Marvel NOW Will Relaunch The Marvel Universe This October

Marvel's Chief Creative Officer unveils some of the publisher's plans to change the Marvel Universe.

This fall will be pretty big for Marvel comics. The company that brings us Spider-Man and the Avengers will be relaunching their entire line of books this October. Sound familiar? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, the publisher revealed their plans to change their universe.

No Caption Provided

But how much will change, and how much will stay the same? Although Quesada stresses that the entire universe won't be changing, he does indicate that we will be seeing the return of some characters and the launch of all-new titles.

== TEASER ==

• Uncanny Avengers - written by Rick Remender, artist unknown – Shipping in October, a direct spinoff from Avengers vs. X-Men, Remender says “It’s a bridge book, something that can delve into both worlds”

• All New X-Men - written by Brian Michael Bendis, artist unknown – Shipping in November, the rumors of Bendis taking over the X-Men appear to be true. Bendis will use time travel to bring the original five X-Men to the present day as Bendis describes, “It’s not a time travel story like Back to the Future. It’s a time travel story like Pleasantville,“ marking the return of Jean Grey to the 616 universe.

• Avengers - written by Jonathan Hickman, artist unknown – Shipping in December, Hickman picks up the Avengers reins from Bendis has he expands the scope of The Avengers. Hickman is quoted as saying “It’s not six Avengers, It’s 18 or more”. The new title will be biweekly and will be a combination of oneshot stories and longer, “galaxy spanning multi-issue arcs” as they protect the entire universe and become an Avengers for the 21st century.

This is pretty big news for Marvel and Marvel fans, although MARVEL NOW (which is what the publisher is titling this new initiative) won't be all that similar to DC's relaunch of the New 52. What do you think of the news? Are you looking forward to these new series as well as the return of Jean Grey to Marvel comics?

I imagine the conversation went something like this:

Quesada: "So Brian, I've been doing some thinking, and-"

Bendis: "Wait, you have!? Doesn't that hurt?"

Quesada: "Massive amounts of mind-altering substances help. Anyway, I've been thinking and... I want to reboot our universe. But I don't want people to accuse of copying DC, which would be the logical conclusion, because if there's one thing I hate, its logical conclusions. Just look at One More Day! Anyway... I was wondering, how do you think we should go about this?"

Bendis: "Joe, we'll do this the same way I do everything. In the most pointless, confusing and nonsensical manner possible."

Quesada: "Stupid costume redesigns and all?"

Bendis: "Hell. Yes."

Dc did it first now Marvel is following suit. This is a truly absurd idea, and the beginning of the end! Somebody needs to clean house at Marvel from top to bottom, I guess my comic book days are coming to an end, this news is a real drag. I understand tweaking characters but come on!

The beginning of the end? Really?

This IS just tweaking characters.

Cool to be honest, but does anyone else think Marvel needs a reboot because of how complicated their history is?

Thanks to The New 52 relaunch last year that got me back into Comics as easily as it did. Do you guys think I will be able to get back into Marvel as easily as I did with DC?

This is in the hopes that some of the millions of people tearing their hair out but not stopping to read take note of this important fact:

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

THIS IS NOT A REBOOT!

Marvel, Quesada, Brevoort have been very clear - its not a reboot.

This is just like "Dark Reign" or "The Heroic Age". Its just their post-event direction.

Now, please feel free to continue freaking out.

well mb after all these crap marvel "events" the last few years, something like a reboot might be useful to fix up some of the mess. I'm happy that jean is coming back, but like a lot of you have said I hope she keeps her history; it would be pretty useless if it was just a reboot and completely disregarded what has happened to the x-men the last 8 years.Really what I wanted out of Jean's rebirth was her reaction to what Cyclops has become and in general the state of mutant society.

So yah hopefully the x-books get the Batman/Green Lantern treatment in the new 52, keeping most of the stuff that has been happening last few years. While I havn't been a big fan of some of the X-books last couple of years, I really appreciated the fact that the story and the characters had progressed so much.

I was skeptical about new 52 and it turned out to be pretty great for the most part, but I'm way more worried about Marvel doing something like that for some reason.

i maye give Uncanny Avengers a shot. i like everything rememder has done, and he does so well with team books.

all new xmen + Bendis = FAIL. Bendis cant write multiple characters at once, his avengers title was boring. ULT. spiderman is the only title i like from him.

avengers- i really like Hickmans stuff, but honestly another avengers title? ill stick to remenders, if remders uncanny avengers sucks ill switch to hickmans.

