Marvel Characters Changing with Avengers NOW!

Now that we've had time to think about the announcements, how does everyone feel?

There's been a few big announcements from Marvel this week. A lot of people are talking and we some some immediate reactions to the images and descriptions. Now that a few days have passed, has there been any change? How do people really feel about what's coming up?

No Caption Provided

We did talk a little about some of these changes on this week's podcast. It's understandable that some may not like Thor or Steve Rogers being replaced, especially if you have a fondness for those characters. The bottom line is these are all comic characters in stories. We may fear change sometimes but it can provide some different kinds of stories. Also, given the nature of comic books, we can assume things will eventually revert to the status quo. But there is always that small chance that maybe they won't.

Our immediate gut reaction can be overpowering at times. It's easy to be for or against something without really knowing what's coming up. Many have formed opinions solely on the images and idea of the change. Here's the official wording of what's coming up:

It all starts this October when Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman bring the thunder in Thor #1. Bereft of his mighty magic hammer Mjölnir, Thor must contend with a new God of Thunder in the Marvel Universe – and she’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! Who is this new mysterious leading lady? Not even Odin knows! Prepare for a senses-shattering new beginning as the all-new Thor thunders her way through the Marvel Universe!

Then, Avengers NOW! soars to new heights in All-New Captain America #1! From superstar creators Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen comes the next evolution of the Captain America mythos. Drained of the Super-Soldier Serum, the frail Steve Rogers has handpicked his shield-wielding successor – Sam Wilson, the Falcon! But as the winged warrior assumes his new heroic mantle, he’ll have to contend with a gauntlet of Captain America’s most terrifying foes! Can the new, untested Captain America stand up to his predecessor’s most vile villains? Find out this November in All-New Captain America #1!

It only gets bolder from there as the billionaire playboy unleashes his dark side in Superior Iron Man #1! Rising comic stars Tom Taylor and Yildray Cinar craft an all-new tale of a Tony Stark you’ve never seen before! Releasing the dangerous Extremis technology to the citizens of San Francisco, he’ll transform the City by the Bay into the City of Tomorrow! But at what price? And what does a world look like when it’s consumed by technology? Find out this November in Superior Iron Man #1!

I'm willing to give them all a chance. The idea of something sort of new and a little different is exciting. We can't have the same old stories we've had for the past fifty years. But of course there may also be the feeling of "if it ain't broke..."

Now that you've had time to think about these upcoming changes, let's make if official-like in our official poll.

CLICK HERE TO VOTE ON WHICH AVENGERS NOW! CHANGES, IF ANY, YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO.

Keep in mind, we're all entitled to our own opinion. Any discussion should remain civil.

@cobramorph: Thor will be far from powerless. His axe can slice a celestial and he'll still be a badass. Unworthy Thor sounds like a great story.

@tony_shark: Perhaps I will check that out. But only to show my support for the real God of Thunder, not for some pretender to his throne.

That being said I'm also considering this new Hulk story because I haven't seen Hulk's son, Skaar, in action for quite a while.

And All-New Ghost Rider #8. Hopefully Marvel doesn't screw it up by killing Johnny Blaze.

I'm good with all of this. Sam has to learn how to use the shield and compensate for lack of super serum.

Iron Man makes the logical progression of his character.

Female Thor make sense just because of the inscription on the hammer: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Thor could be her hero name. Even Thor had a different name in his human form.

I tHink tHe "new THor" sHould be tHe new God of THunder but not THor and it sHould be Valkyrie wHo carries Mirmir.

Personally I hope the changes stick... a controversial opinion I know. It allows Marvel to "refresh" their line, without going the full "reboot" (which has been a bit of a bugbear for DC... awkwardly handled and initiated... and I do still like DC, but have to admit that the New 52 got very confused right from the start).

My take on it is that the Marvel method allows us to keep everything in continuity... those stories still MATTER... but lets them update things for the modern era. After all, the sliding timescale only gets you so far, and the comics do still reflect the eras in which they were originally published sometimes. So a modern "iteration" (which I think is the best word for it) of a character might work very well actually - continues the legacy but with a fresh perspective, less encumbered by continuity in quite the same way (though without ignoring or invalidating it).

