'Man of Steel' Trailer Breakdown and Analysis

What does the extended trailer tell us about the movie?

By now you should have seen the latest trailer for 'Man of Steel.' These types of trailers need to be watched over and over. Mainly because we get so excited and can't help not to. Upon watching it, what does it tell us about the movie besides the tone?

Bearded Superman in Explosion out at Sea

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Remember when we saw bearded Superman with a heavy sweater. He looked like a fisherman or something. In the opening scenes, we see him casually floating in the water with a fierce looking fire blazing above the surface.

== TEASER ==

Superman's Powers Develop When He's a Kid

No Caption Provided

In the different interpretations of Superman over the years, when he got his powers has varied. At one point, he was an infant, flying around the orphanage before Ma and Pa came back and adopted him. In other tellings, it wasn't until later in his teens he started showing his super-abilities.

In the trailer, we hear a very young Clark talking about how the world is too big. Ma can be heard telling him to focus on her voice. She tells him to make it small. We can assume that his senses are on overload.

This could also tell us why he decides to go on his bearded fishing expedition. Perhaps he just needs to get away from most people and the busy world around. Or he could be headed north to set up the Fortress of Solitude.

Struggling with a Secret Identity

No Caption Provided

In the different origins, Superman has tried to use his power for good but needs to guard his identity at the same time. When a bus goes crashing into a river, Clark has to use his powers to save lives. This tells us that he does indeed use them before becoming an adult. We also hear a voiceover of a mother of another child saying her son saw what Clark did. It'll take some fast thinking to get out of this one. Could the kid be Pete Ross who will later say he was confused or made it up in order to help keep Clark's secret?

Pa Gives Clark the Talk

We know that Clark isn't going to be whisked off to a government lab (not yet). We see Pa emphasizing the importance of keeping his abilities a secret. Clark is already a hero. He can't help but use his abilities for good. He says he couldn't just sit back and do nothing. When Clark asks if he was just supposed to "let them die," Pa responds with, "Maybe."

Fortress of Solitude and Answers from Jor-El

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Clark will have a Fortress of Solitude. We see him in a cavern/hallway carved under the snow. He's seen "talking" to someone. He says he has a lot of questions including where he comes from. We can assume he's talking to a holo-projection of Jor-El.

The crystals seen in the previous movies also appears different. This must be when he finds out everything about himself and his heritage.

Where Does the Costume Come From?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

We've seen in some origins that Ma made the costume for Clark. She's even made his cape from a baby blanket that was in his ship. Is the costume man-made or is it from Krypton?

Looks like he gets it during his time at the Fortress of Solitude. After his first scene there in the trailer, we then get our first glimpse of him in costume walking through the snow. Looks like whatever Kryptonian technology allows Clark to speak to Jor-El also provides his new wardrobe.

Could it also be that he doesn't know how to fly just yet? It's going to be a long walk home.

First Flight?

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Once he has his costume, he slowly focuses and prepares to fly. It's not the smoothest take off. He leaves a mark on the ground. Will it always be like this or will he improve on his take off later?

There's always been a question of how he's actually able to fly. You can see the ground tremble around him as if he's manipulating gravity in some way. But of course we shouldn't worry about that and just enjoy how cool it looks.

The Destruction of...?

No Caption Provided

At first you think we're getting a glimpse of Krypton's last days. It's pretty intense. It appears as if a beam is shooting down. Buildings are getting destroyed and you can see some molten lava coming to the surface. But looking more carefully, you see regular vehicles. There's a bus with normal Earth numbers. I seriously doubt Krypton had regular cars with wheels. Is this Metropolis or some other city getting utterly destroyed?

Jor-El and Lara

No Caption Provided

The immediate next scene shows young Kal-El about to get his send off. This is why it'd be easy to think we just saw Krypton getting destroyed.

Where Did the Ship Land?

No Caption Provided

It always seemed odd that a spaceship could crash on Earth and no one would know.

After the scene of Krypton's destruction, we do see a ship almost casually arrive in the Kent's yard. Is this when Kal-El first arrived or could it be another Kryptonian in search of...?

Kneel Before Zod

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

You've probably heard that Michael Shannon is Zod.

