Marvel Anime DVD Giveaway

Here's your chance to win a copy of two of Marvel's latest anime series on DVD.

Comics and anime, some feel they could go hand-in-hand and others feel they should remain separate. Marvel Television, Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ) and Madhouse have recently shown us that the two can be combined. Those with the cable network, G4, are fully aware of what these shows are like.

No Caption Provided

Each DVD includes 12 episodes and bonus features. The X-Men anime picks up with the team getting back together after they went their separate ways following the death of one of their teammates. Iron Man has Tony Stark arriving in Japan with the plan to get closer to world peace by building an Arc Reactor which will provide limitless (and free) energy to the world. Obviously his plan to retire from being Iron Man won't last long.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have provided us with some copies to give away. We have three sets and we'll make this easy. In the comments below, tell us what Marvel character you feel is best suited for being re-imagined in an anime style. It could be any of the characters that have already received anime series or it could be one that you're hoping to see someday in this form.

  • Three winners will be chosen at random.
  • One entry per person.
  • And our lawyers insist the contest is open only to those in the United States. (Yes it's a bummer but our hands are tied by all the legal red tape).
  • The contest will begin immediately and end Sunday, April 29, 2012 at midnight PT.

Here's a clip from each to whet your appetite.

I'll post my thoughts on the episodes in the next couple days.

I think it'd be awesome to see an Anime re-telling of Colossus' beginnings back in mother Russia. The violence, regretful choices, lost loved ones, and eventual escape to the United States.

Anime lends itself better to characters who can go over the top. Iron Man could easily be the most suited for anime as the focus could easily be about mecha, BUT I think an even better character would be Iron Fist. The over the top kung fu action and the type of enemies he encounters could make for an amazing anime without having to shoehorn any of the typical anime trappings.

I feel like Iron Man and War Machine lend themselves well to the anime format. A lot of anime deals with mechs and robots and things like that. The Stark armor is similar in many regards to those things that are already popular in anime.

I'd like to see a Deadpool anime. It could handle gore and blood really well as well as the snarky quick quips.

Maybe a Daredevil one was well. An anime take on his heightened senses and martial arts skills

I'd love to see an Anime version of Thor. With all that history to pull from, it would just be awesome to see the God of Thunder in this format. And to make it even better, the bulk of the anime should take place in Asgard. Odin, Thor, Sif, Loki. It would be awesome.

Nova Prime, Mr Richard "Blue Blazes" Rider himself. The series could take a Bleach style approach with the first season on Earth and the second season in Space. Every cosmic villain under the sun could appear plus they could bring The Sphinx back in a major way. Add the tentacles of the caner-verse to that and actually I'll stop that thought right there. Heck they could pull a Berserk and introduce the New Warriors through season 1 only to have them killed by the end. Add to all this the constant theme of Nova having to give up his power for the greater good only and there's a TON to work with there. Plus I mean come on, his other villains are what: Annihilus, Thanos, Ultron, cancer-verse and his buddies are the Guardians of the Galaxy. And who wouldn't want Rocket Raccoon and Groot in an anime. Nova is the vehicle for all this.

I would so love to see a New Warriors anime, if it's the classic team. Moon Knight, Black Cat, Heroes for Hire, again only if it's the classic team.

What would make an awesome anime is Ultimate Spider-Man, featuring Miles Morales! The seriousness of anime would allow the death of Peter Parker allowing Miles to come in and how the Ultimate world is at the moment. Considering how new he is and how the direction of Ultimate Spider-Man is going here in America an anime is the perfect way to introduce Miles to other media.

Wow - so many too chose from.

My best to be re-imagined: Psylocke

I feel there is just a wealth of history behind her character - also her mutant ability could add for some kick-butt anime-fighting - and hey there could be cameos!

Who said it had to be a hero? I did have a Marvel villain in mind - but I've made my choice.

If I had my pick, I'd really like to see a Venom anime. I'm talking Eddie Brock, the original, not these posers who came up later. Surely Spider-Man would make his appearances, but the story would be Brock's. I'd especially like to see the evolution of the suit's intelligence and influence over Brock. An appearance of an anime version of Carnage would kick major ass, too.

Kaine as the Scarlet Spider.

He is my top Marvel character that I would want adapted into an anime because of the simple fact that he has soo much potential. His back story and his past aren't really well known to us, (unlike some other main stream marvel characters) so that leaves a lot of creative room for anyone trying to make a story about him. He has a very interesting and entertaining personality because of the way he has to struggle between being the brutal man he feels like he is, and having the genetic impulse to do good.

And everyone that's working on scarlet spider keeps saying (and I'm paraphrasing here obviously) that " we're really serious about having Kaine be a more well known and prominent character for Marvel" and what better way of doing that then to have the Scarlet Spider be adapted into an anime to show just how awesome Kaine really is.

I would like to see an anime series of the Invisible Woman's life outside the Fantastic Four. I know there's a lot of focus on the FF family and her marriage... But, I think it would be cool to see her stand her own ground and maybe toss in a few cameo's every once in awhile. I never thought she got very good credit for being one of the top Marvel female leads.

