'Man of Steel' Trailer Breakdown and Analysis

What does the extended trailer tell us about the movie?

By now you should have seen the latest trailer for 'Man of Steel.' These types of trailers need to be watched over and over. Mainly because we get so excited and can't help not to. Upon watching it, what does it tell us about the movie besides the tone?

Bearded Superman in Explosion out at Sea

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Remember when we saw bearded Superman with a heavy sweater. He looked like a fisherman or something. In the opening scenes, we see him casually floating in the water with a fierce looking fire blazing above the surface.

== TEASER ==

Superman's Powers Develop When He's a Kid

No Caption Provided

In the different interpretations of Superman over the years, when he got his powers has varied. At one point, he was an infant, flying around the orphanage before Ma and Pa came back and adopted him. In other tellings, it wasn't until later in his teens he started showing his super-abilities.

In the trailer, we hear a very young Clark talking about how the world is too big. Ma can be heard telling him to focus on her voice. She tells him to make it small. We can assume that his senses are on overload.

This could also tell us why he decides to go on his bearded fishing expedition. Perhaps he just needs to get away from most people and the busy world around. Or he could be headed north to set up the Fortress of Solitude.

Struggling with a Secret Identity

No Caption Provided

In the different origins, Superman has tried to use his power for good but needs to guard his identity at the same time. When a bus goes crashing into a river, Clark has to use his powers to save lives. This tells us that he does indeed use them before becoming an adult. We also hear a voiceover of a mother of another child saying her son saw what Clark did. It'll take some fast thinking to get out of this one. Could the kid be Pete Ross who will later say he was confused or made it up in order to help keep Clark's secret?

Pa Gives Clark the Talk

We know that Clark isn't going to be whisked off to a government lab (not yet). We see Pa emphasizing the importance of keeping his abilities a secret. Clark is already a hero. He can't help but use his abilities for good. He says he couldn't just sit back and do nothing. When Clark asks if he was just supposed to "let them die," Pa responds with, "Maybe."

Fortress of Solitude and Answers from Jor-El

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Clark will have a Fortress of Solitude. We see him in a cavern/hallway carved under the snow. He's seen "talking" to someone. He says he has a lot of questions including where he comes from. We can assume he's talking to a holo-projection of Jor-El.

The crystals seen in the previous movies also appears different. This must be when he finds out everything about himself and his heritage.

Where Does the Costume Come From?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

We've seen in some origins that Ma made the costume for Clark. She's even made his cape from a baby blanket that was in his ship. Is the costume man-made or is it from Krypton?

Looks like he gets it during his time at the Fortress of Solitude. After his first scene there in the trailer, we then get our first glimpse of him in costume walking through the snow. Looks like whatever Kryptonian technology allows Clark to speak to Jor-El also provides his new wardrobe.

Could it also be that he doesn't know how to fly just yet? It's going to be a long walk home.

First Flight?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Once he has his costume, he slowly focuses and prepares to fly. It's not the smoothest take off. He leaves a mark on the ground. Will it always be like this or will he improve on his take off later?

There's always been a question of how he's actually able to fly. You can see the ground tremble around him as if he's manipulating gravity in some way. But of course we shouldn't worry about that and just enjoy how cool it looks.

The Destruction of...?

No Caption Provided

At first you think we're getting a glimpse of Krypton's last days. It's pretty intense. It appears as if a beam is shooting down. Buildings are getting destroyed and you can see some molten lava coming to the surface. But looking more carefully, you see regular vehicles. There's a bus with normal Earth numbers. I seriously doubt Krypton had regular cars with wheels. Is this Metropolis or some other city getting utterly destroyed?

Jor-El and Lara

No Caption Provided

The immediate next scene shows young Kal-El about to get his send off. This is why it'd be easy to think we just saw Krypton getting destroyed.

Where Did the Ship Land?

No Caption Provided

It always seemed odd that a spaceship could crash on Earth and no one would know.

After the scene of Krypton's destruction, we do see a ship almost casually arrive in the Kent's yard. Is this when Kal-El first arrived or could it be another Kryptonian in search of...?

Kneel Before Zod

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

You've probably heard that Michael Shannon is Zod.

Looks like there will be some kneeling involved. Superman appears to get punched in the gut or something and is spitting out as he falls to his knees. If this is early in his career, he might not be ready to face another Kryptonian.

Superman or Super-Menace?

No Caption Provided

From the recently released poster, we see Superman allowing himself to be taken into custody. We all know he could easily escape from them. It's absurd that they think a pair of handcuffs are necessary, unless they were made of Kryptonite (but that would kill him). It must be that Superman is willing to go along to prove that he is not a threat. Where he's being taken to and who he'll be talking to remains to be seen.

Death of Pa?

No Caption Provided

Sometimes his parents are alive. Sometimes one is. Currently in comics, they're both dead.

Could it be that Pa is dead? Superman is seen saying his goodbyes to Ma, as he likely is about to journey off to the real world.

