Marvel NOW Will Relaunch The Marvel Universe This October

Marvel's Chief Creative Officer unveils some of the publisher's plans to change the Marvel Universe.

This fall will be pretty big for Marvel comics. The company that brings us Spider-Man and the Avengers will be relaunching their entire line of books this October. Sound familiar? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, the publisher revealed their plans to change their universe.

No Caption Provided

But how much will change, and how much will stay the same? Although Quesada stresses that the entire universe won't be changing, he does indicate that we will be seeing the return of some characters and the launch of all-new titles.

== TEASER ==

• Uncanny Avengers - written by Rick Remender, artist unknown – Shipping in October, a direct spinoff from Avengers vs. X-Men, Remender says “It’s a bridge book, something that can delve into both worlds”

• All New X-Men - written by Brian Michael Bendis, artist unknown – Shipping in November, the rumors of Bendis taking over the X-Men appear to be true. Bendis will use time travel to bring the original five X-Men to the present day as Bendis describes, “It’s not a time travel story like Back to the Future. It’s a time travel story like Pleasantville,“ marking the return of Jean Grey to the 616 universe.

• Avengers - written by Jonathan Hickman, artist unknown – Shipping in December, Hickman picks up the Avengers reins from Bendis has he expands the scope of The Avengers. Hickman is quoted as saying “It’s not six Avengers, It’s 18 or more”. The new title will be biweekly and will be a combination of oneshot stories and longer, “galaxy spanning multi-issue arcs” as they protect the entire universe and become an Avengers for the 21st century.

This is pretty big news for Marvel and Marvel fans, although MARVEL NOW (which is what the publisher is titling this new initiative) won't be all that similar to DC's relaunch of the New 52. What do you think of the news? Are you looking forward to these new series as well as the return of Jean Grey to Marvel comics?

This isn't a reboot, that isn't Ultimate Fury, it's Marcus Johnson (birthname Nicholas and son of Fury, they didn't change 616 Fury, they replaced him by his Black Son) and that Jean Grey is time travelling.   At least now we know Cyclops won't die after AvX (now I'm hoping Emma doesn't die, I would hate to see any of them killed, they're my favs along with Nightcrawler who is already dead). Also, how can he see with that helmet? I knew he was getting a new costume but this one... I guess i will get used to it with time.  And why Cable has an eyepath on his right eye? He only had scars on it and his white eye was the other one (and now without the Technovirus I think both eyes are completly natural).  Thor looks cool, but I think without the cape he sacrifice his mighty looks with dynamic looks. And I think too that what Hulk have is to control him. Both Avengers book look interesting, specially because of the writters and what Rick could do with characters like Havok and Thor on the same book, but I really wish the All New X-Men is a limited series with just one arc (4 issues at much) and the classic x-men soon returning to the past before they cause a time paradox. And I would hate it if this is an excuse to kill Emma in AvX and bring Jean and Scott together (specially since there would be a second Scott who is actually dating THAT Jean Grey).
We don't know that yet as that might be the time travelling younger Cyclops

Why would Jean keep the costume but Scott get a new one just after arriving here? It isn't the way Marvel does things. If one keep the classic, all will keep it.

And as I said, hopefully they return soon to the past, and it's just some kind of reflexion arc or something like that, without any serious repercrusion over 616 universe.

Because there is no other Jean Gray to get her confused with so she can keep her old one but as there already is a Cyk it's easier to just give the younger one a different costume. Also why would they launch a whole new book just to have the first arc be pointless, if you think hat then your very naive.

Most of the costumes suck! Cyclops couldn't possible see. Captain America's look should NEVER change!

Marvel is always doing this. Whenever DC is doing something big, Marvel tries to cash in.

I don't think they'll kill off Emma, she's the new lead lady for the X-men so it wouldn't make sense on top of what you pointed out being 2 scott summers. If anything it'll probably make the Post AvX Scott do a bit of reflecting on himself seeing Jean and how she thinks of him assuming its negative.

Had a mini heart attack, saw Samuel L. Fury and regular ass Spider-Man in the same picture and thought Ultimate was getting rewritten...

Far as I understand they're re-numbering the books?

@Jonny_Anonymous: The argument of "because there is no other Jean Grey" would work for Scott being alive then, in fact it would make more sense that Jean is the only one changing costume as the others can be confused if they get new costumes so they should keep their classic looks so readers don't get too confused with it. And I'm not being naive, it wouldn't be the first time they launch a limited series after all. And those 5 X-Men on the mainstream present, when 4 of them are duplicated and alive, don't make too much sense to have 2 of each having character development, this is why i beleive it will be a limited series.

@Hareil0079: I hope your're right about Emma :) And yeah, basically I think the whole pourposse of the classic x-men book will be to make a reflexion about what's happening and make current version of the character realize how much they changed and in some cases, decided to return to its roots. But that team should return soon... or be brainwashed at some point before returning because they didn't time travel originally.

this doesn't sound...great. i know i wrote something a while back how marvel could benefit from a reboot, but this is incredibly unclear. one book sounds like it'll have way too many characters and they're calling it a team book instead of an anthology. the other sounds complicated in that they're bringing the original five x-men back? why. that's terrible. they need to stop starting avengers books over and narrow down those books to two manageable titles at most. this whole everyone looks edgy feel to it where iron man switches out red for black, cyclops looks like that, the hulk wears armor (planet hulk was different), thor has swords now, i can't tell if cap has a gun but he definitely looks exactly like his ultimates counter-part, as does nick fury who i guess they just killed their original character to oppeal to the occasional reader who may or may not pick up a book depending on how they feel after any of the movies, it's just all kind of silly. and there's been no event to lead up to this like with flashpoint. unless you're saying the phoenix just resets everything, in which case, better i guess? if they do this there will be zero need for the ultimate line though, that's for sure. again, i saw they said not everything will change but it all, again, doesn't sound that great. when dc started over they had a big plan. this sounds like copying in a really quick, not too bright way.