Don't like any of the changes. If that makes me a racist or a sexist, I don't care because I'm neither. We all know these will be temporary, so give about 6 months then everything's back to normal. Kinda looking forward to the new Deathlok though.

Scrap all of this and just put out a decent Strange ongoing.

Also...

wow much suspense so Marvel

Uh, jeez, I bet Sam will stand up to his predecessor's most vile villains, otherwise this stupid fad would be over in six issues with Sam's body riddled with bullets and hacked to pieces.

MARVEL keep changing every year with idiotic gimmicks and trying to pander to the movie-goers. Guess what, It hasn't been working, and won't work. Keep the movies and comics separate. Instead of doing these "MAJOR" overhauls, try advertising your comics to the moviegoers in the theaters and television. Same with DC.

How does female Thor make sense when the inscription says, "...if HE be worthy..."? Besides, Thor was Thor before he ever wielded Mjolnir.

No, no pandering, it's not a publicity stunt, there is no social justice master plan, no one is twirling their mustache for quick cash, there is no conspiracy to commit diversity, not even a single scheme to crush your confirmation bias ... no, it is about following the thread. Telling stories in interesting ways. That's it. If you want to build a disappointment construct, something that uses the opposite of logic and reason, explaining why the Goddess of Thunder is unacceptable to you, knock yourself out. But the rest of us will be turning pages on the unexpected, and supporting what we hope are good stories.

Love the above post.

I am looking forward to these changes.

I don't mind the changes, I do think it will be fun to see, Sam as Captain falcon, I guess, I just want to see how he will keep the wings and the shield in his fights.

Depending on the female, it will be cool to see what she can do with that much power, I would like to see her be the opposite of Thor in everyday, Thor is a Prince, a warrior, Avenger, with centuries of battle experience. I would like this one to be more intellectual, use her abilities in ways Thor would never think of.

But I seriously dislike the way Marvel is pushing the buzz words trying to get the casual fans involved using race and gender to seek books, That disgusts me!

It's not a NEW, BLACK Captain America...It's Falcon, he has been around for over 40 years, there is nothing new about that! he has been caps partner longer then Buck, and been in just about every animated Avengers show they have produced. He was due to be Cap pure and simple.

And THOR is still Thor, he is not being turned into a woman as the media outlets would have you believe.

So it annoys me that Marvel is going down this route to sell books now, when they had no problem turning their characters into frogs, or giving them 6 arms, alcoholics or any number of gimmick story lines that have pushed on there characters over the years.

This photo is very misleading. At first glance at the characters in the photo as well as the "Avengers NOW!" tagline, many can assume that these characters will be on the roster for the Avengers. But to me, this image seems as if it will be the premise of the next "NOW!" tagline from Marvel. First it was Marvel NOW!, then it was All-New Marvel NOW! This photo, or another variation of it, will be represented on the cover of the next Marvel Point One issue.

I am looking forward to these series. I'm curious about this new Thor, interested to see Falcon as Captain America, & Iron Man becoming Superior.

I never had an interest in Falcon because I never, from what I recall, never read any stories that he was a part of. Well not 616 Falcon anyways. I read Hickman's Ultimates and Falcon looked interesting. I like the character in The Winter Soldier. So seeing him as Captain America should be interesting to see.

Thor being a female should be interesting. I am curious to see what happens to Odinson since he has become UNWORTHY. I want to know what cause him to become UNWORTHY.

Iron Man becoming Superior should be cool to see.

So a few things I want to know. Is the Avengers roster going to be smaller again, what is the Uncanny Avengers roster going to be looking like with Steve Rogers being old, Thor using his Axe & Wolverine dead, & what will Axis do to the Marvel Universe. Oh and what happens when Time Runs Out.

Wait! So are all the characters in the picture getting their own series? Is that what that is? And I don't understand what Avengers Now! is. Is it just a title to encompass the changes to Cap, Iron Man, and Thor?