Looks like there will be some kneeling involved. Superman appears to get punched in the gut or something and is spitting out as he falls to his knees. If this is early in his career, he might not be ready to face another Kryptonian.

Superman or Super-Menace?

No Caption Provided

From the recently released poster, we see Superman allowing himself to be taken into custody. We all know he could easily escape from them. It's absurd that they think a pair of handcuffs are necessary, unless they were made of Kryptonite (but that would kill him). It must be that Superman is willing to go along to prove that he is not a threat. Where he's being taken to and who he'll be talking to remains to be seen.

Death of Pa?

No Caption Provided

Sometimes his parents are alive. Sometimes one is. Currently in comics, they're both dead.

Could it be that Pa is dead? Superman is seen saying his goodbyes to Ma, as he likely is about to journey off to the real world.

Lois Lane

No Caption Provided

Some of us have been wondering if Lois was going to have dark hair or not since Amy Adams was portraying her.

This scene takes place with the Army pointing guns and tanks at him. He mentions his father saying if the world found out who he really was, they'd reject him. This is why he allows himself to be taken in. He wants to show that he is not a threat to them.

Here's the trailer one more time:

Man of Steel opens on June 14, 2013.

I already have a complaint at this dialogue

Clark Kent: what was I suppose to do? Let them Die?

Jonathan Kent: Maybe

WTF!!

Is his parents not the influence of his "human" side?

however wouldnt that be contradicting his point in not letting him use his powers to save the bus.

scene probably goes like this with his point

Pa Kent: you should NEVER use ur powers they can find out

Clark: what was I.... let them die?

Pa Kent: maybe, but that not how we raised you. good job son

I want a good superman movie like the next guy... I just can seem to find a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope im wrong. The last line in the trailer feels like its for "us". Can we accept another Superman movie? Keep in mind... this is the 6th one.

Please, just don't do the whole 'Ghostbusters' story.

Superman: "I'm different, I got powers"

Citizens: "Ah he is a freak, with crazy powers"

Cops: "Arrest him! He is dangerous to this world! He can destroy us!"

-Superman arrested. Everyone happy, hates Superman. then Zod attacks.-

Citizens: "Help we need our hero!"

Asshole guy: "Don't release him! He will join Zod and destroy us all!"

-Guy in charge makes tough decision, releases Superman, tells asshole guy to f*ck off. Superman saves the day, becomes a hero that everyone loves-

Just like Ghostbusters.

That's also the story of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer when you think about it :P

Do you know what I also hate, comic fans who don't like a movie because it is not 100% comic-book accurate.Yet when thor and the asgardians are made into aliens, everyone just skips along....

No movie will ever be 100% comic accurate, not even watchmen (which was awesome)

I think it's important to remember in a lot of trailers, dialogue is edited to be out of context or out of order. It's entirely possible Pa Kent's 'Maybe.' is from a different portion of that conversation.

Exactly, for all we know that dialogue might have been "maybe, or maybe not, it's your actions that will define who you are Clark" and everything would be hunky dory

THANK YOU!

Let's compare two famous comic father figures for a second, shall we?

Ben Parker: "With great power comes great responsibility."

Jonathan Kent: "You should've let that bus full of kids drown, son. No one can ever know about you."

Maybe Jonathan Kent is following Jor-El's master plan which requires some lives to be sacrificed while Clark is still young ? Maybe Jonathan Kent has his own master plan for Clark which requires some lives to be sacrificed while Clark is still young. If Clark really wants to save as many lives as possible, this would mean that Clark will have no time to sleep, no time to eat, no time to have sex, no time to study, no time to watch tv, etc. otherwise, some person is going to die and not be saved while Clark is doing his own activities. Maybe Jonathan is still confused and just does not know yet what Clark should do and should not do. It is more realistic to assume that both Jonathan and Clark will take time to figure out the best use of Clark's powers. Some humans take as many as 50 years before finally figuring out what to do.

I get why people would be upset with a line of dialog, except for that fact that it really isn't out of character for Jonathan to say something like this if you look back at the full 80 years of Superman continuity and the multiple interpretations of his character. Once again readers are superimposing what they think a character is and how a character acts over what creators across multiple media forms have already put down. Too many blinders on one aspect of the man rather than the whole picture.