Next we will see an announcement that they are canceling the Ultimate Universe. Spider-Men is a sign I tell you. Marvel's announcement that Spider-man's getting a new sidekick can you say Miles? All the heroes outfits seem to match the Ultimate Universe more than their current counterparts. Younger X-men ala Ultimates.

Marvel said the picture isn't a promo for any book. My guess is each character represents different books, i.e. Cyclops represents Uncanny X-men, Jean represents All New X-Men, etc.

It really isn't. In what possible way is it a reboot?

Do you know the difference between a relaunch and a reboot? Marvel cancels "Thor", puts out a book called "The Mighty Thor" with a new creative team, a number 1, maybe even a new status quo or costume - thats a relaunch. Marvel throws out all their continuity and starts again - thats a reboot.

So Avengers vs X-Men is like Marvel's version of Flashpoint but in stead of a human(Flash) changing everything it is an Omnipotent Fiery Destructive Godlike Entity(Phoenix) yeah I don't see the similarity, But I will say the redesigns do look good and I will also hold judgement until the first issues are released.

Yeah I hadn't see a picture of Alpha yet. I was taking the idea that Spider-Men is doing so well, why not create a similar angle via a sidekick. I also know the Ultimate Universe is doing well + Bendis's involvement, the whole reason I see them canceling or implementing similar things into 616.

We all know this isn't a reboot. It's just a way to keep things fresh until Phase II of the MCU is over with.

Sceptical about all of this, but Remender's Uncanny Avengers is what's keeping me hoping. The promo looks pretty decent, actually.

Two problems I have with the announcement though. 1) Bendis on a flagship X-Title, and 2) This isn't Jean being brought back at all. This is deleting 50 years of character development! Screw that!

Worried about what will be happening to the likes of Uncanny X-Force, Secret Avengers, Adjectiveless X-Men (Brian Wood seems really very promising and he just got started) and Legacy (Rogue is rumoured to be on the roster of Uncanny Avengers alongside Cap, Logan, Havok and Thor) to name a few.

So this isn't an alternate reality comic like the Ultimate comics? They will actually be changing everything like DC did?

I don't like that, don't do that Marvel.

As fun as some of the New 52 stuff has been, I do miss the old DC and I was happy to have Marvel that didn't change and had history dating far back. I don't want Spider-Man suddenly to be back in high school, in a new costume, being picked on by Flash, and worrying about Aunt May while he tries to be Spider-Man, take care of her, and be a photographer for the Daily Bugle. I don't want them to relaunch, reboot, or redo any of the comics. Please.

But from the designs it looks like an alternate reality, or a spin off story and not a reboot like the New 52. There is Nick Fury Jr. and I am guessing an older gray haired Nick Fury (which I love), but I am still apprehensive and reluctant, but the descriptions do sound great. I love the 18 or more Avengers, and Bendis on X-Men.

I'm inclined to believe Marvel when they say it isn't a reboot. Didn't they try it before? With Heroes Reborn thing after Onslaught? And they just canonically reverted back to the way it was.

What i'm getting from this is just exactly what they say...just a next step. When House of M happened, there was a significant change in the X-Men universe. When Civil War happened, again there was a significant change among the Avengers, and leading into Dark Reign all of our heroes were now villains...for several years.

After Avengers vs. X-Men, there will of course be ramifications that change things. Why wouldn't there be? This gives AvX a bit of relevance, relevance to an event everyone already condemns and now you condemn it for being relevant? I think everyone is just freaking out because after what DC did, it's now a reality that some people actually would consider doing it...but I don't think it'll happen.

Of course, I might be totally wrong. But I guess we'll see in October and I'll gladly admit to being wrong if I am.

Ok well many of us new this was coming I'm not surprised at all but I will say that since I was greatly pleased over all with New 52 I'm hoping this provides much needed refreshment in stories and I honestly like almost all of their costumes and as someone mentioned as it's a relaunch we don't know if history will be re-written this could all be done through clever storytelling.

After the years of comic events one after another. Now they press reset? All of them look terrible.

I hope Winter Soldier isnt affected too much by this.