I'm glad to see Cable and Nova on there. As a lot of people said above the costumes are pretty stupid.

Why does Thor have 2 swords. . . He has Mjolnir, basically the most powerful weapon in the universe.

Why does the Hulk have armor?

Why does Cyclops look like a goofy Daredevil?

I'm not real happy about this if it is a significant reboot/relaunch. Just stop writing 5 different Avengers and X-men and let the individual books continue to do their own thing.

@Phaedrusgr: I honestly think Wolverine looks terrible. He looks to thin and teenish imo. I don't know how to explain it. I don't like other costumes either but Wolverine stood out the most to me. I actually kinda like the Thor costume though. Just MY opinion.

1. Cyclops's new visor sucks.

2. They should of just flat out brought back Jean Grey, no time traveling, no clones, no Hope Summers, just Jean Grey. A badass AoA Nightcrawler I'll take, but a jean grey with her bland 1960's persona i won't.

3. With Cyclops and Wolverine working together again. does this mean the x-men schism and regeneisis was all for nothing? so that will mean their was no point in the X-men disbanding over a poorly developed character killing a bunch of hellfire guards? No point in creating the Jean Grey School? And no point in the new hellfire club and Kid Omega's return?

They are bringing the First 5 to the modern era? Are they planning on killing of Beast, Angel, Iceman and Cyclops? Beast Angel and Iceman are finally getting cool again. Kill of Cyclops all you want Marvel but leave the Jean Grey School alone. It is perfect right now well before AvX it was. Am I the only one that wants Jean to come back and beat the hell out of Cyclops and Emma?

If this messes with Daredevil and they start from #1 again, I will be so annoyed. Oh, and:

Oh, yes. Because curse me for wanting to know how shit ends by READING THE COMICS.

EXACTLY.  They seriously need to replace Joe Quesada. They are going to do the same thing DC did, Change all the characters histories, drop several books and current story arcs, and all around ruin the marvel universe. This is just a cheap attempt and a stupid one in my opinion to tie the books to the movie universe.

@pmvaun: Nope, you are not the only one.

"However, Marvel has made sure to make one thing clear: Marvel NOW! is not a reboot or restart of continuity. This is the next evolution of their characters in a post-AvX world that will be moving things in all-new directions with creators tackling characters they've never really touched before."

And lets hope this (î) is true.

According to Bleeding Cool it is on 22 books, not the whole line like this article suggests. So not everything from Marvel will be touched. Most of these 22 books will most likely be Avengers and X-men book as well as new titles. Also with Hickman announcing that he will be leaving the Fantastic Four soon they too might be rebooted.

Any series relaunched this year or last year is probably safe from a relaunch eg. Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Wolverine and the X-men etc.

Also the continuity is all being kept so it is essentially jumping on points for new and lapsed readers. Since this is the case I can also see titles that wont get touched by a relaunch having .1 issues.

So I really hope this doesn't screw up alot of the books I love from Marvel. Venom for example.

Also is Bendis getting just this one new book or is he gonna seep his toxins into the whole X-men series? I really like the current X-men series by Brian Wood. Mainly because it gives both Domino and Pixie a place where I can read about them. If Bendis is taking the X-men name I hope they don't cast both of them into limbo like they did with Lyra and so many other characters. Also if he takes over Uncanny, or X-men Legacy I am dropping them. I'm not really a Bendis fan. I didn't mind Ultimate Spider-man for a while as its a new universe and he can do what he wants, but he has a way of messing with the 616 universe too much IMO. Also I am a fan of Jean Grey, but that just seems stupid. Wouldn't that cause damage to the Space-Time continuum or something? Especially if First Class Cyclops sees all that current Cyclops has done..

Also I know people are saying this isn't a "new 52" thing, but I really hope they don't get rid of alot of the great solo books like Venom, Daredevil, Scarlet Spider and the not even released yet Captain Marvel (which I have high hopes for).

I am both very interested and anxious for what Marvel may do with this "relaunch". Although if it results in a few new cool series (crosses fingers for a new X-23 series) and doesn't mess too much with stuff I like to read each month I'll be fine with it. Also I get to read Avengers finally now that Bendis is done, and Remender has it. I just hope they don't give the series to Greg Land... Maybe they can put him on Benis' X-men book, that'll work for me :P

I think it is unfair to make any harsh judgements on this before they're actually published, especially because it doesn't say which existing Marvel titles will be affected by this change. If it included a list of titles that were being re-launched and it included ones people were really passionate about (for example, if Remender writing Uncanny Avengers meant he would no longer be writing Uncanny X-Force or that Uncanny X-Force was being cancelled/re-launched), then I could understand people getting really upset about losing a book they loved. However, it's not a reboot so it probably won't be as big a change as some people think it might be. I'll wait to see how good the new ones are and how it affects the rest of the Marvel Universe one way or the other before I decide what I think about this decision.