Lois Lane

No Caption Provided

Some of us have been wondering if Lois was going to have dark hair or not since Amy Adams was portraying her.

This scene takes place with the Army pointing guns and tanks at him. He mentions his father saying if the world found out who he really was, they'd reject him. This is why he allows himself to be taken in. He wants to show that he is not a threat to them.

Here's the trailer one more time:

Man of Steel opens on June 14, 2013.

I think that might be something Zod related since there's two ships in that scene.

It appears to be a Superman story at the core, but a new take. I'm looking forward to seeing how this new interpretation of Supes panes out. Trailer is looking good though.

Gotta admit it might be weird seeing Zod in actual General/Army get-up. Movie looks good though. I have faith in Snyder that this will redeem the franchise

So…I’m mostly pumped for this movie now. But yet also kind of confused and disappointed.

I don’t like the tone of the music they started with, and the floating underwater scene that just seemed very so out of character, I’m afraid my greatest fears are going to be realized in a broody Superman. I do NOT like how they’re portraying the Pa Kent character already. Saying it could’ve been ok to let the kids in the bus die and telling Clark the world isn’t ready for him? No thank you. That’s not Pa. Jonathan Kent is the hope and heart that fuels Clark’s moral compass. If they could edit that out of the movie that’d be great, because that’s going to be really hard to get past. I also hope that Clark didn’t grow up to adult hood in solitude because of his powers, which is the vibe I’m getting from Beard-Clark. Superman was raised human and one of the most important parts of his character is his secret identity. It is concerning that there was no sign of him at the Daily Planet (although this is only the first trailer and we really haven't seen that much).

But as soon as we got past the depressing opening of the trailer, and Superman took off and flew around the earth I was back in! The action sequences, the alien effects, and just all the energy? That was awesome! The new Kryptonian aesthetic is cool and science fictiony, which is good because I never cared much for the Ice Planet of Krypton look. Seeing Henry Cavill in the suit is pretty boss, he is totally Superman. His brief interaction with Lois Lane was just right. I think we could have a winner here. I know I spent more time on the complaints, but it’s hard to verbalize just how exciting it is to see Superman fly.

I am definitely more excited after seeing the trailer but I’m definitely still equally as nervous. So the only thing that’s changed is I’m more pumped for this summer.

I thought that the music was a strange choice. The actual scenes look fantastic, just didn't like the overall tone.

I know I'll still be at the midnight showing.

Please, just don't do the whole 'Ghostbusters' story.

Superman: "I'm different, I got powers"

Citizens: "Ah he is a freak, with crazy powers"

Cops: "Arrest him! He is dangerous to this world! He can destroy us!"

-Superman arrested. Everyone happy, hates Superman. then Zod attacks.-

Citizens: "Help we need our hero!"

Asshole guy: "Don't release him! He will join Zod and destroy us all!"

-Guy in charge makes tough decision, releases Superman, tells asshole guy to f*ck off. Superman saves the day, becomes a hero that everyone loves-

Just like Ghostbusters.

I think it's important to remember in a lot of trailers, dialogue is edited to be out of context or out of order. It's entirely possible Pa Kent's 'Maybe.' is from a different portion of that conversation.

Well DC super hero movies all seem to be going for a realistic (not dark n gritty) setting and in real life if there was a walking talking human equivalent of a WMD then he would be taken in to custody

Great rundown. Judging by the trailer, Zack Snyder has done a spectacular job making a movie full of unreal action and heart. This is the movie I'm most looking forward to seeing in the near future.

P.S. And I'm thanking God that the Tim Burton/Nic Cage Giant Spider version did not see the light of day.

Exactly, for all we know that dialogue might have been "maybe, or maybe not, it's your actions that will define who you are Clark" and everything would be hunky dory

I agree with you on that, we all now how trailers cut up the conversations and dialogue in film and make it seem like what it is not.

I love the trailer and Henry Cavill RULES!!!! as Clark/Superman. And if anyone thinks the trailer did not reveal anything they may be wrong as you know the producer and overseer is Chris Nolan.

YAY Superman!

@Jonny_Anonymous: or maybe he loves his son, and doesn't want him taken away, and he doesn't know how to deal with the kind of power he has, so he is unsure of what he says, and there are emotions are stuff... you know something different for a change honestly i've already seen too many people bashing that line in the movie, and me I think it's intense, some people need to grow up.

@Mbecks14: I I don't think we should be throwing stones at this aspect of the film quite yet. Its not a different interpretation from past material. In Superman: The Movie Jonathan admonished Clark for using his abilities to get back at Brad. In Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Jonathan yelled at him for saving the man in the sewer because he could have been exposed (Martha even yells back at Jonathan by saying something like "well what did you want him to do Jonathan, just let the man die" to which Jonathan simply shrugs and the conversation continues). In the Smallville series Jonathan physically attacks or chases down a few people that learn Clark's identity in order to keep him safe. So this aspect of wanting to protect Clark and doing so by making him hide his abilities has only been deviated from in two origins (Silver Age Superboy and Superman: Secret Origin......and even in Secret Origin he was told to always move at superspeed even though he was wearing his outfit). So really this is an aspect of Jonathan's character that has existed since his creation.