Its also important to point out Jonathan's body language in the scene......you know, since this is a movie and we can actually look at body language vice a static picture on a piece of paper. Its obvious in that scene that Jonathan is very uncomfortable with what he's saying. He's struggling to give his son the advice he needs because he's been put in a situation nobody has ever been in before. That's the true genius of the Jonathan and Martha Kent characters. Its not about the values they instill in Clark. Its the fact that they were able to raise him. Look at our society today and all the crap reality and psychology shows that get thrown into our faces and how screwed up many parents and child relationships are. Now take those same children and give them Kryptonian abilities. Yeah, the apocolypse would have occured by now. Parents simply wouldn't know how to deal with that type of kid, many struggle to be parents even with a single normal child. So the true power of these two characters is the fact that they could actually raise Clark when all convention would say it would be impossible to do so (an aspect of their characters the Smallville series explored very well I thought).

So looking at the whole scene we see a Jonathan Kent that's not sure what to do. He's not sure what the right answer is or what is the best thing to say to Clark do make things turn out okay. He might say "Maybe" but he certainly doesn't believe it and that's evident by the fact he turns away from his son, ashamed not only of his comment but the fact that he couldn't say anything better. He's not prepared to deal with Clark's growing powers at first and even if he learns to deal with them and to say the right things why should he think a random stranger would do any better, someone that doesn't even know Clark and doesn't love him the way he and Martha do.

I applaude Synder for this approach to Jonathan Kent. Especially because he's most likely not going to live through the entire film. So because he'll be on screen for such a brief period of time, Snyder needs the audience to have an immediate connection to him, his thoughts, and his feelings as both a human and a father. I think Costner is going to knock that out of the park with his portrayal and that brief scene shows us why. Just by what you see in those brief seconds you feel sympathy for the man and also a bit amazed that despite such difficulties and uncertainties Clark turns out very well under his tutelage and parenting (yes, Martha is in there, but as Jonathan has the line I'm focusing only on him for this comment). This allows him to have a lasting impact on the audience even though he'll not be in scene after scene.

As for the flight scene, not getting into the debate of how the Man of Steel actually flies (though I'm in the camp of the manipulation of his bio-electric aura producing an electro-magnetic effect around his body) to me that scene is conveying a sense of freedom for Clark that he's never had before. It might be his first flight, but it also represents a letting go of his doubts and a move towards a new future. His questions have been answered. He's free of doubts about himself and his abilities. He's finally able to accept the totality of who he is because he now knows the complete answer of who he is. So its a very symbolic representation of pushing forward into a new future.

Now, as for the mechanics, definitely a Smallville vibe (though Superman Returns used the same style of heat vision as Smallville so its not the first time for cross media power displays) but where I think Man of Steel is going to get it right is in not over-emphasizing the disturbance effect of Kryptonian flight. Smallville just took the idea too far by having the stupid disturbance rings and wind tunnel tails around Clark everytime he was able to fly. They did it for Zod as well in one episode and yet at the same time never showed it on Kara or the Kandorians. It was a stupid, overly dramatic effect. I think MoS is getting it right but showing that when Clark really cranks up his flight power there is a disturbance around him, but its not going to be something visually apparent all the time or require him to squat before flying or anything like that. This scene will be there as a symbol of his full powers being utilized to their potential but I think the rest of the film we'll see flying more in-line with what we've come to expect from other live action portrayals.

I am ok with the flight starting out with a jump. Since Superman does have energy powers such as heat vision, I just assume Superman flies via his energy powers similar to Ray.

@ltbrd: Agreed, and that "maybe",since this was a trailer and this happens in almost every trailer of a movie, but the dialogue is out of context.

People are just too overprotective and stupid sometimes, they want the most unrealistic movie and character that makes superman unlikable by most...

I actually like what John Kent said. It stays true-ish to his portrayal in Birthright. Ma was all for Superman being a big hero, but Pa was very against the idea, even beating his frustrations on Kal-El's ship with a sledgehammer.

Brainiac should be ok in a 2nd movie. I enjoyed Brainiac in the Smallville tv series. Doomsday could be ok in a 3rd movie or Brainiac can work with Doomsday in a 2nd movie. For a 3rd movie can also consider Mongul or Imperiex.

