Martin Sheen In Negotiations to Play Uncle Ben in Spider-Man

I guess he won't be in the movie for too long.

No Caption Provided
It's funny how with all the Spider-Man cast news and rumors, I didn't even think about who would play Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben is perhaps one of the most important characters in Spider-Man's origin. If it wasn't for Uncle Ben getting shot and killed, Peter would have never become a superhero.

For a Spider-Man movie, you should have the right actor to play this important role. The problem is, the actor probably won't get a lot of screen time.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Martin Sheen is in "final negotiations" to become the next Uncle Ben. That sounds pretty cool. Sheen is obviously a big name so perhaps it's the small role (and big paycheck) that would make this appealing to him. Then again, since this is a reboot, maybe Uncle Ben will have a bigger role.

The movie is set to begin in December. What are your thoughts on Martin Sheen being Andrew Garfield's uncle?

Update

No Caption Provided
Now THR is reporting that Sally Field is in talks to play Aunt May

What do you think about this? Do these two look the part? They're both good actors but don't seem old enough to play the comic book versions. Although I suppose you can say Aunt May from the Ultimate comics has a little more spunk.

@Luthorcrow:
Not hyperbole... my genuine opinion on the trilogy. And I can definitely list all the things I didn't like about Raimi's take on Spidey that justify my personal dislikes. It's all subjective, right? But the truth is, we'd be going way off topic here since this is about the rumor having Sheen cast as Uncle Ben.

We can argue all day about Raimi's trilogy, but that's a tired old debate that's played out. We'd be wasting our energy. We're better off agreeing to disagree.

As for Sheen as Uncle Ben: I can't really comment because I don't remember watching anything with Sheen in it.

I find it really comical how trendy it is to bash Sam Rami's run on Spiderman.  It's really unjustified and just smells of fanboyism going a little too far.  There plenty of problems with the last film but first two were gems.   Aunt May has been right around 60-70 since I was buying Spiderman for $.20 an issue in the early 70's.
Just because a whole lot of people bash Raimi's films doesn't make those reactions trendy. It's fine if you think the first two were gems. I'm of the opinion that all three were horrible.   And that's exactly what I'm saying about May and Ben being aunt and uncle in their 60s-70s to a teenage boy. Sure it's been that way since Spidey's inception, but we're not in the 1960s anymore. Making them younger won't take away from their roles in Peter's life. All it will do is not make them look like grandparents. I think their Ultimate versions are perfect. They're not too young nor too old, but in between. They're "hip" and with the times. "

Fair enough.  I could leave with a younger Uncle Ben and Aunt May.  I still think Martin Sheen is real miss note.  The man lost his passion for the craft a very long time ago.

I say "trendy" because people tend to folk to fit in any social scene.  Comic book fans and geeks in general are no exception.  It's also because I think it is really unjustified given the tenor and the quality of the films we are talking about (excluding the third one).  It's like we are talking about the prequel Star Wars films which are a crime against humanity, story telling, acting and anyone that was a fan.  Sam Rami is a solid director with an excellent eye for scenes, passing and story telling.  I am not saying you have to like the but "horrible" that's just  hyperbole.

I hope this time Sandman is not involved in killing Uncle Ben. Even though he didn't actually killed him.