I'm a sucker for Deadpool, the thought of taking him into anime and going to the extreme could easily lead towards some interesting and amazing things. My only problem would be in wondering if they could pull off his personality it's something that is difficult to get right, though I think in hulk vs wolverine they did it well enough.

I'd like to see Cloak and Dagger in anime form. They seem to be under-utilized and not as widely known as many other characters. I imagine their contradicting character designs (as well as personalities) would work well in animation as well as anime.

Anime seems to favor characters with a healthy level of brazenness or bravado, so I would pick Gambit in hopes of seeing the show made. My real hope though, would be to see the southern belle, Rogue at his side.

I can't believe a Deadpool cartoon, let alone anime, has never been made. The character is perfect for anything on the screen. Even though the comic can be messed up sometimes, I'm sure he would fit the bill for a show of his own perfectly.

I would really love to see a Ghost Rider anime, he never got much love during the boom of cartoon shows in the mid 90's. He made an appearance in one episode of Fantastic Four for a whole 2 minutes, granted he pretty much ko'd Galactus and left and had a team up with Hulk and was seen in a memory in X-Men.

Personally I would have it revolve around the formation of the Midnight Sons and lead into Midnight Massacre and Siege of Darkness. This way you get Morbius / Nighstalkers and the Darkhold Redeemers and Doctor Strange all in one go.

On the flip side I could also totally go for a Guardians of the Galaxy aka the Starlord years tale, focusing on Starlord forming the group and battling the Phalanx / Ultron you could even have the Nova corps show up. Annihilation War through War of the Kings could keep the show going for at least 2-3 seasons. Starlord / Adam Warlock and Gamora already made an appearance in Planet Hulk anyway.

An Iron Fist solo series or even Heroes for Hire Series would probably be amazing handled this way. Iron fist would lend himself to the style and asian influence of the story telling extremely well and if they did a global heroes for hire it could make for a pretty interesting watch.

I see it as something where there'd be the core team set up by Rand industries establishing a new outpost in Japan, where Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing set up shop, fight evil and run into new potential recruits along the way (Shang-Chi anyone?). Could be pretty entertaining and it wouldn't have to be a whole new envisioning of the characters, kind of like the Iron Man anime series (which is what always turns me off about these types of shows).

You know who needs more spotlight overall? Damage Control. Considering that anime is kind of the other side of the coin to our action cartoons, it'd be neat to see how they'd portray the group that exists on the other side of superhero battles, in the aftermath. Quirky comedy and over-the-top reactions would blend very interestingly with Damage Control.

I think Mark Millar's Wolverine: Old Man Logan would make a fantastic anime. It has this whole flashback thing going on where you know something has happened to Wolverine but it takes several issues before they finally reveal what happened to him to make him stop fighting. That kind of plot threading is very prevalent in anime series and is something they could play up very well.

The format of the Old Man Logan story also lends itself well to episode arcs. Every two episodes, Logan and Hawkeye enter a new city and you find out what another Marvel hero has become (or fallen to) and how they'll get out of the situation, all while dropping more hints about Wolverine's past and how the future came to be.

It's one of my favorite books and I'd be overjoyed if they made Old Man Logan into an anime.

*EDIT* plus the series ends with the re-match of the century: Hulk versus Wolverine ;)

The best character for an anime adaption from Marvel would be Thor.

Thor broken down has very Anime style ideas.

1) Transformation sequence/armor up sequence. Donald Blake handicapped doctor transforms into the god of thunder, Thor. Que the magic lightning bolts. Or if we go with a strictly Asgard series, just have a sequence where there armor goes on them

2) Fantasy esque world. The 9 realms would look beautiful in anime style. Check

3) Heroic Epic style plot, that can end with a earth shattering event. Multiple ones, there is Ragnarok(both the clone and the actual event of Ragnarok), midgard serpent. Surtur. The frost giants.

4) Cool team of allies and adventurers. Warriors three? check. Lady Sif Check(who would be the love interest in this version) Baldur, and the rest of the Asgard warriors.

5) Family/friend Drama? It's always in anime, and Thor is filled with it. From Odin feeling he Thor is rash and foolish, due to Loki betraying Asgard( make Loki reveal his true agenda last second.

6) Rival? Include Beta Ray Bill, Hercules, of Thunderstrike.

7) Comic relief. Once again Hercules and the warrior three would be great comic relief which even the most serious anime usually has.

8) You can make them teenagers. Alternatively they could use the younger versions of the characters, like from tales of Asgard. Because if anime fans like super powered adults, they love super powered teenagers. Plus it could start with Loki actually being good then discover his past, and do the face heel switch popular in animes.

I could go on and on. But Thor would lend himself perfectly to an anime form.

I believe that a really good anime could be Captain America. The man who is lost in time is a great story line that could work in an anime. Not to mention in an anime they could explore some of the crazy experiments that Zemo, Red Skull and Zola conducted during WW2. The show would be absolutely amazing if the creators try to stick somewhat close to Ed Brubaker's Captain America. In fact I would personally love it if they made the Captain America omnibus into a Anime Series. The story is already amazing and an anime touch would be really interesting to see and with the Avengers movie being released Captain America is a popular character. So, even from a financial standpoint G4 might stand to gain a lot from the large audience this show might bring in.