Is it me, or does MOS have alot, and I mean, alot, of water scenes? Everytime I see one of these trailers theres a split second where I'm thinking, "Damn, they're making an Aquaman movie?"

I like the breakdown though, not sure how I feel about Michael Shannon as Zod. He's less then imposing on Boardwalk Empire.

Man of Steel will be just like The Dark Knight, exceptionally well made, beautiful, awe inspiring for generations to come but the character of Superman will be twisted to Zach and Nolans personal preferences, not the fans. Just like Batman, his Superman rendition will be highly emotional and unlike anything read in past comics. But, the movie will be immensely well made. Just my two cents. The Suit design is crap. Pure and utter crap, that scaled look is dreadful and shows how much Nolan and Synder care about what fans think. ( They do not care at all ). Anything synonymous with the character of Superman you have come to accept in your entire life will be thrown out the window. From the odd FAT S design that invokes laziness and fatness, so the quire boy music that was so bad in Superman Returns ( Nolan and Zach learned nothing from Singers failures and repeated his mistakes ) to the poor outfit, you will get an award worthy movie all around but all Nostalgia will be absent.

I cannot imagine a Superman remake without at least a few cues from the Williams score and Superman should never wear chain male armor, or scales. It is very stupid. I'll never be happy with that. Lets hope the movie is so well made and great that we forget about it during the movie and only afterwards can gripe about the terrible choice in suit design and missing Superman Theme.

Love, love, LOVE this trailer! There's just one word to describe it. MAJESTIC!!

WB, this is what you should focus on. Put the brakes on a JL film. Give Zack Snyder and David Goyer a chance to make an amazing Superman trilogy the way that Nolan gave us an incredible Batman trilogy. Get a Wonder Woman and Flash film off the ground, reboot Batman, then make a JL film with all the combined characters. Heck, even wait for a MOS 2 film to be made before doing JL. But let Snyder make the films he wants to make so that Superman becomes as popular as Batman amongst mainstream audiences!!

The way it's looking, Man Of Steel>>>>Avengers

I doubt MoS will get better reviews or make the box office that the Avengers did. MoS got IM3 and Thor 2 to compete with next year, and we both know that those two movies will be box office hits.

Box office sales mean nothing except bragging rights and allows for more movies spawning from the financial success of previous films, besides Avengers hasn't beaten LOTR trilogy totals or Avatar still has Avengers beat in overall worldwide sales. Besides, outside of Avengers movie records. DC still overall has the upper hand with Smallville longest running 10 year comic book TV show>>anything Marvel has done and most sold comic of all time. Death of Superman. Not to mention animated movies and shows which DC also has done better then Marvel.

The main reason why Avengers sold crazy was because it was aimed at kids besides anyone else, DK is more mature, DC movies in general usually attract a more essentric, mature mind. Otherwise, honestly most overrated comic movie ever. 90% of the movie was CGI.

I'm sure MOS will get just as good if not better reviews then Avengers and DKR(not that reviews mean much) all that is are people getting paid for their opinions, but the overall scale I'm sure MOS will be FAR better then Superman Returns from the trailer alone and I can already tell better then the 3rd and 4th Superman movies.

I'm sold. This looks awesome.

I don't read Superman, never have read a single issue. Or any Superfamily titles. But I'm gonna see this. I get the feelin i'm going to be reading Super titles this time next year.

Really hundreds of comments and no one mentions the brief glimpse we get of Laurence Fishburne as Perry White running with Lois Lane through a bunch of exploding buildings!?

At least I think that was Perry and Lois lol. @1:53 I think.

I saw that and I heard some theories that suggest that that's the real Lois Lane and Amy Adams is actually playing Lana Lang. This is obviously based on previous stuff we've seen with Nolan's characters, but the theory doesn't make sense for a lot of reasons:

  1. Why would Lana be more important than Lois?
  2. Liam Neeson as Henry Ducard/Ra's al Ghul, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul and Joseph Gordon Levitt as John Blake/Robin John Blake. All these characters had "secret identities", but they did use their "fake ones" in the movie. Why would Lana use the name of another character in the movie?
