Marvel Promotes Joe Quesada

He'll now be Chief Creative Officer.

No Caption Provided

Looks like Joe Quesada’s going to be even busier these days. He’s just been named Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment. He’s been CCO and, of course, editor-in-chief of Marvel’s Publishing and Animation divisions already, and will apparently continue to be.  With this promotion, his job will be to ensure “that all portrayals of Marvel's characters and storytelling remain true to the essence of Marvel's rich history” across basically all media. That is, in addition to comics and animation, he’ll now be creatively supervising films, TV shows and video games, with a stressed involvement in the story/script development of Marvel’s movies.
== TEASER ==

Joey Q’s promotion recalls Geoff Johns’ in the corporate rearrangement DC Entertainment did earlier this year. They’re even getting the same job title. Both announcements seem to reflect an effort on both Marvel and DC’s part to insure greater consistency across all media platforms. This really is good news for fans like you, because it likely means that whatever Marvel movies are coming out in the future will reflect what you see in the comics.

It’s kind of crazy to see how Queseda’s ascended over the years. I remember when he was just a freelance penciler working on titles like X-FACTOR, AZRAEL and X-O MANOWAR. I also remember when his old publishing company, Event Comics, was first contracted to start the Marvel Knights imprint. We all thought it was just an edgier takes on some second-stringers, but it proved to be a sign of things to come for Marvel in a lot of ways.

Anyway, I’m sure all you Comic Vine maniacs have some strong opinions about this announcement, so let’s hear ‘em!

Screw that, completely disagree with this decision.

He should be getting demoted, not promoted, what is this bullshit coming from Marvel lately? Christ. It's like they are physically pushing me toward competing publications.

I don't get it. I read the article on Marvel.com.

Quote:  promoted Joe Quesada to Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment...Prior to this promotion, Mr. Quesada held the role of Chief Creative Officer & Editor-In-Chiefin Marvel Animation & Publishing and oversaw the creative aspects of Marvel Comics...Mr. Quesada will also continue to serve as Editor-In-Chief ofMarvel Publishing...

what what what??!!

So there are Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Animation, Marvel Comics and Marvel Publishing. Now he is the king of them all?

whoa!!  nice connection on Quesada and Geoff Johns, but to echo the many voices here...how can Quesada be the one to propel story across media????  Wouldn't the right guy be Bendis?  I feel that Quesada is more the like the Jim Lee to Marvel with all of his great incentive covers.  Just saying.

Joe Q first off is a rather overrated artist. The man has completely destroyed Spider-Man. There is no way in hell that Peter Parker would have ever revealed (unless he was saving a life of someone) that he is Spider-Man. That happened in the Civil Way and Joe Quesada had to sign off on that. That lead to One More Day which throughly showed he didn't understand the Spider-Man universe at all.

It also showed that he doesn't have the balls to stand by a decision once it was made. And saying that you are creatively in a box with Peter married to MJ just shows how by the book he is. In essence, he is saying that Peter should be a static character nothing really ever changing in his life.  When the need for growth and change is weaved into his very being back in the very first Lee and Ditko stories.

And doing all of this he gets a promotion. I guess that means we can look forward to more of the same crap in the movies now.

@Whitley:
Well, what about all the good stuff he has signed off on over the years?  Civil War was a sweet book and story.  The New Avengers from issue one to current was a pretty sweet read.  Everything out of the Captain America books were sweet.  Bucky as Captain America was a sweet idea.  Secret Invasion wasn't bad.  It wasn't the greatest universe expanding event ever, but it was good.  The Iron Man character and story has been good.  Under his Watch, Marvel truly has flourished.  He had to sign off on those ideas too.  That Thor reboot is freaking awesome.  The Siege  was a really sweet story line too.  Joss Whedon on Astonishing X-Men genius!  The man has done alot of good that people overlook.  I really don't see the big deal on the hatred for the man.  Was Spider-Man a BND a good idea, probably not, but damn how many bad ideas has DC marketed over the last Decade?  Joe Q. is not a bad man.  I just don't understand where all the hate comes from?

I can understand why he'd be promoted. During his time, he's turned Marvel into a gold mine. Early on, he got the best new talent on books and franchises that desperately needed help. But then he used his power, selfishly to fulfill his own agenda at the expense of a story and character people love. Does that sound like a wise decision for a company that makes their money, primarily, from publishing stories? What happens when he does the same thing for the X-Men? Or Captain America? Or the Fantastic Four? People need to take a look at Marvel as a whole, see what it's become in comparison to what it used to be, and stop buying into the hype.

1. Spider-Man revealed who he was, then realised it was a bad idea. Major points for stupidity. Other than that, yeh, decent enough.
2. Spectacularly average.
3. I agree, Brubaker's Cap has been excellent. Brubaker is the guy who should be getting promoted, not Bendis and certainly not this arrogant baffoon.
4. It was awful, Norman Osborn kills the Queen and is now a hero? No, just no. Especially since the public has hated Spider-Man for 10 (comic book) years despite him saving them on a daily basis.
5. Siege was the worst comic book series ever written. I'll will have that marked on my tombstone.
6. Agreed, the best comic book series in decades.
7. When DC decide that Clark can't be married to Lois anymore and reset  30 years of history, then the decisions are comparable. Also, I like the BND stories. Spidey is all I'm reading from Marvel now, also some Avengers, but that's only til my subscriptions run out.

Also, I hope you don't think I'm picking on you because I've highlighted your post, you're just the only person to have listed reasons as to why Quesada deserves this job, so I thought I'd answer why he doesn't.

1) Civil War a sweet idea? Not really. It was stolen from the whole WMD mess the US got into in Iraq. And honestly, a reality TV series following a C-list Super Hero group around.....bleah. Not very creative at all. If Marvel wanted to go down that route they should have built it up slowly. Much like you have Sen. Kelly in the X-Men mythos. Speaking of the X-Men, they were no wear to be found in the entire Civil War. Having them sit on the sidelines just made zero sense.

2) New Avengers is a decent read. With the exception that Wolverine is in it. There really is not a logical reason that he should be in New Avengers outside of he just happened to be there. Yeah for a short stint it was fine (much like the sub FF group of Spidey, Ghost Rider, Wolverine and Hulk a few years back). For being such a loner Logan sure gets around.

3) Bucky should have stayed dead. Characters that die should stay dead. Bucky was brainwashed and was the Winter Solider, got in his right mind and is now Captain America? Bleah.....could see it coming from a mile away. And Captain America carrying a gun is wrong on so many levels.  No problem with Steve Rogers moving on to a different role in his life. And really a case could be made that the Government owns the Captain America brand (and such arguments have been made in the past), and as result should have a say in who the new Captain America is. A much more interesting choice would have been if the new Captain America was a minority or someone like Triathalon/3D Man whatever name he is going by these days.

4) No one said that Quesada is a bad man. He just has yet to show that he can be a person with some sort of vision overall for Marvel.

So because of One More Day, everybody's on this guy? How about everything else that's been going on in Marvel books since? So many great and epic stories have come out of the House of Ideas in the last several years, all on Joe Q's watch. From the X-Men, Hulk, and the crossover events, I think Joe and the rest of Marvel has done one hell of a job.

True.

But there are just a LOT of Spider-Man fans...

My estimation, breaking down Marvel fans you have 40% X-Men fans, 30% Avenger fans, 20% Spider-Man fans, and 10% everything else.

So basically, Joe Quesada pissed off about 1/5th of every Marvel fan out there.  That's a big number!

Even President Obama (who used to collect Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comics and Harry Potter books) had to be a little upset.