Why does marvel have to change every freaking year? I'm barely getting used to the idea of having Rogue and Havoc on the Avengers, now there's a totally new thing coming along and a new roster. They really need to focus on telling good stories and using the characters they have / create new ones and not turn things upside down all the time

@g_man That "Here's the SUPERIOR IRON MAN announcement." link is going to the female Thor article.

#corrections

Personally I am not very interested in reading any of them. None of the characters being changed interest me all that much to begin with. My biggest problem with these is that these stories have all been done before and just don't seem very intriguing or imaginative.

- Thor no longer worthy of wielding Mjolnir. (I wonder if they will remember Thor cannot fly without that thing.)

- Captain America's Super Soldier Serum no longer working and someone taking his place.

- Extremis/Stark's tech spreading to the populace/Tony Stark becoming a bit dictatorial.

Tell me if you've read all these before, because I sure have.

Marvel's strategy of doing a refresh every so often (every year?) with MARVEL NOW has been disruptive and not conducive to good storytelling as far as I'm concerned.

Come to think of it, I was never a fan of how that Spawn lady was introduced in Marvel comics either.

Yeah, I'm not interested in this at all. The good thing is, it won't last forever. I wouldn't be that upset about Captain America if he hadn't been replaced less than 10 years ago. Remender's run hasn't been very good either. The new Thor seemed to come out of nowhere, and I guess I'm with others, the name "THOR" is a name not a mantle, so I'm just as confused about that. Why not give her a new name? The only one that seems ok is the new Superior Iron Man and that's it for me. I don't really care for any of the Avengers in the roster. I guess I'll get back into it once this is over.

It will be the girl with the hammer never Thor, I absolutely Hate this idea, the name "THOR" its is birth name not a mantle, that being said Unworthy Thor still is Asgardian and has Jarnbjorn who can cut Celestials, as he cutted Apocalypse wearing Celestial-built armor in Uncanny Avengers, not a poor powerless, as some of you suggested...

My problem when i usually complain about status quo changes is not that i fear change. In fact i embrace change. As long as it doesn't feel forced in and rushed. The problem with both Marvel and DC over the last years is the constant changes they do to their characters. Take for example the Marvel NOW and then the All New stuff at Marvel and the remake of characters like Dick Grayson or Batgirl over at DC. Revamping your characters every couple of years is NOT change. It's just you not having a certain overall vision or plan for your characters wich leads in messing with them with every little chance you get. And i repeat this is NOT change. It's just panic moves in a desperate attempt to hold your universe together from falling apart. But these are just painkillers, they're not the cure.

Been really enjoying Aaron's run on Thor so I'm intrigued more than anything about what's to come, but as its been mentioned by many, it's the nature in which it was announced that has been the problem for me. As for everything seems alright except for the new design of Iron Man, not a fan of that.

I can't help but wonder a few things as I gave these changes some thought. If Bucky had become the new Captain America, would people be making as big of a deal? If The Falcon was Caucasian, would anyone be making a big deal about this? Perhaps Marvel is doing this for the sake of diversity, perhaps they're just doing it to make a controversial change or perhaps its just for money. The fact of the matter is that The Falcon does deserve the mantle. The character is gaining popularity ever since his appearance in the movies, so regardless, it's a smart move to promote him. Bucky already has his own series.

As for the female Thor, we don't know anything about her. We don't know if the concept is going to occur in an organic manner, or if it'll feel forced, we don't have any details. All we know is that Thor will be a woman now, and the original Thor will still remain but do something to be deemed unworthy. All we can do is wait.

Remember how people felt about Miles Morales? They were angry and kept referring to him as the black Spider-man (completely disregarding his dual ethnicity of being African-American AND Puerto Rican). He wound up a great character and the change felt organic, not forced. It plays well considering he's in New York and that is a rather diverse area, and a much more accurate and believable choice. I understand not wanting to change your favorite character, or wanting diversity to occur with new characters instead of it coming from already established characters. All we can do is wait, see how it turns out and if the stories are good, support them, that way in the future when new characters come out that are more representative, they'll succeed. Jason Aaron has done great work with Thor, God of Thunder, so I'll support it and see how it goes. I don't read Captain America, so that doesn't affect me much. I'll give it a chance.
