Marvel Cancels X-23

Looks like Wolverine's clone will be seeing a little less action at Marvel.

Earlier today a source revealed that Marvel's ongoing X-23 title has been canceled by the publisher. The news comes on the heels of a string of cancelled books from the publisher including ALPHA FLIGHT, VICTOR VON DOOM and the DESTROYERS. These cancelations were a result of, according to Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso in a recent Q and A, "new budgetary mandates" which forced Alonso and his team to "rethink the strategy."

X23 #20
X23 #20

Looking at the solicits to the upcoming February 2012 X-Men titles, X-23 is clearly missing, and according to a previously released solicit for issue #20, the issue will have the character returning to Utopia to decide whether or not she will take part in Regenesis. Whether X-23's title is missing for this very reason or not, remains to be seen. Will her book end now that she will be joining AVENGERS ACADEMY starting with issue #24 as well as a VENOM miniseries? We reached out to the series' writer Marjorie Liu to ask about the book's status, and are still awaiting her response to the news. As of last week, Liu reported on her blog that she is presently working on the lettering for X-23 #19 as well as two projects she cannot yet disclose.

The reveal that X-23 may be canceled is somewhat shocking considering the title sold fairly well compared to other Marvel books like AVENGERS ACADEMY and X-FACTOR. What do you think of the news? Have you been reading X-23? Will you be sad to see the title go?

im gonna miss x-23. she better be used somewhere if they take her out. i wouldnt mind seeing her in avengers academy, or one of the other x-books. she should go back to X-force, she was amazing in that. at least with this series we did get to see development of her character.

Liu's writing has been very solid throughout this whole series. Gotta say I'm not too shocked (although disappointed) as it seems to me like something has been missing in the last few issues. Can't put my finger on it...but even though I love Jubilee & Gambit being in her book, it seems like they ceased to explore X-23 in depth as the book went on. Also, and I might be in the vast minority here...but when Takeda(?) started drawing the book, it gave it a certain look that appeals to female readers first & foremost. The art just has that "glittery" look as if it belongs in a graphic novel for a romance novel or something. I'm not saying this to be derogatory at all either.....just feel as if his art may have alienated some of the fan base....

If takeda stuck around maybe it would have given the series a more definitive look which could have helped them out.

OOOOOH COME OOOON!

First the lay offs then cancellation of big events now X-23 potentially following the same path?!?!?!?

It's obvious that Disney needs more money but somebody has to stop those draw backs.

Please someone put an end to Disney's comic department before marvel falls off the cliff!!!

This is stupid, Marvel's slowly canceling books left and right but the problem is their canceling the WRONG books! We get like six X-Men books but X-23 can't have one? What the crap?! Her series was very great and from what I've heard doing really well too. I don't know who's picking which titles get the cut but I think it's unfair how Avengers get like four titles, and what? Two mini's, X-Men get like six titles, Spider-Man now has two on-goings (which I still think is stupid no matter how "good" the book may be) and yet characters like Doctor Doom can't get a mini-series and great characters like X-23 can't keep their own on-going? What the crap, Marvel...what the crap...

The heck with X-23, is the Destroyers series on or off. Depending on where you look the jury may still be out on that one.

This is bull that is a great book, here's hoping they meant hiatus. This is stupid Marvel is going to cancel all non-regnisis X-books regardless of how they sell because they won't "fit in" which is crap and they they are going to come out with books like X-Club (which I can assure you will be aweful) and a million Fear Itself tie-ins, which suck, and but let's cancel a good series and alienate fans, that always works in fragile markes. Great job Marvel.

Good news! I never really liked the character. Weird background and stuff like that, besides that we already have too much Wolverine clones. I mean okay, Deadpool, my favorite character is one of them, but he is way too unique to be called a Wolverine-clone, but there are guys like Sabretooth, Daken and so on. X-23 was simply too much IMO! I'm glad she won't be getting as much attention as she gets now.
How is that good news? I don't like the character either but the series doesn't effect me in any way so I'm glad that they do it for those that enjoy it. What the hell is wrong with you.
What's wrong with me? I simply don't support such characters like X-23 who was an underaged whore, who was cutting herself and stuff like that. I also don't support characters like Omega Red and Sabretooth who are serial rapist, but yet get their spotlight and sometimes even move freely in X-Men teams. In my opinion it's great that a character like X-23 does not have an own on-going, because she does not deserve one. I have an opinion; maybe that's what's wrong with me.

