Marmaduke: The Movie Is (Unfortunately) Coming Soon

Here's a look at the famous great dane.

Normally we lean more towards the superhero action around here.  I have heard about 20th Century Fox making a Marmaduke movie for a little while now.  Perhaps I've been in denial.  I had even heard that Owen Wilson would be providing the voice of the great dane.  Huh?  Let's back up.

Marmaduke is a long running syndicate comic strip by Brad Anderson that started in 1954.  When it was announced that a live action movie was going to be based on the strip, it wasn't really a big surprise.  Look at all the other similar properties that have made the lead to the big screen.  What strikes me as odd here is I don't recall Marmaduke actually talking (or using thought balloons) in the strip.  That's where having Owen Wilson voice the dog seems odd.  Other voice actors in the movie include Ron Perlman, Emma Stone, Jeremy Piven, William H. Macy, Damon Wayans and too many more.  The movie will deal with a family moving to a house with a big yard and their dog causes heaps of trouble.

If that doesn't make you cringe, how about a further description of the movie:

"We've approached the movie like a John Hughes movie with dogs," Dey says. "The dog park is like high school for dogs. To make this kind of movie, you really have to understand that it is the dog's world and we just live in it."

Since I stumbled across this and had to see it, I thought I'd have to share it with you guys.  The image and quote come courtesy of USA Today.  What do you think?  Have you ever read the comic?  Is the world ready for another animal movie?
