Marvel and ABC Studios Looking To Create 'Avengers' TV Series

Marvel TV and ABC executives may be in talks to create a spin-off, prime-time live action drama based on 'The Avengers' movie.

With the success of so many Marvel movies over the years, it comes as no surprise that Marvel may start looking to branch out into television to expand their 'Avengers' universe. In fact, don't be too shocked if we see a live-action spin-off of The Avengers movie on prime-time television very soon. According to a recent report on Deadline, Marvel TV exec Jeph Loeb recently engaged in some very early discussions with ABC television executives.

No Caption Provided

Deadline's sources hinted that ABC, ABC Studios and Marvel TV may be planning on creating a television drama spinning off from The Avengers movie, but that it would not be a direct spin-off. The supposed show would be set in a similar universe and carry the same tone, but its unlikely we'll be seeing heavy hitting characters like Iron Man and Captain America on the small screen. The project is in the very beginning stages, so there's still a chance that nothing will come out of this; but wouldn't it be cool if something did?

There is no question that there is a lot that Marvel and ABC could do and that there are many untapped Marvel characters that could be featured on the small screen. What do you think of the news? What is your dream-team roster for a Marvel Avengers themed television series?

They won't have the budget for the heavy hitters (Iron Man, Spider-man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor etc...) but I think a TV series Pre-The Avengers movie centered around a S.H.I.E.L.D could work.

@joshmightbe:

I suppose IF they were setting up a movie tie in show where they can elaborate on some things or add something that would contribute to the movieverse, then it would have more weight to it... as it stands, I don't see it working... and it just seems like Marvel are cashing in on the Avengers movies... so the actual effort they put into it would be questionable

If this works I'm on board, but the sad truth is Jeph Loeb hasn't impressed me in a VERY long time, so his involvment in this has me concerned...

@Hunter114: They just said it would be in the same universe as the Avengers, there are hundreds of characters they could use and there is much more respect given to comics now than when they tried the JLA tv show

Which is what makes the entire plan completely pointless... making a show about the Avengers, without actually using the Avengers would be like making a Justice League TV series, but without using Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and then replacing them with a crap version of the Atom, Fire and Ice... and then calling Kyle Rayner Guy Gardner... oh and having an old and fat Martian Manhunter and having the "big bad" be the Weather Wizard, but wrapped in tin foil...

Honestly? If this were the Young Avengers or Avengers Academy, I'll be all for it.

But I want a Heroes for Hire series way more than anything.

Like I say with just about anything that sounds or looks too good to be true...I'll believe it when I see it/hear it. This really does sound too good to be true, but hey, 10 years ago I also thought an actual Avengers movie would be too good to be true.

All those of you who say that the budget would be too large, need I remind you that Marvel and ABC are owned by Disney. Having Disney as your parent company is kind of like being Richie Rich but without all the poverty. I think they can budget just about anything at this point.

That being said, I'm hesitant about this. I'm going to wait for further details and a cast.

I'm of two minds on this: It could be a serious suck-fest without any credible Avengers from the movie, or it could be a great chance to expand the Avengers roster and for us to see Vision, USAgent, She Hulk etc.

They should do something like Damage Control - following the lives of people who's job it is to clean up after super hero battles. Think more like Sunshine Cleaning rather than the actual Damage Control comic.

You wouldn't need to show the battles but just the aftermath and how if affects the city and people in the city. Should be set in New York.

Every so often you could have minor heroes like Cloak and Dagger (if they aren't licensed) or something cameo.

As long as they don't waste the good actors time (Chris evans, Chris hemsworth, Robert downey jr, etc.) and don't waste the budget from the mainsteam Marvel Cinematics universe I'm fine.

I wouldn't mind it, but chances are we'll be seeing some crap version of Secret Avengers, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Pet Avengers or, the worst for a while, Avengers Academy.

I don't want a spin-of show. I want my Avengers director's cut Blu-Ray NOW!