O_O Did you just completely miss x-23 before her short lived life as a prostitute(that was 3 issues of one mini)

So you don't support a female character who started out with tragedy, had to live on the street to survive and managed to move past it and is currently trying to find herself out side of what everyone else sees her as? It's completely ridiculous to put her on the same page as serial rapists.

She cuts herself...So....it's something she has to work through and it's a realistic character flaw that is relatable to many teens.

Not to mention you are using deadpool as your avatar, a psychotic assassin/murderer who sleeps around and worked with both sabretooth and omega red O_O Not to mention he makes crude jokes

Yes he is far more deserving of an ongoing than a character who has actually shown a lot of progress in their development and has loads of potential since she is a fairly fresh character

Besides torturing Blind Al Deadpool never ever did something what is too much for comic book standards and being a serial rapist and a whore and an emo who cuts herself are things which are simply too much and plain stupid IMO. It's not tragedy, it's unneccessary, since it's the try to disturb and shock the readers, just the way Kevin Smith retconned Black Cat into a rape victim! Not tragedy, but bad and disrespectful writing. It's bad because they turn a underaged female character into a whore with emo problems, or a rape victim who has been raped twice during the same arc (!) and it's disrespectful if they allow a serial rapist and non-sense murderer like Sabretooth join the X-Men.

I like X-23 a lot but honestly, she isn't strong enough a character to lead her own book, judging by how many different guest-stars they put in with her. I think I'd much rather enjoy Laura in an ensemble setting where she can play off and interact with different team members rather than those boring monotone inner monologues she has.

I don't think thats necessarily a fair claim to make. The book had a solid writer but there really isn't much of a market for female solo books, especially with 8 xbooks, 3 avengers titles and 2 spidey books to keep up with.

That's the main reason I dropped the book though. Gambit playing the big brother/road dog roll was cool and it made sense considering the narrative at the time. But the more the book went on the more "Brave & The Bold" it became to me. And what made me read it initially was the character study of Laura, which I felt got loss and less nuanced as the guest piled up.

I understand what you're saying,a nd that is a fair point. but I enjoyed Liu's wriitng on the character so much that I couldn't help but enjoyed. She was making some real progress as a character which we don't see too often in comics anymore :(

I think the "Brave and the Bold" comment was spot-on. And I really like Marjorie Liu's writing as it feels fresh. But honestly, I don't think that X-23's cancellation was really a female character issue. Any character who's not a top character in Marvel rarely has a long-running series. Look at how hard they've tried with Punisher, Ghost Rider, Blade and others who can't sustain a solo book for more than twenty or so issues. It all comes down to dollars and cents. I still lament the end of the last Iron Fist series. 8 (

If X-23 was selling well, it would have been saved from the chopping block.

I'm still somewhat opposed to the idea of her being with the Avengers Academy. I think it would make more sense if she'd joined Wolverine's band of X-Men. But then again, I don't know where she really stand between Cyclops and Wolverine (but I'm betting she's siding with Logan).

I dropped this book after the Daken crossover event. I'm honestly surprised it lasted this long. Figured it'd be ended after it's tie-in with Wolverine Goes to Hell. Not the least bit surprised that Marvel cut this book out of its lineup either. There ongoings with female leads rarely last more than 6 months to a year in my experience. Hope Liu moves on to other works because she's quite good. I LOVED her Widow arc with Acuna and feel that book was cancelled way before it's time.

I think I'd much rather enjoy Laura in an ensemble setting where she can play off and interact with different team members rather than those boring monotone inner monologues she has.

Looks like Marvel is back to no solo female books. Too bad. so sad.

This sucks. This book is one of my favorite Marvel books. And isn't it Marvel's only book with a female lead? Why isn't there outrage over the fact that Marvel only had one book with a female lead and now that book is getting canceled?