Please tell me anyone else spotted Christopher Meloni at the 2:02 mark? He played Detective Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: SVU from 1999 to 2010. And the footage is great and the breakdown here is excellent! The most electrifying part of the trailer though is when he first launches himself into flight..that just gave me utter goosebumps!

It has elements of the 1938 illegal vigilante Superman which was close to Philip Wylie's Gladiator. It also has elements of the John Byrne Superman which was the basis of the Smallville tv show. I agree with the use of alien villains since if Superman is portrayed like a god in the movie, even Luthor in Iron Man armor is no match for Superman. With the Kryptonian science of Superman, even the earth science of Lex is no match for Superman. In the Thor movies, Thor fights mainly norse characters and very little sign of earthlings.

Wow.....so nobody has said anything about Zod yet (well, aside from wardroom). No Phantom Zone. Looks to be blowing up major cities and possibly invading the Earth. A very interesting choice for an origin reboot. Definitely more interested in Zod and Faora now than I was before. So many questions to answer, like why they might not have been on Krypton when it was destroyed? was Zod the cause of the destruction? are he and Faora the only Kryptonians on the ship? do they get powers immediately and if so why use technology to strike at the cities? or do they only get enhanced abilities at first and through the film gain greater strength as they spend more time in a yellow sun? Very, very cool development on these two characters as a result of this trailer.

Now fingers crossed that future trailers don't spoil everything before the May release. As much as I want to know the new interpretations for Zod and Faora, I want to find out in the theater rather than a trailer or featurette. This could be the big shock/twist of the movie so hopefully Synder won't ruin it with an unnecessary trailer reveal.

Superman suit is looking better and better and we get more images and real movement in it. I'm still a bit torn over the removal of a true belt (and for clarification I mean a gold belt not the stupid red one in the new 52) but the color tone is great.

I doubt MoS will get better reviews or make the box office that the Avengers did. MoS got IM3 and Thor 2 to compete with next year, and we both know that those two movies will be box office hits.

I hope Zod will be talking kryptonian rather than english. It is always funny when aliens are able to learn english instantly. For a future Superman movie, I would like to see a fight with Orion so that the New Gods can also get their own movie like Thor.

@ltbrd: True. But I guess I never liked those interpretations. I don't like Smallville Jonathan Kent at all personally. I prefer the humble farmer from stories like Secret Origin and All Star Superman. I know it's very early to judge but that part of the trailer really made my brow raise. I like that Jonathan is protective of Clark's secrets, that's good but I don't think he should be okay with letting people die. But like you said, hard to judge based on just one trailer

That tone of voice Cavill got at the end of the trailer when he's speaking as Kal-El, knowing he's not just Clark Kent anymore... It gave me chills. I don't know why. Maybe it reminded me of the way Christopher Reeves sounded, just a little bit. No matter how silly parts of the old movies were, Reeves still looked and sounded like Superman. That preview of Cavill's voice acting, out of all the awesome footage in the trailer and the insight into the overall feel, sold it for me more than anything. I'm still excited for Zod, still excited to see Clark's struggles growing up, but I guess that if the guy in costume is perfect fit, everything else will follow suit.

Liked it, didn't love it.

Few concerns:

#1

Clark's dad, Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner's) line about maybe letting the kids die, that didn't sit very well. Too overly dramatic.

#2

The last line about being rejected by the world, can you say X-Men? They're going with the whole "people are afraid of you."

#3

Superman de-humanization by being taken into custody, etc. feels like the studio will be force feeding us the audience of the relatability of Superman, kind of like "hey guys, we know Superman is so powerful and all but look, he has feelings too." It's fine, but I just hope they don't keep shoving it in our faces throughout the film.

Loved the trailer and this breakdown was also done very well. Still worried about the whole letting himself be taken around by humans because they are afraid. Humans are the last species to judge an alien to see if they are dangerous. lol

Super person not being accepted by society is as old as Philip Wylie's Gladiator which was the inspiration for the illegal vigilante Superman of 1938. Super persons not being accepted by society was also later popularized by the x-men and has also influenced the New 52 rebooted earth that is more suspicious of super vigilantes. If people crucified Jesus, I would assume they will also crucify super heroes. In the real world, vigilantes are considered a little bit crazy and dangerous and need to be jailed so that we can all be safe.

This actually looks good.

I think there will be some 'New 52' influence, and that's a good thing. I've always hated Superman with a passion until recentyl that he's gotten a bit of good writing on his side.

it looks like they're doing their own thing here. the space ships the Pa Kent stuff. It's like a new 52 in film version. ROCK ON!
