too).

I also hope this means better and more secure distribution for "The Spectacular Spider-Man" and "Wolverine and the X-Men", the two best tv series Marvel's come out with. But between Time Warner,  Sony, and Viacom, both series have had troubling delays and a bunch of red tape holding them up.

that's the exact thought that went through my head is they got a good financial/business partner plus now it evens the playing field so to speak with the DC/Warner Bros. So things should be interesting for Marvel/Disney in 2010 on forward

I just realized that I heard somewhere that Walt Disney didn't like Jews but Stan Lee is Jewish & Magneto, Ben Grimm are & I can't think of anyone else that's Jewish in the MU at this time but I'm sure there are more

I hope Mickey Mouse and Goofy don't ruin Marvel's already decent stories. But I guess the Marvel guys know what they are doing.

I have a feeling with all the 3-D animation movies you're going to see Disney get in the video game realm as well.  Watch you'll see.  The games are gonna have to be good because there will more then likely be made games from hero's that only comic readers are really familiar with so they won't sell just because it's the game version of the movie.  It's part of that demographic of 18-45 the disney wants.

comparing Desney to Warner brothers is like comparing Wamart to Franks corner store in Springfield IL.  Disney is waaaaaaaaaay bigger.  Plus isn't D.C. just sub-contracted to the W.B.?

Can they stop charging $4 for comics now? Please?

Dang Marvel likes to stereotype huh lol because nearly all them are like highly/super-intellectual & that kinda plays into the whole smart Jew stereotype but anyways I like them all for the most part except Wiccan he just doesn't appeal to me

I think that with Disney's access to in house animation and the level of quality put into it. If this means that we could get more and higher quality Marvel character animated series and movies. I don't see the harm. Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire was a really good movie. I also watched the Kim Possible animated TV series Disney did. That was well done. Putting those kind of resources toward some Marvel Properties could be really cool.

For people worried about Disney interfering in the content and dumbing things down. Disney owned Miramax when they did the original The Crow movie. That film wasn't exactly low on the violence and mature content.

of course that was then, this is now...

Disney used to do all sorts of things they don't do any longer...for example, take The Queen from Snow White way back in 1937, she tried to kill Snow White multiple times in the movie and I have to say she was pure evil as were MANY other animated movie villains (which is why i loved Disney movies so much as a kid), I mean even in the 90's, Scar from Lion King killed his own brother in the movie...now in say Kim Possible for example, villains like Drakken and Shego always have those moments where you think they've got good in them, there's no "pure evil" anymore and honestly I find that disappointing

however, I don't really think Disney will try and censor all of Marvel or anything like that...maybe push forward more kid-friendly comics, but not censor altogether

I've said it before and I'll say it again.. there are way to many Drama Queens over this whole merger.

Disney may be a soulless, heartless uber conglomerate, but one thing they don't do is throw money away. They'll leave Marvel to its own devices within the comic book realm. The influence on movies will be minimum at the most, the distribution will explode, Disney might even be able to brake Diamond's control over distribution. All in all its a win win for both companies. Disney gets thousands of potential new characters and Marvel gets a huge new bank roll to take some chances.

@aztek the lost:
Did you just not see Tarzan or Atlantis: The Lost Empire? Tarzan had quite a bit of death in it. I remember the death scene of the villain Clayton at the end. Showing him going all crazy and accidentally hanging himself. It was pretty dramatic for them to even show the shadow of the hanging. There was also in Mulan. Shan Yu was pretty nasty guy. There was even the implied slaughter of a whole village and the royal guard. A lot of the design work for Atlantis was done by Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola. Atlantis actually strayed away from many of the lighthearted themes of the previous films. There was also Jafar from Aladdin. There was nothing good about Jafar. There was only Iago.

When I mentioned Kim Possible. I was more speaking of the quality in the production and writing. Much of these are often in house productions. Something I don't believe Marvel had as much access to as Disney. You also toss in the association with Pixar. It could all possibly make something really great when it comes to properties outside of the comics.

The X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie was quite low on the gore factor for a Wolverine movie. Just look at the Wade Wilson scene early in the movie. He somehow slices up all those men and didn't get a spot of blood on his swords. Now, contrast that to the game based on the movie that was very gory.
Posted by aztek_the_lost
@FoxxFireArt: I actually have seen and enjoyed those movies, but like I said that was then, Tarzan and Mulan were released ten years ago, Aladdin over fifteen years ago and while admittedly Atlantis is only eight years old, I feel that it's part of a past era, I think Disney really faded from having any real evil IMO was about 2003 though it had already dumbed down a lot before then...if we want to be more recent with movies they've released, then we have things like G-Force, Bolt, WALL-E (which I loved but it didn't really have anything evil and therefore to me doesn't compare to the classics), Ratatouille, Cars, Chicken Little, Pooh's Heffalump Movie, The Incredibles, Brother Bear, Finding Nemo, etc. and a bunch of live action stuff. I'm not saying these are bad movies, I enjoy quite a few of them but there are no memorable horrific moments or characters really, do all of them even have bad guys?

Now yes, I think Disney being with Marvel will do good things for Marvel's productions, but I don't think the stuff Disney pushes from Marvel will be all that dark, then again, Marvel is hardly non-kid-friendly compared to the rest of the stuff out there as is so the effect could be very minimal.

alot more merch. thats the number one thing i think we'll see. Disney wants money.
I already saw it as a matter of fact. bins of cheap candy at the dollar store. same candy,
same packaging, same company, except the print on some in the bin were Disney characters,
and the rest were Marvel characters. ill take a guess who owns that candy company.
good for them. if i had the extra cash id buy a bunch of their stuff.

@aztek the lost:
So, because they haven't done a wicked villain in that span of time they may never do it again. Most of the themes of those movies you list didn't call for such a villain. There is no point tossing in such a character into every story. There was no need for some wicked villain in Finding Nemo. What do you need? An evil executive to show and threaten to level the Hundred Acre Woods. Some movies don't need a super evil villain.

Also, what is with treating eight years ago as if it is some sort of ancient history?

I'd personally enjoy seeing some animated movies of Marvel characters with Disney level production quality over some these half-assed and silly live action equivalents.
Posted by Mbecks14

at first i hated the idea. but now i realize that not much is really going to change. but i dont like the fact that Disney has expanded its ever growing monopoly on the entertainment industry.

Posted by aztek_the_lost
@FoxxFireArt: This whole debate was sparked by your commenting on them having released the violent Crow, which was from over 15 years ago. My point was that I've seen people use that to quiet people's fears when it's really a completely invalid point. A company like Disney (or Marvel) can change drastically from year to year in their products, and so over 15 years, neither company is as it was. My listing of those movies is that it's an ongoing trend into more kid-friendly stuff...of course then again it could be that all the movies throughout Disney's history are equally dark and I'm merely growing more cynical and less affected by the films, but I doubt it's just that.

I personally loathe Disney and Marvel both as of where they are at right now, I respect what they've done in the past but seriously, Marvel has horrific (not as in horror but as in crap) story-lines and Disney has "child entertainment, no evil allowed".

So, due to my personal opinions, I probably shouldn't even be participating in an argument on whether or not this will have a bad impact on Marvel because the way I see it, Marvel's already in the suck and so is Disney. I don't care if they're dominating they're respective industries, it just proves the world has poor taste. Therefore, I withdraw from arguing on this matter any longer.