At least that's how I see it.  The Spider-Man comics and the Raimi devastation of a film franchise made made me feel like it was Peter Parker and his Gramma May and Grampa Ben. After all, Pete's in his teens. He's still in high school. It makes no sense to me having an aunt and uncle who look anywhere between their 60s and 70s... "
Let's face Jessica Tandy missed her calling because she would have been a perfect Aunt May. As for Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, this first really bad casting for this film.  Hopefully they end up picking someone else.  First off Sheen is not Uncle Ben by a long mile.  Let's face it he is too much of a pretty boy and for the since Wall Street Sheen has not turned a none hammy performance.  I can't think of the last time Sheen was either good in a film or watchable (keep in mind you can be plenty watchable and still bad, i.e. Michael Cain in a bad film).  Since that travesty called "Spawn" I just can't take him seriously as an actor anymore.  The man has been coasting his name and former glory longer than anyone.  Sally Field on the other hand would do a fine job.  Again, it is definitely glaming the character up because the original Aunt May never looked that good but she has the acting skills and great comedic timing.  The more I think about Uncle Ben being in the film meaning it is going to be another origin story really depresses me.  By this time everyone knows that story already. It's one thing to reboot and rewind but do we really have to retell that again?  Please keep Ben to a flashback.   "
I completely agree.  I feel that Martin Sheen would be miscast in this role.  It's far too distracting to have a big name playing such a role.  Don't get me wrong, I like Martin Sheen, he's a good actor, but this role does not suit him.  I will also echo the groans others have made about the fact of featuring Uncle Ben again in the first place.  There is a VAST back catalogue of stories to look at with Spider-Man.  Uncle Ben had his time in the previous movies.  Move on Hollywood and try something different, stop going over old ground.

My Opinion
Spider-Man 1 = Above average.
Spider-Man 2 = Pretty good.
Spider-Man 3 = Not so good.

Good choice, just so as long as there isn't Charlie Sheen and the other two guys from Two and a Half Men to make unfunny jokes whilst having obnoxious laugh tracks in the background.

I would prefer it if they had Cliff Robertson again. He was perfect in the role, and he looked a LOT like my own grandfather who passed away when I was little. What's even weirder. My grandfather's last name was Robertson as well. No relation as far as I know.

Martin Sheen would be a great presence to play a supporting role in the story. A lot like Michael Caine being a terrifiic star to play Alfred in the latest Batman adaptation. Caine gives Alfred more of a role model feel than just a loyal servant. Bruce has to answer to Alfred sometimes to justify his actions. In other words, Bruce can't B.S. Alfred, and Michael Caine makes you believe that. I think Martin Sheen's presence will carry the same fatherly weight in the Uncle Ben character, much like he did as Charlie Sheen's father in "Wall Street." I hope he is actually cast in the film.

My thoughts exactly. Spider-man has decades of great stories and they choose to do the **** origin again. What's the point of this reboot if they are going to make it so much like the original?

The original actor and actress (Rosemary Harris and Cliff Robertson) playing those two roles were perfect. I'm going to laugh and probably shout out a line from 'Forest Gump' during the movie if Sally Field plays Aunt May. On the other hand, I might enjoy watching Martin Sheen get shot and... oh wait, you said MARTIN Sheen. Damn... I was hoping for Charlie Sheen!  ;)

Starting over with the whole origin story again is a really bad idea.  Seriously, if there's anybody who doesn't know the basic origin story by now, the person sitting next to them in the theatre is bound to.

Hopefully, it'll just be a quick flashback.  Peter's nightmare or something.

Nice pick on the actor.  I like it.

Aunt May and Uncle Ben were created in a time when grown-ups were depicted as old folks. At least that's how I see it.

The Spider-Man comics and the Raimi devastation of a film franchise made made me feel like it was Peter Parker and his Gramma May and Grampa Ben. After all, Pete's in his teens. He's still in high school. It makes no sense to me having an aunt and uncle who look anywhere between their 60s and 70s.

I think casting actors to depict younger versions of the characters is a plus for me. Which is why I always enjoyed reading Ultimate Aunt May more than regular Aunt May (as lovely as she can be).

And I think that's something Marvel has a great advantage of. They have their Earth-616 universe with all the great stories over the years. But they also have the very successful and awesome Ultimate Universe to work with. They have the opportunity to take bits and pieces from each universe and mesh them together to make one great movie with (as well as TV series).

Only problem I have with this upcoming reboot is that it's still under Sony/Columbia. I don't know if and when and how, but I want Disney to pursue this franchise aggressively to get them under the Marvel Studios banner.

I'm ok with this, not thrilled, not offended. I'll be more than pleased if every other supporting character gets the same reaction from me.

Truthfully though, I just want to know who the other female lead is going to be. Dianna Agron ftw!