This...will...not....work. People don't want to see other characters in the Avengers universe. They want to see the Avengers. Some years ago they did a cartoon that left out the major characters on the team and it failed.

I'm gonna go with the traditional fan-skepticism... for one thing, I doubt they'd use the same actors, while the Avengers cast may not all be "A-list" actors, they are predominantly identified as movie actors, though pretty much all of them have appeared in at least one or two television series at some point in their career. There is also the fact that they would need to have a fairly big budget to make the show and considering the average TV show has about 20-25 episodes per season, though some first and last seasons have about 10-17 episodes, each lasting about 45 minutes, the writers would have to write something that would need to be able to fill that time, while creating an over-arcing story, with all of the characters and some new villains... does not seem likely.

An Avengers West Coast or New Avengers team would be cool.

That being said, a lot of the really good characters are off limits. Can't use Wolverine, Beast, Spider-man or the Thing, and probably not Wanda or Quicksilver either.

Still, I think some of these characters would work well for tv

  • Ms. Marvel
  • Luke Cage
  • Jessica Jones
  • Iron Fist
  • Red Hulk
  • Hank Pym
  • Hercules
  • Mockingbird
  • Wasp
  • Vision

That is an amazing idea and it would work better on the small screen than an avengers spin-off. I think the regular joes that consume television just arnt ready and willing to watch super powers weekly yet. The biggest prime time shows are all comedy shows so whichever Marvel does decide its going to be tough. I have faith lets see what happens.

Nah.. Keep it to the cartoons and movies.

If you want to make a live action series, just focus on one character. Like a Spider-Man, Blade, Ghost Rider, or hell, maybe even Fantastic Four series.

A Runaways series would be ideal for television, and would at the very least capture the Smallville demographic.

Just like the comic, Runaways could have cool tie-ins with bigger names and themes of the Marvel Universe, but would be its own thing enough to not get bogged down.

Plus, Brian K Vaughan and Joss Whedon left behind plenty of wonderful source material before the series started a downward spiral.

This could be an interesting way of seeing some of the Avengers we don't see on fim. There's enough good tech out there to make a good quality show if the writing is done right. The only problem is I see them using the same people who write for their animated shows, and Marvel Animated pretty much sucks donkey dick. I visualize some good characters on televisin like Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Vision. Why not?

Maybe not the main cast of the Avengers, but a few of our lesser known heroes. I'd love to see them build up characters like Luke Cage, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, Moon Knight, etc. That way by the time the next Avengers movie hits, you can make their roster bigger, maybe even lead into civil war? I'd totally watch an Avengers spin-off show. Marvel hasn't always delivered with TV, but maybe a live action show will change my opinion on the matter. Let's go Marvel, show us what you got!

Yeah. 'AKA Jessica Jones', IRC. I was under the impression that show was still in development. A lot of the speculation being talked about with this 'Avengers' spin-off sounds exactly like the pitch for that show.

Lol at all the griping.

I remember much the same being said about the movie idea not so long ago. Here's an idea for all you negative naysayers ... what if it's actually good? I for one would welcome even the chance of a non-animated T.V Marvel show.

If it's bad, not the end of the world. You see, there's a little something called the remote control, replete with little buttons to switch the channels and even *gasp* a power button so you can turn it off (yes, the T.V can actually be turned off), allowing you to go outside get some fresh air and let out all your angst in a positive fashion.

Yeah, don't roll your eyes at me, you know who you are. :P

it amazes me how much ABC and Marvel are grabbing at all the money. Here is an idea instead of trying to create a crappy show spend that time and money on making another freaking movie for Hulk or Ant-Man or Luke Cage and Iron Fist. if yall have enough free time to make a show spend it on something that will be good. The only reason people went and saw the Avengers was because of how good it was not because it was superhero based or from comics because in that cause Howard the Duck should have been amazing.

Putting it in the Avengers universe doesn't necessarily mean it will be an Avengers show. They could focus on characters who don't require expensive special effects that exist in the Marvel universe like Moon Knight, Daredevil, Elektra, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, etc, etc. They have plenty of options
